if nothing else i’m glad that the tv adaption brought about the mass headcanon that crowley is raphael and thus is a fallen archangel because that’s SO fucking galaxy brained i don’t know what to do with myself

the juxtaposition of michael sheen’s portrayal of aziraphale, where all his best details, his best expressions, are centered in his eyes - the flitting glances up and down crowley’s body in paris, the lingering gazes on crowley’s mouth throughout the wall scene, the softness and kindness in his eyes when he deals with mary hodges and adam young both, the intensity of his eyes when he looks at gabriel in that last trial scene (that’s crowley, but it’s him being aziraphale, and it’s still michael sheen underneath lol), the way his gaze flicks to crowley when he says “luck of the devil” and crowley double takes at him, the pain in his eyes when crowley leaves the bandstand - aziraphale holds himself quite stiff, very often holds his hands in front of him, bound together, and while he does have various big expressions like the gasp in 1941 or the gavotte smile, michael sheen’s portrayal places aziraphale’s soul in his eyes - we see more of the hidden pieces of aziraphale through his eyes, the things he’d probably rather we didn’t
juxtapose that against david tennant’s portrayal of crowley, which relies on so much outside his eyes - his movement of his mouth and forehead and eyebrows become dramatic, the baring of teeth, the raising of his brow, and then of course his entire body comes into the picture, that distinctive walk we’ve all yelled so much about. when we do see crowley’s eyes they’re so open and vulnerable - in many cases dramatically enlarged, even - much like the rest of his expressions. david tennant’s portrayal of crowley is a portrayal that can’t help but give itself away, despite not seeing his eyes - the crumbling face in the bar scene, the devastation at the bandstand and on the soho street, almost shocked, the soft smiles on the bench and in the ritz, you know the ones, and the one, very bright, very big smile after the paintball scene. david tennant’s portrayal gives you everything everywhere else because he so often can’t give you the eyes, or he can’t give aziraphale the eyes - we see more of crowley’s eyes when he’s alone than any other time - so the soul of crowley is lodged everywhere else. you don’t need the eyes to know him.
it’s a very cleverly done juxtaposition and really reinforces, actually, how together these two characters are meant to be, that, as michael said in an interview, they really don’t exist without one another. they fill in the spaces the other has left empty literally. it’s very cool and very fascinating to watch and very chef’s kiss.

I bet there’s a lot of one star Yelp reviews “A.Z. Fell and Co. Bookshop,” like:
“Is this store ever actually open?”
“By some miracle the store was open when I went in. It smells really bad? I don’t know why. Incredibly dusty and disorganized. Could not find any staff member when I wanted to buy a book. Ended up giving up and going home.”
“Unparalleled collection but awful, awful staff. Tried to purchase a 16th century book of prophecy I’ve been trying to get my hands on for years. Shopkeeper treated me like I was trying to steal it and then refused to let me purchase it, while casting some very nasty aspirations on my character based on how I handled the spines of early modern volumes when taking them off of a shelf. Will NOT be coming back.”
“Went in to browse. Two very odd men in suits came in and loudly discussed needing to buy pornography. The shopkeeper took them to the backroom and then after the two men left (without a book, mind you), the owner kicked us out and closed. I think this bookshop is a front for the mafia.”
“There is a large snake roaming around the store.”
A large snake roaming around the store 😂
#but aziraphale would be really popular with students????  #the other half of the reviews are all stories about they had to find this book for their paper and none of the libraries had it   #but they’ve heard about his bookshop from a friend so they decided to go in  #and surprise! it was there but like suspiciously expensive   #(aziraphale either has no sense of how much a book should cost or he’s doing it on purpose. you decide)   #so they decided to call it a day and leave all sad and certain they’re f—ed  #but before they could go the shipowner stopped them for a chat and they told him how they needed the book but could not afford it   #and they 100% expected him to go oh well good day but he got this fond look and lead them to the other part of the store   #to a desk that most definitely wasn’t there before and told them that if they promise to be careful they could work on the paper here   #he doesn’t mind    #and so they would spend a week just quietly working on the paper minding their business    #and if he sometimes forgot they were there and went out for lunch they always made sure not to leave before he returned    #sometimes he got back alone sometimes with a ‘friend’ who never said anything when the guy apologized for leaving them on their own    #he just stood there leaning against a bookshelf probably trying to look all menacingly   #but the way his eyes followed the shopowner every move betrayed him   #when the week was done they all knew the store owner’s fondness for food quite well and decided to thank him with a cake   #they have never seen anybody light up so much and they decided they now understood the mysterious guy’s heart eyes as well (via @thorrential)
