Jason never felt comfortable in suits - as a kid they had fit too big in places on his awkward frame. And now they fit awkwardly in different places - stretching tight over his shoulders, pinching at his waist when he tried to button them up. And ties had always felt something like fastening a noose around his neck. But when this time of year rolled around, he shrugged one on without his usual griping and complaining, meticulously checking the position of his tie in the mirror as he fastened it.

The rosary beads he tucked into the pocket of his jacket weren’t his mother’s - he’d lost most everything that belonged to her when he went into care. But they were close enough to the ones he remembered her having, enough that he thought she might like them. After everything he knew of death, he didn’t believe in an afterlife - not when one had never been granted to him - but she had. And that was worth enough to keep her in his thoughts on the anniversary of her death. Just in case he was wrong.

“I’m heading out soon.” Jason called through to the living room where he could hear Rory moving around. He smoothed down the lapels of his jacket as he stepped through. He didn’t keep diligently to attending mass - attending it frequently as they could had been his mother’s wish, but it hadn’t much stuck with him. After he moved in with Bruce it had felt wrong to replace her with his new parent in something that had been so important to her. And then when he stopped believing entirely he’d had no desire to go at all. But there were always a few services around Thanksgiving, and he made an effort to go to one of them since he moved to Central City, too far away from Gotham to reliably visit her grave.

“I, uh,” He fiddled awkwardly with the cuffs of his sleeves as he avoided Rory’s gaze. “I know it’s not like... fun, or anything. But I thought I’d offer if you wanted to come with me.”

And it might be weird for Dick, so if he bows out, I’ll understand. And Damian is Damian. But I need you and Steph more then anyone. You’ve both picked me up when no one else could. When I wasn’t strong enough you’ve been my strength. And when I was scared, you held my hand. And Jason, I’m terrified. No Bat has been able to get married with out it blowing up and someone dying. I can’t lose him. I don’t think there would be enough piece of me left if Christian died.”

“You know I’m used to being up and ready at a moment’s notice. Atlantic City, Vegas - hell, the other side of the world. You need me there, I’ll be there.” Jason promised her, placing a small kiss to her temple to seal the deal before taking her hand in his and gripping it tightly. “Well, statistically, if the place does blow up I’m the likeliest candidate for dying.” He joked morbidly. “But I’m gonna do everything I can to make sure you have a normal, happy, non-explosive wedding. I promise. Nothing’s gonna happen to you two so long as I’m around.”

It wasn’t often that she got to banter around with people like this, but in the moments that she did, she highly relished in the feeling it gave her. It was a much welcomed distraction and it made her feel better about starting her new life. “Like, I bet you couldn’t even lift me. You don’t look like you’ve got a lot of game. Rory looks much stronger.”

“Are you really sure you want to take me up on that challenge. Because I will lift you just to prove a point.” Jason warned with a small laugh, scooping up Alfie instead, the stocky dog panting happily as he was easily hefted into Jason’s arms. “Come on, you can’t be much heavier than this guy and I can bench press him with one arm easy.”

“I wear a tight suit, and go around kicking ass, so I think that classifies as a hero, yes,” he let out a small laugh, it seemed to be something that at least 90% of the heroes wear tight suits, maybe because it’s easier to move, “Well, I had to leave earth and my spaceship ended up in a wormhole which caused me to be sent to the future.”

“Ah, yeah, the tight spandex I do not miss.” Jason chuckled. He much preferred the tactical gear of his Red Hood suit to any bright and tight supersuit someone tried to shove on him. “Shit, that must have been scary.” Jason muttered with a small frown. Being shot off to space for one thing, but then being faced with a wormhole and not knowing where you’d land on the other side. “I take it whatever you had to leave for isn’t a problem now.”

dick let out a huff at jason’s protest, not really to let him go just yet, before he eventually released his hold and gave jason a good pound on the back, “it’s nice.” he assured him, “you know, we always move around, the nicest i’ve ever lived has to be titans tower. this reminds me of it.” dick’s memories of the tower had been nothing but pleasant, a home filled with warmth and camaraderie, and a lot of first. “i’m proud of you.” dick finally offered jason a wider smile, “why don’t you show me around?”

“Ow.” Jason complained just for the sake of it, rubbing dramatically at the spot on his back that Dick pounded. “Yeah?” His eyes lit up immediately at the comparison. His tenure at the Tower had been all too short, but he had been in awe of it every moment he spent there. He felt himself flush at the praise - he had spent a good portion of his teenage years wanting desperately to live up to Dick, to make him feel that his successor was worthy. Dick had never made him doubt it, but all the same, hearing him express his pride made Jason feel like an over-eager kid again. “I- yeah, let’s-” He cleared his throat roughly to try and push past the mushy feeling, sweeping his arm out for Dick to follow as he led him up the stairs first to show off the upper floor.

Sipping from her drink some more, Angel nodded as Jason spoke further and she felt compelled to comment on that one too. She felt comfortable around him, like she could be herself and he wouldn’t judge her for anything. It also helped that he knew her story and still decided to stick around since his own past pretty much paralleled it. Angel didn’t think that there were many people in the world like her and Jason. “You mean, Rory did all of the unpacking while you sat back and watched with a bottle of beer in your hand? Or did you actually help and do some of the heavy lifting like a good boyfriend?”

“Too many times.” Jason chuckled at her question. “Never anywhere that felt like it was going to be permanent until now.” He clarified with a small smile. It was the first time since he lived in Wayne Manor that he felt comfortable calling a place ‘home’. “Hey, I did help.” He defended himself with a mock-affronted look. “These guns aren’t just for show. I can pull my weight.”

Considering that when he was a kid, he was still in Daxam, he didn’t have to deal with the same as the other, but he did have a lot of responsibilities already as a prince, and was already judged on a daily basis. A lot of what people said, was true though, so he couldn’t blame them, “I can only imagine how hard that must have been to a kid,” he wasn’t sure if he would be able to do it if he had to deal with the same. Kids were supposed to enjoy their childhood, not save lives, “Yeah, not a common thing, though I didn’t really choose to go to the future, the first time was an accident, the second, I had to do it to help humankind.”

“So you’re the hero type?” Jason noted with a slightly teasing smirk. Mon El definitely had the air of a superhero about him even if he wasn’t wearing a suit, Jason had found even outside of masks it wasn’t easy to shake the stance they all adopted. “How do you time travel by accident, exactly? I’m not sure I want to stumble upon the answer casually.”

Helps you worry less and protects both of you.” Rose met his smile with a soft one of her own. He would always be an important part of her life and if she could ensure he lived a happy and good one, then she would. He deserved some normalcy and happiness for once.

“Uh…yeah, you do.” She glanced over to him with a sheepish smile. She could guess how he was going to react — she wasn’t embarrassed to tell him bur it was still a weird dynamic, she knew that. “I mean, he’s your brother after all. Guess it runs in the family.”

A lovesick grin tugged at his lips at someone referring to Rory as ‘his person’. “Protects you too.” He noted. He knew that Rory and Rose both cared enough about him to look out for the people he cared about, but the fact they cared about each other, it was an extra level of protection for them both.

His eyebrows raised slightly in surprise at the revelation. “Which brother?” He questioned, though he had a sneaking suspicion. Tim wasn’t exactly in any position to be patrolling the streets after all and, well... he knew Dick and Rose had had something.

“Oh of course, what eccentric billionaire wouldn’t.” Jason drawled, matching her tone with a small smile. It faltered a little at her request though, his mouth dropping open in shock at the request as he stared at her. “...You’re serious?” He questioned softly. He hadn’t always seen eye to eye with Christian, but he made Babs happy, and that was all Jason really needed to be on board with it. He hadn’t exactly anticipated being more than a guest at the wedding just like anyone else, certainly not involved in such a pivotal part of it. “Babs...” He could feel his eyes beginning to well-up embarrassingly as he took her hands in his, a watery laugh escaping his lips. “If you’re sure then yeah, I- I’d be honoured.”

Secrets ran deep in their families so she was glad he was able to open up with those he cared about, it wasn’t easy but it showed they were growing out of their shadows. “It just depends on who were hiding ourselves from - the bad guys or our loved ones. Sometimes we lump them together and that’s when it backfires…”

She sighed, crossing her legs as she rocked in the chair. “You know me, I always like running solo. Ignore the present state of my face — that was a rare mishap.” she cut him off before he could protest, then continued. “Um, but yeah I think I do….I think he’s learning to trust I have his back too.”

“It does.” Jason admitted, shooting Rose a grateful smile. “And there’s no one I trust more to look out for her.” He told her. Rose had saved his ass more times than he could count, knowing she was doing the same for Rory warmed his heart more than he could put into words. “Yeah... I don’t plan on making that mistake again.” Jason sighed. He knew he had often been guilty of marrying up enemies and allies in his head, especially when it came to his family. It was something he was working hard on.

“Do I know him?” He asked, doing his best not to sound wary of whoever Rose might be placing her trust in. He trusted her judgement, but still. He was protective, that instinct hadn’t faded even after they broke up.

alex smiled when she watched ellie seem to settle comfortably in a new person’s grip, already taking over for herself and interacting with the dog without needing any of their supervision. “you’re a natural.” alex pointed out to jason, “you’ve been around a lot of babies?” 

“the same way everyone does, trial and error.” alex responded with a more matter-of-fact tone, puzzled over the trepidation in his tone. the great red hood possibly being afraid of exploring new horizons was…uncharacteristic to say the least. but unlike the batman, most of his clan separated their vigilante identities from who they were. that was the first step. alex could help the amused laughter at his admission, “okay, that’s not the worst one i heard. try this one on for size, i went to medical school, not only because it was the most perfect thing to do, but because i watched ER like it was the only thing in the world that mattered.” alex whipped her hand around in a playful flourish near her head, “and i had a crush on dr. abby lockhart, but that’s neither here nor there. my point is, have you ever wondered why you wanted to be an archeologist? beside the fact that indiana jones is the coolest bastard ever.” 

“so that’s the safe option.” alex vocalized with a shrug, “it’s good to have a safe option. now you need to figure out the crazy one.”

“Just the one, really. My niece.” Jason muttered. He had only held his son once, at Barbara’s insistence, to say goodbye, give him a chance even in a brief moment to know the boy. But with Lux he had slowly been able to adjust to the gentle hand needed when around a baby. “Took a lot of practice but I think I got the hang of it with her and then... well, I guess it’s easy enough to transfer that to other babies.” He shrugged, careful not to jostle Ellie too much as he held her.

“Who didn’t have a crush on Lockhart?” Jason joked with a small smile. “I liked history in school. English lit and drama too - I wasn’t great in science classes. Never seemed to grab my attention. But I gravitated to learning about other people - real or otherwise. I liked seeing people living lives different from my own, wondering what it would be like.” He admitted with a sheepish duck of his head. “But I don’t know what to do with that - what my ‘crazy’ option would be from that.”

Jason flicked through the file handed to him with a curious smile. His fingers brushed over the thick parchment paper of the degree certificate a little reverently. Hanging it up anywhere felt a little disingenuous, but it still gave him a sense of longing to see it, fake or not. “Plausible deniability - can’t fake my death when I didn’t really know who I was in the first place, huh?”

“As promised,” Barbara said with a grin handing Jason the file, “A whole new life. You studied the Humanities in Prague while you pieced your life back together. Your memory was damaged during the explosion and Bruce saw this as an opportunity to give you a life outside of Crime Alley and The Wayne Legacy.”\
