ofmargaery
For so long there had been nothing she wanted more than to make her grandmother proud and she still wanted it but in that moment she knew all she wanted was retribution for her mother’s death. It was a far cry from her usual view on life and so she reined in her emotions just as she usually would, except this time it was for reasons opposite to those she was used to. Generally she knew she was prone to initial soft-heartedness ( even if logic did always win out ) but this time it was nothing of the sort. “I don’t know any of them as well as I’d like but I’m not convinced that even if I did I’d trust them any more. The only ones I would count on would be the ones who lost someone too. They have something to gain and perhaps their desire for revenge will make them act.”
Nod of assent was given when she was close enough with Robb after their university days and even if it had only been one meeting, she had liked Lyanna enough. It wasn’t quite trust but she could perhaps have some faith in them. “I agree with the Starks, especially due to their connection to Lysa. The Vipers could be an asset, I know Arianne well although Oberyn can be somewhat unpredictable. Perhaps the River Kings too.” She paused, considering if there was anything else to add and without entirely meaning to, soft words slipped from her lips. “I want to leave them with nothing, so that they can never touch us again.” A confession that she wasn’t even sure she had wanted until it had hovered in the air.

there was so much olenna wanted to teach her granddaughter before letting the young woman take the reigns, but olenna feels desperate and she knows margaery wants to prove herself.  ‘ you’ll have to get to know them if you are to be in my position someday, ’  she advises,  ‘ learn what motivates them, learn what is in their best interests, learn their psychology. you have to be five steps ahead, and tragically we haven’t noticed they’ve pulled ahead. ’
olenna takes a deep breath, considering what margaery tells her. it’s like one big game of chess, laying out the pieces and determining who would take what position and why. if margaery can convince the younger members, olenna can take meetings with the heads. she was right, all of them have lost in some way that night, it could be a unifier.  ‘ oberyn lost a child, i’m sure he wouldn’t mind striking back. and if i can’t get to edmure, we can try catelyn --- she can be convincing. ’  she barely bats an eye at her words, feeling a warmth bloom in her chest.  ‘ just my sentiments, my darling. ’

a trail of cigar smoke escapes from the seal of her lips as she holds the vintage cuban in her lungs a little longer. it’s smooth going in but prickles at the edges of her chest, settling in like a temperamental beast laid to rest. she exhales and watches as the puff dissipates into the evening, the smell of it fragrant but not too strong on the open balcony she had gone off to. olenna raises a glass of cognac to her lips, stopping midway when she sees movement out of the corner of her eye.  ‘ if you’re trying to sneak around me, think again, ’  she says.  ‘ i may be old but i’m still of perfect health --- vision and all. ’

perhaps under different circumstances, olenna would have found some kinship in cersei. she always did like a woman with power, but not when it overshadowed hers. call it pride, call it jealousy, olenna simply did not like it when her own plans went awry, least of all by a golden wrench thrown into the gears of her operation. she had never liked tywin, no amount of politicking will ever make it seem like she did, and it appears to be that extended to his daughter as well.
olenna likes to believe she can see through the politician’s wife facade the lioness has going on, afterall she’d dealt with the likes of women hungry for power  ( power for themselves, power for their husbands, power for their children )  for most of her life. but cersei --- in the short time of her reign not only had she kept the lannister / tyrell rivalry alive, she had also slighted the tyrells not once, but twice. olenna didn’t like to play to get even, that was too simple. she played to win.
the fates had set their scene in this humble diner, olenna and cersei the lead players of two influential families. with a nod they could easily do away with the other, but suffer tremendous consequences. it is only the sanctity of civility that holds her back. she scoffs and moves to take the seat across from her, expression hard and lips scowling.  ‘ you say that like i have a stake regarding your husband beyond a $500 wager with some of my men. ’  she leans back,  ‘ no, i’m here for you. ’

oftybolt
Nod of acknowledgement was given, old habits died hard even in the dark. “Of course.”  He made sure that the words were warm so that even though there was no way of seeing his features, there’s no mistaking his intentions. “We all have to help one another, don’t we?” While he did always want the Iron Bank to come out on top, he’d never been against each faction existing together and working alongside one another from time to time. It was a competitive world but he’d never been one to bay for blood or seek to be entirely independent. One was only as strong as their allies.
As a politician he was used to adjusting his way of delivering news accordingly and while with others he might have sugarcoated it, he suspected that Olenna Tyrell was someone who would appreciate being told something straight. “I thought about it and the simple answer is nothing good.” His mind was strategic enough that he knew it was only really himself that could be counted a fighter and even then words were always a stronger suit of his. But he knew how to compromise and so he flicks his lighter on once more, allowing them to search for something to arm themselves with. “But it wouldn’t hurt to see what we can find. Something heavy might do the trick.”
olenna thought it would be in poor taste to roll her eyes, tybolt did help to protect her just now. but olenna did not like being patronized even if he has genuine intentions. however, seeing as the lannister’s consigliere now had her in a room to himself, she would be surprised if he didn’t seize the opportunity. olenna knew a lot of men like tybolt, hungry and cunning, and she was a woman of high standing and power with a lot of connections. he’s a good enough politician to know she could help his career in many ways.
‘ mn, ’  she hums,  ‘ i should let you know then i’m not much of a fighter. they had me certified for a handgun a few decades ago but seeing as those things were confiscated at the start, i’m afraid i’m useless in the case of danger. ’  olenna does take a look at their surroundings, the shelves lined up with heavy volumes, only really useful if she throws them at assailants. the vases look priceless but have floral arrangements in them and the mess of them dumping them out would be theirs to deal with until someone came for them. in the corner of the room, she spots a brass candelabra  ( tywin, always a slave to gaudy dramatics ) about the length of her forearm. she picks it up and handles it, the weight enough to cause serious damage and could be easily swung. she holds it out to tybolt.  ‘ light the candles and we’ll use it as a weapon if someone comes. ’

never did mace believe he would be in this sort of position. he once believed they would be like the couple who pass away moments from each other — even joking about who is going to take their last breath first. the jokes feel lost, unforgiving, cruel. and now he was, alone without her by his side. the least he could do was give her a peaceful and quiet funeral — no matter how hard this day was.
time will heal all — eventually. soon, this pain will go. least that’s what he’s told. as of today, right now, that doesn’t seem to be a possibility. he took a deep breath, glancing up at his mother. “ i — am not sure. i’m just thinking of her. of what she would be saying with all of this. of how — she would be doing if the roles were reverse. ” alerie was always the stronger one of the two.
anyone could see that mace and alerie loved each other, it wasn’t some well kept secret or some publicity stunt created to make the tyrells seem more relatable. they genuinely loved one another and made each other happier. and as much as olenna couldn’t relate to that, she always supported mace. always liked alerie.
she tries to think of how he must be feeling. while mina’s death had affected her so greatly, it was different from losing a spouse. someone who you chose to spend the rest of your days with and loved so dearly. olenna cared for luthor, but their marriage was one of opportunity and understanding. there was love but love out of a mutual respect for one another that only grew after years of being together.  ‘ i’m sure she’d be just as heartbroken, ’  she tells him,  ‘ she’d tell me how much she loves you, how much she misses you, how much she’d wonder what you would do if it were her. but she’d be strong for your children, darling. ’

thedesmera
There was nothing Desmera could say and she knew that, Olenna being right at every turn. It was why she admired her so much, tried si hard to please her in everything she could. Being humble and admitting she was wrong did not came easily for the Redwyne, but there was one person who could get it out of her easier than others and it was her dear grandmother. “You’re right, Lysa would be a better target than Baelish.” With Mina gone, and still where she stood before her death, part of Desmera was starting to feel lost, without an anchor to held her grounded. “As always, your level head and cunning mind has so much to teach me.” Glass risen to her lips, the smile on her face is genuine. “Should we find our table?”
she assumes it must be difficult for desmera, well aware that the girl wants to prove herself. olenna wants it too, wants her granddaughter to succeed and to be able to stand on her own with smart decisions. it’s what she’s always wanted for her children and her grandchildren. she wants to know that she’ll be leaving the citadel in good hands. her own meticulous nature is one she wants to hammer into desmera and into margaery both, as it could help them a lot in the long run.  ‘ if you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles, ’  she quotes.  ‘ get to know the other patrons tonight. if anything this wedding has offered up an opportunity to study the other families. ’  olenna offers an easy smile in return,  ‘ that sounds lovely, at least once dinner begins i’ll have the excuse of food in my mouth to not have to talk to balon for another second. ’

weren’t weddings meant to be a celebration, not a devastation? mace and alerie once joked about dying. how one day they would be the fun in funeral but there is nothing fun with losing your other half, something that mace has learned, something he wishes none of his kids have to know. when his younger sister died, he was able to disappear for a day, let her death sink in then reemerge the same as he once was. this was vastly different. there was no hiding when his kids lost their mother, no reemerging with the idea that the day will began bright and shiny as it once was. no. this day was cloudy, a day fit for a funeral.
“ hm? ” time has lost all meaning. he’s not sure how long he’s been holding up an old photo, his favorite of the two of them. it was taken on their second — third? alerie is — was better at remember the little details. getting used to describing her in the past tense? that’s still something he’s trying to get used to. “ ah. yes. yes, of course. i’ll — be right there. go on and start without me. ” was he trying to avoid the inevitable? perhaps.
.
olenna is not immune to devastation, only a few short months ago did she face one of the worst in losing her eldest child. and while she would be terribly distraught if luthor were to go, she knew that pain would not be comparable to how mace must be feeling. olenna knew her children; knew the way mace looked at alerie. this was difficult. devastating. absolutely unimaginable.
she pities him and stays patient. it’s not wise to have him alone, not before they were going to see alerie one last time. olenna excuses the rest of the party to leave for the cemetery first so she could be with him. so she could talk to him.  ‘ mace, what’s going through your mind ? ’

Drawing strength from her family was no new thing to her, she just hadn’t expected that she wouldn’t be able to find solace in her mother so soon. There were hundreds of conversations and interactions that they’d still to have, what ifs plagued her and that was perhaps was she was taking the hardest. The loss of the years that she’d thought she would have had weighed heavily on her but the contact from her grandmother soothed some of the ache. She was incredibly grateful to still have Olenna in her life. Both for the advice she gave and the comfort that was taken solely from her presence. Smile touched her lips as she acquiesced, slipping with smooth grace into the seat beside her grandmother. “I’m still here, I’ll be fine.” There was a firmness in her tone, reassuring herself as much as the older woman. She was grieving and hurting but it was far from the end of her nor would the loss break her.
It was hard not to let her emotions cloud her judgement. She had always been so flawless at balancing head and heart but now her craving for retribution - an uncharacteristic desire for blood - threatened to overwhelm her good sense. Rosy lips pressed together slightly after her grandmother’s words, reining in that rash need to demand that they lash out immediately. She wasn’t about to suggest a needless loss of life simply to avenge one, as much as she wanted swift results. “Do we turn to our allies for this? We weren’t the only ones who lost someone.” Perhaps that had been Cersei’s mistake, truly giving so many of them something to unite over, even if she wasn’t sure just who could be counted on at that moment. “Though I’m not sure I truly trust any of them but do we put trust in their want of revenge too?”

family was always a large part of olenna’s life, a tangible symbol of her legacy and all that she had done. her children and her children’s children were proof of her success and if the citadel fell tomorrow at the very least she’d know each one of them could stand on their own. she sees a great future in margaery’s eyes, so young and already taking the steps to make the matriarch proud. she only hopes this heartbreak makes her stronger, like a sword tempered by a flame.  ‘ good, ’  she replies.
olenna leans away and takes margaery’s hand with both of hers.  ‘ we’ll have to take stock of not only who benefits the most from the lannisters’ demise, but also who is daring enough to go after them. their business, like ours, runs deep in the city. and their alleigance to the baratheons puts them in a position of power and strength that is difficult to match. ’  she usually thinks of these things in her own head, but now that her granddaughter was to take over, two minds are better than one.  ‘ i believe we can trust the starks. ned’s temperament has always erred on the way of honorable. perhaps the martells can be convinced. maybe even the arryns, although we’ll have to see who’s leading them first. ’  olenna never does this but she asks anyway,  ‘ what do your thoughts, dear ? ’

it’s always a question of who knows her based on her family name or not — a solid reason why arya hardly ever introduces herself as arya stark. it’s usually just arya. letting that be all strangers know — though, considering the fact that she’s talking to olenna tyrell, she’s certain the other would know her through her first name alone. it’s odd to think about how much she cares about her family and how much she seeks to distance herself from them at the same time. but she’s here, an active member of her family. isn’t that enough? “ mmm. these are great tips. if i were ever to become a thief. not that i would. ever. nope. ” did she do a good job at being convincing? arya thinks so.
a small smirk crossed her face as she pulled her dress away to show the shoes of her choosing. “ i mean, does this count? i might — not have negotiated this but like. what she doesn’t know isn’t going to hurt her. ” though she would have rocked a pantsuit. a thought for next time. once her aunt was brought up, eyes moved around the room to see if she could spot the gushing bride — if one could call her aunt that. “ yeah. thrilled. beetlejuice or baelick or whatever his name is, is a stand up dude. love him. ” who does she dislike more? rhaegar or baelish? it’s a close one.
.
ned stark would have a cow if he knew olenna was giving his youngest daughter advice on how to be better at dubious activities. although, what is she doing that he’s not already allowing, having her be an initiated member of the family. regardless, filling this girl up with an arsenal of practical knowledge is how she’s going to thrive in this world in addition to filling this girl up with an arsenal. olenna thinks she could be great with a little strategic knowledge --- maybe she should teach her how to play chess next.
olenna raised an eyebrow at arya’s shoes, a pair of worn-in sneakers squeaking back at her.  ‘ cute, ’  olenna comments,  ‘ i’m practical to heels myself but to each their own. as long as you’re comfortable in your skin. ’  she laughs, out loud this time.  ‘ yes, your new uncle petyr is truly a character. ’

for a second olenna wonders what she’s supposed to do. she even looks about the room and at her secretary for an answer before turning back at her.  ‘ dear elinor, ’  she begins, tone a little dismissive.  ‘ do you need a physician ? or an aspirin ? ’  olenna was never put in the position to take care of elinor before, the girl being one of luthors’ relatives, but her having the tyrell name was enough for olenna to at least pay attention to her.

sadly, the only thing broken was that incontinent troll’s nose. -- arya
she almost breaks into laughter but settles on chuckling as she pours arya a cup of tea. the young woman could always be kept around for a good story, the woes of being young in this day and age without much of a care in the world. arya was charming in the way olenna found amusing, sitting back and lacing her fingers together over her stomach, still smiling.  ‘ i’m surprised you reached his face. i would have thought you’d aim for something lower. ’

she sends a look over at her son. as well meaning as he tried to be sometimes it wasn’t up to her standard. olenna furrows her brow and waited for an explanation or at the very least an excuse.  ‘ how many times have i told you to think carefully before you speak ? ’  she scolds. it seems no matter how old mace is, olenna would continue to lecture him about the smallest of things as if he was still the small boy bumbling around her home.

i have never lied to you. and i will never lie to you.
her stare is cold as ice, chilling as it bears into margaery, unamused. she says she had never lied but on the contrary, olenna’s simmering paranoia tells otherwise. it’s difficult to be suspicious of your own blood, every maternal instinct inside of you fighting against it, never fathoming the betrayal. it’s worse than death, she thinks. but if she was to be bested by anyone, she would be at the very least bested by someone she trusted so much. she’ll let margaery have it this time. ‘ alright, ’  she finally drawls, setting down her playing cards on the table,  ‘ i fold. ’

    lucifer sentence starters     episode 4 - 6.
you broke into my house?
you were taking forever in the shower.
are you sleeping with this idiot?
never been thrown out of anywhere before in my life.
something very disturbing’s just happened. it’s horrific, really. for the second time, i’ve been thrown out of a woman’s house.
i mean, i appeal to the virile urge in all wo/men.
you need to go undercover, because you’re our best way in.
why is she able to refuse my charms?
people don’t have power over us. we give it to them. you have to take your power back.
i need to take back control. i need to behave like i always have.
i mean, it seems obvious now, actually - i need to have sex with her.
are you gonna help me or not?
you’re quite adorable when you’re flustered.
i’m not flustered, i’m nauseous.
okay, look. let me make myself perfectly clear: i will never, ever, ever sleep with you.
playing hard to get? i like it.
wow. you’ve never been rejected by a woman, have you?
the odds are definitely in your favour out there - probably not batting for the same team, but you never know. go forth and conquer. i know you want to.
i promise, if anyone here hurt your sibling, i’ll find them. and i’ll punish them.
if you weren’t so pent-up sexually, we’d be firing on all cylinders, i’d say.
i certainly don’t need any help getting wo/men into bed.
do you honestly think you can just ask people to have sex with you and they will?
you forget. i love pain.
men - they always want to talk!
we can get him/her back to where s/he belongs, if you could just provide me with a weak spot.
seriously, darling. are you well? the berries are ripe and ready to be harvested - i mean, look at me.
don’t. please.
if i get an STD from this thing, i’m gonna kill you.
is there anyone you suspect that might do this to you?
do not shush me.
a deal’s a deal - especially one with the devil.
i do believe there’s good and evil and right and wrong.
does it scare you?
i mean, how could i be scared of something i don’t believe in?
do i scare you?
either way, he’s going to get someone killed. probably himself.
this love thing makes you all quite stupid, doesn’t it?
just hand over the cash, and no one gets hurt.
i believe that’s a fair request, actually, so just pop her around and the money’s yours.
greedy little jackal, aren’t you?
what is it about you and guns, eh?
what’s up, jackass?
hell truly hath no fury like a woman scorned.
i happen to be an expert on punishment, and i’m not sure it fits the crime here.
chlamydia, the clap, a raging case of crabs - that’s what you deserve. not death.
why do humans think they can rectify one evil with another?
why does everyone say that before they’re punished?
come on, shoot me.
son of a bitch, that really hurts!
i don’t bleed!
i don’t lie. but i don’t always tell the whole truth.
can’t sleep when you’re not home.
the models don’t appear to be wearing any clothes.
you were shot and you bled. no sharp objects until we find out why.
the danger of getting hurt is positively thrilling.
now come on, tell me your most dangerous desire.
we need to get out of here now.
i am dreamy, but try to contain yourself.
i got a taste of danger, and i want more.
that whackjob’s gonna totally get me killed.
tomato, tom-ah-to.
see, that’s why we make such great partners - the ‘he said, she said’ of it all.
when do i get my own gun?
i wouldn’t trust you with my kid’s lightsaber.
if i’m gonna be forced to work with you again, i call the shots.
bloody hell! that hurt! do it again.
you know, i’m quite skilled in restraints.
let me guess, you did him a favour.
i process tragedy through my work.
that favour you owe me… i’m calling in my IOU.
i was trying to prevent more death.
well, aren’t we the little saint?
you are the oldest young person i’ve ever met.
i’m not gonna drink at a bar where everyone hates me.
did you ever consider that they hate you for that very reason?
well, somebody’s not being crowned homecoming queen, are they?
surely you’ve heard the expression ‘deal with the devil’…?
people come to me to ask for favours and more often than not, i’m happy to oblige.
i don’t need your sympathy, but thank you.
firstly, let me state that i’m in no way standing up for my associate, but on behalf of myself, and only myself, i think you’re a complete sack of arse.
sadly, the only thing broken was that incontinent troll’s nose.
if i’m not going to look out for you, who will? hm?
maybe next time, i won’t be around to save your ass.
you and my backside used to get on well.
is it my thanks you want, or a kiss?
i don’t do favours for guys like you.
what is it with the men in my life?
act like a child, get treated like a child.
witnesses said they heard you making threats at the door.
no wonder he can’t get it up.
so you’re just gonna sit around and wait for revenge? that’s rather lazy.
i was promised a gang war, and instead, i get a crybaby. this is boring.
you know, they really don’t make bad guys like they used to.
after five years behind bars, a brothel would be my go-to.
i can’t be held responsible for what happens after i give someone a favour.
if there’s one thing the devil knows, it’s that people need to take responsibility for their own bad behaviour.
enough danger for you yet?
you do remember that bullets hurt, right?
you had your hero moment. stay down, or you’re gonna get shot.
ass saved. you’re welcome.
you’re addicted to creating chaos and seeing where the chips fall, to hell with the consequences.
you’re having another one of those ‘gut feelings’, aren’t you?
you’ve already wasted so much of your life.
oh, well the good news is that whilst all dogs go to heaven, you’d be surprised how many pigs are waiting for you in hell.
you were never as good as me.
keep your enemies close, right?
who gave that order?
if you come clean now, i’ll go easy on you.
if you really want to do something, you should.
shall we move the party upstairs?
so what unpleasantness felled this heap of unrealised ambition then?
let’s pretend for one second that you’re someone else - someone nice. someone mature.
i mean, getting murdered is probably the most exciting thing that ever happened to him.
i gave up an epic foursome to be here.
call me when you’ve got a murder with a pulse - or at least someone good-looking.
i was hoping for a good shag just as a palate cleanser to wipe the foul taste of boredom from my mouth.
i need your help like i need a third boob.
- knew that was a mistake the moment it came out of my mouth.
i’ll have two tropic wonders and your face smashed into the ground.
i believe they call this interrogating!
we were like fish and chips - salt and pepper - hipsters and condescension!
if we’re gonna work together on this, you’re gonna have to trust me.
nobody steals from me and gets away with it.
he’s not gonna change.
i thought you said lying was a bad thing.
you’re not from around here, are you?
you can’t just smash two people together like barbies and think that that’s gonna fix things.
pardon the intrusion, you village people rejects, but one of you has stolen something that belongs to me.
please identify yourself, so i can punish you accordingly.
i thought we were past you thinking you’re invincible?
a few bad apples shouldn’t paint us all in a bad light, now should it?
you like being considered a criminal, don’t you?
he’s hiding something. we need to force it out of him.
i’ve sat in a parked car and not had sex.
have i done something to offend you?
ooh, whip out the cuffs then.
why shy away from a little bondage fun?
despite all your weirdness, i actually really like working with you.
i have never lied to you. and i will never lie to you.
been a while since i had a good hunt.
you’d never lie to me, right?
stick within the limits of your intellectual capacity.
why do they blame me for all their little failings?!

thedesmera
All Desmera could hope was for the rest of the evening to be less boring than the actual wedding and the promise of alcohol was actually helping a little. “Are you suggesting that he didn’t marry her out of love?” The words were said with fake shock as if anyone had any doubts of the contrary. Well, maybe Lyssa thought it was love, but anyone with half a brain cell could see the truth. Petyr wanted power and he would not get this high in any other family. Desmera’s eyes darkened as she listened to her grandmother shut down her idea of finding this new alliance useful. Of course, she didn’t trust Petyr and would not give him vital information about anything. But the Arryns had resources and knowing how to appeal to Petyr’s vain side could help them. “There’s a difference between trusting someone and using them,” she said, eager to prove Olenna she wasn’t as green as some seemed to think. “Someone can be useful without getting the full picture. Even just insinuating things about the Lannisters through their media could be of help.” Olenna’s approbation and love was something Desmera was always seeking and nothing fueled her more than knowing the older woman found her important to their family. Desmera wanted the best for them and she was ready to do almost anything to give it to Olenna.
Tumblr media
olenna only gave a noncommittal shrug, raising a glass of wine to her lips. it was no secret among the higher circles that petyr baelish is a social climber --- and a good one at that. olenna recognizes that game; told him to his face, even, that she admired his great ambition despite how the man swung like a pendulum only for himself. she presses her mouth together into a thin line as she listened to desmera make her case. with a patient yet hard stare, she explains,  ‘ i’m not saying we can’t use him, just that i know him well enough to know that that favor won’t be so easily won. i’m not looking for the tyrells to be indebted to baelish of all people. there would need to be something that he can benefit from. if we were to use the media, i would ask lysa for that favor. she’s far more predictable. ’
