The Villain Origin Story SMJ Deserved, But Never Got
Something I would have loved the writers to explore more within the storyline of was Shyam’s background. What caused him to become this manic obsessive psycho? Does he have trauma? Or perhaps mental illnesses? What’s his history? WHAT is his villain origin story?
We know that Shyam has 2 main objectives. Acquiring the Raizada wealth and “obtaining” Khushi. Where do these motives stem from? What triggers his greed for wealth through illicit means and his psychopath-like behavior? Perhaps an underlying mental health issue or a disturbing childhood?
The man is a stalker, a master manipulator, a liar, a cheat, is narcissistic, & unhinged. He goes to the extent of attempting the murders of his wife, two men, (handicapping one & kidnapping the other) & committing infanticide (of his own child) to achieve his means.
We see him do all of those things, and we know his motives - but what are the root causes behind those motives? SMJ is Anjali’s husband and Arnav’s brother in law, but before that, Shyam has a story. What caused him to be the way he is? Who was he before he became a villain?
I’d say Shyam is just as important as Arnav and Khushi for the plot. Given this, his motives would have felt more nuanced and realistic if some hints were given about his past and the way his brain works. The character had wasted potential for a variety of frameworks.
I know that ultimately, IPK was never about Shyam. However, as one of the most iconic and badass villains of all time, having a villain origin story would’ve been super cool. SMJ deserved it.Â
Daiyya Ho, people.
