I think you should start telling people you "deal in livestock" and talking/dressing like a big time cattle rancher now, but that's just what I'd do.

We're expanding into feeder mouse breeding on purpose (right now my culls from pet type breeding already go as food... mostly to Bug), so some of my gals are giving a home built rack system a trial run, to see how I feel about it.

I had considered removing the does to maternity housing, which is cozier housing where they can be alone with the babies. Maternity housing has some benefits and some drawbacks- the does spend more time with the babies, they can't argue over where the nest goes (arguing involves caring the babies back and forth between the chosen nesting sites of 2 does who disagree where all the babies go, opening more opportunity for pup injury), and it's easy to tell which doe had which babies. On the other hand, the housing is smaller, the doe can't get socialization outside her pups, and there's no postpartum breeding, so you get fewer litters out of nice does. Usually for feeder breeding, that last one is the biggest problem.

But, at least in this instance, the two does that had babies agreed on the nest and made a huge one! I thought they'd best in one of the several boxes in there but apparently none were gigantic enough to contain this doe's plan. She was also very eager to come say hello when I opened the bin, which is a good sign she's comfy.

So, it looks like it will work out! The next stage is locating a wholesaler interested in local stock, because if I can find a reliable pickup, mice and quail would become my actual job and I could stay home with the farm!
