Evaluation
1. What where the aims of your film?
I aimed to produce a film lasting no longer than two minutes in which i would explore the issues of feminism in an alternate hard hitting way. My short film was influenced by my textual analysis in which i analysed and compared both films Hick and Violet & Daisy. Both of these films have strong female lead characters. However, this is not without a struggle as they have constant male characters as obstacles in the way of there goals. Although my film relates to the issues raised in both textual analysis films studied, it is unique as i have chosen a different story-line. To make my film realistic i had to research different shots and ways of filming which would portray the different emotions of my characters. For example the use of a high angle shot would make a character look helpless and defeated, Whereas, a low angle shot would make a character look strong and important. These kind of things where very important in the making of my film as i aimed to make the audience feel strong emotions towards the characters through the use of camera angles and character placement. The use of different camera angles and character placement also made it easier to differentiate between the antagonistic and the protagonistic. Through lots of thought and planning i decided to include a voice over as this would portray the feelings of the main character throughout. It also made a statement involving feminism as the voice over is spoken by a girl.
2. What codes and conventions identified in the TA were used in your film?
To create my film i had to study two feature length films of my choice and aimed to use similar codes and conventions in my film. The two films i studied in my textual analysis are Hick and Violet & Daisy. Hick is said to be a comedy/drama and Violet & daisy a action/comedy. However, when watching these films and studying them properly i discovered that they have very dark undertones and strong messages. With my film i wanted to portray the message of feminism so i chose to follow the genre of drama as this was the most effective genre to use to get my strong message across. The feminism movement in film is an on growing thing and each year more and more females take the part of the leading role which would have never been possible so many years ago. In both films Hick and Violet & Daisy it is clear that the leading roles are taken on by females. However, their character faces many interruptions made by male characters. I aimed for my film to follow this as it shows a female lead character facing problems caused by a male which she learns to overcome. In both textual analysis films fairly natural lighting was used so when producing and editing my film i didn't want to over edit it in anyway or adjust the lighting too much in the process of pre production.
Cinematography
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This slight upwards tilt from violet and daisy is similar to my upwards tilt. They both represent the same thing as they show the power of the female characters and how they are the ones in control of the situation. In Violet and daisy this shot takes place when Violet is overpowering the male characters in the film and in my film this shot is shown when my lead female character is overpowering the character of her abusive father. The female characters are both positioned
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This over the shoulder shot from Hick is also very similar to my shot. It seems to show the vulnerability of the characters in both Hick and my short film. In the film Hick she isn't’ focusing on herself in the mirror as a man is taking over that by making her focus on him. This shows the power of men in this film which is also a present issue in my film. Although the girl in my film is looking at only herself in the mirror she is looking at one part of herself which is the bruise on her face which was caused by a man. This again shows the power of men in both my film and Hick as they are in control of the emotions of the female characters.
Mise en Scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mise en scene from this shot in Hick is similar to the mise en scene in my short film. I have included alcohol in my film as it helps to show the audience the personality of the character and it helps to explain the narrative. The character placement in my film makes the male look like the dominant one. This was intended as I wanted the girl to look weak and powerless throughout the film to help explain her situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The character placement in this shot is similar in the sense that both the characters are in the centre of the shot. The characters are also shown from a low angle making the female characters look stronger and in power. The colours in my film are all very calming blue tones as this represents that she has finally escaped the horrible lifestyle she was been forced to live.

Feedback
What I have learnt from this feedback?
This feedback from my Teacher and peers is that to improve my film I need to record a new voiceover with the proper equipment so the voiceover doesn't sound muffled. To do this I will use a proper microphone recorder from the media department. Once this is completed my film will sound a lot more professional and you will be able to hear it a lot clearer. Another that was suggested to me by a few of my peers and my teacher was to add another bit of filming. This would consist of a flashback of the young girl and her mother. I believe that this would look really good in my short film as it would help the audience to understand the story a little more. Once I have fully completed all of these suggestions my film will appear at lot better and more in depth.

Post L - Editing Process
So far i have managed to get most of my shots completed ad edited. I have also added a voice over and sound effects in the background. I completed these tasks on final cut pro using a mac.
To improve my short film i need to re-shoot some of my clips as the lack of lighting makes them appear slightly grainy. I also need to re-do my voice over as i used my phone and you can hear a muffled sound in the background.Although it is not fully completed i am happy with the outcome of my draft.

These are some examples of cinematography from my textual analysis films which influenced the cinematography in my own short film
Tumblr media
This particular medium close up rom Hick of her looking in the mirror influenced my shot film as i wanted to show my actress looking at herself in the mirror and reflecting on the awful events which had just taken place. I think the use of a medium close up of a character looking in the mirror is really effective as it portrays the character viewing themselves as other people would view them.
Tumblr media
The strong use of close ups in Violet & daisy influenced the cinematography in my film as i like the way a close up can capture the true emotions on the characters face. I used quite a lot of both close ups and medium close ups in my short film as it was an emotional drama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The use of long shot/two shots in the film Hick inspired my use of them in my short film due to the fact that a two shot shows the intimacy of two characters. It also helps the audience to understand that they need to focus on a situation between two characters in that scene. A two shot will work well in my film when i’m portraying the relationship between the dad and the daughter.
Tumblr media
This slight close up upwards tilt from Violet & Daisy inspired one of the ending shots in my short film as it shows how the character has developed and become a stronger character.
SCREEN TESTS
Tumblr media
This is who i have chosen to play the role of Frances. The reason for this is because she is my little sister so she is always available to do filming for when i need it. She also plays the character of Frances really well as she can act in an way to make the audience feel emotion and sympathy towards her. Her age also fits well as Frances is meant to be a young girl facing an abusive life with her alcoholic farther.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is who i used for Frances’s Dad. In real life this is my dad and i think he plays the part really well. Because he is mine and my sisters dad it wasn't uncomfortable when he was acting out the aggressive scenes. His image also fits the character really well as he is a builder so he wears mucky work clothes and he is covered in tattoos. His bald head also makes him look more aggressive and manly.

SHOOTING SCHEDULE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To shoot my film i used my own Nikon D3300 DSLR camera as it captures things in better quality. Due to this being my own camera i have more knowledge on how to use it properly. My camera also has a UV lens which stops light glares and helps create a much better image. To make my shots look more professional i used a tripod as this prevented my filming from looking shaky and unstable.
Tumblr media
This was the weather on the first day of shooting. It helped in creating some good natural lighting in some of my scenes. However, due to most of my filming being in side on this particular day of filming it didn’t have too much of a big impact.
Tumblr media
This was the weather on the second day of shooting. It worked really well because towards the end of the day there was a slight tint of blue/purple in the sky which created a really melancholy mood when Grace runs away in the ending scene.

Post H - Location report, Risk assessment release forms.
Tumblr media
My first featured most important location in my film is my kitchen as this is where the argument between character 1 and character 2 occurs. The reason i have chosen the kitchen is because it is an everyday normal location in a house. It is also important because character 2 is a drinker so this is where he gets his alcoholic supplies from in the house. Although this location seemed like the best idea it proved quite difficult to film due to the bad, dull lighting which made the image appear quite grainy.
Tumblr media
My second featured location is the bathroom. I have chosen this as there is a mirror for grace to look in and it creates an emotional effect. This location also fits in well with the film because it is an essential location inside a house. The simplicity of the bathroom works well because her home life isn't great. Therefore, meaning that she wouldn't live in a fancy house.

Post G - Initial Ideas
Tumblr media
My film
... will be focusing both on the disruption and realisation stage of Todorov’s equilibrium theory. One character in my film appears to be the villain. However, my other character appears to be both the princess and the hero as they are the victim at one point but then they go on to save themself. My film progresses as a linear narrative due to it following a story in a chronological format. My film features the use of a voiceover to explain the story to the audience. Some key binary opposites are used in my film such as strong vs weak and good vs evil. My film will follow Barthes action code as one action will lead to another developing the story in a way which makes sense.
My textual analysis
... Explored all parts of Todorov’s equilibrium theory and my focal characters fit best into props villain, hero, and princess character type. Both films from my textual analysis follow a linear plot line as they follow a chronologically ordered story line. Both films feature a diegetic monologue and some parts feature a voice over. They also both follow Barthes action code.
Tumblr media
My film
... My film features the key theme of redemption as they are choosing to save themselves from there sinful life.
My textual analysis
... my two textual analysis films explore the themes of redemption, man vs himself, and man vs society but in a controversial way.
Tumblr media
My film
... My film is going to be controversial as it will challenge the representation of girls/women and conform to the representation of girls/women at different points i the film.
My textual analysis
... Both my textual analysis films conform and challenge the representation of women making it similar to my film.
Tumblr media
My film
... The messages and values which are present in my film are that girls/women can be strong and independent when it comes to fighting back at someone or something that has being taking over there life in a negative way. It also aims to raise awareness for abuse and alcoholism in family situations.
My textual analysis
... Both films that i chose for my textual analysis share similar aspects but also very different aspects. In my first chosen film ‘Violet & Daisy’ the messages and values of the real meanings of life are shown. In my other chosen film ‘Hick’ the messages and values of how both mental and physical abuse are raised and the major affects it can have on a person are shown.
Tumblr media
My film
... will explore the style of British new wave social realism as it will take up serious social issues. It will also touch upon the style of the French new wave.
My textual analysis
... focuses on the style of film noir and it also touches upon the style of British new wave social realism in the film ‘Hick’.
Tumblr media
My film
... is going to be inspired by Frank Godwins use of cinematography and Vanja Cernjul uses of unique cinematography style.
My textual analysis
... doesn't really focus on authorship as both directors Geoffrey Fletcher and Derick Martini have very little film making experience making them both Metteurs en scene’s.

My film
... I am going to use both diegetic and no diegetic sound in my film. The sound effects in my film will appear to be diegetic however they will be added in as folly sound. The voice over in my film will be non diegetic and added in in post production. My music will be added in as non diegetic. I am going to make two versions of my film because of the song i am using my film could be at risk of having all sound cut out due to copyright reasons.
My textual analysis
... Uses both diegetic and non diegetic sound. In the scene i have chosen from the film ‘Hick’ a voice over is used to show her masking the sound of a gun shot with the word “pop”. In the scene i have chosen for ‘Violet & Daisy’ diegetic sound is mainly used. However, the use of folly sound is used to emphasise the sound of gunshots.

Short Film Research 3
youtube
I believe that this short film is useful as short film research as it is based on the same issues and events that my film is going to be. The multiple abuse scenes shown in this film helped the audience in feeling sympathy for the young girl. It also helped raise awareness and  for the severity of mental and physical child abuse. This film relates to the story being told in my film as the parents are the antagonistic characters.

Short Film Research 2
youtube
I really enjoyed this short film and thought it told a truly heart breaking and extraordinary story. All aspects to this film where explored in great depth which helped in making the audience feel very strong emotions. The use of voice over in this film relates to my short film as all sound in my film will be added in with the use of a voice over. The strong upsetting story told also relates to the short film i am making as it explores the empty childhood of young people living with abusive and undependable parental figures. In my film the dad is shown as the antagonist and he also is in this short film ‘ReMoved’. The storyline of this film is very similar to the storyline of my short film making them look very alike.

Post F - Short Film Research 1
youtube
I enjoyed the short film ‘Drink’ because of the deep meanings it portrayed about how people take things for granted and don’t realise what they have until its gone. Although this film is described as a physiological thriller i believe it is also a drama due to the dramatic events that occur throughout. The short film i produce will resemble this short film because of the serious issues that are raised and it will reflect real life problems that people can relate to. However the way i make my film will be different to this short film because i am making my film a lot more realistic in terms of events compared to this short film.

Post C: Textual Analysis Draft
Explore the representation of women in Hick and Violet & Daisy
Both of my chosen films go against the general representation that men are often portrayed as being the stronger model of both sexes. My first chosen film “Hick” was released in May 2012 and directed by Dereck Martini with a budget of seven million dollars. The genre of Hick is described as comedy/drama although throughout the films narrative there are clearly very dark undertones and hidden connotations. Hick follows the story of runaway teen Luli who follows the wrong road in the childlike hope of a better future however, Luli soon crosses paths with a going nowhere loner and a cocaine snorting sweetheart.
On the other hand, Violet & Daisy was released just a year later in June 2013 with a higher budget of 8 million USD by director Geoffrey Scowcroft Fletcher. The genre of the film is described as Action/Comedy but again it is evident throughout the film that there are much darker undertones to it. In my other chosen film ‘Violet & Daisy’ two teenage girls play the role of assassins which creates controversy as it is usually men chosen to play these types of characters in films.  Violet & Daisy follows the story of two teenage girls sent on a job to take the life of a man they soon become very close with, making the job a lot harder to complete than expected.
Both of my chosen films go against the general representation of women and how they are stereotyped as gentle and weak. Through the use of action film iconography in both films Violet & Daisy and Hick the teenage girls carry guns which shows they are strong characters. In my chosen sequence for Violet & Daisy through the use of mise on scene it is clear by what the two girls are wearing and the color of it that they are the protagonistic characters. The color of white represents a sense of purity and innocence. Both films partly follow the Bechdel test for movies as they are at least two named female characters that talk to each other and play main parts. However, in both films their main topic of conversation is about men, because although the men in violet & Daisy and Hick are portrayed very differently they are still going to greatly affect the female’s lives forever.
Tumblr media
In the opening scene of this sequence one of the teenage assassins (Daisy) is playing pattacake with The Mister she is supposed to be killing. This shows how she has a childlike mindset, tricking the audience into completely under estimating her abilities. It also shows how she has been made to grow up quicker due to her job. This confuses the narrative because she is meant to be taking this man’s life not playing childhood games with him. Both characters in this scene are wearing white which equalizes them in terms of power and makes the female assassin (Daisy) appear no more inferior than the older looking man(The Mister). However, the mise en scene shows the age of the man as he has glasses on a chain around his neck making it obvious his eyesight isn’t very good anymore because of his age. This shows as a disadvantage and makes him appear as a weaker character to Daisy. Therefore, this reinforces how the film goes against the general representation of men been the stronger and more powerful characters.
In the next scene of the sequence four men known as ’Donnie and his crew’ barge in and are all shown from the use of a low camera angle standing over the mister and Daisy pointing guns at them. The use of a low camera angle shot makes Donnie and his crew appear more powerful than The Mister and Daisy as it makes them look a lot bigger especially because of the iconography used of them all holding guns. Therefore, this conforms to the feminist film theory of men being portrayed as the stronger sex. The mise en scene of the four characters’ outfits adds to the powerful antagonistic image as all the men are dressed in black or darker colors compared to the color of The Mister and Daisy’s clothing being pure white. This scene creates juxtaposition to the rest of the film as it reverts to the general representation of men being more powerful than women.
Through the editing technique of the shot reverse shot a long winded conversation takes place between Donnie (the main antagonist) and Daisy, during this scene Daisy is seen as the childlike character almost having a patronizing conversation with Donnie. Unbeknown to himself, this is to stall time until her partner Violet arrives to wipe out ‘Donnie and his crew’, during this scene the film juxtapose the binaries of good versus bad in Daisy’s character as she protects The Mister by shielding him with her own body to protect him from the bullets clearly stating a bond between the two has been formed, though we may question whether is it just the mere fact that she has been assigned a job to carry out and will allow no other to do it for her.
To emphasize the gunshots in this scene foley sound is used which contributes to the genre of the film being action.
In the aftermath of the killing of ‘Donnie and his crew’ the sociopathic tendencies of Violet and Daisy become crystal clear especially when they embark on their ceremonial dance which they have named “ the internal bleeding dance “ this consists of both teenagers unashamedly dancing on their dying victims’ bodies causing them ultimate death whilst giggling and listening to  music , this is shown through the use of contrapuntal sound as the song used in this scene is Three Degrees “ When Will I see you Again” ; this callus scene may cause distress and discomfort to the audience. A sense of black comedy is created when humour is created through the lyrics of the song playing in relation to their brutal crime.
My other chosen sequence is from a film called Hick. In the beginning scene of the sequence the audience are introduced to Eddie flipping a gun in his hands. Straight away through the use of iconography the fact that Eddie is holding a gun shows that he has some kind of dominance and power. However, this power is only supported by the fact that he is holding a gun. In the first opening scene an American shot is used to show that Eddie isn’t the only person in the room. Through the use of mise en scene you can straight away see by the clothing the person is wearing that it is a woman. She is wearing pink colored silk clothing and her curved body shape also suggests that she is a woman. This straight away contrasts with Violet & Daisy as Hick supports the general representation of men being the stronger characters than women whereas in Violet & Daisy the women have the same power as the men if not more, going against the general representation. Also through the use of mise en scene the sequence is filmed in a small log cabin with all the blinds shut. This shows the audience that Eddie is trying to hide his wrong doings.
In the following scene from my chosen sequence the cinematography technique of a two shot is shown of Eddie trying to kiss Glinda. The fact that a two shot has been used shows the audience only them two characters are meant to be in the shot. This could connote intimacy and be representing that at one point Eddie and Glinda had a relationship but by Glinda’s reaction to Eddie it shows that it wasn’t a good kind of relationship. It is obvious by the character’s placement that Glinda is trying to get away from Eddie foreshadowing what she has been trying to do her whole life. However, Eddie still doesn’t seem to understand that he has done anything wrong and believes that Glinda could still love him.
This scene could also evidence that Glinda is potentially showing traits of Stockholm syndrome in the way in which she still seems to have an empathic feeling of protectiveness towards Eddie. This is shown with the use of diegetic sound when Glinda says “what more could I do for you?” clearly stating that she goes out of her way just to try and please him. This could be seen as a desperate plea from Glinda.
Eddie then goes on to accidentally shoot Glinda. This is made clear with diegetic sound when Eddie says “This was a fucking accident babe”. The use of the word ‘babe’ continues to support the fact that Eddie still thinks he has something with Glinda even now after all the torment he has caused her during her life which has resulted in her demise at the hands of Eddie. In this shot you can see all three characters featured as Eddie is kissing Glinda showing his undying but possessive love for her. Although Eddie has caused himself a great deal of upset and pain from killing Glinda, killing someone is the ultimate way to possess someone forever.
Toward the end of the scene the camera cuts to Luli holding a gun up directly facing Eddie. Using iconography, it is made clear that Luli has the possession of a gun because of her vulnerability. Luli has carried this unused gun with her from the beginning of the film which shows the audience that she is most probably going to need to use it at some point in the film and now is that time. The camera slowly zooms towards Luli showing her shaking body and worried facial expression. As this is going on asynchronous sound is used to display Luli’s blank thoughts at this traumatic time. The sound of a gunshot is not displayed in the moment that Luli shoots Eddie, instead a voiceover of Luli saying “pop.” Is used. This shows how Luli is still just a child and must create some sort of distraction to take her mind off the fact that she is shooting someone. Once Luli has shot Eddie she goes on to say “sorry” whilst crying using diegetic sound. This also shows vague signs of Stockholm syndrome within Luli as she feels bad for killing someone who has abused her both mentally and sexually. This scene supports the feminist film theory in a really upsetting way as it shows the reality of the bad influences controlling men can have over young girls. However, it also shows how in films they only ever show men as the antagonists in scenes like this creating a bad stereotype for men in real life.
At the end of the scene a crane shot is used to show the aftermath of the events which took place in the log cabin. With the use of mise en scene and character placement Glinda’s arm is placed under Eddies neck as they lay there peacefully dead in a pool of their own blood. The way they are both laid could be representing their relationship in the past and the way that they now look so peaceful and at ease could be to represent that all the bad things in their life have now gone forever. During this part of the scene the song ‘Patsy Cline – I fall to pieces’ is played as part of the films sound track. The lyrics used in the song ‘I fall to pieces each time I see you again’ represent the relationship between Glinda and Eddie completely as every time they see each other life goes terribly wrong, making the song fit perfectly with the scene shown on screen. As the camera continues to follow all the objects in the room with an Ariel view it then zooms to some rope and a drawing on the bed which Luli was placed on for most of the scene. With the use of mise en scene the rope shows that Eddie was holding Luli hostage and the drawings support that she was at such a young age and that she used them as a happy distraction to take her mind off the reality of what was actually happening to her. The end of this scene completely goes against the general representation of men being the stronger characters as Luli takes control of the twisted situation at such a young age and kills the poison in her life (Eddie).
In conclusion, I believe that both of my chosen films go against the general representation of women and how men should be perceived as the stronger sex. Although the films show it in different ways I see the women as stronger characters both mentally and physically. In Violet and Daisy, the women’s overtaking power is shown with the use of iconography as they both carry a gun due to them being such strong characters (assassins). However, their leading power is also shown with their smart and manipulative word choice helping them get out of situations which could cost them their lives. In Hick, the power of women isn’t always made apparent as both characters Glinda and Luli have been held hostage by Eddie mentally and physically. However, Glinda’s strength is shown when she tries to find young Luli knowing that there is a strong possibility that she will come across Eddie again in her life. Luli’s dominating power over the male character is shown when she shoots Eddie. This shows an aging mental power as she is only young but she still knows what he has done to her and Glinda is not acceptable.
SELF ASSESSMENT COMMENTS:
To improve my essay further and achieve a higher grade i need to include more about the feminist film theory throughout my essay. I also need to go through my essay and check that i am using all terminology correctly and analyse my evidence in a lot more depth.

Post B: Textual Analysis Details
My two chosen films are ‘Violet & Daisy’ and ‘Hick’. The reason i have chosen these two films to write about is because they both involve the genre of action and are listen as comedy’s. However, both films have dark undertones throughout and i have explored this in my essay through writing about the different micro - technical features which display these dark undertones. I find both of these films really interesting to watch as they convey much deeper meanings. In both of my films i am focusing on the representation of women and how throughout the films the roles are reversed at times. For example in ‘Violet & Daisy the assassins are two teenage girls which isn’t usually expected in the film world as men are usually displayed as these kind of characters. In the film ‘ Hick’ the main character is a young girl called Luli who sets out on her own completely fending for herself.

Post A: The Brief
I will create a film sequence totalling no more than two minutes in duration that is based upon / influenced by aspects of my textual analysis and my planning.
For my short film, it is going to be about a girl and boy who are madly in love but one day she finds out he had been cheating on her all along with her life long best friend. The girl who has had her heart broken has a mental disorder and ends up having an episode soon deciding she wants to shoot her boyfriend and her best friend. Due to this been a short film and only lasting 2 minutes i am not definite on this plot idea because it may need more than 2 minutes to be explained properly. This could mean i have to adjust my idea during the filming and editing process.
Because my textual analysis is about both films ‘Hick’ and ‘Violet & Daisy’ which both include action with hidden deeper meanings to them. Both films include the theme of love and death which i am including in my film.
UPDATE!!!
I have now changed my original short film idea completely. I plan to base it on the hard life of a young girl who lives alone with her alcoholic father after her mother died. The young girl struggles massively on a daily basis until she's finally had enough and decides to quite literally run away from her problems. The name of the girl and the title of the film is going to be Frances as this means ‘free one’ in Latin. I plan to use a voice over portraying the stress and upset of the young girl.
My film will also address the issues of feminism as the leading character is a girl and the whole voice over will be spoken by a girl.
