hi hsmtmts fans lets chat about seb real quick :D

im sure most people have heard the term "infantilizing" before and while i absolutely hate being that person to call out the fandom (and more twitter/instagram than tumblr) we do need to make sure we arent infantilizing any characters in the show

personally i think some of the "no thoughts head empty" jokes are funny but once you stray into the area of of people saying things like "seb you poor baby" that is. literally infantilizing at its definition

(meanwhile we all know seb is capable of many many thing. homeboy can literally drive a tractor)

and part of it honestly is at fault to the hsmtmts writing this season (and i could go on a whole rant about how they saw that sebs one liners were a crowd favorite last season and therefore took away everything but that this season which effectively ruins that bit). the characters themselves have a tendency to either shut him down or patronize him

however, the fandom should not also encourage that behavior. im hoping that they do end up addressing that as part of his arc for the end of the season but you never know with this show. nevertheless, they are fake characters while we are all real people so please, please dont treat him the same way they do, nor defending him to the point of acting like he is no longer a human being despite being a tv show character

the issue that comes up with infantilizing seb is two things

one, hes an open gay character and we see infantilizing in this way with. basically EVERY fandom. again, partly thanks (derogatory) to the hsmtmts writers for that one for having carlos's sweet little "honey"s seem more patronizing than pet names in some situations (i say with heavy heart as a very big seblos fan)

but literally this always happens where one member of the relationship is portrayed as stronger and more intelligent and then you get weird dynamics and its just messy and we dont want that (especially with j&f being in an irl relationship people start to blur the lines with their characters and them but again, another post)

the second issue and this is less of an issue and more of just a Thing but. characters like seb and big red if you havent noticed are highly hcd to be neurodivergent by nd people who see traits of their neurodivergency in their characters (people like me, for example)

obviously not saying that seb IS neurodivergent or that his traits are exclusively nd, but seeing such a large group of people closely relate to traits in a character that then get infantilized? not,,, great. so please just be careful with that one when it does come to people who are legitimately neurodivergent!

tldr; be careful with how you defend seb within the show so that youre not infantilizing him, because we shouldnt be supporting the way he is treated which will hopefully get addressed later in the season, but as an openly gay character as well as a character who is highly hcd as neurodivergent we dont want to defend him to the point at which he is no longer a human character!

i have a lot to say about the culture surrounding coming out and how much i hate it but it basically all boils down to how coming out is framed as necessary and something you just do as soon as it’s “safe” when you’re really not obligated to come out at all. like you literally don’t have to. even if it is relatively safe you do not have to put yourself through a potentially traumatic experience because you think it’s part of the lgbt experience or a right of passage or whatever. you don’t have to. that is an option.

Honestly at this point if they just decide to go fuck it and drop s2 with the cast looking exactly as they do right now, I would respect it so much. i know tumblr doesn’t give a SHIT when things happen in countries outside the “most popular ones” (such as the usa & england). it’s true, don’t lie to me. y’all don’t give A FUCK. not every issue and problem in said countries gets the appropriate exposure but in general shit shows up on the news WORLD FREAKING  WIDE. you set up donations, you help out, your spread the word, you say “pray for x”……

people are losing EVERYTHING they own.

i have a friend that is on a train right now passing through places that have been burnt to the ground and she says the smoke is so intense it’s getting inside the train and she can barely breathe.

and yet, even though several people (myself included) have been trying to bring awareness to what has been happening in southern europe… what we get from most of you, those not part of the countries suffering, is silence. we don’t ask for money, we don’t ask for shit other than a reblog to spread awareness… something you can delete in 24/48hrs if you wish. 

i don’t know what to tell you. i’m angry. i’m frustrated. i’m disappointed. i feel like i’m screaming into the void. “a reblog does nothing” - you know that’s a damn lie, you know exposure always helps, you know people start paying attention when posts on social media become popular. my country in particular is a small one, we get ZERO exposure. y’all are only starting to figure out we even fucking exist bc of the shit we’ve been winning lately. 

but hell, if the EU doesn’t give a shit, why should some user on tumblr dot com?

a) an intentional marketing scheme to stir interest in the project and attract certain fanbases (lgbtq people and young women) vs. 

b) members of the creative team genuinely wanting to write queer characters but the corporate side of things force them to tone it down but they still leave little hints vs. 

c) they legitimately did not know how gay something would come across

In short Julie is canonically a genius. Does this mean she has life smarts? Not necessarily. But she’s still a genius. No wonder Luke is in love with her.

Can I just rant about how Monyca is such a good character. She is such a good girlfriend to Bobby, and goes to his tennis games to support him. She also really nice to the his family, like when she signs Elena’s petition. She is also not afraid to call out Bobby when he’s being a bad boyfriend at the dance. And she is totally chill and understandable when Bobby breaks up with her.
