Which of Lemony Snicket’s characters are LGBTQ+?
The subject of queer representation in children’s books remains a highly controversial matter to this day. It doesn’t stop some authors from trying or from playing with the rules. There is indeed a long tradition in classical literature of “coded queerness”, or rather of characters whose deviation from the accepted norms of sex and gender is only implied through symbols, allusions or unreliable narration.
It’s not as if the subject were taboo to Daniel Handler. The author has testified to sexual experiences with both/several genders (Link - skip to 0:52:00) and there’s a number of queer characters in his more “adult” novels: Tomas from “Adverbs”, Douglas from “The Basic Eight”, etc. How does that translate to the books he’s written under the name of Lemony Snicket?
As often in children’s literature, the matter is rather timidly present but not totally absent either. Let’s delve deeper into the subject after the cut.

Behind the scenes photos by photographer Justin Borucki for Kerrang! magazine. New Jersey, 2004.
“I was hired by Kerrang! magazine to follow Gerard and Ray around and revisit the making of their latest album (I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love). We visited a hospital, the bar where they played their first gig, their childhood homes (Ray’s childhood bedroom is pictured), their practice space, and a diner that they ate at a lot when making the album. Most of these images were never run or seen by the public.”
