Hoooo boy. It's finally finished. This only took me eight months to paint. T.T
Disco Elysium is soooo good y'all; I feel like I'll never give it the credit it deserves.
I'm not even sure it's finished, but I'm just going to set this down now, though.
Clip studio paint and a ton of downloaded watercolor and acrylic brushes.
Let me know if you want me to pull out any closeups or anything

Goddddd 1x07 drives me insane! The Flint/Gates breakup. The Flint/Miranda confrontation!! “They took everything from us, and then they call me a monster”. Flint starts unraveling. I never noticed before, but after Miranda says “what does it matter now”, he mouths it silently to himself in sheer astonishment. He’s seconds away from hyperventilating. How can it not matter now? When it’s the foundation of his being, when it’s how Flint was born? It’s the basis for everything and the few people remaining who he loves are losing their faith in him. But Miranda also knows the people they were died all those years ago and she’s desperately trying to revive them and find a part of that love again.
And of course: “Tell me we’re not crazy, you and I. To put ourselves through all this when the outcome is so uncertain.”

Very funny to think back on how I *hated* Vane during my first watch. Had no time for him at all. 🥲

MOST UNHINGED CHARACTER INTRODUCTIONS EVER, in one corner you’ve got John Silver unnamed man literally crashing into the narrative and kicking it all off, in the other our enigmatic Captain Flint with his first words “it’s done”, summarizing the end before we’ve even begun. I’m going insane 🙂
(silver’s first line of dialogue is “sorry”, btw. If you even care)

Ok ALSO (and then I promise I’ll shut up and dive in to the celebratory rewatch): EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE that Black Sails only has queer subtext (and let me make it clear, it absolutely is not true) that still doesn’t invalidate it as a piece of media?? The queer characters aren’t the only reason we love this show. We love this show because it’s beautiful.
It’s heart-wrenching. It dares to ask the questions “what if your civilized society isn’t all that civilized? Who does it leave behind? Whose blood is it built on? What lengths will people go to and what will they sacrifice for even the tiniest bit of agency and freedom in a world that is actively trying to kill them? Are they justified? Can you even make that judgment call?”
It’s a story about storytelling. It has narratives within narratives and foils and tragic flaws and parallels and overarching themes that begin in the very first moments in episode one and last all the way to the end. It’s a Greek tragedy put to the screen. It’s still so hopeful somehow, even when so many things fall apart. It’s the epitome of “the love may not have been enough but it’s important that it was there.” The writing is wonderful (mostly, I have a few hangups but that’s not important here), the cinematography and score is almost reverent. People who worked on this show still gush 10 years later about how it was their masterpiece.
Those headlines of “the best show nobody watched”? There’s a reason for that. Those of us who love Black Sails love it passionately, and the complex and wonderful queerness of it is only one of the reasons.

I remember when The Handmaiden (2019) came out, there was all this brouhaha about the explicit sex scenes and how they were “too much” and “uncomfortable” and “for the male gaze” and “objectifying”. I also remember how Killing Eve massively fumbled the ball because no showrunner after Phoebe could accept that these women were insanely attracted to each other and wanted to fuck. I remember the takes after Maisel ended of “why is the lifelong friendship between Susie and Midge not enough for you”.
This is why. Because people really hate to think about or watch women express desire for each other. You’ll have massive campaigns over gay male ships, but the desire between sapphic women never counts. If it’s not explicit they’re just friends. If it is explicit it’s too much and objectifying.
I don’t know what backwards puritanical strain is driving this, but here’s a couple refreshers for anyone confused:
1. Queer women exist
2. Queer women often physically desire each other!
3. Queer women who physically desire each other like to fuck each other.
4. When queer women who physically desire each other fuck each other, it looks like two women are having sex! They make noises and they come and everything!
Whatever your hang up is with queer women, put it to the back burner and keep it the fuck out of our tags maybe. 😘
