I’ve been wanting to draw some stuff for a ff I’m reading for WEEKS but it’s exam season, so :,,,)
Also I’ve picked up watercolors again! My sketchbook really isn’t watercolor friendly and I’ve finished all my wc paper,, but I liked how Lanyon and Hyde came out :)
Also decided to post that BG pratice with Hyde in wc?? It’s a panel from the very first chapter (or second..?) ! I was thinking “I really wanna draw hyde rooftop hopping” and then I remembered!! He canonically does that!! So I just searched in my TGS copy for a scene like that and redrew it lol
It’s not really the same buildings, but I had fun!!
Tumblr media
When I use watercolors I tend to use them more as,,well, acrylics? I like that I can layer them to make them opaque :P

Any ways Frankenstein is 100% gonna use this as an excuse to stay instead of admitting to herself that she actually likes the lodgers and nearly completely isolating herself isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be 🙄

Hi Tumblr 👹 I’m into The Glass Scientists now.
Have a fucking ramble about the comic. I have SOOO many of these that I must share with y’all
These three panels
Tumblr media
live rent free in my head because the concept of Jekyll’s happiness being the thing that ruins him is such a good metaphor about Victorian society and that goddamn repression that was so normalised back then, also a representation of Jekyll’s mindset and emotional values.
Hyde- that far more sinister part of Jekyll’s mind- hell, even Jekyll’s own body, is physically retaliating at the thought of Jekyll being happy; at him finding peace with Lanyon because all his life, he’s been taught and had it drilled into him that people like them can’t be happy, can’t live simple domestic lives in love because they’re sinful. So the night that he makes that peace, that he gives into that love, everything has to come crashing down on him.
It’s even worse when you remember that Hyde, Mind Lanyon, the ‘changes’- they’re all emotional parts of Jekyll. At the end of the day, all the chaos that happens to Jekyll happens because of Jekyll. So the reason that it all went horribly wrong is because, deep down, Jekyll must truly think he doesn’t deserve happiness. And thus, all the trouble that follows.
Just gonna go sob.
yeah, thanks for coming to my TED talk about how this is all an elaborate representation of Jekyll’s internalised queerphobia.
Also, reminder to Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Time for me to do a deep dive analysis of the new cover
Starting with Jekyll and Hyde, Jekyll is wearing his old design clothing from paraphernalia and Hyde is dressed up in fancy clothes I've never seen him in and will most likely see Hyde in this outfit later in this chapter. I want to mention this parallel
Tumblr media
It seems like it's Jekyll's turn to take Hyde down with him. And I want to point out Hydes expression, he's scared, shocked, and even worried while Jekyll just smiles at him with his hair covering his eyes. We don't know if Jekyll's eye are angry, scared, or even crying and it doesn't matter because no matter what he is feeling, it's safe to say Jekyll is not okay.
Now the background. There is an obvious lighthouse in the water but I was unable to see if this lighthouse was based off of a real place or not. The cliffs behind Hyde has cracks in it but on Jekyll's side it's just a bunch of water which brings me to my theory: The place Jekyll and Hyde are in is a memory in the mindscape. Maybe a place from their childhood or teenage years which explains why Jekyll is wearing his old clothing. Jekyll's mind has already been breaking apart as said by Hyde in the previous chapter, but now Hydes mind is beginning to crack and fall apart which mirrors their lack of control over their transformations that has been happening in the real world.
What I think will happen is that after they transform in front of Frankenstein, Jekyll will sort of snap. Not in an angry way but in an "well it's over now" sort of mentality. Because now that Frankenstein knows he is Hyde, Jekyll lost the last thing he had in his eyes. His reputation. Sure, Frankenstein never respected Jekyll and saw right through him but to Jekyll that didn't matter because Frankenstein never got the full story but now she does. And with her knowing comes the threat of her telling other people which will destroy his reputation. It's over for Jekyll and it's all Hyde's fault. If Hyde hadn't transformed right in front of Frankenstein, nothing would be lost. So now that Jekyll has lost everything, he will make sure Hyde loses everything just as well. Jekyll is going to take Hyde down with him.

IM GONNA BE SO NORMAL RN
Okay so We Both Go Down Together is one of those songs where it sounds really sweet, but once you look at the lyrics it’s really fucked up
TW: non-con/rape, suicide, questionably murder?
Essentially, the plot of the song (because most Decembrist songs have plots and it’s fucking amazing) is one of a very dominant and manipulative lover from upper class who fell in ‘love’ with a woman from a rough childhood and lower class [You come from parents wanton/A childhood rough & rotten/I come from wealth & beauty/Untouched by work or duty]
They have less than consensual encounters, with the narrator rather clearly taking advantage of his ‘lover’ and raping her in an idyllic place [I laid you down on the grass of a clearing/You wept, but your soul was willing]
In the end, he convinces her to commit suicide with(?) him because “My parents will never consent to this love”
They meet on the “cliffs of Dover” and presumably jump together [While the seagulls are crying/We fall, but our souls are flying] (but it is a question of if the narrator followed through or if this was just a ploy to kill her)
So that’s the song, which leaves HORRIFYING implications for TGS I think!
In my opinion, based on the cover, Jekyll would be taking the place as the narrator, as he also comes from upper class, blah blah blah whatever and then Hyde would be the woman from the lower class bc that’s what he pretends to be
While I HEAVILY doubt the implication that Jekyll and Hyde would be romantic, especially in the direction of the song, but the overall message of ‘going down together’ still remains
There’s the possibility that Jekyll commits ‘suicide’ with Hyde, or that Jekyll simply pushes Hyde off the cliff and kills him (cliffs also likely make a connection to the cliffs of insanity, as Jekyll/Hyde and Frankenstein have to like scale cliffs in that I believe)
Essentially it would be Jekyll either somehow managing to blame Hyde for everything and not taking the potion presumably (killing him) or Jekyll AND Hyde becoming unhinged, probably being more like themselves in the actual J&H novella (suicide pact)
It’s all just making me think too much and I’m going to explode I fucking love the Decemberists pls go listen to We Both Go Down Together it’s only like 3 mins long and fucking BEAUTIFUL
