2012-13 AO3 was a beautiful fever dream.

So I know Arven’s nickname for us, ‘little buddy’, is 100% a completely platonic title he you gives you as someone who’s inherently a softy and connects with you pretty quickly as you dive into helping him with his biggest troubles.

But as a full on Arven simp and someone who’s also a very touchy feely person there’s just something so extremely affectionate about that title. Now whether you prefer the idea of a platonic or romantic relationship with him is all up to the individual, and is totally valid. But for me there’s just no denying the genuine giddiness I feel whenever he calls you that.

Perhaps it’s because he’s one of the few characters in Pokémon games to flat out call you something other than your name. Or maybe the fact that he mostly prefaces it with ‘my’ before saying it, which adds this extra layer of praise and slight possessiveness as if he was instantly attached to you at the hip. Not to mention it usually follows up after a compliment. And the feelings just grow stronger as you continue on your journey with him, getting to know his personality and motivations as he learns yours. Slowly leaning on and confiding in one another through it all.

It’s almost like he knew, like he knew he made the right choice. Sure at beginning it was because he realized you were a strong enough trainer to help him, but he started to see you were so much kinder and cooler. Your reputation proceeded you, but he got to know you personally and not many others can say that. He has so much pride in you and feels like he owes you so much, the least he can do is stick by your side being as much of a constant in your life as you are in his.

At the beginning you were his little buddy and through everything you’re still HIS little buddy. And running into him throughout the game and hearing him say that has made me physically smile more times than I’ve realized.

Was it stupid to fall in love with a god?

You got the sense that it was.

And yet there you were, in love with your best friend—or as everyone else knew him—Thor, the god of thunder.

And you'd tried to ignore your feelings, you'd tried your hardest to only see him as your friend, but it was impossible. He was always there for you, eternally joyful, and forever trying to make you smile—how could you not fall in love with him?

So, there you were, unable to tear your eyes away as he embraced Jane Foster.

There were downsides to falling in love, after all.

Especially when there was no possibility of it being requited.

But you didn't understand how you were supposed to stop. How do you stop loving the person who never failed to get a laugh out of you? The person who as soon as he got a phone, never failed to text you good morning or good night? The person who always put you before him?

How do you stop loving that person?

Watching the fondness with which he looked at Jane, though, you knew you would have to figure out a way. It was excruciating to see his love directed at someone else when all you wished was for it to be towards you. To witness his love first-hand, but never for you…well, you understood why people said that love made you weak.

Nevertheless, you had always been a persistent person. Just like every other thing you'd ever done, you would continue trying until the torment in your heart was nothing more than an aching memory.

For the moment, though, seeing Jane and Thor together was too much of an affliction on your feelings so you left.

"Hey!" Thor called out to you, your name rolling off his lips in a way that made your breath hitch. "I had thought we were going to depart to the- what was it called…the theater of movies together."

You forced a smile onto your face, hoping it didn't look as insincere at it was. "I thought you and Jane might want to go together."

"But…" Thor was perplexed. "You spoke so happily about this occasion. Do you not wish to spend this time with me?" Coming from anyone else, that question might've sounded manipulative, but from the utter confusion on his face, you could tell he was genuinely curious.

You barked out a harsh laugh, wincing the moment the raw noise left you. "It isn't that."

"What is it, then?" Thor questioned, lost as to why you were leaving after you had been so excited.

Jane looked between the two of you, seeming to understand what was happening on your end. She left, not wanting to interrupt what was probably going to become a heavy conversation.

"I'm just not feeling up to it."

His eyebrows furrowed in concern. "Are you ill? Do you need me to fetch a healer?"

"It's not that," you hated how tempted you were to just tell him. He was one of your closest companions, you didn't want to ruin that.

Your name coming out of his mouth made you look up. "You can tell me anything. I am here to listen to you."

And you knew you shouldn't, but you'd never had quite the best self-control.

"I'm in love with you," you blurted, eyes immediately going wide at your own words.

"Oh," Thor was speechless for once, making you wince. You looked down, too embarrassed to face him after what you'd just said. You missed the growing grin on his face, too absorbed in self-pity to look at him.

That is, until he wrapped his arms around you, far too ecstatic to not embrace you. "I do believe I've been in love with you since the moment I set eyes on you."
