Scratching his head, he gives Joey a pensive look as the tries not to look too interested in her last statement. Sure, he'd rather do an intriguing story on the mundane side of things but nosiness is his middle name and he is oh, so deathly curious about the affair. "Wait, is that even out in the open?"

"just how crazy are we talking about here?" jo inquired, going through their phone for the third time in the last two minutes before shoving the electronic device on their pocket before turning their attention to the other, an almost challenging look on their face. "new york 'mom used my trust fund to pay for a top lawyer so she wouldn't get thrown into jail for embezzlement' or rhode island 'neighbor stole my pet and dyed it a weird ass color'?" the brunette inquired, arching a brow.

"also— on or off the record? 'cause i could tell you about my boss' affair and how his wife caught him and went ballistic, ended up seducing his mistress and marrying her but y'know, I don't hate my job and the two of them make a cute couple."

He looks at to where she is pointing again then turns back. He doesn't see anything out of the ordinary beyond the lone seagull skipping about on the sand--maybe a bunch of seaweed getting washed up onto the shore, but certainly not a rainbow parrot lady. It is in that moment a lightbulb lit above his head and he realized his friend may have indulged herself to some of her stronger fun snacks. "I see." Pursing his lips, he considered being honest about it, but decided to let her have a little fun--but just a little.

"I'll have you know it was a nice day to go for a walk, touch grass while I'm at it. Or sand." He waves his phone and shows her a picture of a bunch of small crabs resting on a rock in a tidepool. "Check out these cool crabs though. I saw them in the tidepool nearby."

     “  what  do  you  mean  what  ?  the  guy  with  the  rainbow  parrot  lady  and  the  trampin’  a  french  fry  !  ”  iris  extended  her  arm  out,  finger  pointing  in  the  general  direction  though  her  eyes  hadn’t  yet  moved  back  to  focus  on  the  former  object  of  attention.  it  wasn’t  until  nathan’s  eyes  moved  had  hers  finally  followed,  “  they’re  right  —“  and  just  like  that,  silence.  nothing  but  the  waves  and  a  seagull  landing  on  the  sand,  scrounging  for  lunch,  one  could  only  assume.  “  well,  i  mean,  they  were  right  there.  ”  instead  of  accepting  defeat,  iris  decided  to  flip  the  script  instead.  “  y’know,  you  would’ve  seen  it  had  you  put  your  phone  down  for  two  seconds.  ”  rich  coming  from  her  of  all  people,  “  is  my  company  not  enough  for  you  ?  ”  a  dramatic  lilt  in  her  tone  as  she  exhaled  a  sigh.  “  what’re  you  doin’  anyways  ?  scoping  out  what  ‘hot  singles’  are  in  your  area  ?  ”  she  teased,  brows  raising  ever  so  slightly  as  she  tossed  a  fry  out  towards  the  helpless  bird.

Truth be told he has been interested in seeing the carnival for a while now, but his workload has been so insane in the last week he hasn't gotten the chance to take a proper time off where he is not doing anything. In fact, now that Max has mentioned it, this is a good time to do so.

"Sure thing! I've been meaning to check it out anyway. I've heard they've got some new stuff this year."

Maybe it was just a typical day at the pier, but Max would never get tired of them no matter how long he lived in Oceanview. His shoulders hunched over the railing as they stared out onto the ocean, but he straightened up again as he pulled away to look down at the hubbub. The twinkling lights and tinny songs of the arcade and carnival called out to him, and he nudged his companion with his elbow. “Wanna check out the games?”

"Scandalous?!" Hold on, hold on, hold on! "Okay maybe not anything that crazy." Surely creating something on purpose defeats, well, the whole purpose of his assignment? If it's so recent? Or something. Although, upon hearing her suggestion, the more he thinks about it, the more he finds the idea of stirring up something interesting about Oceanview's haunted hotel over the hill some twenty miles out. He does recall skimming over a decade-old article about it just a few pages ago.

"The most haunted place doesn't sound so bad," he says, "Do you know anything about the old hotel up the hill?"

"Does anything crazy actually happen in this town? Like at all?" Poor little Nathan has been stuck in this rut with an investigative assignment his boss oh, so generously gave him last week, and his deadline is fast approaching.

"I feel like ever since I've moved here, nothing groundbreaking or scandalous has ever happened!" He sighs and scratches his head, peeling his eyes away from the 58th page on Google about Oceanview's history and to the person standing next to him. "I don't think my workplace has reported anything out of the ordinary either. We don't get busy outside of city-wide events."

Having not paid any attention since arriving at the beach with her--his work phone was ringing non-stop on his day off of all days--Nathan simply looks at her, blinking owlishly as his gaze moved from her to the empty space a few feet away from her, and back to her.

"See what? Sorry I wasn't paying attention."

      having  a  hacking  hustle  had  its  perks  …  sure,  she  was  milking  people  dry  for  things  that  could’ve  easily  been  done  using  a  simple  google  search;  but  hey,  money  was  money.  but  sometimes  it  wasn’t  even  money  she  worked  for,  sometimes  customers  paid  her  in  different  ways    —  free  oil  changes,  tickets  to  concerts,  you  name  it.  yet  nothing  beat  the  payment  that  left  her  with  pupils  the  size  of  saucers  and  a  hunger  that  could  only  be  satiated  by  a  greasy  order  of  french  fries,  would  probably  even  go  as  far  as  deeming  it  her  favorite.  it  was  evident  that  she’d  dipped  into  her  stash  …  two  ‘special’  sour  gummy  worms  later  and  the  effects  were  slowly  starting  to  kick  in;  but  it  wasn’t  until  she’d  cast  her  gaze  over  to  glance  just  a  few  feet  away  that  she  realized  she  might’ve  overindulged.  the  shoestring  fry  hung  from  her  mouth,  jaw  slightly  agape,  as  she  tried  to  make  out  the  sight.  “  …  you’re  seeing  this  too,  right  ?  i’m  not  just  hallucinating  ?  ”  she  finally  tore  her  eyes  away  to  glance  at  the  other,  hesitant  to  look  back  in  fear  that  the  latter  held  some  truth.
