Top Ten Tuesday: CFWH (570 AM, Whitehorse, YT), 11/27/67
CFWH in the Yukon Territory started out as part of the US Armed Forces Radio Service in 1944. In 1946, it ws turned over to the Canadian Army, Northwest Highway Service, then to the CBC in 1958. They migrated to the FM dial at 94.5 MHz in 2009 and shut down the AM radio service in 2012. They were doing Top 40 music in the 1960’s, and I could find one survey, from November 27, 1967, so that’s what…

The National Pastime #JusJoJan24
Baseball is America’s National Pastime. Maybe not as popular as football, basketball, or hockey, more popular than soccer (at least here) or lacrosse, but, as the National Baseball Hall of Fame website tells us, the history of baseball and the history of the US are intertwined so tightly that sometimes it’s hard to tell which you’re looking at. I grew up a Chicago White Sox fan, during some of…

Song of the Day: Teresa Brewer, "Choo'n Gum"
Songwriter Vic Mizzy was born on this day in 1916. I talked about him a couple of months ago when we were discussing TV themes, of which he wrote several. Mizzy wrote “Choo’n Gum” with Mann Curtis, and it was covered by Teresa Brewer as well as The Andrews Sisters, Kitty Kallen, and Dean Martin. Teresa’s version reached #17 on the Billboard chart and #11 on Cash Box in 1950.

Share Your World for January 8, 2024
It’s that time again… When you look out of your kitchen window, what do you see? The back yard. When was the last time you used public transport? It’s been a good twenty years. There hasn’t been a reason to. Do you prefer cut flowers or a potted plant? A potted plant. Just a few minutes ago Mary walked in with a poinsettia from church, which was un-decorated for Christmas yesterday. Do you…

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" Results
My last Botb featured Cole Porter’s “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” from the musical Kiss Me, Kate. The contestants were Keenan Wynn and James Whitmore, who playd “Lippy” and “Slug” in the 1953 film adaptation, and Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, TV’s “Odd Couple” from that long-running sitcom, who recorded it as part of the 1973 album The Odd Couple Sings. The votes have been tallied and here are the…

MMMM: (Thom) Bell
It was on this day in 1982 that AT&T was ordered to divest itself of the “baby Bells,” what had been known as the Bell System. So in honor of that important event, I chose ten songs that were written by and/or produced by Philly Soul producer and songwriter Thom Bell. Today’s Playlist The Delfonics, “La La (Means I Love You)” Dusty Springfield, “Brand New Me” Connie Stevens, “Keep Growing…

A Quote About Gratitude #JusJoJan24
After my stroke, I was feeling really down and wished everything would just go back to normal. I knew I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the things I had been able to do before then. A nun from West Africa who was assigned to our parish came to the hospital to bring me Communion, and I kind of poured my heart out to her. She said, “Think of where you were when you came into the hospital! You’ve…

Song Lyric Sunday: The Beatles, "Old Brown Shoe"
Christine over at Stine Writing came up with today’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, “song that mentions clothing accessories.” It took me all of ten seconds to decide what song to choose… “Old Brown Shoe” was written by George Harrison and was the flip side of the single “The Ballad Of John and Yoko.” In the US, it appeared on the Hey Jude album, a collection of songs that somehow never made it to an…

Just Dood It! #socs #JusJoJan24
Red Skelton had a catchphrase for his character “Mean Widdle Kid”: “I get a whippin’ if I dood it. I dood it!” They wrote a whole movie for him to star in, and named it I Dood It. Had quite a few stars of its time in it, too: Eleanor Powell, Bob Eberly, Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra, and the incredible Lena Horne. Now there’s a chanteuse! One of my favorite scenes from The Andy Griffith Show…

Song of the Day: Chicago, "Prelude to Aire/Aire"
The late Brazilian percussionist Laudir de Oliveira was born on this day in 1940. He played with Chicago from 1973 to 1981, as well as with Sergio Mendes in the 1960’s. His first album with the band was 1974’s Chicago VII, which saw the band return to its jazz roots. “Prelude to Aire/Aire” were the first two tracks on the album.

Five For Friday: Judy Garland (Chanteuses)
I did a Two for Tuesday series on Chanteuses (i.e. women singers) at the end of 2016 and, after a discussion with some of my other readers, felt that it was time to do another series about them, mostly because I got the sense that many of you weren’t around back then. So, we’ll start today and do this for a few months, maybe even all year, because there are so many great ones. We’ll start with…

Song of the Day: Hugh "Lumpy" Brannum, "Erie Canal"
Singer, arranger, composer, and actor Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum was born on this day in 1910. Kids who watched Captain Kangaroo during its long run will remember him as Mr. Green Jeans; on that show, he also voiced the character Grandfather Clock. He met Bob Keeshan (who played the Captain) when they were working with Fred Waring in the late 1940’s. This recording of “Erie Canal” was done sometime in…

Trainers And Comedians #JusJoJan24
George Carlin once said that a class clown had to be able to attract attention to himself. That’s also the trick when you’re an instructor. In fact, frequently we use the same techniques for getting attention, i.e. telling jokes. I had one class in particular that thought I was hilarious, and I started getting the high that must come with being a comedian: the more they laughed, the crazier I…
