Truth be told, there was a part of Sebastian that wanted to do it all by himself. He wanted to show that he could do it and there was just something so nice about succeeding on your own terms. And he knew he could. He had done it before. He could do it again. He should be able to do it again. He should.

“I-I want to do it…” And yet, his hands nervously bended the baton in his hands and the thing threatened to finally break (even though it never did). “I can do it… I can… I should… Uuugh… but what if I won’t? What if I’m wrong?” What if he forgets a word again, what if the defense attorney is mean, what if the judge is impatient? Oh no, he was about to cry.

“Again, that is up to you. Some lawyers do have a co-council for most of their career.”

Not Miles, but he did often have someone overseeing and looking over his trials. It was only after Manfred was put behind bars that he never had any sort of supervision that wasn’t conducted by the police who aided in creating the case.

He reached over and gently placed a hand on Sebastian’s shoulder. “The prosecution isn’t always correct. I wasn’t. I’ve ‘lost’ a few cases. Ultimately... We are deliverers of truth. Two sides of the same coin with the defense, in fact... We are simply starting from the supposition that the one we’ve arrested is guilty. If you believe that the defendant is innocent and you have made your case to the best of your abilities, there’s also no harm in saying, ‘The prosecution rests.’ The truth is more important than a perfect record, and we don’t want innocent people behind bars. Fight for the truth, and that only.”

Granted, the only time that Miles used that phrase was the time that pushing his case would mean Maya’s life was in danger, but Sebastian didn’t have to know that.

“I support whatever decision you make here, Sebastian. I can see the benefits of having a co-council, but I can also see benefits in handling this trial independently. If it helps, should you choose not to have me as your co-council, I can still attend via the gallery.” He glanced away in a little embarrassment at the sentiment as he added, “I... have personal interest in your career, so I’d like to see how you do either way.”

“C-can you?” Sebastian’s question was full of hope as he clinged to Mr. Edgeworth’s sleeve.

He was getting progressively more anxious, the closer came the time for his trial. It would be the first trial he had been working on all by himself. He thought he was ready. The case wasn’t even that messy or hard and Sebastian put in a lot of effort into it. This wouldn’t be hard. This wasn’t even his first case ever. And yet...

“O-oh, wait, but then what would be the point... I-I can do it by myself.”

Why was he so anxious?

Sebastian’s jitters didn’t surprise him. He was at the helm of one case, but that had been a bit impromptu and obviously a harrowing, perhaps debatably traumatizing experience for him. If Miles hadn’t been there...

“Having a co-council is not shameful. The defense often does,” he said lightly. If Sebastian needed more support, that wasn’t an issue for him, especially since he didn’t have any case to focus on at the moment. And if it aided in Sebastian’s confidence, Miles would willingly help in any way that Sebastian chose for him to. “It’s up to you how you’d like to approach it. I know you can lead the case if needed, you did as much before... But if having me there helps to keep you on track, I don’t mind it.”

Miles would never amount what happened in that first trial against Blaise as being the result of anything Miles himself did. Sebastian said most of it at the time. He didn’t doubt that Sebastian could handle it. But he would rather permit Sebastian the proper ability to have a good trial rather than throwing him out to the wolves if he didn’t feel ready for it.

As soon as Sebastian felt the tap and glanced in Mr. Edgeworth’s direction he wrapped his arms around the older man and hid his face into the other’s chest. He was bawling his eyes out, not really caring about staining Mr. Edgeworth’s suit.

It was so nice. To be acknowledged, validated for something he had actually done by the person he wanted to acknowledge him the most. To be offered comfort.

Sebastian cried a lot, but he never really got any comfort. Though, he never really cried for it. He didn’t really know he needed it. He didn’t know he needed all this validation and acknowledgement. But now that he got both, he realised just how much he needed it and much he lacked it.

“Th-thank you…” He tried to say again. “I-I-I-” He sniffled and turned his head, so he wouldn’t be muffled. “Thanks… I-I think I n-needed th-this…”

Luckily, he didn’t seem too hesitant. Enough, in fact, that Miles let out a small noise of surprise by how quickly Sebastian took to wrapping his arms back around him; but Miles didn’t hesitate after that, either, bringing his arms back around the younger man’s back and holding him steady as he sobbed into his chest. Better than blowing his nose on his jabot (looking at you, Kay).

He gently pat Sebastian on the back as he cried it out, humming an affirmative at the repetition of his gratitude... Along with him admitting that he needed it. “It is no problem, Sebastian.” Even if he was... Unused to physical contact, the boy’s body within his arms feeling strange as a result, it was far from bad. A bit awkward, not quite sure where to place his hands, but he could handle some embarrassment in favor of allowing the boy to be himself.

“Blaise won’t touch every aspect of your life anymore,” he continued softly, wrapping back around to what inspired this conversation in the first place. “You’ll gain more friends. People will change their opinions of you, so long as you work hard. Even if they don’t, you will, at the end of it, live in the knowledge that you are pursuing your own path, and there is little that is more valuable than that.” And ultimately, Miles believed in him. Maybe he couldn’t change what happened to Sebastian in the past, but he could help pave a brighter future for him -- a path that Miles knew best pursued Sebastian’s own personhood, separate from Blaise.

Sebastian watched and listened to Mr. Edgeworth with wide, teary eyes. It just… felt weird to be validated for something he had actually put an effort into. It felt so much different from all the awards and praises Blaise bought for him, despite the fact that he hadn’t known it then. He was putting in effort then, too, of course, but nothing that would be enough for Blaise. But now everything he did, even the things that weren’t visible, they were acknowledged.

“Uuuuugh…” Tears streamed down his cheeks as he curled in on himself more, one hand clenching the baton in his hand and the other fruitlessly trying to wipe the tears away. “Th-thank you…” He tried to say through his tears, but there was just too much to take in. It wasn’t even bad. It was nice. It was just too much. “Uuuuuuuuugh…”

Obviously, what Miles said was overwhelming for Sebastian -- and it didn’t take much thinking to figure out why. Despite the accolades that Sebastian would receive, the falsified and bought-out grades, he likely never received genuine praise at this level. A couple stars didn’t compensate for the loving words of a friend who saw through to the effort, cut to the bone of the accomplishments.

‘My idiot son,’ Blaise would say. ‘I worry so much about him.’ He didn’t even realize that Sebastian tried to protect him. He saw him as incompetent, and of course he did when it’d been his intention to make him that way. But it was sugar-coated to sound like love, to Sebastian, because he never knew what that sounded like. Miles experienced the opposite, but what felt similar: high expectations. Sebastian barely amounted to anything. Miles amounted to too much.

In hindsight, Blaise’s machinations came off as more insidious to Miles. At least in his case, he recognized that Manfred von Karma cared far more for a record than he ever would him. The coldness became unmistakeable. But Blaise coated his putdowns in affection, in ‘this is for your own good’s, in ‘you wouldn’t be this without me’s. Miles had to be something. Sebastian was something because Blaise made him that way.

No wonder it was so hard for Sebastian. Especially since Miles found it easy to say he never really loved von Karma. Sebastian... His love for Blaise was so potent, obvious. His love for the people he thought loved him back, like Judge Courtney, who used him for her own gain; like the students at school, who were just as oblivious to what Sebastian really was as he was; the teachers, whose own praise was bought. Sebastian was never taught to stifle his feelings for efficiency, like Miles was, but that almost made it worse on him. He exposed that vulnerability all the time, without realizing that everyone took advantage of it.

He must feel...

Violated. That’s the word Miles was looking for.

It’s because of that, that when he approached Sebastian, he remained slow. That vulnerability stood stark and loud in front of him, and Miles... wanted to answer it, in a way people normally didn’t for him. But he wanted Sebastian to make the choice to receive that answer.

He gently tapped Sebastian’s arm. And, exposing his own vulnerability, awkwardly extended his arms to the sides. It’s an invitation, one that Sebastian could reject. One that’s embarrassing for someone as closed off as Miles to make. A...hug. If Sebastian wanted it.

As a result of growing up with Blaise as a father, Sebastian has picked up on some of his mannerisms. Besides the simple one of “y’know” and “y’see”, a lot of his insults come from things that he’s heard Blaise say about people before. On top of that, Sebastian has a tendency to threaten people on occasion when he can’t get his way. He never actually follows through on any of those threats (far too softhearted) and he backs down from them immediately upon being challenged.

The question “Are you raising your voice at me?” is sure to get Sebastian to cower immediately.
