Car explosion that killed 3 was a murder-suicide, officials say
Tumblr media
(CNN)A man killed in a car explosion over the weekend in Allentown, Pennsylvania, intentionally carried out the blast that also killed his 2-year-old son and another man, authorities said Thursday.
"All the letters indicated that Mr. Schmoyer was to blame. He took blame for it."
The explosion occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Allentown, about 60 miles north of Philadelphia, killing Schmoyer, his son, Jonathan, and David Hallman, 66, an associate of Schmoyer's, Robinson said.
Two letters "indicated that (Schmoyer) intended to target Mr. Hallman, and in one of the other letters we were able to confirm that he intended to take his son with him also."
Tumblr media
Robinson said investigators had confirmed Schmoyer and Hallman made contact in the hour before the explosion and immediately before it but did not provide further details.
A letter sent to the Allentown Police Department also specified the materials used in the construction of the device that set off the explosion.
Robinson said the "crux of the letters" revealed Schmoyer was "very unhappy with his life." He "described himself in negative terms" and admitted to other petty crimes, the agent added.
Authorities are still working to confirm the authenticity of the letters, Robinson said, but they are "very confident" they came from Schmoyer.
Explosive device was homemade
The explosives Schmoyer used were homemade, Robinson said.
Kathleen Pond, Schmoyer's grandmother, previously told CNN affiliate WFMZ that he was interested in fireworks.
Authorities on Friday did not detail what components were used in the construction of the device.
Robinson suggested the materials were not explicitly illegal, and that was the "problem" with homemade explosives.
Robinson said there were two explosives in the vehicle, but only one went off. It was likely placed in the car's center console or near it.
Asked about how Schmoyer knew how to construct the bomb, Robinson said that "unfortunately that kind of information is out there."
John Gallagher, chief of the Allentown branch of the US attorney's office, condemned the use of a bomb to carry out a suicide, especially since the area in which the explosion occurred was busy on Saturday night.
"This was an individual who intentionally set out to commit suicide, and do it in the most violent and most destructive way he could conjure up," Gallagher said.

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Rivers pose epic Florence flood risks
A member of the U.S. Coast Guard walks down Mill Creek Road checking houses after tropical storm Florence hit Newport N.C., Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018. (AP Photo/Tom Copeland)
MIAMI –  A heavy-duty response already is slogging through heavy rains and floodwaters to help people trapped or displaced by Florence's watery onslaught. Storm winds might be dropping, but rivers are rising and the next few days could bring the most destructive round of flooding in North Carolina history. Meanwhile, half a world away, Hong Kong was braced for the strongest typhoon to hit in nearly two decades.
BY THE NUMBERS
—Storm deaths: Florence is being blamed for at least 15 deaths in the Carolinas, while Typhoon Mangkhut has killed at least 66 people in the Philippines and China.
—Heavy rains: Nearly 34 inches (86 centimeters) of rain fell from Thursday through Sunday in Swansboro, on the North Carolina coast, according to the National Weather Service
—In the dark: About 740,000 outages as of Sunday morning, mostly in North Carolina
—Protected: About 15,000 people in shelters in North Carolina
—Grounded: More than 2,400 flights canceled
—Storm losses: Mayor of New Bern, North Carolina, says his city has 30 roads still unpassable, 4,200 homes and more than 300 commercial buildings damaged, 6,000 customers without power and 1,200 residents in shelters
—Evacuations: Over 2.4 million people in southern China's Guangdong province and nearly 50,000 fishing boats called back to port to escape Mangkhut.
IMAGES FROM THE GROUND
Images captured by Associated Press journalists show flooding caused by Florence in the Carolinas and Mangkhut in the Philippines .
TYPHOON MANGKHUT
Social media posts from Hong Kong show the storm shattering glass windows on commercial skyscrapers, sending sheets of paper pouring out of the buildings, fluttering and spiraling as they headed for the debris-strewn ground. In the Philippines, dozens of people, mostly miners and their families, are feared trapped by a landslide triggered by the typhoon in a mountain province.
TWO MAJOR STORMS
Florence and Mangkhut roared ashore the same day, half a world apart, but the way they spread devastation was as different as water and wind . Experts say Mangkhut may well end up being the deadlier storm, though Florence could tally a higher insured damage total.
FLORENCE FATALITIES
Among the latest storm-related deaths in South Carolina confirmed by authorities: a Carolina man who drowned when a pickup truck flipped into a drainage ditch, a couple who died of carbon monoxide poisoning running a generator indoors, a woman whose vehicle hit a tree branch and a pickup truck driver who died after the vehicle struck an overpass support beam
WILMINGTON STRANDED
Authorities are planning to airlift food and water into Wilmington, North Carolina, because storm damage cut off road access on Sunday. But while the city was inaccessible from the outside, streets in Wilmington were busy with people looking for supplies in businesses that had power.
FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES
Officials say closures could last up to a week along Interstate 95 in North Carolina. The highway could be flooded near Fayetteville and near the South Carolina state line because of expected flooding in the Cape Fear and Lumber rivers. A 16-mile (26-kilometer) stretch of I-95 near Dunn was already closed Saturday.
COAL ASH
Duke Energy says heavy rains from Florence caused a slope to collapse at a coal-ash landfill at a closed power station near the North Carolina coast. A spokeswoman says contaminated runoff — enough to fill roughly 180 dump trucks — likely flowed into the plant's cooling pond, and it was not yet clear whether any contamination may have flowed into the Cape Fear River.
NORTH CAROLINA RECOVERY
Emergency management officials and nonprofit groups aren't waiting for Florence's rains to end or floodwaters to recede before starting to help people recover from the storm. Tens of thousands of meals were being prepared to serve in the most damaged areas, and hotel rooms and other temporary housing are being located for people displaced from their homes.
OUTER BANKS
Outer Banks residents and businesses owners are reporting relatively minimal damage in the low-lying barrier islands. Though the popular North Carolina tourist destination seems to have been spared the worst of Florence's wrath, the islands still have some of the fastest rates of sea level rise in the world, nearly an inch a year.
FLOOD INSURANCE
When Florence's floodwaters recede, they may reveal gaps in flood insurance coverage . An Associated Press analysis found there are roughly 5.1 million active flood insurance policies in the U.S., and while many new policies were signed after Hurricane Harvey flooded parts of Texas and Louisiana last year, not all vulnerable homeowners are covered.
RECOVERY SUPPLIES
The government can only do so much when a storm strikes, so hardware and building supply companies get ready with batteries, gas cans, tarps and chain saws long before landfall. Home Depot and North Carolina-based Lowe's — the two biggest home supply companies — both activated sophisticated emergency command centers with their own meteorologists.
WILD HORSES
Wildlife experts say there was no need to worry about a herd of wild horses that roams North Carolina's Outer Banks. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund posted a Facebook update Saturday saying the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs were "doing their normal thing — grazing, socializing, and wondering what us crazy humans are all worked up over."

800-pound hammer stolen from California community center
Tumblr media
A photo of the 800-pound hammer stolen from the Healdsburg Community Center.
A massive 800-pound hammer was stolen from a California community center over the weekend.
Authorities in Healdsburg, about an hour north of San Francisco, said the art piece disappeared either Friday night or Saturday morning from the Healdsburg Community Center.
The problem is no witnesses have come forward and no one has seen the hammer, which is hard to miss. The wooden handle is 21 feet long and the 6-foot tall head is made of steel and other materials, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.
"We have no leads at this point. We’ve checked a lot of different locations,” said Healdsburg Police Officer Darryl Erkel. “We initially thought it might have been a high school prank.”
Investigators believe the thieves "uprooted the stand it was on and dragged it across the parking lot and probably put it on a truck using a crane,” Erkel added. “Or a group picked it up.”
Surveillance video hasn't yielded any clues.
The hammer had been on temporary loan to the Voight Family Sculpture Foundation, which sponsors putting art pieces in public spaces.
“We have for the last 12 years now put art in publicly accessible places throughout Sonoma County, 100 pieces, maybe more,” said foundation founder Judy Voigt. “This is the first time we’ve had anything like this happen.”
Healdsburg artist Doug Umkrey created the ball-peen hammer, which is worth an estimated $15,000, last year. He became inspired when he spotted a piece of metal that resembled a hammerhead.
He told the paper he wasn’t heartbroken over the theft.
“All artwork is temporary anyway,” he said. “It’s kind of amusing to me, that somebody would actually put all this energy into it — that they’d want it that much they would actually steal it ... It’s kind of nuts.”

This viral post of women getting honest about how they judge each other is a must read.
Tumblr media
Most of us, if we live long enough, learn the truth in the saying, "Don't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes."
A Reddit user asked, "What was a decision or choice you judged/didn’t understand until you went through it yourself?" and people had a heyday responding. From getting divorced, to being homeless, to staying in abusive relationships, the answers can teach us a lot about seeing other with a non-judgmental eye.
Here are a few of the karma lessons users shared:
Many people said they now understand why their parents always seemed boring, tired, or cranky.
Mousetronaut35813 wrote, "As a kid I never understood why adults complained about being too tired to do stuff, or wanting to do seemingly boring shit like watch the news and read newspapers, or just not wanting to do anything. Why not come play with us kids? I don't even have my own kids yet and I'm already doing the same stuff lol. I'm sorry I ever got upset at adults being 'too tired to play.'"
Another user, meckyborris, said they now understand why their parents always seemed so cranky. "I never understood why my parents were mostly always so irritable. But now, being on the other side, I know that bills, unexpected expenses racking up the credit card, cooking a meal that barely gets touched, repeating yourself 1,000 times, and basically everything else that has to do with being a parent and adult can really piss a person off lol."
Image via Julie Maida.
A number of people said that they understand why people let go of their ambitions and embrace mediocrity.
A comment by homeschoolpromqueen summed up what many others said about how they used to judge people who weren't striving for more than an average life, but now see that mediocrity has certain merits:
"As a teenager, I was very judgmental of the adults who were just kind of 'meh'—as in, they were basically normal, middle class, bill-paying adults, but they didn't really have much spark or ambition to them. They just went to their boring jobs, phoned it in for another day, got back in their Camry, and drove home to their crappy tract houses to watch mindless TV until bedtime.
As an adult, I get it.
At some point, we all realize that we aren't going to be astronauts, and that we've already climbed the corporate ladder as high as it's going to take us. Sure, we could uproot our entire lives and risk everything we've spent the last decade-plus working towards, but why? So we can buy a marginally nicer Camry and tract house?
There's a lot to be said for a relatively easy, comfortable life."
Screenshot via Reddit.
Another user, keakealani chimed in with the reality of what "following your passion" can look like:
"As someone who 'followed my passion' (classical singer), I get it too. I love what I do and really value the privilege of getting paid for what a lot of people see as pointless art, but every so often I fantasize about going back to school and going into a more 'practical, boring' career with stability and benefits.
It's a very tough balance. I don't think I would actually go through with it, but I totally understand why people do, and I work with many many people who sing as a hobby with a 'real job' to pay the bills, which is absolutely a valid option."
Sadly but not surprisingly, many people expressed an understanding of why people don't come forward after an assault.
The repetitive question of "Why didn't they come forward sooner?" after someone speaks out about a past assault has been answered a million times, but many who haven't experienced it still don't get it.
Reddit user CSQUITO wrote: "Not talking about harassment and sexual assault or not reporting it until it was too late... now I’m in that position. I used to never understand why people didn’t report straight away and I thought it was stupid."
Another user, rev9of8, said, "I'm male but I was physically assaulted by a manager (unprovoked, without warning and whilst I was defenceless) at work - an assault for which there was multiple witnesses.
The company not only let him get away with it, they then proceeded to engage in a campaign of bullying, threats, harassment, intimidation and smears intended to silence me and to cover-up what happened. They had me blacklisted and managed to turn everyone I knew against me.
Everything that was done to me ended up utterly destroying my mental health and left me profoundly traumatised. I fully understand why people choose not to come forward."
If you ever wonder why sexual assault victims don't come forward, just look what's happening now to those who do.
— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) October 14, 2016
Others chimed in with their own stories of assault reports being ignored,—or worse. For example, systolicfire shared: "I was 17 and was sexually assaulted at work by a coworker who was 23. I was too scared about my parents finding out so I didn’t pursue anything legally but I hoped he’d at least get fired or something after I reported it. Nope, my workplace didn’t even GIVE HIM A WRITE UP. He was still allowed to work with me. Only one of the managers kept him from me, and that manager was the one I initially reported it to within minutes of it happening. Then when I warned my other female coworkers, I was told by a manager that that would make me look bad. I definitely understood why things go unreported so often."
Sharing these kinds of questions and answers can help us be less judgmental, but also help others know they're not alone.
The whole post on Reddit is worth a read, not only to open our eyes to how many ways we might be judging unfairly, but also to show us that so many others may be going through the same thing we are. Understanding is one of the greatest gifts we can give our fellow humans. When people share stories and experiences openly, it broadens our understanding of one another and helps us all feel less alone in our struggles.

Army Base Stew for the Amerasian Soul
On existing as reminders of the trauma of U.S military occupation in Korea
Tumblr media
Youtube / Seonkyoung Longest
Budaejjigae is always served in massive pots. Kept piping hot on a Butane burner, the dish is meant to be shared with a table full of people.
With a name that translates to “military base stew,” this dish is largely made up of cheap, processed food. Korean ingredients like Neoguri ramen, kimchi and rice cakes are mixed in with seemingly contrasting American ingredients, such as Spam, hot dogs, and Kraft cheese. It’s often eaten by students and young adults in Korea as a form of inexpensive comfort food.
During U.S military occupation, “camp towns” started to form around the gates of American army and air force bases. The Koreans that lived and worked in these towns often depended on U.S soldiers for the bulk of their income, whether they were bar owners, tailors, or one of the thousands of Korean women who provided sexual services to U.S soldiers. These towns didn’t just develop on their own, either — the South Korean government, backed by the U.S, encouraged the development of camp towns and coerced Korean women to provide sexual labor for American soldiers in order to ensure their stay and improve the economy.
Some people regard budaejjigae as the original Korean-American fusion dish. Others just consider it a bad memory.
***
I grew up in Songtan, a former Korean camp town surrounding a U.S air force base. Like many other “Amerasian” children, I attended an American elementary, middle, and high school on the base along with other American military brats.
Unlike many of the white and non-Korean families who chose to live in on-base housing, my mom vehemently wanted to live in downtown Songtan. Her argument was that we wouldn’t be able to order all the yummy Korean delivery foods, like jjajangmyeon and fried chicken, if we lived on the military base.
It wasn’t until later that I realized this was an excuse. There seemed to be an unspoken acknowledgment in my family that my mom simply wouldn’t be able to assimilate into typical military spouse communities on base— the book clubs, potlucks, and church gatherings comprised mostly of Christian, American, English-speaking women (usually white, with some exceptions).
This enclave carved out of the Western, patriarchal culture of military life seemed unwelcoming to her. Instead, she removed herself almost entirely from it — and yet she still stayed within proximity, making friends with other Koreans who lived and worked in the camp town, from bar owners to street vendors to other Korean military wives.
Together, they formed their own enclave under the influence of U.S military occupation.
Every morning, my school bus would pick me up in downtown Songtan and take me to the gates of Osan Air Force Base. There, a helmet-clad soldier with a rifle would step on our bus and check all of our military ID cards that marked us as “dependents”.
Walking through the front doors of my typical American school, along with a hundred other atypical Amerasian military brats, felt like jumping from the ocean into a fish bowl. We suddenly found ourselves in a bubble, closed off from the rest of the world, but still able to see out into it.
***
In 1945, after over three decades of brutal colonial suppression, Koreans finally saw independence from the Japanese empire.
Koreans found themselves seized from Japanese colonial rule and almost immediately thrust, once again, into the control of foreign nations. Like children fighting over a room, the United States and Russia each claimed half of Korea’s territory. The north, backed by the Soviet Union, would be led by anti-imperialist communist Kim Il-sung. The south, backed by the United States, would be led by staunchly anti-communist, right-wing authoritarian Yi Seung-Man, who had succeeded in winning what many considered to be a rigged election.
The Cold War had begun, and Korea found itself, through no choice of its own, caught in the middle of it.
“The Korean peninsula would serve both as a living laboratory for technologies of domination and as a site of contestation over the United States’ fantasy of itself as a nation of saviors.”
— Grace M. Cho, Haunting the Korean Diaspora: Shame Secrecy and the Forgotten War
The magnitude of death, trauma, and destabilization that affected the Korean people during and after the Korean War is still immeasurable. Even official statistics don’t always account for the massive loss of civilian life.
During the war, the U.S-backed authoritarian leader of South Korea, Yi Seung-man, committed massacres against his citizens to suppress communists, leftists, and anyone who opposed U.S military occupation. Meanwhile, the United States launched a brutal aerial bombing campaign against North Korea that killed 20 to 30 percent of the population, an incident that has been compared to attempted genocide. Even in the South, mass killings like the No Gun-Ri Massacre left men, women, and children dead at the hands of U.S soldiers, who were instructed by officers to kill any civilians in the combat zone without discretion.
The war never really ended. In 1953, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, ensuring a ceasefire between the two countries and officially establishing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) at the 38th parallel.
***
The city of Uijeongbu, near the U.S army base Camp Casey, takes credit for the invention of budaejjigae. I often visited my friends there, where the dish is a local staple. Restaurants claiming to have served budaejjigae since the end of the Korean War lines the alleyways.
“The stew had long been the stuff of my nightmares. A stew gone wrong. A stew so laden with Spam, hot dogs, American cheese and other “food products” that it had become a perversion of Korean cuisine, indeed, a perversion of real food. Since it represented both the U.S. military occupation of Korea, and my own hidden past, I never thought I could bring myself to eat it.”
— Grace M. Cho, Eating Military Base Stew
Food scarcity, especially a shortage of meat, was a severe issue for Koreans during the war. U.S military bases, on the other hand, seemed to be overflowing with food that would end up in the garbage. The solution? U.S military bases began allowing Koreans to purchase bags of the leftover food. Sometimes hungry people would simply scavenge for it in the trash, occasionally finding inedible ingredients like cigarette butts. To this day, Koreans still joke that you can find cigarette butts in a pot of budaejjigae.
Coincidentally, the birthplace of budaejjigae is prominent for another reason that’s also related to U.S military occupation. In 2002, an armored vehicle operated by U.S military soldiers struck and killed two Korean schoolgirls while returning to base in Uijeongbu. Despite the requests of the South Korean Justice Ministry, the soldiers were tried in U.S military court, where they were found not guilty. The complete acquittal of the soldiers reignited anti-American and anti-U.S military sentiment that had been bubbling in Korea since the war.
The aptly named “military base stew” owes its very existence to the traumatic consequences of war and foreign intervention. The unlivable circumstances caused by the Korean War and prolonged U.S military occupation— massive civilian casualties, loss of infrastructure and industry, widespread famine, rises in sex trafficking and sexual violence— led to circumstances that required Koreans to survive on scraps of food left by their foreign occupiers.
Now budaejjigae is occasionally touted as a symbol — sometimes of the collision of two dynamically opposed cultures, and other times of the trauma of U.S military occupation and post-war poverty.
***
U.S military presence in South Korea continues to this day, with 28,000 to 33,000 troops still stationed on the peninsula. The former “camp towns” are now cities in their own right.
The areas surrounding U.S military bases are still heavily peppered with clubs and “G.I bars”, many of which serve as a front for brothels. Historically, the women who worked there were derisively referred to as yanggongju.
Yanggongju. Western princess. The literal translation is much kinder than the actual interpretation of the word — the most accurate equivalent would be “yankee whore.” Any Korean woman who kept the company of American soldiers could have this word hurled at them, whether they were married to one, lived with one, or served them in bars and brothels.
“She is the woman who simultaneously provokes her compatriot’s hatred because of her complicity with Korea’ s subordination, and inspires their envy because she is within arm’s reach of the American dream.”
— Grace M. Cho,
It was often the so-called yanggongju who were able to acquire the ingredients needed for budaejjigae. Many of the women would sell American food products that they received from soldiers. At one point, there was a thriving black market in South Korea for American food products. Even one of my Amerasian friends admitted to me that his mother dabbled in the market, selling American beef and Kraft cheese when they were short on money.
***
Pearl S. Buck, the author of The Good Earth, was the first to coin the term “Amerasian.” Eventually, the word became the official term used by the U.S state department to describe the children of American military service-members and Asians (usually women) in the country of their station. I have not yet encountered another term that describes this specific group of people.
Amerasians have widely differing experiences of social stigma, racism, colorism, and political and social disenfranchisement. For one, Amerasians from the Philippines have been repeatedly excluded from legislation that allows overseas Amerasians to immigrate to the United States. Not only that, but there are currently an estimated 30,000 or more “Kopinos” (children born to a Filipino mother and Korean father), the majority of whom are unable to receive assistance despite being legally entitled to child support under Korean law. In an ironically similar circumstance to the American soldiers who left Korean women with Amerasian children, Korean men indulge in relationships with Filipino women and leave without taking responsibility for their families.
Almost all of my friends from school were Amerasian, with few exceptions. We related to each other on many similar experiences — the food we ate at home, the things we did for fun off-base, the Korean and American holidays we celebrated— while simultaneously leaving so much unspoken.
None of us ever brought up or questioned the history and circumstances that led to our seemingly contradictory lives — American kids with Korean heritage, living on Korean soil, learning American history and culture that didn’t even acknowledge our existences or the intergenerational trauma we inherited.
You would have thought that it was merely a coincidence that we all happened to have Korean mothers and American fathers.
Though it occasionally felt isolating, I had a community of sorts. Unlike Amerasians who grew up in Korea with single mothers or were placed in orphanages, we were able to attend U.S Department of Defense (DOD) schools on military bases.
In other words, we had the immense privilege of assimilating into American culture— if we wanted to.
***
Since the Korean War, more than 160,000 Korean children have been sent overseas for adoption. A disproportionate number of those children are mixed-race or were born to single mothers. It was all too common for American servicemen to father biracial children with Korean women before leaving the country once their military tour ended.
As a result, these women were left to raise their children as single mothers while facing harsh social stigma. Meanwhile, the South Korean government searched for a wayto quietly remove hundreds of thousands of mixed-race children by opening up international adoption. The presence of these children were associated with Korean sex workers, camp towns, and U.S military occupation — as a result, they were considered undesirable. Many Korean mothers gave up their mixed-race children to orphanages for international adoption, believing that their children would have a better life overseas. This was especially true for Afro-Amerasians, who were less likely to pass for Korean and experienced the intersecting effects of anti-blackness and cultural stigma against mixed children.
When discussing the stigma that mixed-race children and their mothers experience in Korea, the blame is often placed on Korean culture and society for preaching a narrative of racial purity or for being historically patriarchal. While these are accurate observations, it’s important to consider the role of collective, intergenerational trauma reaching back to the Korean War and Japanese colonization. Just as the term yanggongju is fueled by generations of anger toward the United States for aiding in the loss of Korea’s autonomy and independence, so is much of the discomfort, shame, and disgust expressed toward Amerasians.
To many Koreans, Amerasians are a living reminder of the trauma caused by U.S military occupation in Korea. Amerasians exist as living proof of the existence of the yanggongju. In her book, Haunting the Korean Diaspora: Shame, Secrecy, and the Forgotten War, Cho describes the yanggongju as an unspoken, ghostly memory — a specter left over from a traumatic past that reaches back to years of foreign invasion and institutionalized sexual violence affecting Korean women.
***
“Aigoo-ya, they probably sending money to their family,” my mom would say. She was talking about other Korean women married to American servicemen, probably one of the mothers of my many Amerasian friends.
“Mimi-chan, you know I come from rich family, right?” My mom scowled. “I married your daddy because I love him. He come from poor family, you understand?”
I didn’t understand why she would tell me this. I already knew my dad was poor. He was the son of a janitor and a truck driver and grew up in rural Oklahoma. He enlisted in the military right out of high school and was stationed in Korea, where he met my mother in the camp town — likely in a “G.I. club.”
And I certainly knew my mom had been wealthy — she would never shut up about her grandma’s rice fields, even though she never saw a cent of her inheritance because she had the misfortune of being the only daughter in her family.
As a child, it seemed mean-spirited to me. Why ridicule women who are just trying to survive? I thought. Why ridicule my own family because they grew up poor?
Now I realize that she had been plagued with a complex cocktail of emotions. Resentment, anger, pride, and most of all: fear. Anger at the stigma that she had to face for marrying an American servicemen. Anger at her country’s loss of autonomy to the United States and the trauma her parents and grandparents went through. Resentment at the loss of her inheritance and the loss of her family’s support. Pride in the face of people who assumed that her family must be relying on my white American father’s money when, in fact, it was the other way around.
Fear, the immense fear, that her daughter would grow up to know the word yanggongju. That I would grow up to learn what so many people think of children like me. That I would learn to hate her and hate myself.
Some women in this position keep silent. Perhaps by leaving the past unspoken, it will simply fade, just as the Korean War faded into the Forgotten War.
Other women, like my mom, desperately want to take control of the narrative. She wanted to make sure she was the first to tell me her story, the way she saw fit.
I’m not like them, she seemed to say. I am someone. Which means you’re not like them, either.
Recently, I told my mom that I’m making arrangements to study abroad in South Korea for a semester. She’s still strongly against the idea of me returning there.
“You better not go to some G.I. club,” she yelled at me. “I don’t want to see you at some place like that! You hear me?”
The fear that I would repeat history. Girls become lovers who turn into mothers.

Mom’s 부대찌개 (Military Base Stew)
Ingredients
Jin Ramen
Kimchi
Spam (sliced long and thin)
Ground beef
Hot Dogs (chopped thin diagonally OR cut into octopus shape)
White onion
Green onion
Tofu (sliced into thin rectangles)
Dukguk (thin sliced Korean rice cakes)
Kraft American cheese slices
Gochugaru (Korean chili pepper flakes)
Gochujang (Korean chili pepper paste)
White rice
Optional: Baked beans, Mandu (Korean dumplings), Chicken broth
Directions
1. In a shallow pot, put the kimchi, ground beef, white onion, ramen noodles (with the contents of the flavor packet and vegetable packet), and about a tablespoon of gochujang at the bottom. Add the chicken broth as well if needed. (OPTIONAL: grill or pan fry the sliced hot dog)
2. Pour as much water as needed for the broth (about 2 ⅓ cups for each person being served or for each pack of ramen used).
3. Throw the sliced spam, hot dog, green onion, and tofu on top. If you’re using mandu, throw only a few on top and make sure it’s submerged in the broth. Sprinkle over with gochugaru.
4. Budaejjigae is traditionally cooked on a Butane burner or hot pot right on the table in front of your friends and family. If you don’t have a hot pot or burner, just cook it on the stove. Bring the water to a boil and then let it simmer once the noodles, dukguk, and mandu are tender and cooked.
5. While the stew is still hot, add a couple slices of Kraft American cheese on top, and baked beans if you’re using it. Serve with a bowl of white rice on the side.

‘RHOA’ Star Porsha Williams Is Pregnant! – Perez Hilton
Just a few months after introducing her beau Dennis McKinley to the world, Porsha Williams has even more exciting news to share: she’s PREGNANT!
The 37-year-old Real Housewives of Atlanta star told
But, amidst all the joy and excitement is a bit of anxiety. Williams, who suffered a miscarriage six years ago, says the fear of it happening again is still very real:
“I’ve had a miscarriage before in my past, which I’ve also been open about because I suffer with fibroids and had to have a myomectomy. So just the fear of, ‘Is the baby going to be okay? Will I make it full term?’ All those questions that you ask if you’ve had a miscarriage before.”
The Atlanta native isn’t letting those fears steal the moment she’s prayed for:
“The thought of me getting that blessing after praying for it for so long and getting that blessing with someone who is just as excited as me — it’s Dennis’ first child, just like me — and it’s something we’ve both always wanted … It’s like a dream come true.”
The reality TV star takes comfort in knowing that her equally excited boyfriend will be there for her through it all:
“I believe he’s probably shed more tears during the process than me. It’s just the sweetest moment of my life right now.”
Aww!!
While the happy couple doesn’t know the sex of their baby yet, they have started discussing names:
“One of the names that we got rid of that he liked was Napoleon. [I was like], ‘I don’t know about that one for a boy!’ One of the names that he has absolutely settled on — I’m not settled on it yet — is PJ. PJ stands for Porsha Jr. He wants to name our daughter Porsha Jr.
I’m not really sure because I think she’s going to be mad, like, ‘Really, Mom?’ And then I’m going to have to try to explain it and he’s probably going to deny that it was all his idea.”
Congratulations to the happy couple!

Hospitals ‘key’ to tackling London violence
Tumblr media

Media captionProf Jonathan Shepherd explains what makes the Cardiff Model a success
Hospital A&E departments hold the key to tackling violence in London, the man behind a pioneering project has said.
The Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention has been used in 29 London hospitals for several years after being developed in Wales's capital city.
The scheme gathers details anonymously about incidents which reveal "hotspots" such as drug dens unknown to police.
Now, the model is being rolled out fully, with a new unit set up to act on the information gathered.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the new multi-agency Violence Reduction Unit would use the shared hospital information and also focus on "early interventions" involving schools, healthcare professionals, councils and the police.
Plastic beer glasses to cut violence
London gang crime down as violence rises
Prof Jonathan Shepherd, who came up with the Cardiff Model, said this was the final step of the London roll-out, which up until now has only been gathering data.
"It's really important that this new unit addresses specific violence problems in London," said Prof Shepherd, whose model was behind the introduction of plastic pint glasses in bars and live CCTV.
"City violence prevention boards need to be able to understand and then respond to the particular challenges which information, data or intelligence reveal."
Tumblr media
What is the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention?
Tumblr media
Image copyright Getty Images
Developed in Cardiff, and launched in 1997 to fill gaps in police knowledge by anonymously gathering information at hospitals from victims of violence
Information is collected at A&Es about where people were injured, which street, school, park, or licensed premises, types of weapons used and the time and date
Information is shared with police and local authorities but not a patient's information
A violence prevention board brings police, health, local authorities and the voluntary sector together to devise an action plan to tackle issues
Tumblr media
Prof Shepherd added: "It's all very well collecting and sharing information but on its own, neither of those things is going to prevent any violence or injury at all.
"The important key thing is that the information is acted upon if it's going to make any difference.
"I think it's perhaps unfortunate that it needs a crisis like the knife crime and homicide in London to really accelerate the adoption of something like this."
Tumblr media
Prof Shepherd said London's 29 A&E departments started gathering data in line with the Cardiff Model when Boris Johnson was the mayor.
"One of the surprise findings was that there was a drug distribution point that hadn't come to the attention of police or local authorities," he said.
"But with the Cardiff Model data it was quite clear there was a new hotspot here, which turned out to be a crack house.
Is London's murder rate still higher than New York's?
Violence 'a disease infecting communities'
"When there's an injury, even a death, it's not going to be reported by them to the police because they're involved in serious illegal activity.
"But gang members go to A&E to get their injuries treated and it's an opportunity to collect information relevant to tackling gang violence and other gang activity."
Tumblr media
Prof Shepherd said the latest move will provide a step forward in reducing violence.
Mr Khan said he did not expect the Violence Reduction Unit to "deliver results overnight".
"The causes of violent crime are many years in the making and the solutions will take time. That's why our new approach is focusing over the long-term," he said.

Grenfell Tower was ‘unsafe to live in’
Tumblr media
Image copyright PA
The spread of fire inside Grenfell Tower was so horrendous that no-one should ever have been allowed to live there, a fire chief has said.
Deputy assistant commissioner Andrew O'Loughlin told the inquiry into the disaster that the failure of the building could not have been foreseen.
He was defending the decision to tell residents to remain in their homes.
People in flats not yet reached by smoke and fire should have been protected by the building, he said.
Mr O'Loughlin was the most senior London Fire Brigade Officer on the scene and was in charge of the incident when the advice to "stay put" was given to residents.
After 02:47 BST, residents were encouraged to escape if they could, rather than await rescue.
But the commissioner said that firefighters had reason to expect that the "stay put" advice would keep residents safe.
He said: "You wouldn't expect fire to spread around the building like it did on the outside. And for it to fail so catastrophically - we'd never expected or anticipated that.
"We would not expect the internal protection to fail so badly as well. So my expectation was people who were safe in their flats should stay safe in their flats."
Tumblr media
Image caption Andrew O'Loughlin said the building's safety measures failed "catastrophically"
One firefighter told the inquiry earlier that the advice for unaffected residents to stay put was redundant by about 01:50.
But Mr O'Loughlin rejected suggestions that the advice should have changed earlier, arguing that the spread of the fire was something that "none of us could ever have expected."
"The building was so horrendous several hours later that I think no-one should have lived in the building," he said.
The inquiry also heard from assistant commissioner Andrew Roe, who described what he believed were failings in the facade and the internal compartments that were meant to prevent fire spreading.
Mr Roe, who arrived on the scene at 02:29, said he was able "to look laterally through the building, I could see right through compartments and see that flame spread."
He said: "The fact the facade had kind of acted as the petrol, as it were, to spread the fire all over the building was one thing, that was obviously genuinely shocking, but it was the complete failure of the building system that caught me by surprise."
The inquiry heard that it took 25 minutes before Mr O'Loughlin was informed that the advice to residents to stay put had been abandoned at 02:47.
Mr O'Loughlin said he was confused by the change and did not think it would necessarily make much difference to residents already trapped inside their flats.
"The change to 'stay put' is, if people feel they can escape then they should try to, but I don't think it's trying to tell people they should go into a smoke-filled environment," he said.
Communicating the change to residents was also "not easily done" as there was no mechanism for contacting each flat in the west London tower block, he added.
The blaze on June 14 2017 caused the deaths of 72 residents.

Turkey’s President: Saudis should prove missing journalist left consulate
Tumblr media
Istanbul, Turkey (CNN)Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saudi Arabia should prove that missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has, in fact, left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Erdogan said the Saudi consulate should have CCTV cameras and should be able to show the video of Khashoggi leaving the building. He mentioned that there are no documents or evidence that show the journalist departing.
The Justice Ministry and the chief prosecutor in Istanbul "started an investigation and efforts are continuing," Erdogan said. Airport entrances and exits are being investigated.
"At the moment there are certain people who arrived from Saudi Arabia. And our chief investigator is investigating everything in this matter."
Turkey has asked for permission to search the consulate in Istanbul in the wake of Khashoggi's disappearance, state broadcaster TRT said. That move comes as Turkey also summoned the Saudi ambassador for a second time in recent days on Sunday, asking the diplomat for his "full cooperation" in the investigation.
These are the latest developments in Turkey's probe into the disappearance of Khashoggi, a Washington Post writer and Saudi royal court insider-turned-critic. Turkish officials told several media organizations that he had been murdered inside the consulate.
Saudi Arabia has strenuously denied any involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.
Khashoggi, who left Saudia Arabia in 2017, entered the building on Tuesday to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage while his Turkish fiancée waited outside. But she says she never saw him re-emerge.
A Saudi official said Khashoggi left the consulate shortly after he visited. The Saudis did not, however, release any surveillance footage or other evidence.
Tumblr media
The incident has thrown sharp focus on Saudi Arabia's young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's perceived crackdown on dissidents, his kingdom's delicate relationship with Turkey, and Khashoggi 's influence within the royal court.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday called Khashoggi a "friend" he had known for some time, and vowed to personally "chase" the investigation into his disappearance.
Turkish police are also examining all the consulate's entry and exit records, from the time Khashoggi entered the building until his fiancée lost contact with him.
Turkish officials: Khashoggi was killed in consulate
Four days after Khashoggi vanished, unnamed Turkish officials told the The Washington Post and Reuters that the journalist was killed inside the consulate. The officials have so far provided no evidence or details of how they arrived at this conclusion.
Yasin Aktay, a political adviser to Erdogan, told CNN on Sunday that he too believes there is a strong possibility that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate.
"I personally think the possibility of him being killed is stronger than other possibilities, although I do not want to accept it. Because if he was alive, Saudis would provide evidence that he is alive," Aktay told CNN during a telephone interview in Istanbul.
"If he is not in the consulate and if he did not leave through the normal ways, he might have left sedated or left in pieces."
Aktay, who is also an adviser to the ruling AK Party, told CNN that said the Turkish government is not "ignoring any piece of evidence," and said the Saudis are not "sharing any convincing explanations on what happened inside the building."
Tumblr media
Jamal Khashoggi's editor speaks out
Fifteen Saudi Arabian nationals -- including several officials -- arrived in Istanbul on two planes and visited the Saudi consulate there on the day Khashoggi went missing, state-run Anadolu news agency reported Saturday, citing police sources. The 15 Saudis have all since left Turkey, it added.
As demands for answers grew, Saudi officials gave journalists a tour Saturday of the six-story building in an effort to prove Khashoggi was not inside. Reuters said that a consular official showed them every room, even opening up cupboards and filing cabinets. No sign of him was found.
On Sunday, Khashoggi's family in Saudi Arabia appeared to distance themselves from media reports of his death, saying in a statement to the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya news channel: "We trust the government and the actions taken by it and all the efforts being made in the case of Jamal Khashoggi."
Who is Jamal Khashoggi?
Khashoggi, known in part for his interviews with terror mastermind Osama bin Laden, was a Saudi royal court insider before he left Saudi Arabia in 2017 for Washington. He began to contribute opinion pieces to The Washington Post that were critical of bin Salman's policies, including his consolidation of power. He was named a contributing writer at the Post in January.
Khashoggi is a Virginia resident, according to his congressman, Rep. Gerry Connolly. He had applied to be a permanent US resident, but at this time his exact residency status remains unclear.
Pressure is now mounting on the US to weigh in on the disappearance, which could have serious implications for the precarious relationship between Saudi Arabia and Turkey, already opposed over the blockade by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states against Qatar.
Two senior US administration officials told CNN on Sunday that although Washington is not commenting publicly, and has no information confirming the Turkish claims, the administration is quietly working across several agencies, seeking answers about Khashoggi's whereabouts and talking to senior Saudi officials.
Correction: This story has been updated to remove an incorrect reference to the Saudi ambassador to Turkey.

‘I can’t afford to leave my home’: evacuating too costly for some in path of Hurricane Florence
For the poorest residents of the city of Myrtle Beach, the storm is a reminder of the citys economic and racial inequality
Tumblr media
There was only one building at the Sandygate Village boarded up with plywood as the first gusts from Hurricane Florence punched through this 104-unit housing complex: the landlords office.
For many in this low-income housing community in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, about a mile from the coast and a few hundred feet from the Waccamaw river, the image spoke volumes.
They boarded up and now theyre gone, said 57-year-old resident Henry Mitchell. I thought they were supposed to do it for us too. Its crazy.
Mitchell, who is disabled and unemployed, was among the many residents here who did not evacuate due to financial concerns. Its too expensive to move out to a hotel, I could be out for days and I cant afford to leave my home behind, he said.
He has no home insurance and worried about damage Florence could wreak on his possessions, in particular the truck parked outside his unit.
The truck is the main thing. If I see that getting hit, Ill just try and get it out of here and drive away.
Tumblr media

Myrtle Beach, with its pristine shoreline, fairground attraction and immaculate golf courses, is known as a major holiday destination in the US south. But for the citys poorest residents 23% of people here live below the poverty line the prospect of a direct hit from Hurricane Florence served only as a reminder of the citys economic and racial inequality.
Not only will the housing complex probably be hit with sustained rainwater and strong winds, but both the nearby river and ocean are expected to surge and flood during the storm.
If anything happens to my home I just have to stay right where I am, said 52-year-old Angela Smith, an African American Sandygate Village resident who was also disabled and unemployed. I cant afford to own a car, so I literally cant leave.
Instead, she said, she would rely on the tight bonds she had forged with other members of the community. We all get along here. We all support each other in times like this.
Tumblr media

All the units in this complex are made of brick and subsidized by the federal government. Residents said the area had not flooded during previous storms and the US department of housing had always met the responsibility of repairing damage sustained during natural disasters.
Betty Ford, a 61-year-old retired housekeeper stood on her porch as the winds began to pick up pace.
Im feeling pretty good now, just as long as it stays like this, she said. Faith is what brings you through it. Nothing else.

Researchers are ‘astounded’ by what they found 10 years after a breakthrough study on baby talk.
Image via SupportPDX/Flickr.
If you’ve ever spent time with a toddler, you know that it can be hard to understand half—or more—of what they’re saying. But according to a new study, you should converse with them anyway.
If parents want to give their kids a jump start with language skills that will benefit them for years to come, they should be having regular conversations during those toddler months.
Researchers from the U.S. and Canada analyzed language data for children ages 2 months to 36 months, then conducted follow-up evaluations at 9 to 14 years of age.
Their study results, published in the September 2018 issue of the journal Pediatrics, show that the period of 18 to 24 months is an especially fertile time for language and literacy skills to bloom.
In fact, they found that early talk and interaction with toddlers is not only good for them in the short term, but it can improve outcomes in language skills later in childhood.
The sweet spot occurs during the second half of a child’s second year—a narrow 6-month window where greater verbal interaction seems to correlate with improved language proficiency 10 years down the road.
U.S. Air Force photo/ Staff Sgt. Taylor L. Marr.
The study found that it’s not so how much how many words adults use, but the frequency of conversation with the wee ones, that counts the most.
“Conversational turn counts”—or how often babies talked and adults talked back—during the 18 to 24 month period accounted for 14% to 27% of the difference in verbal comprehension and vocabulary later in the tween years.
While adult word counts affected outcomes as well, those differences diminished when researchers controlled for socioeconomic status. It’s the back-and-forth—taking turns listening and talking—that seems to make the difference.
Talk to your children; read to your children! | CBC News https://t.co/w6jSR13eEN
— Milly Brown 🇨🇦 (@Millybrown8) September 12, 2018
Despite the toddler years being known as a time of language explosion, the researchers were surprised by the long-term results of their study.
Study author Jill Gilkerson, senior director of research and evaluation at the LENA Foundation, said the researchers were “astounded” by the results of the study, and that finding a connection between toddler chit-chat and school-age language outcomes was “nothing short of remarkable.”
"If you knew that children who were fed a certain nutritional diet at age two were not only far healthier as toddlers, but much more likely to be in a healthy weight range at age 12, you'd want to pursue those findings, wouldn't you?" Gilkerson told CBC News. "Conversational turns are that diet, that nutrition, for the brain."
So next time a toddler starts babbling adorably about Daniel Tiger or Thomas the Tank Engine, take the time to engage them. You might just be adding to their budding genius.

The women standing up for science
Tumblr media
The female winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics has criticised a senior scientist's comments that physics was "invented and built by men" as "silly". But what do other women in science think?
Dr Donna Strickland became the first woman in 55 years to win the award shortly after the remarks by Prof Alessandro Strumia, who worked for European nuclear research centre Cern, emerged.
He has now been suspended from working with the centre.

It’s damned difficult to do great science when you’re always navigating the minefield of bias and disregard, the expectation that you must make the (psychological) tea; when asserting yourself makes you a bitch - even getting a word in without interruption can be a challenge

Getting into it: I can't remember a time when I didn't want to become a scientist. I was voted "most likely to become a scientist" in high school. I was unabashedly geeky and read lots of books. I grew up with no role models in science and was not aware of any famous female scientist. I didn't even meet a scientist until I went to university.
What are you working on? I got tired of the abstract and wanted to work on something that would make an impact. I'm now working on a cure for urinary tract infections. It's the most common reason in the UK that an antibiotic is prescribed - and the most common infection in elderly people, yet few studies have been done on it.
Currently antibiotics can't reach inside the bladder so we are using nano-technology to create little particles of antibiotics that can go inside the bladder wall. We're hoping clinical trials will start late next year, and a cure could be available quite soon afterwards.
Prof Strumia's comments: If you took them at face value, they could be quite demoralising - he is a big-shot professional. Most of what he presented has been debunked and there's been a swift universal rebuttal from the science community of his comments.
Greatest achievement: Managing to cling onto my job. Most women I know were forced to leave. There aren't that many jobs and most go to men.
Memorable moment: An elderly male professor assumed I was the research nurse when he first met me in a lift.
What I've learned: I have been in science for 30 years. I've never seen any evidence that women are not as good as men at science. It's a pervasive view but is simply not true, in my opinion.
Hope for the future: I'm just looking forward to that day when we can be accepted into the club on our own terms. I don't know if that will ever happen.

What are you working on? I work with carbon based materials for light emitting diodes. Think of the pixels in your TV screen or your mobile phone. We are looking at light, low-cost, high efficiency and flexible displays.
Prof Strumia's comments: They are really damaging to the community. Most of us realise that having diversity, having people who think differently to you, is so important to research. If you only have people who look and think the same, you will never progress.
Greatest achievement: For me, it was when I was asked to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Programme in the US. There were 48 people representing different countries, and I represented the UK.
Memorable moment: The thing is that the challenges women face in the field are less overt than a moment. There are biases when you apply for a new job, with peer reviews... and it affects non-Western scientists too. Sometimes we are facing sexism and we don't even know it.
What I've learned: There are challenges, but if we work closely together, we can overcome them.
Hope for the future: That we won't have to be excited about one women getting a Nobel Prize in physics and that it instead becomes a yearly occurrence.

What I've learned: I used to want to be seen just as a scientist but you are prejudged for being a woman before you even walk through the door. They don't mean to do it.
Hope for the future: It's very important to listen to each other. I hope we get to the place where people take this seriously.

Cardi B & Nicki Minajs Ex Meek Mill Party Together At Billboard Event In NYC! – Perez Hilton
Here’s a sight Nicki Minaj probably won’t be pleased to see.
The Barbie Dreams rapper’s rival Cardi B and her ex boyfriend Meek Mill rubbed elbows Thursday night at the Billboard 2018 R&B Hip-Hop Power Players event in New York City.
Cardi was sizzling in a lime green fur-lined coat and a light blue wig as the pair were photographed together outside the event held at at Legacy Records. During the ceremony, Meek was honored with the Impact Award — but we’re sure the duo had plenty of other topics to discuss.

Namely, Nicki, who just three weeks earlier, got into a heated altercation with Cardi during a New York Fashion Week party. As for Meek, he had dated the Anaconda performer for about two years, starting in 2015.
We’re not sure if Mizz Minaj came up during the night, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Cardi and Meek teaming up for a collab in the near future. Click HERE to see the pic and observe their energy.

Convict found in Mexico 15 years after escape
The 44-year-old man was serving a twelve year sentence for burglary.
A man was arrested in Mexico 15 years after he escaped from a Louisiana jail while serving time for a burglary, officials said Friday.
Lonnie Joseph Payne, 44, is being held in Montgomery County Jail in Conroe, Texas, and will be moved to East Feliciana Parish Prison in Louisiana possibly on Monday, The Advocate reported. Jail records showed Payne was living in Cancun, Mexico prior to his arrest.
WOMAN STOLE AMBULANCE, LED COPS ON CHASE, FOR 39TH ARREST SINCE 2013: REPORTS
Payne was in prison serving a 12-year sentence when he escaped in July 2003. The then-29-year-old inmate was trimming grass between two security fences earlier in the day and left one of the gates unlocked.
He returned to the area later, climbed the 8-foot outer fence and escaped, The Advocate reported.
It’s unclear how authorities located Payne.

Read the letter Christine Blasey Ford sent accusing Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct
Tumblr media
Washington (CNN)The following is the text of the letter Christine Blasey Ford wrote to Sen. Dianne Feinstein detailing an event in which she accuses Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. CNN was not provided a copy of the letter sent to Feinstein, but a source who had the letter read the contents of a redacted version to CNN.
CONFIDENTIAL
Senator Dianne Feinstein
Dear Senator Feinstein;
I am writing with information relevant in evaluating the current nominee to the Supreme Court.
As a constituent, I expect that you will maintain this as confidential until we have further opportunity to speak.
Brett Kavanaugh physically and sexually assaulted me during high school in the early 1980's. He conducted these acts with the assistance of REDACTED.
Both were one to two years older than me and students at a local private school.
The assault occurred in a suburban Maryland area home at a gathering that included me and four others.
Kavanaugh physically pushed me into a bedroom as I was headed for a bathroom up a short stair well from the living room. They locked the door and played loud music precluding any successful attempt to yell for help.
Kavanaugh was on top of me while laughing with REDACTED, who periodically jumped onto Kavanaugh. They both laughed as Kavanaugh tried to disrobe me in their highly inebriated state. With Kavanaugh's hand over my mouth I feared he may inadvertently kill me.
From across the room a very drunken REDACTED said mixed words to Kavanaugh ranging from "go for it" to "stop."
At one point when REDACTED jumped onto the bed the weight on me was substantial. The pile toppled, and the two scrapped with each other. After a few attempts to get away, I was able to take this opportune moment to get up and run across to a hallway bathroom. I locked the bathroom door behind me. Both loudly stumbled down the stair well at which point other persons at the house were talking with them. I exited the bathroom, ran outside of the house and went home.
I have not knowingly seen Kavanaugh since the assault. I did see REDACTED once at the REDACTED where he was extremely uncomfortable seeing me.
I have received medical treatment regarding the assault. On July 6 I notified my local government representative to ask them how to proceed with sharing this information . It is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything.
I am available to speak further should you wish to discuss. I am currently REDACTED and will be in REDACTED.
In confidence, REDACTED.
