[Hey all. I know I’ve been rather silent on this blog as of late due to a variety of reasons. But this post is to announce that this blog is being archived, and Lumi’s being moved to my new multimuse, @auraunbound so if you wanna keep up with her, you can head over there. Additionally, if we had a thread going here that you’d like to continue there, feel free to IM me over there to let me know. I’d be more than happy to dig it up.

That blog will also be where all of my old and new muses are going to show up, so if you wanna keep up with my writing in general, that’s the spot as well.]

“Hello Jaune.” Her tone was a tad befuddled at the display she just witnessed. From the fall, to the panic, to the sudden hug, something was a bit off about her brother’s behavior. Though that didn’t stop her from returning the embrace. It had been a while since her last visit after all.

“My apologies, I didn’t mean to startle you like that. I just thought to check in on the homestead on my way to my next contract. It’s been some time since I’ve had one of mother’s home cooked meals as well.” Even the most stoic heroes and travelers could feel homesick. Catching up with family was an important part of maintaining her sanity on the road for those long periods of time.

“Are you feeling well, Jaune? Is something troubling you? You seem a bit scattered.”

This was of course far from the truth. The gash carved into her plate oozed slowly with crimson. She cursed her inattention. There was no reason for her to be caught off guard like that. If not for this woman, she may very well have fallen.

She sighed in exasperation at the nickname. Dust, it had been years since she was last called that. She didn’t very much appreciate being called by her childhood nickname by this man she barely knew, but she supposed she’d let it slide for now seeing as they were to be partners for the time being.

“I apologize if my phrasing offended you, Mr. Goodfellow. I merely wished to express that I ‘had your back’, as common vernacular would have it. It would be my pleasure to accompany you.”

Her voice sounded vaguely unenthused, but that was more due to the nickname than his outburst otherwise. It happened quite often, people misunderstanding her verbiage. She didn’t understand. To protect was her job, and to assume that she thought less of those she was protecting was a ludicrous prospect to the paladin.

An outside force targeting Huntsmen was almost certainly the more likely scenario. Though all possibilities must be considered, and there were reports of new and strange Grimm appearing out in the fringes of civilized territory. It wouldn’t surprise her if it were the case.

“Well now, I would have to be a fool to turn down your invitation. I simply can’t in good conscience allow a comrade in arms to walk into the jaws of the unknown, doubly so if it could very well be a trap. Consider me your guard for this venture.”

She felt certain enough that she could trust her new partner in the field of battle. Most Huntsmen and Huntresses that had survived their first few years of the job were adept enough to at the very least hold their own. Besides, she would have conducted an investigation of her own. Being able to jump straight into a lead was never a downside.

“Guard!?” Robin starts laughing. He pulls out a pair of twin weapons, twirling them idly. One was a one-handed sickle with a large pistol embedded on the opposite end of the blade; the other was a kukri with what looked like a revolving dust chamber in the center and a secondary handle dangling from the hilt. “Listen, Lumi, I’ve been doin’ this for a while now, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got about five or six years on you at least. I said backup not supervision. Are you sayin’ I can’t be trusted to go off on my own?” His tone was teasing and light-hearted but he could almost hear a derisive jab at that comment about needing supervision. He was admittedly glad the people who would normally make those comments weren’t here right now just for the sake of not annoying him.

“Anyway, where was I?” He stowed the weapons and stood thoughtful. “Ah, right. Gotta go get my cages, then I was headin’ into my next lead. You comin’?”

A nicely tailored violet dress would accentuate your hair nicely, and would be sure to make you pop out of any crowd. Wear it with enough confidence and even those that wish to ridicule you will come to respect you.”

But there’s still no doubt that this unusual behavior warrants investigation, preferably sooner rather than later. If it turns out the creatures of Grimm are adapting, it would be best to get to the source and snuff it out as quickly as possible. I don’t like the idea of monsters leading tactical assaults on populated cities.

“Though I still believe that these missing Huntsmen are priority. Border defense aside, if the Grimm are getting smarter, I doubt they’d fall as easily to just a pair of exterminators as their primitive brethren.”

“Well it’s that or someone else is pickin’ ‘em all off.” Robin says. “Can’t really say I know who that’d be though.” Admittedly his reasons for not ruling out that possibility was that there might be a rival in that department. It was the whole reason Jade sent him out here to check it out. But this many huntsmen? This quickly? The White Fang was the only group he could think that might even come close to wanting something like this. He had no doubt they were up to something, but that something didn’t seem to have any real clues on it. Besides, wouldn’t they have taken credit for all the deaths and made a scene of it if it was them? He ruled it out for now. Grimm were always a possibility but this was still too smart for just them. It was too… complete.

Robin took a moment between thoughts to size the young woman up. She seemed capable if a bit on the stuffy side. She’d be woefully useless for anything the Arena might want, but he could make use of her for now. Besides that he was running into nothing but dead ends. “Tell you what, you look like you’ve got more than just space between your ears. I was going to check out another ‘last seen’ location. Backup can’t hurt, right?”

“See, I’d just call it good old fashioned herd thinnin’ if it weren’t for the fact that the Grimm aren’t just wanderin’ around where they should be. Packs, sure, but not that casual roamin’ you’re supposed to see. It’s weird. Maybe they’re gettin’ smarter, huh?”

“Mighty weird, ain’t it?” Robin comments casually, “Mistral ain’t that fuckin’ dangerous. They all went missin’ recently, too. I’m a bit of an expert on trackin’ things and about every goddamn lead I went through turned up bunk. I’ve seen maybe one, but they’re all skulkin’ about the city doing exactly jack shit. Haven’s cleared out, too, but as far as I’m hearin’ it’s just evacuated or some such. Still fuckin’ stupid if you ask me. Need to get my ears out there again sometime, I think.”
