Despite the stranger's reassurances, Reina's posture remained defensive. Granted, there was little for her to do save brandish her poor lyre, and it did little to make her appear threatening. But the alternative seemed far too risky.
What kind of innocent person followed another through darkened streets, waited until they were at their most defenseless, and even then only approached when confronted?
One with far too much... enthusiasm, it appeared. Reina blinked, her expression blank for a mere moment. Words poured from the man's mouth. An explanation. Or two, or three explanations. And then an introduction. One that was all too genuine.
Who on earth was this person? With his slightly disarming smile and naive honesty? Reina almost wanted to laugh. Was it from relief? Or at his simple earnest, endearing speech? Hmm. He was dangerous. Those who poured their heart out often were.
Opening her mouth to reply, Reina paused for one more second. That glint on his arm... dragon scales? How interesting. Her lips curved into a smile and she inclined her head.
"Is this how you show appreciation to all the performers you wish to tip?" she quipped, then lowered herself to pick up the broken instrument at her feet, never taking her eyes off his. "Perhaps announcing yourself earlier rather than lurking in the shadows might serve you better in the future."
Her smile remained, aimed to ease any sting from her words. "It's nice to meet you, Joon," Despite the circumstances. "I suppose I didn't allow time to introduce myself following my performance. Though I'd much rather you didn't associate my name with... well, that." She wrinkled her nose in distaste.
"My name is Reina," she continued, dropping into an appreciative bow, "I don't tend to perform in taverns that much these days. So you can at least claim to have seen a rare performance. Even rarer that it should be cut short."
As a moment hush fell, the musician allowed her eyes to fall to the scales on Joon's wrist, so obviously, and proudly, displayed. "Do you tell most people you meet your heritage?" she asked quietly as the smallest shiver born of the cool night air ran across her skin. She gestured at his arm to cover the reaction. "They're quite beautiful."
"whoa! whoa-- no one is taking advantage here."
joon puts his hands up in surrender, showing he comes in peace. his arms shimmer in the moonlight, his blue scales glittering iridescently as the cool light rakes over them. his simple mage robes sway in the breeze, his quarterstaff strapped to his back with his travelling pack, and his hair is swooped aside so his piercing eyes can take in the full image before him.
in truth, he had followed her.
but! he didn't have ill intent. he had just finished up a quest and turned in his spoils to the guild, only retaining the draconic artifacts he had found for his own personal studies. he had chosen to celebrate his finds at a tavern with some friends, slamming back a few drinks and enjoying the pleasant music of the local bard playing. that is, until she scurried off, and he had been curious as to why. as he made his approach he had noticed the broken string swaying in the late evening wind, but he wasn't exactly stealthy and had been discovered before he could even announce himself.
well, this was awkward.
"apologies! i mean no harm, truly. i just, uh..." he straightens up, scratching at the back of his head sheepishly. "i heard you playing earlier and wanted to tip you but you had left before i could even approach you. so i followed you. which i'm now realizing is pretty creepy, but i really just wanted to compliment you! honest!"
he sighs at himself, slapping a hand against his face in a face palm and wrinkling his brow in frustration. "i'm an idiot. okay," he gestures out with both hands now, attempting a smile, "lets start over, yeah? i'm joon, i'm an adventurer, and i make potions. i collect draconic lore, mostly about blue dragons cause--" he swings back and forth, showing off the patches of scales on his face and arms, "i kind of descend from them, which lets me cast magic. i'm also not very bright. sorry. okay! now..." he bows slightly and gestures his hand towards her, indicating it's now her turn to introduce herself.

˖♪ও — Under Starless Skies
{ Open Starter }
The night brought a softer soundscape than the day. Less frenzied footsteps, fewer voices battling to be heard, a quieter rhythm. The calm it carried washed over Reina with the lapping over the waves. Hush.... Hush...
Reina sighed into the sound, pulling the flimsy shawl tighter around her shoulders. It was becoming increasingly apparent that she should have draped something a little warmer around her shoulders before leaving the tavern, but there was naught to be done about it now. She couldn't exactly go back there. Not after that performance. If it could even be called so.
The lyre sat at her feet, a guilty reminder that Reina's eyes kept wandering to. It was almost taunting her, the cursed thing.
"All the care I offer you and this is how you repay me?" she muttered fiercely, then made the smallest motion as if to give it a kick. The image of the poor thing, sitting helplessly with its single broken string, subjected to more damage, flashed through her mind. Gods. Now she felt even more guilt.
Crouching down so that she was covering the humbled instrument, Reina closed her eyes. A broken string was just that - broken, yet fixable. She had finished the performance calmly, then excused herself and fled. What a coward. Another mistake like that and the cracks could begin to show. And they mustn't. She could not allow it.
The sound of muffled footsteps behind her proved exactly this. Her eyes snapped open, though she kept unfailingly still. Was it a tavern patron, come to question or solicit her? Or something else. The night held not only calm. It held its own secrets too, as did its more favoured denizens.
"I'll have you know that I am armed," Reina said into the quiet. Granted, her only weapon was a blunt instrument, but there had been times when she'd had less to work with. Yet here she was to tell the tale. "And I do not appreciate those who take advantage of someone when their back is turned."

⸺ ✧˖° Introducing AKANE REINA, an alluring HUMAN with a fondness for music and collecting old tomes. Their admirers endlessly praise them for their skills as an enigmatic BARD & their work as a COURT ENTERTAINER. On the contrary; their rivals will warn you of their tendency to be reticent and shrewd.

[ Hi everyone, Reina-mun here, also known as Keeley! I'm so excited to get writing with you all and to fall in love with all of your muses! A tiny warning before we begin - due to where I live, I'm likely to be asleep when you're awake, and vice versa. But please don't ever let that stop you from coming to plot with me ^^ There are still a few areas of my blog that need finishing up, so please bear with me until those are complete. Also, I have to admit that it has been a while since I've roleplayed regularly. Because of this, I apologise if my skills are rather rusty, or if I make any mistakes and show my age. I'm certainly not up to date with all the latest rp styles and gorgeous edits, but I'll try to keep up with you all.
Reina is my first muse in many years. She wandered into my head confident, somewhat flirtatious, and wholly determined to rise in renown through the courts of Jeosung. Although something tells me she is less confident than she tries to appear... I will update her history in the days to come to offer you all more insight into where her path has taken her so far, and where it might lead her from here on.
Please feel free to hop into my messages at any time! I will be sure to respond to them, and any replies, as quickly as my real life allows. Which might be incredibly slowly from time to time, but I swear I'll try my best! I have both discord and kkt to mitigate some of that slowness in messages. Don't hesitate to ask me for the details if you'd like to talk more on either~
I suppose the last thing I need to say is that I'm only loosely familiar with the world of dnd (and if I'm perfectly honest, most of what I do know is from Baldur's Gate 3 xD). So if you ever have any notes for me and tips on how to make Reina more accurate as a bard, or if there are any cool spells I should know, please tell me! I want to dive into this character as deeply as I can and you're all a part of her story now too.
So, without further ado... let the tales be told~ ]
