Printing old negatives with the mighty Omega D-II enlarger: shot in summer 2018 on North Sea island Föhr on one of the few good weather days (biggest problem was Wind the arch enemy of every LF photographer)… starting with a shot printing on ilford Multigrade IV RC paper to get a feel, then cropping for effect and printing on Multigrade Fb Classic (first image, RC is second image), last shows the finished print of another negative again cropped for effect, printed on Multigrade IV RC deluxe. Images still need to be toned. More working prints in my story. And the saga of the mighty Omega D-II enlarger continues: the diffuser material I used had some flaws, Knick’s and scratches… which showed up on my prints. So I went another direction: using thinner diffuser material but three sheets. And it works. Reduction by about four stops, diffusion even hid the flaws on the back of my test negative. The tale of the mighty Omega D-II enlarger continued: with the 150W bulb getting extremely short and unmanageable exposure times I experimented with artist’s drawing sheet as diffusor material (put between the condenser lenses for lack of a round Glas to put on top and thus reducing output by about three stops. Might help with unclean negatives and so getting best of both worlds. My SP-445 tank often leaves residue on the Film back, which did show up on my recent test prints. Might get me 75W bulbs but for now that might be a working solution. First darkroom session with the mighty Omega D-II condenser enlarger. The light output is almost frightening: f=22 meant printing with base time of 2 seconds for 18x24 (Ilford Multigrade IV RC) so overall an exposure of 5.2 seconds… might need to add some means of diffuser or ND filter to tone down things… would make any dodging or burning tricky indeed. Straight manual Splitgrade print from negative: @ilfordphoto FP4plus @50 (N-1) (Xtol 1+1). Justus cooked corner to correct. Omega D-II enlarger restoration: masking attachment disassembled , cleaned and lubricated (with Ballistol). Nice sturdy and simple construction. Omega D-II enlarger continued: now with a masking attachment for under the condenser. A bit corroded - in fact the locking nut was frozen and will still need a lot of work - and needs a disassembly and a thorough cleaning and lubrication. Effekt can be seen on the easel and would facilitate using different formats. Will make sense with new LED multigrade head currently in the planning stage. Dry workplace cleaned up and ready to go (not showing the mess on the wet side…) red tint is from safe light on in background… the contraption on the right corner is for reducing dust on film, (small) light table, light to check for dust.
