15 Wardrobe Essentials That Are Better for the Earth
Eco-Friendly Clothing
How often do you think about where your clothes were made, how many eco friendly clothing materials are used or how long they’ll last after washing them for the first time? These days, fast fashion reigns supreme, and while inexpensive trendy runway-inspired clothing may seem like a great thing for both your style and your wallet, shopping at fast fashion retailers can actually cost you more money in the long run. Add to that the cost to the environment and there is a whole other story to be told.
RELATED: Eco-Friendly Gadget Guide
According to Forbes, the apparel industry is responsible for 10% of the global carbon emissions. Ten! That’s second only to oil.
If the impact on the environment doesn’t shock you into considering more ethical clothing, think about the impact a fast fashion wardrobe really has on your wallet: if you’re paying $10 for a cheaply made T-shirt from a discount clothing store, it may only last you a few washes, which could basically cost you up to $5 per wear.
Whereas if you invest in eco-friendly clothing, you may be paying a bit more, but sustainable brands tend to be better about designing their garments to last. Say you purchase a $30 T-shirt made with higher quality eco friendly materials. That increase in quality can last you years — and thus cost you pennies per wear.
Sounds great for everyone, right?
These days, many apparel brands are realizing their global impact on the environment and taking action. Leaders in the sustainable fashion field include some of our favorites such as Frank And Oak, Everlane and Alternative Apparel, all of which are committed to offering eco-friendly options at affordable prices.
Here, a handful of our favorite sustainable sartorial picks that shine a light on how to shop ethically, while not forcing you to compromise your style.
Eco-Friendly Shirts
Tumblr media
Often a quick and easy grab when shopping on the cheap, shirts and tees can add up in landfills pretty quickly.
United by Blue Standard Pocket Tee
United by Blue has one simple mission: to make the world a cleaner place. For every product sold, the brand will remove one pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways. What’s more, every United by Blue garment is carefully crafted with textiles that keep the ocean, soil and air a little cleaner — and that includes this sleek and simple short sleeve tee. $36 at UnitedbyBlue.com
Pact Slim Polo
A polo shirt should be a part of every man’s wardrobe. Make it an all-organic pesticide-free cotton polo without any toxic dyes, and you’ve got yourself something a little extra special. Pact is a Fair Trade Factory Certified company, which means it makes sure to take care of both the Earth and the people living on it when producing its clothing. $24.50 at WearPact.com
Alternative Apparel Coed Burnout Sweatshirt
Alternative Apparel prides itself on its commitment to the planet and its people — from opting for oxo-biodegradable plastic mailer bags to using WRAP-certified factories ensuring fair, safe and clean workspaces for its employees. With that in mind, its French Terry is crafted from 65% organic cotton and 35% post-consumer recycled plastic polyester, so it’ll hold up in the washer and dryer as well. $48 at AlternativeApparel.com
Eco-Friendly Hoodies and Jackets
Tumblr media
When you buy hoodies and jackets, you expect them to last longer than a thin T-shirt, so why not factor in the environment next time you make a purchase?
Fair Indigo Hoodie
With respective backgrounds in fashion, the founders of Fair Indigo knew first hand how awful the fashion industry can be for the environment — and they decided to make a change by creating timeless, high quality clothing that will last beyond a couple seasons. The classic T-shirt hoodie was fairly made in Peru using 100% organic Pima cotton, which happens to be one of the strongest cottons available thanks to its extra long fibers. $59.90 at FairIndigo.com
Pact Classic Zip Hoodie
Certified organic cotton? Check. Fair Trade Factory Certified? Check. Super comfy hoodie? Check. The Pact classic zip hoodie is equal parts comfortable and stylish. Plus, Pact’s certified organic cotton uses over 100 less gallons of water than a regular cotton hoodie. $31.50 at WearPact.com
Frank And Oak Water Repellent Bomber
Frank And Oak’s approach to sustainability is a little different: It’s goal is to ensure most of its products are crafted with post-consumer waste, organic and sustainably harvested cottons and sustainable processes that use as little water as possible. They’re also committed to making sure you look great — and this no-down fill, partly recycled polyester bomber jacket proves it. $149 at FrankandOak.com
RELATED: Eco-Friendly Booze
Eco-Friendly Pants
Tumblr media
Breaking in those jeans and chinos feels great. Just imagine how great it will feel knowing that they won’t hurt the environment once you’re done with them.
Everlane The Performance Chino
Everlane’s ethical approach includes fair wages and reasonable hours at all of their factories, using quality materials to ensure each piece will last years, and price transparency — so you can rest assured you’re not paying more than you should be. Their performance chino is particularly impressive since it has the qualities of a tech pant, but feels as good as your everyday chino. Feel free to throw it in the washer and dryer without worry. $68 at Everlane.com
Frank And Oak Slim-Stretch Denim
A pair of Frank And Oak jeans uses almost 95% less water than your typical pair of fast fashion denim. Their “hydro-less” denim also uses 50% fewer chemicals and up to 79% less energy when being produced. They’re so stylish and comfy, we bet you’d have no idea. $89.50 at FrankAndOak.com
Patagonia Lightweight All-Wear Hemp Pants
These cotton and hemp pants from one of the more well-known environmentally conscious companies Patagonia are as comfy as they are stylish (read: very). Sure, hemp is cool and durable, but it’s also a great option for clothes since it requires no irrigation, uses no pesticides or harmful fertilizers, and is harvested by hand. On top of that, Patagonia makes sure production is Fair Trade Certified and allows for you to follow the footprint of their supplier. $89 at Patagonia.com
Eco-Friendly Shoes
Tumblr media
Shoes are tricky thanks to leathers, rubbers and dyes used to make them. But, it’s easier now than ever before to find brands that are literally focusing on their footprint.
Allbirds Wool Loungers
After years of planning, Allbirds’ co-founders crafted a sustainable wool fabric specifically for footwear that is guaranteed to last longer, breathe better and be more comfortable than your typical pair of wool shoes. They’ve also ensured all packaging is crafted from 90% post-consumer recycled cardboard. $95 at Allbirds.com
Stella McCartney X Adidas Stan Smith Sneakers
Adidas has launched its first vegan leather Stan Smith with its long-time luxury collaborator Stella McCartney and with that, made quite a statement. McCartney has long been known for her respect for the world on which we all reside, and to see her relatively recent foray into menswear merge with one of the most iconic and ubiquitous sneakers out there gives us hope for more and more options from both brands in the future. $325 at StellaMcCartney.com
Handmade Matters Oxfords
Handmade Matters takes slow fashion to another level: each pair of shoes is hand-crafted by artisans around the world, using eco-certified premium leather — a by-product of the Colombian food industry. The company prides itself on helping unemployed artisans become sustainable business owners and job creators for their communities. This Oxford style supports living wages and social benefits for female artisans in Spain. $158 at HandmadeMatters.store

Eco-Friendly Accessories
Tumblr media
A little bit of this and a little bit of that all adds up pretty quickly. With a little digging you can find the brands that consider both the future and the past when making your odds and ends.
Elvis & Kresse Washbag
A dopp kit that is both cool and eco-friendly can be done. Case in point: the washbag from Elvis & Kresse. Featuring durable decommissioned fire-hose instead of leather and lined with recycled parachute silk, this dopp kit is not only stylish, but when you buy it, you’re reducing landfill waste to help keep you clean. $75 at ElvisandKresse.com
Cariloha Bamboo Trouser Socks
Cariloha’s socks are made from bamboo, which is the ideal combination of breathable and antibacterial, thus making it a perfect sock material. Bamboo is also a highly sustainable plant — it requires minimal water to grow, it’s biodegradable and it flourishes naturally, without any added pesticides or fertilizers. $12 at Cariloha.com
Toms Fitzpatrick Sunglasses
If we’re writing about how to shop ethically, it’s hard to compile a list and not include Toms. The Toms brand ethos is all about doing better, so it made perfect sense to pick a pair of sunglasses from their stock here. Designed from acetate, which is both environmentally friendly and made from renewable materials means these stylish sunnies do good while they look good. $129.95 at Toms.com
How to Recycle Clothing
So your garment is at the end of its life — what do you do now? There is a right way to dispose of clothing and it’s not simply throwing it in the trash or sending it to a thrift shop. If clothing is very old and in poor conditioner or heavily soiled, thrift stores can’t do anything with it.
While you can’t simply throw old textiles into your apartment’s recycling bin, companies like Patagonia and The North Face actually accept their own clothing items back for recycling and mass market retailers like H&M often offer clothing recycling bins in-store to accept any brand for recycling.
If you don’t want to lug your old clothes to the mall, many local companies offer textile recycling drop-offs. Check out SMART (Secondary Materials And Recycled Textiles) for solutions across the US.
So there you have it. Shopping for eco-friendly clothing doesn’t have to be granola. In fact, it’s become easier than ever to look sharp while selecting ethical clothing and being a conscious consumer. Now get out there and make the world a better place just by getting dressed.

These 13 Statement Watches Are All Under $500 (Really)
Best Watches Under $500
For lots of guys, watches are like wine: the perceived learning curve intimidates many who assume you can’t get anything good for a reasonable price. That’s not the case, however, timepiece-wise; in fact when just starting out in the horological universe it’s a good idea to begin with something relatively modest and acquaint yourself with the way it wears, works, looks and feels, as a prelude to acquiring a piece you’ll wear for the rest of your life.
RELATED: 10 Best Rolex Watches You Can Buy Right Now
Which is not to say your starter watch shouldn't be a keeper, but as your taste (and budget) matures, it will most likely become your secondary timepiece, worn on more casual occasions, but nonetheless a steady companion. And it may be years before you see the need to upgrade if you choose wisely. Perhaps you’ll pass it along to your son. The threshold for getting into a decent quality watch, one we’d consider to be professional grade, hovers around the $500 mark, which is where we’ve set the bar for this rundown.
Our Picks: 13 Best Watches Under $500
Movado Museum Classic Watch Bulova Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch Tissot Tradition Watch Victorinox AirBoss Mach 6 Watch Alpina Horological Smartwatch Citizen Blue Angels World Eco-Drive Watch Tissot V8 Quartz Chronograph Watch Momentum Titanium Vortec GMT Watch Glycine Kriegs Marine Manual Wind Watch Hamilton Khaki Field Watch Seiko Padi Automatic Diver's Watch Vincero Kairos Automatic Rose Gold Watch G-SHOCK G-STEEL Watch
At this price you can and should go for real watch brands as opposed to fashion brands who are merely branding cheap timepieces usually made in China. Watchmakers like Bulova, Tissot, Alpina and Hamilton, all founded in the 1800s, have passed the hundred-year mark and withstood the test of time, so to speak, and are well worth investing in. Look for deals on discontinued models on Amazon, where sale prices can be 40% off or more, and you can end up scoring a real deal.
The man who overspends before he knows the worth of what he’s buying does nobody any favors, least of all himself. And not wearing a watch because you’re waiting to afford something expensive is a foolish economy, leaving you bereft and bare-wristed. Buy wisely and you won’t be wasting money on a starter model; take good care of it and there will even be some residual resale value to put towards your next purchase.
Another reason not to pay more than $500 for a watch is the amount of punishment you plan to dole out. If you work with your hands or just don’t want to worry too much about damaging an expensive timepiece, it’s better to buy something that won’t break the bank if it ends up needing to be replaced sooner rather than later. That said it’s better just to take the watch off if there’s any danger of it getting damaged.
Don’t think of it as a “cheap” watch or something you’re compromising on however; do the research (actually we did it for you), spend as much as you possibly can and take satisfaction in something that’s worth more than you paid for it. There’s no shame in shopping around or wearing a less expensive watch than the loudmouthed guy in the next cubicle who probably still owes money on his.

Price should in any case be a secondary consideration when buying a watch. Look for a design that pleases you, in a size you’re comfortable with, that has the functions you want, and then consider what’s it’s worth. Perhaps you prefer a metal bracelet to a leather strap, but be aware that for a minimal extra investment you can get both. Nylon straps available in a host of colors are another way to change up the look of your watch.
1. Movado Museum Classic
Tumblr media
Sometimes less is more, and that couldn’t be put into practice with more elegance and integrity than the Movado Museum Classic. Minimal design, clean lines and refined sophistication is what you can expect from this formal version of the iconic style. Stainless steel frames the 40mm black face while a black calfskin leather straps finishes off the streamlined design. Dressed up, for sure, but not limited to formal occasions. No wonder it's our Editor's Choice. It elevates any look from basic boardroom to boss status quicker than you can say “what time is it”?
$495 at Movado.com
2. Bulova Stainless Steel Chronograph
Tumblr media
Bulova resonates with timeless style, quality craftsmanship and affordability. This water-resistant model is crafted in stainless steel and features a bold black dial, luminous hands and Japanese quartz movement ensuring impeccable accuracy.
$161 at Amazon.com
3. Tissot Tradition
Tumblr media
Tissot is a very well-respected second tier Swiss watch brand, founded in Le Locle in 1853 and best known for a wide range of sports models. This dressier traditional style comes on a black leather strap with a 42mm case and an extremely accurate Japanese quartz movement. Tissot has the look and feel of a much pricier watch; only you need to know the truth. Just the name sounds expensive. $249 at Amazon.com
4. Victorinox AirBoss Mach 6
Tumblr media
Victorinox, founded in 1884, is famous for its Swiss army knives, but its timepieces are just as useful. The AirBoss is modeled on a vintage pilot’s watch, and is quite large at 45mm, which may not be for everyone. Powered by a Swiss-made automatic movement, which many value higher than the usual quartz you find in this price range. It even has a distinctive exhibition-style, transparent case back so you can show it off. The only thing this watch doesn’t have is a can opener. $414.99 at Amazon.com
5. Alpina Horological Smartwatch
Tumblr media
Smartwatches are often far less attractive than their mechanical counterparts, but this number from Alpina, founded in Switzerland in 1883, mates high tech to classic looks. It’s really something of a hybrid. The watch monitors sleep patterns and physical activity if you want it to and automatically adjusts to different time zones, interfacing with an app on your smartphone. Even if you lose the data it will automatically restore itself from a backup.  $361.99 at Walmart.com
6. Citizen Blue Angels World Eco-Drive
Tumblr media
This racy chronograph from Japan’s underrated Citizen is a technological wonder with atomic timekeeping in five time zones (North America, the UK, Europe, Japan and China) and automatic time in 26 world cities. It’s named after the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, and would not look out of place on the wrist of a stunt pilot. Citizen's Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light — from any natural or artificial light source — and converts it into energy, which is stored in a permanently rechargeable solar cell, and can literally run forever. $415 at Amazon.com

7. Tissot V8 Quartz Chronograph
Tumblr media
Our second Tissot on the list, the handsome V8 45mm chronograph is water resistant to 100 m (330 ft) and won’t break the bank. Most people will assume you paid a lot more. Chronographs are a good buy in general as they offer more bang for the buck, hold their value better, and look more expensive to boot. $236.88 at Amazon.com
8. Momentum Titanium Vortec GMT
Tumblr media
This sizable 44mm watch on a rubberized strap has a GMT function allowing it to can keep track of two different time zones, and luminescent markers mean you can easily read the time in the dark. Water resistant to 330 feet, it also has a titanium case, which is both lighter and stronger than stainless steel. Momentum might not be a big brand name but it has resonance for connoisseurs, and titanium watches usually cost a lot more; getting one for this price is unheard of.  $285 at Amazon.com
9. Glycine Kriegs Marine Manual Wind
Tumblr media
Glycine, founded in 1914, is another second-tier Swiss watch brand that delivers excellent value for money. This model has vintage military looks and is oversized at 48mm, so make sure your wrist can handle it. It also has a coveted manual wind movement for the watch snobs among us. We firmly believe that if you’re at all mechanically-minded, once you’ve experienced a manual wind movement you’ll never want a quartz again.  $429 at Amazon.com
10. Hamilton Khaki Field Watch
Tumblr media
Hamilton, founded in Pennsylvania in 1892, belies the common belief that only Swiss watches are worth investing in. The field watch is a classic design that may not be dressy enough for the opera but can handle most situations with aplomb. It’s an American style statement that goes perfectly with your L.L. Bean and Filson gear, and has been widely imitated though usually without concomitant quality. The 38mm size is fairly uniformly flattering and the automatic movement is usually reserved for pricier pieces. $389.60 at Amazon.com
11. Seiko Padi Automatic Diver's Watch
Tumblr media
Many precious Swiss diving watches never see any underwater action. Seiko’s classic “Pepsi” (i.e. red and blue) diver is designed to be used, and is rated to 650 feet. The 44mm piece has the iconic rotating bezel that allows you to keep track of how long you’ve been underwater. This is the only other watch on the list with an automatic movement, and would normally cost considerably more. The Pepsi coloring makes a bold and sporty statement but the watch has the chops to back it up. $308.05 at Amazon.com
12. Vincero Kairos Automatic Rose Gold
Tumblr media
The limited edition Vincero Kairos rose gold automatic watch is clean, stylish and masculine and each is numbered ensuring that yours is on of a kind. With rose gold being a hue that has made a solid come back to the men’s watch world, the substantial 42mm rose gold stainless steel case frames the understated black face in such a way that will surely get you noticed. Add to that the embossed top-grain brown leather strap and you have a bold, modern statement piece that will get the conversation started for you.
$299 at VinceroWatches.com
13. G-SHOCK G-STEEL
Tumblr media
Rose gold is having a moment in men’s watches right now, and nowhere is it more unexpected than on a G-SHOCK. Not as traditional as others on our list, there's no denying that Casio makes a mean watch if that's the style you're looking for. This G-STEEL style has Casio's Tough Solar technology, Bluetooth connectivity to keep and runs on solar power. Plus its water-resistant to 200m and is shock resistant, which of course, is what G-SHOCK is all about.  $380 at GShock.com
These watches won't set you back that much cash, but they will instantly add equity to your style. We have tons more watch coverage for any style and any price.

AskMen Style Defined: Cool Style for the Warm Weather
Here at AskMen, we strive to bring you new and interesting content to help answer any questions you may have from sex and dating to health and fitness and food and booze. And this latest installment of our new weekly series AskMen Style Defined is all about taking the tropics — or at least tropical style — with you wherever you go.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Eric Wertz now resides in upstate New York, about an hour north of the city he once called home. As an electrician, avid traveler, and men’s lifestyle blogger, there is no shortage of inspiration for his site Blue Collar Prep. Focusing on fashion, food, and family, Wertz has a distinct style and bold visual presence on his blog as well as his Instagram page by the same name.
“Behind the fashionable IG posts, I’m a true family man who loves exploring and enduring any new adventure with my family,” Wertz says of his life we see in his photoshoots. “We are all avid skiers and love the Caribbean. From local road trips to aspirations of seeing as much of this world as we can together, any new experience I have I honestly always want it to me with my wife and son.”
To see Wertz’s stylish feed is to see someone who has a clear vision about who he is: “I’m a blue collar guy who happens to love fashion. It’s this passion that triggered my wife [Sarina] and I to start our own brand, BLUE #NotTheColorBlue.”
He and Sarina, a photographer in her own right started the brand with a simple, staple accessory of his — the beanie. “We started out with the one accessory I use in a lot of my looks and are currently working on some shirt designs,” he explains. “With such a full schedule it’s hard to devote 100 percent to anything right now, but I honestly love the balance of my life — from being a homeowner, a dad, a devoted hubby, a lifestyle blogger, a brand owner, I’m definitely never bored and love the versatility of everything we have going on right now.”
His wife isn’t just his partner in life and business, she, along with his late father, serve as constant inspiration every day. “My wife has just an effortlessly cool style and my father was able to pull off just about anything in terms of outfit selections,” he tells us. “I feel like a lot of the pieces I choose today, I could easily have seen him rocking back in the day!”
But like many of the creatives we speak with for our weekly series, Wertz doesn’t just draw inspiration from a single source. “My inspiration also comes from just about anywhere … from the many stylish guys on the ‘gram, to pieces my wife rocks, to someone on the street, to even the casually cool pieces my son [Nate] wears. I get my inspo from everything around me!”

“For this look featured I was actually on my way to a derby party for J. Peterman and chose these specific pieces from them to rock at the event,” he says about sophisticatedly styled spring ensemble. “I love this outfit and can’t wait to take that blue cargo jacket and re-work it into an entirely different look.”
It’s fitting that Wertz is a fan of travel to island destinations such as the Caribbean, since this outfit — from the Panama hat to the cropped summer-weight trousers — evokes feelings of tropical life even in an urban setting of New York City.
He continues on explaining that he likes blending different styles. “I’m definitely not just married to one. I like versatile pieces that can be used in any look, whether it’s street style, grunge, or more dapper vibes.” Judging from the variety of outfits in his feed, we can guess he will be bringing a lot more stylish ideas as the weather continues to warm up.

Hottest Tattoo Trends ... and Ones to Avoid
Best and Worst Tattoo Trends
So you’ve decided to get a tattoo. Congrats! But before you commit to inking yourself with something you saw on Instagram, take a moment to think about what you’re going to get and where you’re going to put it.
RELATED: First Tattoo Advice
Some tattoos look great in photos but don’t necessarily stand the test of time. As Paul Timman at Sunset Strip Tattoo in Los Angeles tells AskMen, “Your tattoo’s not going anywhere in 10 years or 20 years or 30 years or 40 — maybe even up to 60 years — so you don’t want to get a tattoo that’s gonna look good for a year and then turn to s—t for 59 more years.”
Luckily, more people seem to be seeking out tattoo artists with a lot of experience “rather than just going into a shop and picking something off a wall,” says Simon Halpern of 1 Point Tattoo in Kailua, Hawaii. “Whether it’s black and gray or big pattern work or color realism, people are seeking out good artists that specialize in those styles.” He advises having a consultation first with your tattoo artist about what you have in mind.
We spoke to some tattoo artists about the latest trends, which fads they hope fade away (literally) and where you should never get inked.
Designs
Tumblr media
Grez
What’s In:
Traditional Americana and Japanese designs are back, according to Timman. “Japanese tattoos, the way they’re designed, the way they’re drawn, the way they lay out on the body — they’re timeless, they’re classic,” he says. Same goes for Americana tattoos. “There’s this classic saying, ‘bold will hold,’ meaning they do these little bit thicker lines and bigger designs. Those designs will look the same way in 10 or 20 years’ time as they do now.”
Fine line black and gray tattoos are in too, says Rose Hardy of Kings Avenue Tattoo in NYC. “Japanese flowers (chrysanthemums and peonies), snakes, tigers, leopards, dragons, skulls, eagles, pinups and lady heads, decorative patterns and black work, barbed wire and roses,” are popular, she says, adding that “sacred hearts are massively on the rise, whether the wearer is religious or not. A lot of these are classic designs and have always made great tattoos and, most importantly, if done right, won’t ‘date.’”
Geometric and tribal designs also remain popular, with Halpern telling AskMen that “people are getting into the spiritual side of things, whether it’s sacred geometry or kind of different mantras.”
Ryan Henry of VH1’s “Black Ink Crew: Chicago” agrees, especially when it comes to Polynesian designs, which he sees growing in popularity. “I do love the traditional connectivity with it that people go and research and then apply it to their special piece,” he says. However, “I don't like people getting them from just anybody that's not researched, and it veers away from the traditional look of it.”
What’s Out:
Pinterest and Instagram have a lot to answer for when it comes to questionable fads.
“These days, the viral effect of social media can launch a crazy-looking tattoo to the mainstream, but this might not take into account the quality of the art or whether this tattoo will even last more than a couple years,” says Ami James, owner of Love Hate Tattoos in Miami, and cofounder of the website Tattoodo. “That's one of the downsides of having the community spread over social media — these platforms aren't authorities on tattooing, so even if a piece has a ton of likes, that might not mean it's a good tattoo.”
Those super small and intricate tattoos that you see celebs showing off are unlikely to look as good in five or 10 years. “It’s all gonna collapse and the lines are going to bleed into each other and literally be a black blob. Do you really want that?” Timman points out.
Also on the decline? “Infinity signs, feathers turning into birds, pocket watches, white tattoos and watercolor styles,” according to Hardy. “A lot of people jumped on the bandwagon with miniature tattoos and watercolor designs, but now it seems to be dying down, which is not a bad thing, considering that although they look good for a photo, they don’t really stand the test of time.”
Another request tattoo artists don’t get so much anymore? People having their partner’s name inked on their skin. “With the invention of the removal laser, I guess the sentiment isn’t quite as serious!” Hardy says.

Zac Sheinbaum
What’s In:
While sleeves and back tattoos remain popular and full legs are also big in parts of the country, Hardy says that palm and hand tattoos are on the rise. Timman believes the side of the hand is also going to be a popular spot.
But a word of warning: Although the hands are trendy areas to get inked, anywhere below the wrists doesn’t tattoo well. Ariana Grande, who got her palm inked, admitted as much when the tattoo she got spelled out the word for a Japanese style barbecue grill instead of the title of her single “7 Rings.”
“This spot also peels a ton and won’t last,” she explained on January 31 after the second tattoo she got to correct her error also turned out to be wrong. (And while we’re talking about it, do your homework: Check that the word you’re getting inked actually means what you think it does, and make sure it’s spelled correctly!)
What’s Out:
“Tattooing has limitations, the skin, the body has limitations,” Timman says, explaining that certain body parts don’t hold onto ink as well as others, so your tattoo could fade or bleed. That means finger tattoos (whether on the side or top), which have been in for the past couple of years, are out, as are ears. Just because it looks good in an Instagram photo “doesn’t mean it’s going to look good once it’s healed,” according to Timman, who advises Googling the phrase “healed finger tattoos.”
The artists we spoke to agree — don’t copy Post Malone and get a face tattoo. “They’re stupid,” says Halpern. “I hope that trend dies soon.”
While he says it might be OK if you’re fully covered in tattoos or it’s a cultural thing, for most people it’s just a bad idea. Timman admits he’s turned away people who’ve asked to be inked on their face. “You’re not going to get a job anywhere and I’m not going to contribute to that,” he insists. “I want you to be able to have a life and not be looked at as a freak walking down the street.”
And while laser removal is always an option, be warned that it is painful, expensive, and doesn’t always completely remove the ink, particularly if the tattoo isn’t freshly done. There could be scarring and skin discoloration, Timman warns, adding that the next big tattoo trend “could be a wave of people doing coverups on their tattoos from 2010 to 2018.”

Color: Yes or No?
Tumblr media

Japanese-style tattoos tend to have vibrant colors, while geometric designs are often done in black and gray, but choosing whether to go bold or monochromatic also depends on your skin and lifestyle, Halpern says. If you’ve got a darker complexion or spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer, color tattoos may not be the best idea.
“In Hawaii there’s such a huge population that are Polynesian and they’re people of color, and because they’re in so much sun, color tattoos are going to be a bit more limited than in say, Oregon, where there’s a predominantly Caucasian culture and the colors are gonna stand out more,” he says. “If you look like Casper the ghost, cause your skin’s so white, you’re gonna have a larger color palette that you can use, ‘cause color shows up better. Here in Hawaii, there’s more black and gray — you want the tattoo that’s gonna stand up over time.”
And the key to making sure that tat is going to look great decades later? Research, insists Henry, who own 9Mag Tattoo in Chicago. “You have to do your research first,” he says. “[You] have to do you research on the artist, on their previous work, on their healed work. Like I said, just No. 1 would be doing your research and picking an artist that you chose to be able to create something for what the idea you have.”
Henry also has a few words of advice for those looking to get inked in line with a current popular trend. “I would advise them to possibly not get it done right away and think on it for a while,” he says. “Most times, tattoos are impulsive when they're in that trendy sense, but if you have to second guess whether or not you would want to have this in years because it’s something trendy, then you’re gonna need some time to think on that because, you know, everything changes with the season and these are permanent.”

Watch Snob Dives Into the Dangers of Trying to Be Cool
Watch Snob on Classic Versus Edgy
A Tale of Two Watches
Thank you for your weekly education sessions. They have been invaluable.
I seek your thoughts on a choice between two very different watches. I wish to emphasise that I feel that I do not have any gaps in my collection and these are purely for self indulgence (although I am very aware that having a collection is self indulgence in itself).
RELATED: Last Week: Watch Snob on In-House Movements and Classic Watches
I love both the Datograph and the Ulysse Nardin Freak Out (which is at least a bit more affordable than the Cruiser). I would like to think that I appreciate the histories and horological significance of both watches — the Datograph shook the chronograph world and the Freak gave us silicon and a fun form factor.
To give you some context: I already have a A. Lange & Söhne 1, so I have Lange's beautiful finishing to admire. I also have a Rolex Batman as a tool watch. I have a Speedmaster Pro, so I have a chronograph.
Which of the two should I get? The Datograph will give me many hours of enjoyment admiring the movement and that clean classic dial, but the Freak Out is a fun, eye catching (my own eye, not others) watch which can work very nicely in a casual environment. It also feels extremely comfortable to wear.
Which of the two would you consider the more satisfying to own?
I don’t think there is any question that the Datograph is much more apt than the Freak to offer you perennial enjoyment. It’s as much a classic as the Lange I, if not more so, in some sense — one of the very, very few truly great modern manually wound, lateral clutch, column wheel chronographs, and so much more than the sum of its parts. The fact that you are even asking the question is a bit mysterious to me — they are two vastly different watches and one has the feeling that perhaps you are a bit tired of your own classicism (which is very much evident in the watches that you already own) and want something that is a bit less universally admired — something which is, for lack of a better word, “fun.”
The Freak certainly is that. Now lest I be misunderstood, the Freak is in its own way, as much a modern classic and as much a defining watch as the Datograph. The two watches came out within a few years of each other, more than twenty years ago and just as the Datograph set a new standard for the highest level in refined, classical watchmaking, so the Freak virtually single-handedly gave birth to the genre of the super-watch — the watch as a form of postmodern art, if you will.
It’s a worthy timepiece but, as you have to choose between it and the Datograph (at least that is how you have framed the matter) I can’t help but think that unless you are really determined to do something that surprises yourself, and upsets your own expectations of yourself, the Lange will prove the more enduring choice.
Total Blackout
Thank you for a most entertaining and informative column which has become a weekly reading staple. I am looking at replacing my highly appreciated SKA389 with a similar look and type watch.
The black look appeals to me as it tends to be different from the much more common polished steel employed in everyday watches.
For financial reasons the watch will also have to serve as my dress watch, and again the black bracelet in my opinion makes this watch versatile by providing a nice contrast to a light coloured shirt. I have identified two candidates:
Sinn UX S Tudor Black Bay Dark
I realize these watches represent different technological solutions, so my question: Is the Tudor sufficiently superior from a horological point of view to justify paying a premium?
RELATED: Watch Snob: Best Watches of Baselworld 2019
Also, are there any other possible candidates in this price bracket that I may have overlooked?
I have a special loathing in my heart for all-black watches, in general. They have always seemed to me to be a terrible affectation — the sort of thing a person buys who wants to be flashy, but is either too timid or too poor to buy a gold watch and be done with it. It is unfair of me and I am sure that there are many fine individuals who like all-black watches but even when they come that way from their manufacturers they always look as if they were once perfectly respectable plain steel watches before their owner chose to “mod” them.
If you absolutely must have one of these, I think the Tudor is certainly a better watch to some degree from a technical standpoint but not so much that that would be the definitive element in selecting one. If you’re looking at all-black watches at all, cosmetics mean much to you and the Sinn is perfectly respectable wristwatch with, I happen to think, somewhat better aesthetics as an all black watch than the Tudor. Still, though, both have the same effect on me as any all black watch — they make what’s left of my hair stand on end.
Tracking Down a Tank
Could you please offer me any advice on my possibly buying a used Tank Basculante, a model on which I don’t recall you ever commenting?
I’ve worn a steel Reverso 1931 as my daily work watch for years and would like a second two handed manual winder. I’ve tried on a Saxonia Thin 37 (perfect except way out of both my budget and my comfort level) and a Master Ultra Thin (don’t like the thin-edged case). The Basculante seems to be exactly what I’m looking for, with its Cartier looks and style, its Tank heritage, and its presumably respectable Piguet movement. Thanks.
I can’t quite believe I’ve never written anything about the Basculante because it is one of my favorite wristwatches, with all of the charm of the Reverso and all of the Gallic elan that is Cartier at its best. The only problem with the Basculante is that you may have to hunt a bit to find one with the Piguet movement. There seem to be a plethora of the quartz models out there, which is fine if you don’t object to quartz but so much of the interest of the Basculante derives from the fact that it integrates that wonderful Piguet calibre so nicely to the idiosyncratic design.
If you can find one in good condition, as with all vintage watches it is reasonable to expect you will need to have it serviced and moreover, by someone who has their wits about them (you could do worse than to just have Cartier take care of it, as it is very much a specialist’s job) but I can think of no reason whatsoever why you shouldn’t enjoy the hunt, and having found one, having this very beautiful and characterful watch on your wrist. Good hunting.

Everything You Need to Know About Spring Cleaning Your Closet
How to Spring Clean Your Closet
There is something about spring that always seems to inspire cleaning. As temperatures warm up after a long, dark winter spent inside with little opportunity to ventilate with open doors and windows, you might find yourself digging through layers of coats, scarves, and sweaters in your closet. While looking for those warm-weather essentials, you have probably said to yourself, “It's time to clean out this closet.”
RELATED: 8 Ways to Give Your Bedroom Sex Appeal
This means it’s the perfect time for a good spring cleaning. We talked to some experts who know a thing or two about how to get a closet organized and keep it that way. It’s not as difficult a task as you might think.
Start With a Plan
Tumblr media
First things first: Don’t be too hard on yourself if you have accumulated a lot to deal with since the last time you cleaned out the closet). Not everything has to be tackled at once. California Closets design consultant Nicole Caswell recommends tackling one section at a time so the whole project isn’t overwhelming.
“The easiest way to to start the decluttering process is to really see what you’ve got. Go into the project knowing your end goal,” says Caswell. “Do you want to minimize your wardrobe, display your clothing, or organize your pieces by season? You will more likely achieve a well-organized closet if you are focused on a specific end result.”
“Avoid stress with a realistic goal,” San Francisco-based professional organizer Molly Cole of Cole + Co. tells us. “A lot of my clients tell me they feel like they make an even bigger mess when they try to organize their closets.” She advises that even if you only get rid of a couple of items, you’ll feel better about your project if you achieve what you initially set out to do. “Have a plan for the items you decided to part with [and] remember to give yourself time to make that run to [a donation center such as] Goodwill.”
Michael Dimopoulos of Lazy Susans Cleaning Service in New York City recommends taking the following into consideration before starting: “If I’m just seasonally rotating my wardrobe, I need to be clever about what stays and what goes, in the event that I need to find a particular item.”
Know Your  Personal Limits
Tumblr media
“Our closets are extremely personal, and there is not a ‘one method fits all’ approach to reorganizing your belongings,” points out Caswell. “Some might want to toss out their items and save the bare minimum, while others may want to keep everything and maximize their storage space.”
“Any method that gets you past procrastination is the best one for you,” agrees Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, clothing resale app Mercari’s finance expert and founder of Ask The Money Coach. “[According to a recent Mercari study] Americans currently have an estimated $93 billion in unused stuff cluttering our homes … just take the first step!”
The KonMari Method is the organizing method du jour, but watch for variations on the theme. “It’s important to remember that nostalgia is not your friend,” says Cole. “Many people want to hold on to items, not because they have any practical use, but simply because it brings up memories” She encourages her clients to think about the actual memory an item is connected to. Does it bring up a happy memory or a sad one? “If it’s the latter, it’s probably time to let it go,” she says.
“KonMari is very popular, but I found that it wasn’t for me,” The Container Store’s closet buyer Jimmy Seifert says. “It’s extreme … We like to hold on to things that have meaning … It’s easy to get rid of something that you’ve been holding on for years if it doesn’t mean much to you.” He swears by the Japanese minimalism book titled “Goodbye Things,” wherein author Fumio Sasaki changes his life by getting rid of everything he doesn’t absolutely need. “That actually pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone.”
RELATED: How Often You Should Be Replacing Your Sheets
Seifert recommends hiring a service, suggesting that some can even help with a move; purging, packing, and organizing as you leave one dwelling for another.
“It’s very important to give your space a once-over and remove items — especially big ones — that you want to get rid of before you start,” Cole says as a big believer in purging before organizing. “This clears up space and makes organizing much easier in the long run. I like to designate a space for those items outside the ‘organizing zone’ so you’re not stepping over anything or creating more clutter.”
Jordan Barnes, senior director of brand and communications at Mercari, likes to follow this rule of thumb: If you haven’t worn it or used it in a year, get rid of it. “Take a good look at all the stuff in your closet you’re no longer using,” she says. “Think about why you bought it. Maybe you moved to a new city with different weather. Maybe you upgraded to a newer phone. Maybe you just never got around to actually wearing those athletic shoes. You bought all that stuff for good reason [and] so will someone else.”
Maximize the Most Minimal Space
Tumblr media
Even professional organizer Dimopoulos admits to feeling the limitations of space. “Living in New York City, unfortunately most of us don’t have much of a choice but to keep some things in off-site storage. You could vacuum-seal heavier items such as coats jackets, and bags, and stack them on top of one and other to maximize the space … or the lack of it.”
Start by paying attention to how you fold. Cole recommends the KonMari folding method (check out YouTube for how-tos) for storing items vertically in drawers, maximizing space and accessibility. Sort clothes in the closet by type, then color. “Organizing is not just about clearing clutter; it’s also about making things aesthetically pleasing,” she points out. “I like to use this notion when organizing a closet, primarily because [it] tends to involve a lot of daily decision-making … which can cause stress and anxiety. If you wake up to a nicely organized closet, you’ll not only feel less stressed as you get dressed for work, but you’ll also feel a great sense of accomplishment when you get that daily reminder of the hard work you put in to organizing that space.”
Tumblr media
The Container Store
“When I am done with everything, I then have the space to coordinate and organize T-shirts, hanging or folded together, long-sleeved T-shirts, sweaters, shirts, jeans, trousers, etc.,” Dimopoulos agrees. “Everything has room to breathe. The ability to see everything is important. I now feel lighter and cleansed and have a sense of being organized.”
Caswell likes utilizing boxes, jewelry drawers, slide-out pant racks, and cabinet doors to store, display, and organize clothing. “When everything has its place, clutter is eliminated,” she points out. “When hanging clothing, make sure to purchase higher quality hangers that are preferably all the same. By keeping hangers, boxes, and containers consistent, your closet looks instantly cleaner.”
Of course, as a buyer for The Container Store, Seifert isn’t short on storage ideas. “Basic shoe storage is probably the most common issue. We also have hangers for just about anything: wooden are best if you have the space, but we also have space-saving ones. Bins and storage boxes are next: I use bins for things that I wear often, keeping them lower in my closet so I can see them. Boxes go up high for seasonal stuff. We also recommend drawer dividers to keep like items together. We have plastic versions, as well as cedar to prevent pests [such as moths].”
RELATED: How to Make Your Apartment Look Bigger
Seifert also shared his thoughts on plastic, both for its environmental impact, as well as whether it’s good for clothing storage. “It depends on what you’re storing,” he says. “We use the phrase ‘fur, feathers, and leathers.’ All of those things need to breathe. If they don’t, they can deteriorate or get moldy, so we recommend cotton storage for them. I wouldn’t put them in a box: Bins are best, or hangers. Cottons and synthetic materials are fine in plastic, though — I use clear plastic boxes for all my sweaters.
“As an alternative to plastic, we carry a brand of post-consumer fiberboard boxes from Sweden called Bigso,” he continues. “If you’re going to buy plastic, buy high-quality products that will last a long time and that don’t have to be replaced often because they crack and break easily. When you are done with them, they can be recycled.”
Donate, Sell, and Recycle the Rest
Tumblr media
Still, now that your closet has been organized and styled, donate what you can’t sell to local charities. “It’s a good idea to review your items at least once a year,” says Caswell, “and if you don’t wear it, find it another home.”
Dimopoulos is a big believer in giving away clothes such as great sweaters, jackets, bags, and coats. “Luckily, I’ve always had someone in my life whose taste in clothes I admired … and who had the best brands that I couldn’t afford,” he says. “I love hand-me-downs. In fact, [over half] of my leather jackets, luxury brand bags, wallets, and coats are from upscale brands that I’d never buy at full retail.” Don’t be afraid to give things to friends and family that might not be as concerned that last season’s styles aren’t exactly “au courant.”
He even suggests doing what he does and always buying second-hand since, by his thinking, it means he saves more. “So yes, I ‘pay it forward’ by donating my excess wardrobe items.”
A quick survey of some of the larger “thrift” charities’ websites suggests that you can donate just about anything, from clothing, shoes, and boots to hats, gloves, and scarves, even some housewares and collectibles. Don’t donate things like personal care items and fragrance. The “Golden Rule” of thrifting applies here: Don’t donate to others that which you would not buy yourself (even if you’re not a second-hand shopper).
Toss or better yet, recycle pilled knits, clothing with holes, used swimsuits, underwear and socks … and anything that smells too bad to ever freshen up or that is badly stained. There are resources for clothing recycling such as Planet Aid which focuses on specific populous areas, TerraCycle which allows for bulk shipping of old textiles, and Earth911 which has an easy search feature that makes it quick and easy to find a drop-off location near you.
If you feel like taking the time, this is also the point at which your discipline may turn profitable. Apps and websites such as Let Go, Mercari, Grailed, Poshmark, The Real Real, even Amazon or the granddaddy of them all, eBay, may allow you to turn certain items back into cash. If you’re a real brand or label fan who has only worn your expensive things a few times or less, this has more potential than clothes or accessories that are in your regular rotation.
Khalfani-Cox suggests doing a quick search to see how much items similar to yours are selling for. That will help you decide whether it’s worth the effort to sell them or just make a donation. “For things you’d like to donate, bear in mind that, over the past few months, organizations like Goodwill say they’ve been overwhelmed due to the popularity of the KonMari tidying method,” she says.
A New Hope
Tumblr media
Once those donations are made, Seifert recommends paring down shopping habits now that you’ve got room for a fresh start. “I find myself buying things that aren’t as trendy, focusing on more classic items that I can have for years if I take care of them,” he says. “I may have less, but what I do have is higher quality. I buy a lot more solid colors so I end up purchasing less all around. That’s a good next step.”
Spring is always a great season to whip that closet into shape and start the green season fresh. Remember, this is not reality TV: Do things at your own pace and set realistic goals. Ask an expert for advice, which could be an organized friend, a hired hand, or even just found within the pages of a book. Be sure to have a clear separation between the “toss pile,” and what you’re keeping.
If you live in a small space, and can afford it, don’t overlook off-site storage if that’s the best solution for you. The “spark joy” conversation may be one best saved for your therapist … even Martha Stewart admits to having a bit of a hoarding mentality. Once you’re done, remember to sell, give away, or donate your cast-offs to your favorite charity.

How to Be Comfortable and Stylish This Spring
AskMen Style Defined: Tech Fabrics Make for a More Comfortable Spring
Here at AskMen, we strive to bring you new and interesting content to help answer any questions you may have from sex and dating to health and fitness and food and booze. And this latest installment of our new weekly series AskMen Style Defined AskMen Style Defineds all about getting comfortable this spring.
RELATED: AskMen Style Defined Last Week: Mathematics of an On-Trend Outfit
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Parker York Smith has called Los Angeles his home for the past decade. As a menswear and lifestyle blogger and content creator for his site The Looksmith, Smith is a self-declared “fashion nerd” whose style ranges from sharp tailored suiting to tie-dye T-shirts, depending on his mood — and sometimes he wears both.
“[My] blog was started in mid-2015 on a whim after my wife suggested that I start taking pictures of my outfits and discussing how [and] why I put them together the way that I did,” he tells us. He may have always had an affection for style, but it is not necessarily what he thought he would be doing with his life.
“I was pursuing acting in L.A. for the first six years that I was here and had minimal success, so I liked the idea of becoming my own boss and setting my own schedule,” he says. “I graduated with my degree in electronic media and marketing, so I had a strong idea of what I was doing in this world, but learning the ins and outs was a new experience in the beginning.”
Smith draws inspiration from anything and everything. “I love to walk around the streets of L.A. and take mental notes of outfits that I appreciate,” he tells us. “I’m also a big believer in window shopping to see how mannequins are being dressed and what’s going to be in style.” He uses Instagram and Pinterest to curate rolling visual mood boards to refer to later on to generate ideas for specific shoots he wants to produce.

What did he do to plan for this outfit he shot? “Putting this look together was inspired by something that a guy who works in a modern office would want to wear,” he explains. “I’m a huge believer in dressing up for work (within reason) because it impacts output so positively.”
As for what stood out most about this outfit, it’s comfort. “Tech fabrics are something that I’m crazy about right now because of how great they look and how they can allow you to feel so much more comfortable all day long,” he tells us. “I like that [this outfit is] something that anyone could wear and look good. Dressing nicely on a daily basis is difficult for a lot of people because sometimes, looking good isn’t as comfortable ... it’s too tight or stuffy.”
Modern tech fabrics are great since they breathe and move much like other, more traditional fabrics. Innovation has introduced moisture-wicking and temperature self-regulating qualities from wool, silver, cotton, and others. Even polyester has come a long way from the days of leisure suits to now being incorporated in luxury designs that both look good and feel comfortable.
RELATED: AskMen Style Defined: Get Ready for Spring
Smith says that after a long “winter” in Los Angeles, he is excited for spring. “We had our first ‘winter’ in L.A. in years, which means that it rained about six times and the temperatures were below 65 … [so] I’m really excited to spend a lot of time outside this spring and summer.” His plans include soaking up the sunshine at the beach, spending time at the dog park with their two dogs, and hitting some outdoor concerts. “We have a couple of weddings to attend as well,” he adds. “So that’s always fun.”
Items to shop inspired by Smith’s look:
Budget:

If you still feel like you may not be able to pull off something like this as the months get warmer, Smith has some sage words of advice: style is subjective.
“Just because you see me wearing this outfit and feel like it’s easy for me because of my proportions, don’t immediately assume it’s impossible for you to look great ... It’s easy to look at social media or magazines and assume all of those people just woke up like that,” he admits. “However it’s taken everyone years of trial and error (a lot of error) to figure it out. Stick with it! You’ll be glad you did.”

How to Make Your Apartment Look Bigger
How to Make Your Apartment Look Bigger
No matter your living situation — your first place with a college roommate, that studio you found in your price range, or that tiny apartment you and your partner nabbed in the most sought-after neighborhood — most of us have had a small apartment at one point in our lives. And as the years go on, that will likely be increasingly the case. The largest cohort of working-age folks, millennials, are moving to urban and metro areas in record numbers. This can only mean one thing: more people and fewer apartments.
RELATED: How Often You Should Be Replacing Your Sheets
Once you’re all moved in, your goal is to maximize your space to the best of your ability. Short of knocking down walls to the neighbor's apartment, how can you make a small space seem more open? It’s easier than you may think. We spoke with expert interior designers who work regularly in city-sized spaces to get quick and easy design and décor hacks that will make you (and anyone else you might entertain) feel like your apartment is practically the Red Keep.
Seeing Is Believing
One of design’s most basic functions is influencing how you perceive and respond to what you are seeing through visual cues. While simple design can’t literally enlarge your surroundings, it can help do so figuratively. You can start with the walls enclosing your space.
“Textures or small patterns on wallpaper create the effect of appearing to be farther away than they actually are,” says Stefan Steil, New York School of Interior Design faculty member and principal of Steilish Interiors & Architecture. Thus, they extend your perspective past the actual wall. And you can even apply the same concept to ceilings.
Fallyn Flaherty-Earp, DuPont’s market and business development manager, agrees. She points to their Celestial vinyl (commercial grade and consequently pricier) wallcovering collections inspired by the heavenly bodies — rings of Saturn stripes and “flying fish” patterns from the Volan constellation that “create the illusion of a much larger space.”
Tumblr media

Should you choose to paint instead, be aware that there is some debate on the merits of a light or dark color in enhancing space. But Brian del Toro, who honed his artistry working at Parish-Hadley and with interiors legend Bunny Williams, feels it’s more important to create consistency.
“[I favor] a monochromatic color scheme,” he says, adding it blurs any distinction of areas and provides uninterrupted continuity throughout. Contrasting colors, he explains, tend to look crowded, while tones from the same hue will keep things unified, adding a feeling of harmony. Benjamin Moore has a helpful guide to finding what color works best for you.

Finish the Wall
Now, turn your attention to what’s actually on the walls. If you have large windows, you’re already ahead of the game. The more natural light you allow in, the airier your room will seem. Otherwise, you can also benefit from that magician’s ploy of using mirrors.
“[Using mirrors] is an easy trick,” says Anthony Gianacakos, the founder of Anthony George Home. “A well placed mirror will reflect light and make it appear that there are more windows in the space. I recommend positioning one either across or perpendicular to an existing window.”
Tumblr media
Brian del Toro
Art can fulfill the same function, he suggests. “Hang frames in different heights and widths to draw the eye in many different directions and add dimensions in a space.” Similarly, del Toro decided to decorate his own apartment with several pieces of framed art and photography to serve as various “views” or “windows” into panoramic scenes.
Tumblr media
Peter Sandel
Size Matters
There are many misconceptions about design. When it comes to furniture, interior designer Patrick J. Hamilton, whose work has appeared on HGTV, wants to clarify a common design fallacy: “You can use bigger pieces in smaller rooms!”
RELATED: Everything You Need for a Home Bar
This may initially come across as counterintuitive, but according to him, the problem lies more in buying one piece to serve one function, then another, then another, until you end up with what he describes as “a parade of too-small pieces that look like they are all on clearance ... a small bookcase, a side table, a filing cabinet.” And it is the all-too-common accumulation of these disparate items that build up into clutter.
Instead of more trendy and tedious methods meant to “spark joy,” Hamilton has another suggestion: “Look at all your needs at once and address them with one bigger piece, [such as] a chest or console that serves some, if not all, of those functions.” This allows form and function to meet in the middle. “Similarly, pick chairs that double for dining as well as pull-up living room chairs. I always tell clients to think fewer, better, bigger.” With that in mind also consider pieces with multiple uses: couches that collapse into daybeds or ottomans with inside storage.
Tumblr media
Steilish Interiors & Architecture
Peter Sandel may be a Texas native accustomed to wide open spaces, but this talented interior designer and founder of Peter Sandel Design once lived in a studio apartment in one of New York City's most notorious neighborhoods for diminutive domiciles, lower Manhattan’s West Village, for 12 years. He knows what he’s talking about when it comes to furniture size relative to space.
“Incorporating a large, key [piece of furniture] tricks the eye, making the room appear [more grand],” he tells us. “Investing in quality furniture actually saves money in the long run. Online shopping for vintage and antique furniture in sites [such as] Sotheby's Home and Chairish have made what was once an expensive and time consuming hobby into a cost-effective and sustainable way to furnish your home.” Other great sites for serious furniture shoppers include AptDeco, One Kings Lane, even eBay.
As a finishing touch, Steil advises that to anchor your furniture while seemingly creating space around it, add a textured and broad multi-patterned striped rug to stretch your view of the room.
Tumblr media
Steilish Interiors and Architecture
If all this decorating inspiration has you thinking about turning a simple design project into a more substantial renovation, every expert we spoke to echoes the same sentiment: Leave it to the professionals. You will be dodging untold (and likely expensive) DIY disasters. These tips and tricks will help create the illusion of more space in smaller, often rented apartments. If you use this time and (lack of) space to your advantage, you’ll be ready to tackle bigger jobs once you move onto a mortgage.

Traveling Between Time Zones? These GMT Watches Will Help
Top GMT Watches for 2019
Dubbed a “transitional year” by organizers, this years’ Baselwold was noticeably smaller than years previous, though met with just as much enthusiasm for the news emerging out of the annual watch circus. From TAG Heuer’s Autavia collection to Tudor’s Black Bay P01 — a brand that continues to punch above its weight — the 2019 cohort did not disappoint. In addition to these brand new styles, fans of GMT timepieces also got a couple crumbs via an updated bracelet on the Rolex GMT-Master II with a “Batman” black and blue bezel (Caliber 3285), something fans cheered about even though it’s already a familiar style.
RELATED: The 7 Best Pre-Owned Rolex Watches You Can Buy At Walmart
GMTs — particularly from Rolex — always get their fair share of ink. Why? Aside from their utility, there are many reasons.
Appreciation for Design
GMT (short for Greenwich Mean Time) watches are lusted after quite simply for their practicality: With one strapped to your wrist, you can keep time in two time zones or more depending on the watch. And like many purpose-driven designs, their development was birthed by necessity. For Rolex, their GMT took off alongside cocktails and smoking at 30,000 feet.
By the mid 1950s, Pan Am Airlines had already crossed the Atlantic more than 50,000 times, boom times in the heyday of commercial aviation. The company was busy setting speed records, flying between Honolulu and San Francisco and chartering flights to the Antarctic in support of U.S. Government research. Yes, we all know from “Mad Men,” it was a good time to fly.
With pilots logging more miles, Pan Am came to Rolex with a commission: to build a movement to track two time zones for their weary-eyed pilots. The result was the Caliber 1036, which then evolved into the Rolex GMT-Master, first sold publicly in 1954.
A decade later and helped by product placement in 1964’s “Goldfinger” on lead actress Honor Blackman’s wrist as Pussy Galore, the beauty and practicality of the design became lusted after, emerging as an icon worthy of ink by the barrel. In the decades since, the design has become one of the most coveted watch styles amongst collectors.
How They Work
Functionally speaking, GMT complications work quite simply, according to watchmakers inside Crown & Caliber, an online watch refurbisher and marketplace.
“There are several different ways a watchmaker can do it, but most have two hour hands, one rotates once a day, the other twice a day, then you can move them independently to keep track of time zones. There are other ways, but that’s the way most do it,” explains senior watchmaker Bryan Traylor. “Really what they’re doing is adding an extra wheel in the gears that enables you to keep track of two or more time zones.”
Beyond the Rolex GMT-Master and Master II — arguably the gold standard in GMT design, a watch so oversubscribed you could wait years to buy one new — there are lots of offerings of similar caliber to choose from. Here are  the five GMT watches we are loving right now:
Oris Aquis GMT
Tumblr media
“This new Baselworld 2019 release adheres to the well-established design language of the Aquis, but implements a GMT function in a creative and aesthetically pleasing manner,” says Paul Altieri, founder and CEO of Bob’s Watches. Thanks to the ceramic bezel insert on the Aquis GMT, which is laser-engraved with a 24-hour time scale, this GMT tracks three time zones simultaneously – one via the central hands; a second via the additional GMT central hand; and a third by aligning the bezel with the central hour hand. Pretty neat, and pretty affordable too.
$2,700 at Oris.ch

Nomos Tangomat GMT
Tumblr media
“[The Nomos Tangomat GMT is] quite clever and one of the simplest GMT designs you’ll find,” notes Hamilton Powell, CEO of Crown & Caliber. “You push a button on the side of the case to move the second hour hand back and forth — very elegant.” With their distinct lines, Nomos watches attract fans for their simplicity.
$4,920 at Tourneau.com
Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT SBGE015
Tumblr media
“This watch offers a highly unique and accurate movement (a spring drive), with some of the best finishing that Seiko has to offer,” explains Altieri. This GS comes with rotating bezel, screw down crown, GMT, power reserve display and is the finest examples of Japanese watchmaking you’ll find anywhere.
$6,324 at Chrono24.com
Omega Planet Ocean GMT
Tumblr media
“The Planet Ocean is one of Omega's most serious and purpose-built collections of dive watches, and this version adds GMT functionality, making it a perfect travel watch for whatever your travels may entail,” says Altieri. With a stainless steel 43.5mm case, blue bezel and transparent caseback, it’s on the higher end of things when it comes to size, but still a great example of a professional dive watch (300m depth capability) with GMT functionality.
$5,495 at BobsWatches.com
Tudor Black Bay GMT
Tumblr media
“Tudor just introduced this model at last year’s Baselworld and it’s a great example of beautiful design,” Traylor tells us. “It’s a watch that allows you to enjoy the thing that’s so beautiful about watches: their engineering.” Collectors have eyed this one since its release, particularly as Rolexes have moved up the price scale, as an affordable piece to own today, and a collectable for tomorrow.
$3,625 at TudorWatch.com
Watches are one of the last items in your life that remain mechanical — especially in 2019. This is one of the reasons those who appreciate fine timepieces gravitate toward chronographs and GMTs in the first place. Relish that.
Whether sitting in a meeting staring off into space or stepping off a plane somewhere brand new, it’s a tactile watch complication to play with — something to really savor. Their use and utility (plus they’re just really good looking complications) will make them desirable for years to come.

You Can Buy Tom Cruise’s ‘Cocktail’ Sunglasses Now
Tom Cruise's Sunglasses From Cocktail Are Back
Tom Cruise is by far one of the most famous actors in the world, so it makes sense that in the almost 40 years he has been working, there have been more than a couple iconic film moments. One of those was Cruise as bartender Brian Flanagan in 1988’s “Cocktail.” The film may be over 30 years old, but the shades he sported are still right on trend. So Persol, the company behind those iconic sunglasses, opened up its archives for a reboot of the classic PO3225S style.

Bigger, boxier, and the perfect shade of tortoiseshell, the style is perhaps lesser known than Persol’s foldable 714 style, which the brand rereleased last year in limited edition for the 50th anniversary of Steve McQueen’s iconic role in 1968’s "The Thomas Crown Affair.” But, seeing as the original worn by McQueen in the film were auctioned off for $70,000 in 2006, and the mere 350 pairs released last year are long gone, the rerelease of Cruise’s PO3225S style bring some satisfaction for film and style buffs.

It’s not just his role as Brian Flanagan that puts Cruise in the category of unofficial sunglass salesman. He has had quite a few parts that have left a lasting impression on our eyes — literally. See below for five more iconic sunglass styles made popular by Cruise’s films.
The Film: ‘Top Gun,’ 1986

About as iconic as you can get, Cruise as Maverick launched Ray-Ban Aviators from a design for optimal pilot function to one of the most iconic and universally flattering styles available.

The Style: Randolph Aviator
If Cruise is going to star in a film titled “American Made,” then it makes sense to pick American-made sunglasses. These are a timeless style with a smaller square lens shape that flatters just about every face.

The Film: ‘Mission: Impossible II,’ 2000

The Style: Oakley Fives Squared Rectangular
Undeniably a style of the late ‘90s, these glasses made Cruise look cool as hell flying through the fiery streets on his Triumph Speed Triple.
Tumblr media
$93 at Amazon.com
The Film: ‘Collateral,’ 2004
Tumblr media
IMDB
The Style: Silhouette TMA Icon 8698 6560
Certainly not as well known as the “Top Gun” shades, this shape is deserving of its style name: minimal. Lightweight and dark, these have a futuristic appeal without overdoing it.
Tumblr media
$350 at FramesDirect.com
The Film: ‘Risky Business,’ 1983
Tumblr media
MovieStillsDB
The Style: Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer
You didn’t think we were going to forget perhaps one of the most iconic sunglass styles in history, did you? Together, Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” Ray-Ban, and a relatively unknown Cruise created one of the most memorable scenes in movie history, solidifying Cruise’s spot on the A-List forever.

Watch Snob Dissects the In-House Movement
Watch Snob on In-House Movements and Classic Watches
You Don’t Forget the First Time
My first admiration to luxury watches was recently started upon receiving a Grand Seiko SBGJ219 as a gift from my wife. In fact that's the only luxury watch I have. As my passion grows, I found myself in the pre-owned watch markets, but I often get confused with the use of the term "in-house movement" which generally receives higher appreciation than ones with outsourced movements (Breitling may be the perfect example).
RELATED: Last Week: Watch Snob: Best Watches of Baselworld 2019
Although it is not always the case for brands such as Zenith or Grand Seiko that are reasonably priced, the assumption of non in-house movement watches received less appreciation can totally be misleading for brands such as Rolex Daytona 16520 with Zenith movement, Panerai Radiomir PAM 190 with Jaeger movement, or Montblanc with Minerva or any holy trinity watches with Caliber 920 supplied by Jaeger.
My questions are: Would it be significant to consider buying watch with in-house movement? Would it be poor judgement if I consider in-house movement the last priority? How could I justify in-house movement when buying pre-owned watches?
The whole in-house movement issue is an interesting one on so many levels. I suppose you could say that it matters, if it matters to you. Taken on its own, whether a movement is made in-house or not tells us little to nothing about the quality or inherent interest of a watch. You have only to look at how many different watches used variations on the Valjoux 72, or the Lemania CH27; some of them have as little to do with each other as chalk with cheese and yet technically they’re all using the same movement. Except, of course, they’re not. Different makers have done very different things with the same base movement, in terms of construction and finishing. The fact that Patek used the CH27 while Omega used another version of the same movement doesn’t diminish the value of what Patek historically added to the base caliber in terms of finish and construction.
Rolex makes its own movements, in-house, but that would not matter very much if they were not excellent movements.
In general, I would suggest evaluating watches on a case-by-case basis, rather than with the blunt instrument that is in-house vs. outsourced. Historically, most of the Swiss brands didn’t make their own movements anyway — Vacheron Constantin, for example, after World War II generally had its movements made by Jaeger-LeCoultre and did so until relatively recently, and the quality of its watches are none the worse for it.
You Can Go Both Ways
After having devoured your articles to gain an iota of horological knowledge, I’ve finally made it to a juncture of having to choose a watch. For me it will be an everyday watch for work and socialising, now as to the dilemma a Tudor Pelagos (LHD) or an Omega Speedmaster racing? I’m ambidextrous so can get away with either.
I think you will probably find the two watches more or less the same when it comes to sartorial versatility — they’re neither of them especially a dress watch although the Speedmaster Racing might be just a marginally better fit with business attire. It really depends on what kind of office you work in — increasingly, standards for dress in the workplace continue to drop and the notion of having to wear what used to be called a dress watch no longer really obtains (much of this is due to the pernicious influence of tech culture, but there is no turning back that particular tide of mediocrity).
Personally I have had, since it came out, rather a sneaking admiration for the Tudor Pelagos Left-Hand Drive. There is no reason whatsoever for me to especially like the watch as not only am I not left-handed, I am not even remotely ambidextrous (I am however an excellent juggler as well as reasonably good at sleight-of-hand for an amateur; Nature does not distribute her gifts equally).
RELATED: Best Rolex Watches for Men
However there is something about that one, quirky detail that I find strangely appealing. This is probably an inevitable consequence of age and too close attention to an article of connoisseurship; you find you can only be titillated by the outre.
Your Choice is Clear
It is my 29th birthday today and I told myself I would buy my first $4,000-to-$5,000 watch when I reach 30 (and before I get married). I would like to consult your wisdom as part of my due diligence.
I would like to ask your advice to make a good decision because I will not be able to afford another purchase of this amount for a long time as I'll be saving for the necessities — house, car, future family, etc. So let's just say I'm looking for a one-watch that will be my companion for at least the next five to 10 years.
I have a humble collection which I don't mind consolidating to fund the purchase. A Tudor Princedate as my daily, A Frederique Constant Slimline Moonphase to dress (as I can't afford a JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon yet) and an Oris BC3 when things get rugged.
I'm considering the following watches:
Omega Aqua Terra IWC Portofino Rolex OysterDate Spring Drive Grand Seiko Second Hand JLC Master Control
Would appreciate it if you have any other suggestions.
As much as all the watches you have listed have things to recommend them (well, there is some question about the Portofino at its current price and in its current incarnation) I am afraid I must do the obvious and suggest the Rolex.
You are essentially framing this question in terms of a single watch and while a Spring Drive Grand Seiko is a marvellous object, and an Omega Aqua Terra a technical tour de force, in terms of general every-day all ‘round wearability the Rolex is the game to beat.
Why? There is no single factor, just a combination of features that all together add up to a watch with quite a lot of unobtrusive excellence, including the wonderful bracelet and extremely high quality of fit and finish throughout. The only unfortunate thing about Rolex watches, are their ubiquity — the firm makes perhaps a million or so watches a year and if you want something that is less easily recognizable I would strongly suggest the Spring Drive as an alternative.
For all the Aqua Terra is an excellent watch technically, it lacks the ability to irrationally satisfy of the Rolex, and does not quite have the aesthetic impact of the best Spring Drives; your choice for a single best every-day watch is really — as it is increasingly these days — between Rolex and Grand Seiko; the best of Switzerland and Japan (in their categories) respectively.

How to Mix Up Different Spring Trends
AskMen Style Defined: Mathematics of an On-Trend Outfit
Here at AskMen, we strive to bring you new and interesting content to help answer any questions you may have from sex and dating to health and fitness and food and booze. And this eighth installment of our new weekly series AskMen Style Defined iAskMen Style Defineds all about reimagining an otherwise simple outfit.
RELATED: AskMen Style Defined Last Week: Liven Up a Basic Black Coat
As a New Jersey-native now living in New York City, Anthony Urbano didn’t set out to make a name for himself in the fashion industry when he started his blog Oh Antonio in 2011. He had planned on a much more traditional path when he began his career as a structural engineer designing buildings in Manhattan for a boutique firm.
“A lot of people are surprised when they find out I had such a technical job before I began my blog,” Urbano tells us. “I was always really into math. I took up to Calculus 4 and it was one of my favorite classes.”
So why the seemingly abrupt change in direction? “I didn't get to dress up at work so [fashion blogging] was a fun way to flex my style creativity to others,” he says about what was keeping his personal creative needs fulfilled. “I really led two separate lives.”
While the complexity of high-level mathematics and the combination of high-fashion menswear may seem like worlds apart, it’s not as surprising a swap at it may seem. Urbano went from designing and analyzing the foundation and structure of buildings to applying similar efforts to outfits. There is a surprising amount of mathematics that goes into dealing with proportions, patterns, and color palettes.
How does he put wardrobe mathematics to use with the outfit we selected this week? “I love playing with colors, prints, proportions, and mixing different styles, and this outfit does all of that, so it [visually] describes my style perfectly.”
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Anthony Urbano (@oh_anthonio) on Mar 14, 2019 at 9:52am PDT
“The blazer and jeans are both oversized and that’s a trend I'm really into,” he continues. “I think hoodies are my favorite layering piece during these transitional months, and wearing one under a blazer just seems like a more current and fresh way to style one. Bonus points for tie-dye — a huge trend the past few seasons. [I] love the color it adds to an otherwise neutral outfit.”
Keeping up with trends is important for Urbano. “I'm someone that likes to keep on top of the trends so obviously I look to the runway shows each season for inspo in what's current and trending,” he explains. And he is certainly confident when it comes to integrating those trends into his own personal style.
“I think [my style] is a little bit of that normcore/dadcore trend with the blazer and jeans combo and a chunky sneaker,” he says. “And wearing [them] oversized feels more intentional, so it's definitely making a style statement and doesn’t look random.”
RELATED: AskMen Style Defined: Business But Not as Usual
“New York has such a good vibe when the sun is out. I'm finally excited for the warm weather,” Urbano exclaims about winter finally coming to an end. What is he most excited about for spring? “Rooftop parties, running outside again, wearing my good sneakers because it's not always snowing out, and Coachella!”
Whether you’re inspired by the beautiful symmetry of a pinstripe jacket, or the relative uncertainty of a tie-dye hoodie, we know it doesn’t take Newton’s Method to find something to like when perusing through Urbano’s Instagram. You’re sure to find a continuous pattern of spring style satisfaction.

How Khakis Became Cool Again
Why Chinos Are the New Uniform of Success
When is the last time you wore a tie to work? Probably around the last time you used the word “haberdashery.” There’s a seismic style shift going on in the professional world and ascending through the ranks often doesn’t depend on wearing a suit. Even Wall Street titan Goldman Sachs has loosened up its dress code to make suits and ties optional, offering further proof that desk jockeys are changing their uniforms. Just look around your office — if you still even work in one.

These more democratic environments are a boon for flexibility everyone keeps talking about. But if there is one thing it can be bad for, it’s your style. Modern guys have more options than ever before, but all that freedom can easily lead to confusion. The solution? Create a wardrobe that looks sharp enough to impress but feels relaxed enough to move through your day-to-day with ease.
Entrepreneurs Jeff Kirschner and Ludwick Marishane have this down to a science. The ambitious duo were recently chosen as Dockers Challengers by the chino-championing brand for their innovative approach to making real changes in the world.
Kirschner, who founded a global litter-fighting app called Litterati, and Marishane, who invented the world’s first waterless body wash, DryBath, are always on the move and look great while they’re doing it.
“I love entrepreneurship because I don’t just do one thing,” says Kirschner, an Oakland, California, father of two whose days vary wildly. “I focus on product, the market, community. I get to dabble in a lot of different areas so I get to exercise my brain in new ways.”
Both Kirschner and Marishane appreciate the importance of how their clothes function. “The clothes you wear affect your mood and your mindset — and your approach to work,” says the South Africa-based Marishane, who regularly interacts with schools, governments, and NGOs to implement his groundbreaking invention.
They may live a world apart, but both of these inspiring men start with a foundation of chinos for their foolproof, comfortable looks that are always appropriate no matter where the day takes them. See how these pants can work for you, too.

The Daily Grind
Tumblr media
Traditionally, work and life were more compartmentalized. In the old days, you were apt to change out of your work clothes and into an after-hours look. But the modern reality is a work-life integration that is much more fluid. Whether you go to a traditional office, rent a space, or work from home, those worlds can shift quickly and you’ll need to roll with the rhythm.
One solution is to create a versatile default uniform for your run-of-the-mill days when you’ve got bigger things to think about than your outfit. “My goal is not to make a lot of decisions — and what I wear is part of that,” says Marishane. “I prefer to wear a uniform throughout the week.”
Jeans can quite often look a little too casual. Both entrepreneurs start with a classic beige pair of chinos with a solid T-shirt that hits right at the hip. “I think the traditional color works best because it’s really versatile,” says Kirschner. “You can wear them with any color and it takes the guesswork out of getting dressed.”
Need another layer? A soft chambray shirt goes with everything. Even if you’ve been sitting at the coffee shop with your laptop, hunched over in a cubicle, or running around town getting supplies, you’ll always look clean and neat. Lastly, a simple, classic sneaker can ground the look without sacrificing that laid-back feeling.
We recommend:
Mack Weldon Pima Crew T-Shirt, $20 at Mackweldon.com
Madewell Chambray Shirt, $80 at Madewell.com
Dockers Alpha Supreme Flex Khakis, $80 at Dockers.com
Common Projects Sneakers, $460 at MrPorter.com
The Office Meeting
Tumblr media
You may think you’re impressing, but clients and colleagues can probably see through overdressing. “I like being in a suit,” says Kirschner. “But it’s not practical. It also might alienate who I’m meeting with.”
One of the best pieces of advice he ever got was from one of his former investors was “Dress for equal.” Translation: If you’re going to give a talk to 5th graders, dress on the same level. If you go to J.P. Morgan, you’ll want to add a tailored element. “In chinos, you can do that no matter what,” says Kirshner. “They’re always appropriate.”
Kirschner’s go-to chinos are Dockers Supreme Flex in a slimmer fit because of their flattering shape and comfortable feel. “I’m not a skinny jeans guy, but these have a tailored, tapered feel to them,” he says of his favorite pants. “I have a pair of dark jeans that I used to wear all the time, but they’re so rigid. After having discovered the feel of stretch khakis, it’s tough to decide to put those less comfortable jeans on.”
Extending the relaxed vibe to his whole look, Kirschner prefers to keep his shirt untucked. The key is making sure the bottom of the shirt doesn’t fall lower than your hip.
We recommend:
J.Crew Untucked Secret Wash Shirt, $59.50 at JCrew.com
J.Crew Ludlow Slim-fit Jacket, $300 at JCrew.com
Dockers All Seasons Tech Jean Cut Pants, $58 at Dockers.com
To Boot Suede Chukka Boots, $325 at ToBoot.com

The All-Eyes-on-You Presentation
Tumblr media
Getting up in front of a room and pitching your big idea takes confidence, so your clothes should look sharp and have a flattering fit so you know you look your best. Wearing a pattern or color you’re not entirely at ease with will just end up damaging your self-assurance.
“How I feel is most important,” says Kirschner, who has given hundreds of presentations and talks (including a TED Talk viewed more than 1.3 million times) since launching Litterati in 2012. “It doesn’t just mean comfort. I have to love the way it looks and feels. It bolsters my confidence. I will present better.” His default look is an always approachable solid sweater worn with an oxford shirt and a crisp pair of chinos.
One important point not to overlook: Since you may be standing in front of the room, this is no time to roll up long inseams or to try to conceal a bulky shirt that’s drowning your torso in excess fabric. Your clothing should not distract from your message.
“The length and fit has to be right,” adds Marishane, who, at a lanky 6-foot-3, is obsessed with finding the right inseam — and you should be, too. For most men, pant hems should fall below your natural ankle and skim the top of your shoes if you plan to show off some creative sock patterns.
We recommend:
White Heavy Oxford Soft Ivy Button Down, From $19.75 at Amazon.com
Ted Baker Textured Crew Sweater, $175 at TedBaker.com
Dockers Alpha Khaki Pants with 360 Flex, $55 at Dockers.com
Cole Haan Mens 2 Zerogrand Laser Wingtip Oxford Shoes, From $149 at Amazon.com
The Travel Day
Tumblr media
If you’re hopping off a plane and headed straight to a meeting, aim for breathable layers you can add or subtract to adjust for temperature changes.
Start with a fine-gauge cotton knit or a moisture-wicking shirt to keep your top half dry and comfortable. Then, extend the same ease to your lower half with stretch trousers in a fabric that regulates your temperature. A good pair of 5-pocket chinos made with all-season tech fabric keep you warmer in cool temperatures and let the steam out when the weather starts to heat up.
“Jeans aren’t very breathable, but lightweight pants are,” says Marishane. Darker colored chinos help conceal any unexpected stains encountered in transit.
But it’s not just about how the pieces feel — it’s also how they move through the hurdles of the day. “I need comfort but also the simplicity when crossing security checks,” adds Marishane. So he skips a belt and adds a lightweight, unlined tailored jacket or bomber layered on top.
Finally, the right slip-on shoes not only feel comfy and are easy to slip on and off on the security line. The athletic grip helps when you need to run to your gate or to your next meeting.
We recommend:
Uniqlo Dry Ex Polo Shirt, $29.90 at Uniqlo.com
Banana Republic Cotton Sweater Blazer, $149 at BananaRepublic.com
Dockers All Season Tech Pants,  $58 at Dockers.com
Vans Textured Suede Slip-on Sneakers, $60 at Vans.com
As workplaces get more and more casual, it can be a slippery slope as to what works and what doesn’t. But once you add chinos to your daily rotation, you’re sure to be safe no matter where the day lands you.

Watch Snob Struggles to Find Notable Watches at Baselworld
Watch Snob: Best Watches of Baselworld 2019
The tents have been folded and the circus that was Baselworld 2019 has crept out of town for another year. For the Snob, it was a rather bittersweet affair. I have been fortunate enough to attend the show yearly for the better part of two decades, and to see it in its current rather sad condition is an occasion for mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is most depressing to observe the show’s apparently unstoppable shrinkage — until recently there were 2,000 or more exhibitors but this year, there were a paltry 500 or so, with the Swatch Group the most notable absence.
RELATED: Last Week: Watch Snob: Who Makes the Best High-End Chronograph?
On the other hand, there is an undeniable feeling that the show and the city are both somewhat caught in a cleft stick of their own cutting. Years of predatory pricing for not just stands at the fair, but also for hotels and restaurants, combined with an almost complete disregard for basic amenities, have left both visitors and exhibitors with the feeling that the MCH Group (which runs Baselworld and Art Basel) hold them in casual contempt.
The drastic reduction in exhibitors and a corresponding drop in attendees gave the show something of a ballroom-at-three-in-the-morning-on-New-Years feel. And it may have had something to do with the near-universal sentiment that this was a decidedly uninspiring year.
Rolex introduced nothing new, instead producing variations on existing models — we were treated to a less-exciting Rainbow Day-Date (a bit of a let-down after last year’s Rainbow Daytona) a meteorite dial GMT Master, and a two-tone Sea-Dweller (among other things) all of which will undoubtedly sell well, but none of which rise to the level of excitement Rolex fans had hoped for. A Batman GMT-Master II on a Jubilee bracelet doesn’t quicken the pulse either.

Tudor also produced a new two-tone model, with the Black Bay Chronograph in steel and gold (again, appealing on a certain level, perhaps, but certainly not the new Black Bay that many fans felt they had been led to believe would be unveiled) and instead, we endured the Black Bay P01 – a very odd watch lifted from the Tudor archives, which has at best a very niche appeal.
Patek Philippe’s most talked about watch was probably the new 5520 Travel Alarm, which was, indeed, alarming, with its four very prominent crowns; for all that it is almost certainly a very fine watch from a craftsmanship standpoint, the almost insectoid profile that the crowns and lugs produced will at the very least take some getting used to. A khaki green dial Aquanaut, seems … well, one hardly knows what to say; commercial but unexciting; and the new 5212A Weekly Calendar in steel carried away the palm as the most interesting watch of the lot, at least for enthusiasts.
There were, however, two world’s records set during the show, which should not be forgotten. We had, first of all, from Bulgari, the debut of something really interesting: the world’s thinnest self-winding chronograph (the Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic) which broke a record which had stood since 1987, when the F. Piguet 1185 was introduced. The second world’s record was for accuracy — why Citizen does not make a bit more noise about their Eco-Drive caliber 0100 wristwatch, I have no idea but it is accurate to within ±1 second per year. That is a record that seems unlikely to be broken for the foreseeable future.
RELATED: How to Avoid Buyer’s Remorse With Watches
It says something about this year’s edition of Baselworld, however, that the fate of the show is a more interesting story than many or even most of the watches released. As a trade show more or less purely for the trade, its days are clearly numbered. While Rolex and Patek Philippe are confirmed for next year, Breitling’s CEO, Georges Kern, has been adamant that they will not return and the LVMH Group has made no formal commitment to return either.
Perhaps the most telling fact is that for actual wristwatch customers, the demise of Baselworld would make little to no difference in how they learn about and decide to purchase wristwatches, which must change if the show is to continue to exist at all.
