I said this in a tiktok comment, but the whole watcher situation is even more absurd when you realize that they’ve been leaving a buttload of money on the table by not fully capitalizing off the professor! Stickers! Pins! Posters! Trading cards! Coloring books! Fuck, you could slap a picture of him on a fucking toaster and that thing would sell out within the day! Use Amazon’s self-publish service to put out a book of his most iconic quotes! Release a cd of all his songs! Pull a randy Feltface and release a comedy special of him doing jokes and bits that are history-themed! You have the perfect mascot, with tons of avenues for revenue, but noooooo you’d rather spend money you don’t have creating a brand new subscription service during everyone’s “I hate subscription services” era what is WRONG with you guys?!?!!!?!?

My favorite funny moment that came out of the Watcher streaming announcement was people asking Miles (from the Try Guys) about the Watcher streaming service while he was live on YouTube and as he was about to speak a whiteboard fell directly onto his face and he took it as a sign from the universe not to speak

“oh its all about paying artists until you have to foot the bill” actually it’s more about doing zero market research and jumping to an almost exclusively behind-a-paywall method of content creation. if they had announced that they were doing new series’ with a platform like nebula, that they would be doing kickstarters to fund shows a-la starkid, or that they would be adopting a world of wonder model where they release content 1-2 months early for paying subscribers (but it still eventually is posted for free), i don’t think the backlash would be this severe.

of course creatives deserve to be fairly compensated, and i empathize (as a creative working two jobs to make ends meet) with El Capitalismo ruining everything. but instead of figuring out what their audience wants and trying to prioritize that, they keep trying to ball on a buzzfeed budget despite the fact that leaving buzzfeed for creative freedom means giving up some of the luxuries (cough cough Steven Lim’s Fucking Gold Leaf).

tldr i sympathize deeply with watcher not wanting to lay off employees or sacrifice the “tv level quality” they’ve been trying to uphold. however. they never stopped to consider that most of their fanbase fell in love with their content when they made most of their videos in a basement at buzzfeed with a static camera, and don’t want to (or straight up can’t) foot the bill for expenses that they don’t even really care about.

genuinely cannot imagine dickriding the watcher guys the way some of you have been. like they made a bad business decision! they alienated their audience! they made jokes about "eating the rich" and then one of their owners turned around and bought a tesla! they said they'd pull all their old content off youtube and then immediately backpedaled and started gaslighting the people who noticed it! they're just guys on the internet, they're not your friends and they are not anti-capitalists. they just want money and they don't care about their primarily young/international/non-wealthy audience.
