Warnings: Brief mention of blood

Carmy wasn’t sure what was wrong with him.
All day, he’d been unable to focus on a single thing at work. He had had a strange dream the night before- not a nightmare, as was his norm, but random snapshots that had him waking up feeling content if more than a little confused.
A few seconds of someone humming along to a cheesy pop song on the radio.
The rich, almost chocolatey aroma of roasting coffee beans.
The cuff of the sleeve of a soft woollen cardigan brushing against his fingertips.
He found himself frowning down at the onions he was dicing in preparation for lunch service. It was like the feeling of coming into a room and immediately forgetting why you’d done so in the first place.
It was pissing him the fuck off.
“Good morning, fuckos!”
Richie’s louder than usual greeting had him setting his knife down to give the man a tired look.
“You know that’s not how normal adults enter their workplace, right? Like I could fire you for that?”
“But you love me too much.”
“Whatever,” he grumbled, turning back to his prep.
Richie whistled lowly.
“Someone’s tetchy this morning,” he commented, taking a long sip from the coffee cup in his hand, “Not had your morning coffee? That new place down the street is fuckin’ great. Girl’s real sweet too, gave me a croissant on the house.”
Carmy’s head whipped up to look at his own distorted reflection in the steel appliances. It was as though someone had poured cold water on him and woken him from a trance.
It was you that he had heard humming that song that he hated when Richie sang but had smiled when you did. It was the exact kind of coffee beans you used that he had been craving since he woke up. It had been your cardigan that had been so soft against his fingertips as you handed him his cappuccino the day before.
Completely distracted, the knife slipped in his hand.
“Fuck!”
The cut on the side of his finger was tiny but the sting of the acid from the onion had it burning, his prep ruined as droplets of blood rained down. Moving to the sink, the cold water soothed the stinging until he could feel his pulse in his fingertip.
“Cousin, you good?” Richie asked in confusion, “You sleep okay? Maybe you should go grab a coffee.”
Carmy let out an amused huff as his stomach flipped pleasantly at the thought of going to get a coffee and seeing you.
“Yeah,” he agreed, “Maybe I should.”

Early mornings in the Bean where your only customer is Carmy? Best way to start the day honestly.
You got it, bestie 🥰
The Bear and The Bean universe

You were pleasantly surprised when, on opening day, the door to The Bean opened with the faint chime of the bell just a little after seven-thirty. Sleep had evaded you the previous night, replaced by the horrible thought that no customers would ever appear.
“Morning,” Carmy greeted you, and your stomach flipped- not unpleasantly- at the sight of him.
He wasn’t yet in the chef’s whites he’d worn when you met him the day before, dressed instead in a white t-shirt and black jeans, a rucksack hanging from one shoulder. His curls were as messy as they had been the previous evening, making you suspect that that was their default appearance.
“Hi!” you replied excitedly, “You came!”
“Course. Happy opening day.”
Your smile widened.
“Thank you, Carmy! What can I get you?”
He studied the menu blackboard over your head that you had spent an hour meticulously writing out the night before for a few seconds.
“A cappuccino would be great, please.”
“Coming right up!”
You forced yourself to remain calm as you got to work, steaming and frothing milk in preparation to combine with the espresso. It was hard not to be excited by having your first customer.
“The place looks great,” Carmy spoke up while your back was to him.
“Thank you! I’m thinking I might make a few tweaks, maybe paint some designs on the counter front. Flowers, maybe.”
“That’d be pretty,” he agreed, “It’d look nice with the green background.”
You beamed at him as you secured a lid on his takeaway cup and held it out to him, your fingers brushing his as he took it from you carefully. It was impossible not to bite your lip as he took his first sip; a professional chef as your first ever customer was no small thing.
“Well?” you asked nervously.
“That-” he said, holding the cup up, “-might be the best cappuccino I’ve ever had.”
A surprised burst of laughter came from your lips.
“Fuck off!”
“I’m serious! It’s fuckin’ fire. How much do I owe you?”
You shook your head immediately.
“Nope, I meant what I said yesterday. No charge after you saved my ass last night.”
“Come on. How much?”
“Get out of my shop, Berzatto.”
He grinned at you and you returned it easily.
“Fine, but tomorrow you’re letting me pay.”
Your grin softened to a pleased smile as he backed towards the door.
“Tomorrow,” you agreed.

Something I learned in these last seven months is that when children get war-related amputations, they need further surgeries as they grow.
I'd read it on Twitter so I looked it up to confirm (and it's true) but a lot of the search results were hospitals and doctors trying to explain the process to parents and what to tell their children, what kind of care they'd need after, how prosthetics would work.
I just saw this adorable little baby on Twitter (you can click to view the video, it's not gory, he's just a super serious little dude)
Tumblr media
and I thought, fleeing from Rafah must be one of the most traumatizing dangerous situations you could be in right now as a healthy adult, let alone a baby with multiple amputations in famine conditions.
There are no working hospitals to speak of in Gaza, healthcare workers keep being killed off, aid keeps being blocked, many of the amputees have no one to look after them, there's still constant bombing and shelling and shooting.
UNICEF reported 1,000 child amputees by the end of November.

This war has to stop. Israel is stopping aid from getting into Gaza and people are starving.

I'd also like to bring attention to the situation of Yusuf, who's in desperate need of medical attention and is stranded in Rafah with his family during the invasion.
His case was already urgent before. It is ever more urgent now.

Had the funniest experience earlier of my swiftie coworker putting the new white girl breakup songs™️ album on the speaker at work and the moment she left the room long enough for her phone to disconnect from Bluetooth our older coworker immediately put on 10 hours of relaxing tibetan flute music instead and we all collectively sighed in relief
