I’m finally heading back to the Rockies after months of continuous travel. 😊 It’s been such a pleasure visiting and photographing such wild extremes on our planet… but the mountains are beckoning! Newborn lake, Waputik Icefield. The increasingly warm summers are leading to rapid changes here in the Canadian Rockies, one of them being the appearance of more and more of those "supraglacial" lakes - bodies of water that form in depressions right on the local glaciers, sometimes at very high elevations. Also, today is Parks Canada's birthday! Banff National Park, the first national park established in Canada, was created in 1885. It was first called the Hot Springs Reserve, then Rocky Mountains National Park before it was eventually called Banff. It's interesting how much the landscapes have changed since the national parks were first created. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/qwRcOdj

Whales galore! A moment from Antarctica, shot when an estimated 100 fin whales surrounded our ship as we departed Elephant Island - absolutely phenomenal. I shot a few hundred frames of this rough composition looking towards moody Clarence Island, and was struck by how many blows were visible in this particular shot. That evening was such a great Antarctica sendoff. An hour later we lost sight of the continent and made our way towards South Georgia. #goodtripsonly — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/7Ld2tJI

Did you know, the King penguin, like all 18 species of penguins, is legally protected from hunting and egg collecting? 🐧 The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 makes it illegal to harm or interfere with a penguin or its eggs, and researchers must have a special permit to collect specimens. Perhaps it explains why these creatures are still incredibly plentiful on South Georgia. I'm grateful for it! #goodtripsonly #penguins #southgeorgia #southgeorgiaisland — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/GSxpt7C

Lonely night at Panther Falls - one I will never forget. Between the roar of the tumbling water, the aurora overhead, and the blackness below, it all felt a little otherworldly. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for allowing me to share these special mountain moments on here. #ShotonCanon #CanonAmbassador — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/LbrtQH9

What was meant to be a quick road stop on our drive from Sigulda, Latvia, to Tallinn, Estonia, became a favourite spot on our family trip to the Baltics last month. Springtime breakup at Two Jack Lake. The soundtrack was phenomenal that night, with the ice floes bumping againsit the lakeshore. 24 hours later, the ice had vanished. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/kbFv47G

Some more images from our family trip to the Baltics (and trip home through Helsinki)! On these trips, family is of course the priority. So, over the years, Meg and I have developed a system to ensure I get time to capture images while we're visiting these incredible places. I often do my scouting while we're out touring as a family and then find pockets of time - usually at night or the "blue hour" - to go take some images. Here are a few from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland! 1. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn, Estonia 2. Dobele Castle Ruins, Latvia 3. Moody morning, Gulf of Riga, Latvia 4. Tea-coloured water of the Amata River, Latvia 5. Palanga Beach, Lithuania 6. The Senate Square, Helsinki — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/jVGFtiR

Earth Day reminds us to pause and consider what it is we risk losing and how to take better care of our planet. Ice and snow have long fascinated me with the endless shapes and forms they take. Their beauty is something I marvel at each time I have the opportunity to explore frozen landscapes, especially knowing they will never look the same way twice. The Natural Bridge - a geological wonder that has brought wonder to so many over the years. At night, the place takes on a surreal quality, especially when no one else is around. I recently had the pleasure to witness the aurora borealis dance above this iconic scene. I lowered a @lumecube on a rope to light up the torrent in this self-portrait. Much of our time in Latvia revolved around beautiful Gauja National Park. As a family, we spent hours wandering through the woods, exploring the riverbanks and looking for caves. As a photographer, Gauja offered countless opportunities for all kinds of imagery. Here are a few corners of the park that caught my eye. #EUfunds #latviatravel #entergauja #latvia — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/tmf1KHX

Stromness at Last... A few days ago I referred to the incredible survival story of the Endurance Expedition, and shared an image from Elephant Island, where began the perilous quest for civilization. This image shows where the mission ended, when the men finally set eyes on the Stromness whaling station nearly a month after leaving Elephant Island. This is very similar to the view they would have had on May 20th, 1916 (with less snow and minus the ship). Our group had only hiked a few kilometres and up a few hundred metres to get to this vantage point. It's hard to fathom the relief that Shackleton, Crean and Worsley would have felt after their harrowing journey over a century ago. with @cjonesphoto — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/ZOrvjHS
