I am both of these types of fans.🩷
There two types of analog horrer fans.
One is just, "This complex series of videos creates a perfect mix between tension and horror. The art is unnerving, the story is horrific, and the editing is amazing. Besutiful and terrifying work."
Then theres the other, "OH MY GOD!!!!! I LOVE THIS LITTLE SCRUNKLE SOOOO MUCH 💖❤️💖❤️‍🩹💕❤️‍🩹💕💗💕❤️‍🩹💖!!!!! I WANNA GIVE HIM ALLLL THE KISSES! 👄❤️❤️💖💕❤️💕👄💖💕❤️‍🩹❤️❤️‍🩹❤️💖👄💓💖💓💕💓👄❤️❤️👄💖" and this is what they're talking about:

Explaining Internet Horror in 3 Sentences or Less (spoilers!)
Marble Hornets - The OG, King of Internet Horror IMO. The Operator is not Slendy, he just suspiciously looks like Slendy.
EverymanHYBRID - You thought one ageless eldritch horror was rough? IMAGINE THREE.
Mandela Catalogue - Please, please don't turn on the TV (the TV aliens might get you!!!!). Also, JONAH DESERVED BETTER.
Walten Files - Consistent headphone warning, but it works!
Gilbert Garfield - Garfield the cat, experimentation, Egypt, Italy, and aliens.
SCP Foundation - THE LORE!! IT WILL BE ONGOING!!! NEVERENDING!!!
Welcome Home - Immediate tumblr favorite, godly artwork.
Chimpy Chippa's - Australia's only contribution to internet horror, with an exceptional budget.
Monument Mythos - The statues cannot be trusted.
Liminal Land - Summer vacation gone HORRIBLY WRONG.
Boisvert - Triangle man makes fun of you for not going outside. Memes and music are a crucial lore detail. (but is there lore? What is lore?)

Does anyone else feel like it would have been more thematically appropriate and more in character if Ben and Gwen switched roles in Absolute Power? Like putting aside the fact that in original series Ben kept trying to save Kevin up until he literally couldn’t anymore without hurting other people and Gwen was 100% on killing him from the very beginning and has always been one to not trust easily and have that trust broken at the smallest sign of betrayal, it feels like even the theming was meant more for Ben and Kevin’s past then Kevin and Gwen’s, like when Gwen confronted Kevin in the arcade. The arcade? The place where Ben and Kevin met, where Ben saved Kevin for the first time, the start of their relationship? I saw someone say one time that it was still appropriate because Gwen and Kevin also met in an arcade, but it doesn’t have the same impact narratively as it would if it was Ben and Kevin. And i talk about this a lot, but this arc really reduced Gwen to nothing but a Kevin sympathizer, taking any beating he gives her just because she believes in him you guys, really, when she would have thrown him out the second he started hurting Ben as any other Gwen. Like they destroy everything she used to stand for and all of her self respect just for this ship that in this context doesn’t even make sense to be focused on. Meanwhile Ben has given Kevin chances to the point of putting himself in danger before and still feels extremely guilty about what happened when they were kids, so it would make sense for him to ignore all signs that Kevin was too far gone and all protests from his friends and family just because he still has hope. This could even be what makes him stand up to Max, closing the cycle of Ben being told by Max that Kevin could never be saved by proving him wrong, and would introduce more interesting conflict with Gwen as she believes that killing Kevin is the only way to keep the world, and more importantly, Ben, safe. I don’t know, it’s just so weird to me how so much of the theming in Absolute Power is so extremely ben and Kevin and yet they shoehorn Gwevin in once again for no reason, make Gwen a doormat she would never be, and make Ben do a motivation 180. Not a rewrite or anything, it's just interesting to me.

gwevin would have been so much better if gwen retained her love for doohickies and complicated science machinery from ogs.... she looks at that microscope with adoration she doesnt have for her own parents. she would have totally gotten the 'treat a car like you treat a woman' thing. shes got a little heart shaped locket tucked under her shirt and inside is a picture of her ibm. she would love all of his gadgets and shit and fully endorse spending so much money on them he doesnt have money for housing

do you ever think about max's monster. do you ever think about how max was so desperate to save phil, and ben just watched with contempt. do you ever think about how ben keeps telling max that it's obvious phil cant be saved and yet max keeps going, not heeding the warnings, not heeding the call of someone who knows this sort of feeling more than anybody. do you ever think about how ben wants phil to be good but just knows in his gut hes not. do you ever think about how max, through rook, tries to appeal to the only thing he knows, and rook tells ben that phil could be good. kevin was good. and ben glares at him and tells him 'phil is no kevin'. like he knows kevin was a flash in the pan, will never be replicated, no matter how much he tries. do you ever think about how mad ben is at max, using ben's best friend against him, the one he knows ben almost failed to save, the one MAX tried to tell him was a bad egg, nothing but a disobedient dog that needed to be put down, and now hes here trying to appeal to ben using kevin about an old man who never knew the type of pain ben knows kevin did, who willingly let himself go, who wasnt just a scared little boy. do you ever think max didnt mean the words he was saying when he said phil was no kevin. do you ever think he meant them, but he meant 'phil is good in the system. kevin is a blight on it.' do you ever think about how phil turned out to be a rooter, so in the end, max's 'kevin' was just hurting ben's, hurting BEN, the whole time. do you ever wonder how such a loaded episode was in omniverse of all fucking things. do you. DO YOU

a thing i think should be talked about more in Ben and Kevin's relationship (more specifically the Ben and Kevin patented Cycle of Horrors) is how kevin is complicit in it.
Kevin tries to tell Ben as little abt his feelings as possible and show as little weakness, bc he feels like at the first sign of weakness, ben will leave him, or think he's unstable, or think he's dangerous to be around, so he either lies to seem cooler to him or lies by omission (think about all the things that have to be forced out of Kevin to Ben. Ragnarok, his dad, his marriage to looma, vulcanus, everything Kevin either doesn't tell Ben or lies to him abt) Kevin spends all of his time around Ben trying to be as palatable and cool as possible so Ben doesn't ditch him, including hiding how poor he truly is, making how he relies on Ben to pay for food a joke at bens expense instead of his own, or covering up the fact that he doesn't currently have a place to live by lying about having a house party, or excusing his not being able to keep up with sumo slammers as him 'not watching much TV', almost as if he doesn't have a place to. Ben wants so badly to believe that Kevin's doing good too that he'll overlook signs that Kevin is struggling, so as long as Kevin doesn't say anything, Ben won't notice, and they'll stay in the status quo Kevin is so comfortable in, so Kevin can preusmably keep spending all his money on fixing his car and buying alien tech bc the only reason (in his mind) that Ben and Gwen even want him around is that, and he won't talk to them about that to confirm otherwise or he'll die.
most of the reasons Ben and Kevin aren't doing as good as they could be could be solved if they just talked things out but as seen in the show it's physically painful for both of them... I always found it interesting how Kevin loves to sing Ben's praises, sometimes even to his face, but whenever Ben compliments him he either brushes it off or gets upset.... like in duped, when that nice version of Ben tried to tell him he was a good guy now and that he was sorry for what happened, Kevin got upset. it's almost like he subconsciously doesn't WANT Ben to like him and doesn't WANT to be happy bc he knows, as per Ben and Kevin rules, that it'll be ripped away at some point. that's probably why Kevin always forgives Ben no questions asked, bc he assumes this is as good as things are going to get and that it's a privilege Ben's even kept him around this long, but in doing that he never lets Ben know how hurt he is, so Ben keeps going, on and on and on until a situation happens that brings everything to the surface, they treat each other like shit for a bit, and then they both come crawling back, pretending like nothing happened, with not even a sorry.
Kevin wants it to stay like this, Ben knowing a weird, skewed version of him that's easily bullyable and does whatever he wants because to Kevin it's a miracle Ben even likes that version of him. He'll take insults from Ben and Gwen and never sleep and have endless nightmares about the day they both realize what a piece of shit he is, and he knows that's the best he'll ever get.

unpopular opinion but an underrated dynamic of gwen and kevin's is in original series when gwen hates him for completely arbitrary little girl reasons like having longer hair than her (who gives a shit abt hurting ben lol) and kevin doesnt know her name. its like gwen, coping, seething: i should be the tallest girl. i should be the oldest. MY hair should be the longest. I deserve it more than him. does his mom let him have every bath and body works scent? i dont think so
kevin: who the fuck is that ginger bitch and why is she giving me the triple middle finger

the loss of the addiction angle in Kevin's character in the transition from ogs to uaf really shows to me the flaws in uaf's writing compared to ogs's, at least in terms of Kevin's redemption.
Tumblr media
Kevin's energy addiction is a key part of his character in ogs. it's implied to be why he swings so drastically from being good to Ben out of the kindness of his heart to trying to kill hundreds of people in mere hours, and it seems like this has been going on a while, shifts in mood correlating to his energy consumption. the addiction is why Ben and Kevin break apart, because Kevin's behavior because of the effects of the drug and his pursuit of it stop them from being healthy friends. Ben never stops believing Kevin might have the capacity to change, though, trying to see through the person the drug created to the person inside, like him sparing Kevin in framed and helping him out in grudge match. Kevin is, at this point in his life, dangerous, but he's still a kid, and Ben's failure to protect him weighs heavy on him for the rest of his life. you see this narrative and think well, if he's redeemed later, this should be important. recovery should be hard, especially when he seems to have been in survival mode for years. it must be hard for Ben to trust him afterwards, especially with the sheer amount of pain they've put each other through, Kevin especially, because of his addiction.
in uaf, Kevin is already good. he can still absorb things, but they don't hurt him now, they aren't a compromise he makes, sanity for safety. he's a con man, he makes measured plans and scams, not drugged out bids of random violence. he's calm, mostly, and he's a good guy now, and he'll help Ben because he has "honor", and he no longer thinks of life totally selfishly. this, I feel, is a cop out.
main characters aren't really allowed to have rough edges in uaf, and when they do, it seems jarring and out of place, or a result of weird writing. Ben's transition from being a little too kind for Ben to being unreasonably cruel in a way he never was as a child is strange, unfitting of how perfect the show wants him to seem. gwen's random bouts of insulting Kevin or pettily harping on him for things he apologized for seem strange when paired with how kind she usually is to him. and Kevin, Kevin is a "bad boy", but not in a dangerous way. all of his crimes are amorphous "things he's done" that they never elaborate on, his scams not cruel but only conniving. even when mutated, he still seems lucid, way less vengeful and violent than he was as a child. he's not an addict. why would he be? he's a good guy. he's changed. even at times where it seems obvious to show that he's "fallen off the wagon", they don't mention it.
I feel like this leads into a larger discussion about uaf, mainly about character flaws and the white sheet covering specifically the alien trio. character traits that got lost in translation, Ben's hobbies, Gwen's love of technology, Kevin's addiction metaphor. especially in terms of flaws. in uaf Ben's "flaws" fluctuate, sometimes being perfect, sometimes randomly getting an ego, losing it, then gaining it back. Gwen in uaf has no stated flaws, or at least ones that are intentional, but because of that, the ones she accidentally has are more toxic and weird than she ever did as a child. and Kevin? he's an amorphous concept. vaguely criminal. vaguely angry. a doormat. what's the issue with writing Kevin in a way where he really does feel like a homeless kid with addiction problems and enough trauma to have that dead look in his eyes forever? I don't know. I don't know where I'm going with this. give Kevin a little violence back.

why do ppl feel the need to call every skinny guy a 'femboy' even if theyre as masculine as you can get. its so weird how some ppl see a normal guy w a normal body and automatically deem him 'feminine' for i guess not being jacked enough. when ppl say ben is a femboy im like ben? ben tennyson? the guy who got so upset he screamed when he was forced to wear girl clothes? the star athlete ben tennyson? the ladies man? the guy who wears the same cargo pants every day for weeks? im not against putting a dude in a dress dont get me wrong but calling a guy feminine for just being skinny is so odd to me

Gwen Tennyson is one of my favorite characters in anything ever but there's this pervasiveness in this fandom that shes. Well. A nice, good person. And I don't really like that, especially when shes absolved of her very clear faults to the detriment of other characters. Basically all of Gwen and Kevin's relationship is Gwen doing things to Kevin that, in a normal show, she would be made to apologize for, like rushing him into a relationship when he has made it clear he is not interested at that moment, trying to make him jealous and putting their whole team in danger (which is entirely put on bens shoulders and not hers), hitting him as a punchline for a joke when all Kevin's done is make a silly comment, calling him ugly, blah blah blah you get my point I've been over this a billion times. There are other characters who get the short stick too. In the episode where Elena pretends to be Julie and puts the alien trio under the impression that she ditched nationals to hang out with ben, sure as a friend you'd be worried, but Gwen keeps saying over and over that it's not like julie, she shouldn't put a boy over herself, telling her she made a bad decision, even when julie tells her no, I've made my decision, I don't want to talk about this. Gwen does not respect anyone's boundaries even people like Kevin, Julie, and Ben, who are supposed to be her friends. But people in the fandom characterize Gwen as sweet, kind, helpful, never in the wrong ever even when she is doing something horrible. Remember when people used to say that "Gwen didn't deserve kevin" not because of the constant belittling of his interests, lack of appreciation of his boundaries (see also: those scenes in Trade Off where Kevin repeatedly takes her hand off of him and she keeps trying to touch him anyway), and general nastiness, but because Kevin, who was at the time under the impression that Gwen was getting tired of him (wonder why he'd think that what with her calling him hideous every other episode) got groomed, assaulted, and enslaved. And that's his fault I guess because he's a guy and guys can't get abused. Gwevin is so good you guys the only problem is Kevin, the guy who left his entire support system to go live with his girlfriend, the guy who carries her bags and nonstop talks about how much he lives her when she can never muster up a word to say about him besides "He's nice" and "he's changed". Gwen is always in the right because shes a girl boss character who is not allowed to have flaws besides being stuck up or whatever, and it's totally OK if she needlessly suspects everyone around her and crosses the boundaries of basically everyone she talks to. Read me this: if you think female characters should be strong, why shouldn't you acknowledge Gwen's flaws? Why is it better to have a character who's kind, sweet, motherly, badass but only in ways that won't upstage the male main character, than an awkward, horrible teenage girl who loves people so strongly she strangles them, who's overly paranoid based on her own biases, who views her friends as projects she can fix, but God she is trying so hard. God, I'm begging you, please factor this in to your Gwen fanworks, I'm so tired of her being portrayed as a good person. Shes not a good person. Shes a 16 year old girl.

(Also sorry I talked so much about gwevin its just that Gwen isn't allowed to be her own person outside of men in this show)

i think the hex thing in ov is super interesting actually from hex's pov. imagine youve been horrible for your whole life, treating everyone even your own family like pawns, and then the last remnant of your family dies (at least you think she does) and suddenly your whole worldview is shattered. what are you even fighting for now that shes gone? why did you cast her aside when she represented the thing you were supposed to protect? so you go soul searching and somewhere along the line decide to become an educator, and you make sacrifices and make good with old enemies and you actually have a concrete purpose now, after years of an immortal lifespan you finally know what you want. you even see your neice in an old enemy, and maybe by helping her, you can redeem yourself for your sins. and then your niece comes back and youre ecstatic bc you can show her how good you are now, how much youve changed. but shes long gone, and all she wants to do is hurt more and more, like the black hole you taught her to be, and you learn that the things you did in the past still happened and you still hurt the people you hurt and some of that you can never change, no matter how much you try and redeem yourself.
