the little voice in my head  tells me how to do things how to do things well how to manage my hectic schedule be prepared with notes and well thought-out opinions how to build an effective argument  be prepared  with logical and emotional examples

sometimes

if I am not careful and if I make a mistake the little voice lights me on fire as I burn it screams why didn’t you prepare?! aren’t you grateful?!  don’t you care?! the beautiful tower of cards you have built will be blown like chaff here’s the guilt

with time with jesus grace became easier to extend I saw how inadequate others felt  with my criticism I saw how insecure others felt  with my unrealistic expectations I know how to argue with the little voice to protect those I love

but

the little voice makes good points about my own life where is the line between hard work and perfection? love and idolatry? integrity and self-righteousness?  I get confused

sometimes... I cry sometimes... I laugh

because there’s a freakin’ little voice in my head and that’s weird

because the little voice has an impressive resume  valedictorian full ride to college

because the little voice shows me the absurdity of life mullets = mistake bathroom selfies = mistake

because laughing at the incorrect pours water to sooth the fire inside

so

is this how I end this stupid poem? the little voice tells me  I should change a few things

but

I remind it that we have other items  to tackle on our to do list
