aizawa calls mid patrol one night and asks you if you can take next Friday off.

"Umhf?" You blink at the time: 3:45. "I think?"

"Alright." He's silent for a moment. "I made us an appointment at the courthouse."

You mumble a nothing response, still on the brink of sleep.

"Just remember to take the time off," he presses. "Hello? Are you there?"

"Mhm." Your eyes won't even stay open.

"It's settled then. We'll get married next friday." The phone crackles as he breathes out. "Go back to sleep."

The line disconnects and you breathe a sigh of relief as you snuggle into your bed again-

You jolt up. Did he say married?

You held yourself back from John, sitting on the couch next to him, rather than right up against his side. Insecurity kept your shoulders tight, your head aimed firmly at the TV.

"Love?" John touched two fingers to the back of your hand.

"Hm?" You feigned ignorance, gaze darting to him and away again.

"What's going on in that pretty head?" His fingers curled around your wrist, stroking the thin skin of your inner wrist.

"Nothing." You swallowed. You'd never been good at lying to him.

John hummed softly, considering, before he scooted closer to you, warm thigh pressing against yours. "Wanna try that again?"

You sighed, closing your eyes, your emotion threatening briefly to drown you. "I just..." You stopped, struggling for words.

John waited patiently, warm and unmoving at your side. You knew he'd wait there until you opened up, all night if need be.

So you gave in.

"I worry, sometimes."

"About what?" His facial hair brushed your temple before his lips did.

"That I'm too... needy. Too clingy." Eyes still closed, your lips twisted in frustration. It wasn't easy to admit this, habit keeping the words trapped in your chest.

"Never." John moved, turning to wrap you fully in his arms, pulled into the warmth of his chest. "I never think that of you. I love you."

You swallowed hard against the emotion rising in your throat, hiding your face in his neck. "I love you too," you mumbled, a bit muffled.

"I've got you," he murmured, one big hand cupping the back of your head. "I've got you, love."

Neither of you moved for a long time, and John never commented on the damp patch on the collar of his shirt.
