Ch1 reference "he smiles when he's MAD"

He's still smiling, but turning into defense mode(attack and challenging is best defensive mechanism)

Still smiling, but d making him see the truth without actually telling it....truth is bitter hence the bitter smile and d is mean for that in Yashiro's pov

Getting back to the original upset/mad smile......bcz d is more defensive than him, and not allowing him to get answers he was expecting....and now it's only about yashiro and his impo issue

Finally a smile but filled with hurt.... The smile were all masks tumbled down...his injured heart is crystal clear on his face....&it's like he's no more understand himself too....from completely denying to almost want d to understand the storm inside his heart with this short tricky/desperate reply

The different interpretations of this chapter and some dialogues are really interesting, but we must not forget that the lei motive of saezuru is contradictions and this chapter for me is that. Yashiro and Doumeki subtly communicate in this way on the one hand Yashiro wants to continue pretending that he doesn't care but he reproaches Doumeki for everything and on the other hand Doumeki talks about just sex or rough sex but the entire chapter treats Yashiro with so much passion and longing. They both already know each other and have begun to read each other quite well for me, finally they are both on the same page in their own way.

Fact: all the vignettes have a white background, which means that they are both happy with what they are experiencing except in the vignettes when Doumeki says that it is just sex because Doumeki is lying to Yashiro hahaha, it's not going to be that easy for him.

I wanted to make a post about these words from Yashiro at the end of ch 56 because I feel like this Mona Lisa smile of his has caused quite a few differing opinions (which is great and so fun to read about).

Here's what the Japanese version says:

Y: いいなそれ (That's nice)

Fans interpretations of this expression in response to Doumeki saying "I just want to have sex, there's nothing more to it than that" have run the gamut from sadness and dejection to understanding to warm happiness. I can see all of those things in there, certainly, but I think of this expression as being one of understanding, relief, and a little jealousy.

いいな "iina" - is a casual phrase in Japanese that's often used to express that you like something or that something is good in a way that makes you want it for yourself. For example, maybe a sibling gets a really good birthday present or a friend gets tickets to a concert that you wanted to attend but can't - in those situations you might use this expression to lightly suggest that you're kind of jealous of their good fortune.

I think Y might be suggesting that D's straightforward way of thinking about sex is enviable. I saw this line as a sign of Y acknowledging his complicated relationship with sex and expressing that, although he projects the image that sex is nothing to him, sex is anything but meaningless for him.

Yashiro has used sex as an escape from the trauma caused by his step father and a mechanism to self-harm in an attempt to feel something (I talked a lot about this and how Y uses sex as a method to fulfill his own self image in this older post if anyone is interested). Sex is incredibly heavy and loaded for Y so having sex that means nothing, just sex for the sake of sex, must sound so freeing to Y.

The connotation of jealousy in いいな is mostly dependent on the inflection the speaker uses, so I'm really looking forward to hearing this line on the drama cd. ^^
