I don’t think adding nonbinary to Victorian’s gender system would’ve fixed their weird sexism. If anything I think it would’ve made them weirder and sexismier

my favorite thing about Corporal Carrot is that he’s a romantic hero plopped right in the middle of the greediest cesspit of a chaotic neutral city ever to debase the pages of literature, and yet instead of having his shining idealism destroyed by an uncaring reality, he makes reality embarrassedly put down the weapons and agree to make nice, and then mutter an awkward “Good morning” whenever it passes him on the street.

Well, OK, the Suck Fairy hit Queen of Wands a bit. I forgot the comic starts dropping R words if you get far enough in. Sigh.

hatchery work is so funny to me bc if you eat a wild caught alaskan salmon there’s real life nonzero chance that I put its egg in a bucket, covered it in milt (salmon semen) and stirred it all together with my bare hands. and now ur eating it. idk what that makes us to each other but don’t forget it

I am genuinely so worried for all the young horny dykes going into adulthood thinking there's something "problematic" / "wrong" with them for being horny because fucking tiktok lesbians think any horny dyke content is "male gaze fetishitic"

“i don’t know what to do with myself”
“find more hobbies!”
yes, having passions is important for filling time but also having the freedom to do so depends on both time and financial ability.
it’s a privilege to be able to engage in your interests.

There's that post that goes around about how famous globetrotting detective is a job that only exists in fiction, but it's actually weird that it doesn't exist IRL, right? Like, you'd think that if nothing else a century plus of stories about famous detectives would create enough demand for such a person that sooner or later someone would manage to fill it. Maybe the problem is that you'd have to be so good at solving cases that it would be impossible for any actual person to accomplish. Like, the public would expect 99% clearance rates and no one could ever manage that, even a genius working under ideal circumstances

The things I personally spend most of my time on are: internet stuff (not really a hobby), reading, calligraphy, drawing, connect the dots books, knitting/crochet, going on walks, and listening to podcasts. Oh, and board and card games when I'm not by myself. Not all of that is cheap, and some of it takes up space.
I think there is something to be said for evaluating the cost of hobbies in terms of cost per (for instance) hour of enjoyment or per year you expect to be able to use the stuff or whatever -- for instance buying a guitar and learning to play it is going to cost money up front, but if it occupies time that would instead get used for paying $5 here and $5 there on a free (contains in app purchases) app or something, it might be cheaper in the long run, for somebody who has the money to spend up front. Vimes boots theory etc etc.
Granted, that can be hard to predict. My parents got me a tin whistle for Christmas and I bought a music book online, and I was playing it all the time for a couple weeks and haven't picked it up since.

Some more thoughts:
This is maybe more of a pasttime than a hobby, but solitaire with actual cards is both still possible and cheap
Origami can be pretty cheap (I mean, it can also be very expensive, depending on how much you like collecting pretty paper, but some origami paper is fairly cheap and also you don't actually have to use paper sold as origami paper, you can use anything from printer paper to wrapping paper to candy wrappers.)
I've been getting into calligraphy which again can be very expensive if you like collecting cool pens/inks, but can also be done with one pen that costs a few bucks and (depending on the pen) ordinary paper.
Learning mnemonics/memory tricks can make you feel like a wizard and be completely free. Also low spoons and at least ime relatively brain fog resistant (it's creative) and ADHD friendly, ymmv.
People don't normally considered meditation a hobby, but, it can be done for free as long as you have space to sit down in.
At home yoga needs somewhat more space and more info in terms of how to do it, but if you're not paying for classes (which people mostly do for externally imposed structure, not for the purpose of learning) it can be very cheap. As can other body-movement practices like qi gong.
If you want to learn to juggle, you need a small amount of starting equiptment but not that much and it can be fairly cheap
Learning to mend/darn can save money. (And the upfront cost of a small sewing kit is pretty cheap.)
Art hobbies tend to have a cheap side and an expensive side.
Community stuff: volunteering generally does not have a cost other than transportation, and can cover a wide range of skills/activities (or you know lack of skills) and time commitments. Some people have a choral society or other musical group they participate in, or eg an amateur theater company, or meetup group or book club or amateur sports league or hiking group. These vary in cost, for instance a music group might involve buying your instrument and buying specific clothes for performances, and for groups where you need to show up every time or nearly having an irregular work schedule can get in the way, but again very wide range of options here and some of them some of the time are going to be free/very cheap and some are going to be manageable with an inconsistent schedule.
I think getting an idea of what hobbies cost from things like online videos or aesthetic blogs or whatever can be very misleading -- if the person making the content has affiliate links or gets sent stuff for free, they've got an incentive to make the hobby look like you have to buy things you don't actually have to buy. Especially if it's a relatively obscure hobby where people are unlikely to know other people who do it in person.
Although even with something like cooking or baking that is widespread ...somebody who loves the thing enough to have a significant online presence of course is going to be more likely to want to invest in really nice equiptment for it, say a stand mixer, but that doesn't mean everyone who wants to get into baking needs to own a stand mixer before they make their first batch of brownies. I don't know what the threshold for "inexpensive" is here, some people really do have rice and beans money and that's it, but... it's possible to get the idea that a lot of hobbies are more expensive than they actually are. You don't need a five thousand dollar racing bike to ride a bicycle for fun.

if I was worried it might not have aged well, well...worry no longer.
So the thought process was: brain not work well, what do I do when brain not work well?
(Other than social media.)
(rejecting several options that require brain to work)
I know, I can read webcomics.
Anyways I am remembering why I liked Queen of Wands.
But also damn, webcomics were less pretty in the 2000's.

the problem with autism is sometimes you want to do something (brave) but you need someone to gently walk you through each step so you know what will happen. and people don’t like doing that
