The man you see scuba diving, racing stock cars, flying fighter jets, and going to EVERY PIN ON THAT MAP is my Dad who “allegedly” is "not” James Bond. . No matter where his adventurous side has lead him, he's always been a pilot first and foremost. . “I started in maintenance with the military, but they figured I was better breaking planes than fixing them so they let me be a pilot.” . Coming from a blue-collar family, he did whatever he could to afford the very expensive training required to get a pilots license. . “I lived in a tent on the beach one summer while I worked at a restaurant so I could save up for flying lessons.” . Even after all those years he never got tired of it. . “Oh I’d fly the planes for free; they really just paid me for having to hang out in airports in between.” . I asked him what kind of insider info he had for travelers in light of all his experience, to which he replied: . 1. “Don’t fly out of Newark if you can help it. It’s just better for everyone if you don’t. JFK is designed to handle high volume better, and bigger airplanes for international connections.” . 2. “Don’t get too intimidated by the 3 digit airport codes. Chicago used to be an orchard which is why it’s ORD. Orlando is MCO because it used to be McCoy Air Force base (back when they had to get B-52s with heavy payloads up in the air, which is why it has a huge runway.)” . 3. "And don’t marry anyone until you see how they handle lost luggage.” . One person you’ll definitely hear about in my latest piece is this lady. . My mom had natural athletic ability growing up as a tomboy on three acres in Ohio riding horses and climbing fences. You can hear how much she wishes she had had an opportunity to harness it when she wistfully explains “Title Nine happened the year I graduated high school. I was so close.” . That sure as hell didn’t stop her. She has been a ‘4x a week lifting weights at the gym’ person for as long as I can remember, and always searching out live music venues where she can dance. (And can we talk about the fact she is over 40 in this picture?!?! #witchcraft.) . When she was 18 she moved out to California by herself, and lived off Wilshire Blvd, until her management job for Avis car rentals moved her to Florida. One thing I didn’t appreciate until later in life is that she was never shy about using new technology- never scared to learn something new or keep up with the times. Just the other day when I was visiting (while double fisting an iPad and an iPhone at the same time) she looks up and informs me “This Pandora station we’re streaming is my favorite; it’s called Hipster Cocktail Party.” . Then she told me her follower count. . Then, when we were in front of a cashier who was declining her $20 bill because the store was trying to be “tech-based” she legit responded “So you don’t take cash? Okay, do you take bitcoin?” . She’s been a constant role model for independence, health, and not being scared of tackling things that are stereotypically ear-marked for men. . (Oh, and in her free time now she volunteers as a court-appointed representative for children helping to make recommendations to the judge(s) regarding what is best for the child’s safety and well being. You know, #nbd.) .
