In memory of Arnie Bloom, who passed away in January. He was the star of many of my reviews and videos since the beginning of this channel, but more importantly, he was my beloved Dad. I made a film with him in 2015 where he spoke candidly and movingly about his life. I strongly encourage you to do the same with your loved ones before it's too late. gopb.co/dadfilm
I love you, Dad.
Sony's ZV-E1 is the most underrated camera they've released, possibly ever. Find out why in this review.

Kastro, Skiathos: DJI Mini 3 Pro & Mavic 3 Tele-Camera 8K from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
Footage was filmed during my review of the DJI Mini 3 Pro which you can watch here: youtu.be/35U93YnBmE8

All footage was enhanced and upscaled to 8K using Topaz Labs Video Enhance AI. You can get get a free demo here: gopb.co/topaz
Why 8K? Some people have 8K TVs, don't they? I don't though!
Graded with Film Convert Nitrate, 10% off here: gopb.co/filmconvert
The footage from the top tele camera of the Mavic 3 was the hardest to look good due to the much poorer quality sensor, optics and processing of the camera as well as only working in auto at the time of filming.
Kastro is in Skiathos, Greece. My second home :)

"Six Weeks Earlier" Filmed with the Z Cam E2-F6 & E2 M4 from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
I was hired by Z Cam to shoot some slow-motion footage to promote their new firmware which has given their cameras Prores 422 internal recording across the board for the different resolutions and frame rates. Prior to this, you were limited to H265 for high frame rates,
This edit is filmed in locations that will be familiar to people who follow my work. It's Richmond, near where I live. I've filmed there so many times but there's always something new to see. Initially, on the 9th of February, I used the E2-F6 to film the snow, something that always looks good in slow motion, then I moved onto the main shopping street.
6 weeks later I went back to do some match shots and more, to make the most of the first really warm day of the year, 2 days after the clocks went forward so longer daylight evenings. It was also the first day of the slight relaxation in lockdown, letting up to 6 people meet up outside albeit with social distancing....not that this has been followed either then, before or now!
For the F6 I used the Viltrox E-mount adaptor and the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM, the 2x extender, Sony 135mm F1.8 GM, 24mm F1.4 GM, and 35mm F1.8. I shot in both the low and high base ISOs only. Shooting in Z log.
The the M4, I used the Metabones speed booster 0.71x, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L F.2.8 II, 100-400mm L F4.5-5.6 II, 24-70mm L F2.8 II and the 16-35mm L F4.
Grading was with Cinematch simply converted it to REC 709, Filmconvert Nitrate and the occasional LUT as well as additional colour correction.
You can get a 20% discount on Cinematch at gopb.co/cinematch and 10% off Filmconvert at gopb.co/filmconvert
I've used the original E2 for years and it's a good value camera with some nice high frame rates. The F6 though is a REALLY nice camera with a very clean image and fantastic scan modes including the full sensor "open gate". I really recommend this camera.
Gear: E2- F6: gopb.co/f6 E2-M4: gopb.co/m4 Viltrox E mount adaptor: gopb.co/viltrox Metabones .71x speedbooster (cine ones do not fit on M4) gopb.co/metabones71x

COVID-19: Video 1 -19th March 2020, Richmond - Kinefinity MAVO LF 6K from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
I need to say this straight off, I am not advocating you all going out with your cameras, I am just explaining what I am doing and why. Please do not do this if your country/ city is in lockdown! Mine isn't...for now.
We are all going through a very scary time, something that most of us have never experienced anything like. I am not going to go into my opinion about the situation and if my government or other governments are doing the right thing. I am not going to go into the financial impact it will have on us all, most of us already know this. As a documentary filmmaker, I feel that I have to try and capture what I can of London, my home, over the next few weeks/ months. Naturally, this will only be possible if we don't have an enforced lockdown imposed on us and of course as long as I don't get ill.
The way I will be documenting will be through images, not voices. My first video is of Richmond, the part of London where I live and the subject of many many camera tests! I wanted to capture the mood and the atmosphere during this time. Every few days I will go out, not just to Richmond, but to other parts of London to do the same. Things will change here over the next few weeks, things are changing rapidly day by day after all! I know countless people are filming the capital but I need to do this for myself.
I will be taking no risks, I will be driving. I will be keeping my distance from people, as you will see this video was shot entirely with long lenses, the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS L II and the Sigma 105mm F1.4 ART. I will be taking all the precautions necessary. I have no desire to catch the virus, although there is a chance I had it a month ago when I got very sick as the symptoms were quite similar, but until I can get a test that shows that I had it and am not carrying it then I will be staying clear of people. Not just for my benefit but for theirs. I cannot even go and see my parents which is really hard for me as I want to be there for them. I am stuck at home on my own, just with the cats for company!
Canon 70-200mm L IS F2.8: https://bit.ly/70200canonpb Sigma 105mm F1.4 ART EF: http://bit.ly/105efpbsigma
This first edit was filmed 3 days (19/3/20) after the Prime Minister asked us to avoid pubs, restaurants, bars etc. and for social distancing. Are people listening? For the most part yes, but not all. Richmond was certainly no ghost town last night. Today though (20/3/20) he ordered them to close from midnight so it will be a very different picture tomorrow.
I shot this video with the Kinefity MAVO LF in 6k at 50fps which is a nice frame rate as it is super easy to go to normal speed if needed, although all but one shot I kept at slow motion. The Kinefitnity cameras always record audio no matter what you are recording. If you are off-speed like here it saves the audio as left and right .wav files. So all the audio here is from the actuals shots. The microphone I used was the RØDE Video Mic NTG. The pre-amps in the MAVO are OK, but the great thing about this mic is you can send in a really strong signal and set the camera level nice and low for good clean sound.
Get the RØDE Video Mic NTG here: https://bit.ly/rodevideomicntg
The image out of this camera is just superb. It was a bit out of practice with tracking people with manual focus after shooting with the Sony FX9 so much but I did OK! I have the new 7" Kinemon which is nice and bright and has excellent peaking. Plus Canon EF lenses tend to be easier to manually focus with than their Sony equivalent as they are mechanical not just electronic.
Anyway, enough babbling. Here is the first edit. I don't know exactly when my next one will be, I will gauge it from how busy Richmond is over the next few days by driving through it.
This was graded with the amazing new Film Convert Nitrate using the ARRI ALEXA profiles as the image is so similar to them. I was shooting at high ISOs of around 12,800 fairly frequently, especially when using the 70-200 F2.8 later in the evening. The end shots by the river were at 25,600. I did use a little bit of neat video there because I was still under-exposed as it was so dark there. If you can get exposure with high ISO this camera is remarkably clean!
kinefinity.com/shop/mavo_lf/?lang=en/ Music is from Audio Network - Luke Richards "Last Man On Earth" (not chosen for its gloomy title, it just fitted perfectly)

Postcard from Miami Beach from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
FROM 2O14
A couple of mornings and a couple of evenings of filming down at Miami Beach by Ocean Drive with the Sony FS700 and the beta firmware for 4K raw recording with the Odyssey 7Q.
Shot at 4K at 50p, slowed down to 25p in post for slow motion. Also a few shots at 2K 200FPS upscaled in Davinici Resolve.
4K ProRes Proxy version of around 3GB is available for download on my vimeo page vimeo.com/bloomworld/miami
The raw is uncompressed Cinema DNG. There are no other options. There is no ProRes 4K as of yet. Hopefully soon as the raw it creates massive file sizes. Way bigger than the Sony raw option. 12 minutes = 512gb! OUCH! Terrific quality but that's too big for me. I cannot handle that size data.
Blog post with review coming shortly.
Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, Tamron 24-70mm F2.8, Canon 70-200mm F4. Metabones EF adaptor and Speedboster.
Initial colour correction in Davinci Resolve which was giving me some grief with the Cinema DNGs from the Odyssey. Audio wasn't linked and a shots just wouldn't play properly. Beta firmware don't forget.

"Charmolipi: a feeling of joy and sorrow" - Fuji GFX 100 from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
Charmolipi is the perfect word and title for this film. It is an old Greek work made up of 'chara' (joy) and 'lipi' (sadness). There is no equivalent word in English, it means a feeling of happiness and sadness at the sad time.
This is the most personal film I have ever made. It was filmed whilst I was on holiday in what has essentially become my second home due to my connection to it, Skiathos. I set out to make a film that explained why I love going there, to show the beauty of this island in the best way I could. I also needed to show why it is a place that can make me profoundly sad and after each visit these two feelings become so entwined it is hard to feel one without the other. That is what the goal of the film was. Events took over though and it became something much more that was planned.
Initially it will feel like a bit of a travelogue, but it really is not. You are meeting "characters" here. Different locations, places, things and cats that all play a big role within the film as it progresses. As I am your eyes I am also a character, there are people in it but they, bar a couple of people, are all very much in the background. There is a reason for this and it's something you will understand by the end.
It is hard to define what specific genre this film is. It is not a documentary but in many ways it is because it is real, it tells a story, an evolving one but it's not a documentary in the traditional; sense. It's a very emotive film and as I mentioned this is very personal; 2 weeks though my eyes feeling what I feel conveyed with beautiful visuals and beautiful music. It is also very rich in natural sound.
There is no voice over and only about 10 words spoken visually on camera. The story is through the images and sound as well as the text that I sprinkle throughout the film.
I hope this film connects with you, it was a labour of love and means the world to me. It also took everything out of me both filming and reliving it again and again and again whilst editing it.
It was filmed with the Fujiflm GFX100 which I borrowed from Fuji UK for the trip. The film is about half handheld and half locked down tripod shots. No fancy pieces of gear. 99% was shot with the 45mm F2.8 and the 110mm F2, with variable NDs from Polar Pro. I did use the 23mm on a couple of cars shots but that was it. The camera was amazing. I loved everything about it. Maybe not the HD 60p as that wasn't very good, but the 4K image is just beautiful. It was all either shot with the Eterna profile or in F-Log and the Eterna LUT. All was modified with additional colour work in Premiere.
Audio was the Rode Video Micro into the camera and in some places the Zoom H2 with stereo shotgun microphone.
All music was from Audio Network through their new monthly subscription service. A full list of the tracks used is a bit further down audionetwork.com
If you could help the charity I would be so grateful. They do such amazing work to keep these beautiful animals fed and healthy. I haven't seen a Greek island with so many healthy looking cats, its a huge credit to them. Their website is skiathos-cats.org
I have made many films in Skiathos now and this is probably my favourite of them, in fact it could one of the films I am most proud of in my career. The Skiathos Kittens series is also very special to me because of the cats that I adopted who feature in it. You can see this series in this playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list...
All music used is in chronological order:
“Elysian Fields” Bob Bradley, Christopher Wonfor “Bosque Renewed” Christopher Slaski “Near the surface” John Ashton Thomas “Unforseen Consequences” - Paul Mottram “Secret Beauty” Luke Richards “Piscine Dance” John Ashton Thomas “Reflecting" Christopher Slaski “Legacy Unfolds” Amie Doherty “Passage of time” Luke Richards “Starting Over” Amie Doherty “Claire De Lune” Claude Debussy. Arrangement David Tobin, Jeff Meegan, Julian Gallant, Rob Kelly “Falling in Air” Julie Cooper “Moment of Decision” Michael Levine, Bijan Olia, Charles Sicouri “Reunited” Luke Richards “Another Year” Chris Egan “Thoughtful conclusion” John Ashton Thomas

Infrared Mavic 2 Pro from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
Deliberately reversed to add an additional layer of strangeness...the colours were not achieved in post. This was filmed with a modified to infrared full spectrum DJI Mavic 2 Pro by Kolari Vision. IR Chrome filter fitted over the lens to selectively filtrate the regular colour spectrum. This filter emulates Aerochrome film.
You can get your current Mavic 2 Pro modded by them or buy one already done through them. You will need the filters and especially the “hot mirror IR” one so you can also shoot with normal colours.

I will be uploading an in depth video all about this as well as showcasing all the different looks that are possible as well as the technical part so you understand what is actually going on here soon!
