Critical Thinking Application Activity
Me and my peers decided to spend the one million dollars that the city decided to invest into the Manor Park Neighborhood Development on youth development. We came to this agreement because we feel like if we spent the million dollars it would mean we are funding the police system and we don't think that it's a great idea. We all think that funding a youth development will give children and young adults opportunities that they don't usually get. Funding something like education isn't that ideal, because the money is really going to the school not the actual kids, so it isn't benefitting them. A youth development can get kids into sports, gaming, and just activities that their parents may not do with them on a day-to-day basis. We feel like this should go to a long-term solution so children in bad situations can feel loved if they don't feel it at home. We would need to know how many kids are interested and who need support because of things going on in their home. The investment should go to multiple different investments within youth development because all children aren't interested in the same activities. I would propose change all around the community if I had a 100 million dollars of a total investment. (Sam)
I think the money should be used towards youth development. Young people are the face of the future, so we need to move in a way that helps them. If we help use the money towards youth development, we help fund the future. The mayor should consider investing the money in young people. The mayor ‘s commitment not only contributes to future fundraising but also keeps young people out of trouble and off the streets. This is seen as a long-term goal as it helps young people improve their lives by keeping them involved in activities that give them something to do. (Camiya)
Youth are the next generation and opportunities should be created for them to thrive. Youth development includes recreational centers which in turn builds positive attitudes and good behavior in youth. As a result, this will decrease future crime as the children and young adults of the community will have a place to go off the streets, and the possibility of a job as many recreational centers offer them to teens. Youth development also I turn includes education to an extent with after school programs such as tutoring. Overall, youth development makes the most sense to create a better community long term. (Iyssis)
The state help: $5,000,000.00 Foundation(s): $1,000,000.00
Money distribution: Youth development was chosen within my group because we all came to the realization funding needs to be properly invested. Youth development allows groups of young adults to participate in programs to give them better opportunities and help. Though crime and education are equally important due to systematic discrimination we can’t fully be sure it will go to all schools and not just the white ones, and in terms of funding crime they are funding the police department that creates the very crime we are looking to stop. Affordable housing and business help the city more so than the citizens it attracts buyers and repeats itself with the same product. Senior care is not as important as our youth. This creates a long-term solution for youth to then create something entirely new, maybe fix everything for their future children. Every piece of information was relevant. The money should go to multiple interventions. If the proposal was a $100,000,000 total investment, I would also choose business investment for better job opportunities. (Ndella)
The money should be invested towards youth development because it is imperative in ensuring that the youth have opportunities to be successful and pursue paths that don’t tempt them to commit crime. Programs should be developed to teach the youth hard and soft skills that they will need in order to develop into educated individuals. The children in neighborhoods such as Manor should not be overlooked because they are actually found to be valuable assets when exposed to positive change. Investing money towards the youth and engaging everyone in the community could ensure a stable future for not only the youth but the neighborhood. Early intervention can prevent delinquent behavior and will instead reinforce and instill a sense of purpose within the youth. Therefore, this money should be invested towards youth development in order to see long term change. (Gabrielle)

Field Work #13: Who Are Today's Migrants?
Me and my coworker, Isabella, dad is close. I asked to interview him for this week field work, and he agreed to do it. Isabella’s dad name is Sergio Garcia. He’s a 41-year-old immigrant from the Dominican Republic that came to the United States when he was 23. He stated that he wanted to come here for a better life for him and his family. Him and his wife, Maria Garcia, had Isabella when they were both 21. They decided to both come to the United States to give Isabella a better life. They both came to the states illegally with no plan just the clothes they had on their back. They lived in Queens, New York until they migrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 2019. Sergio told me that he had a hard life growing up in the Dominican Republic. He told me, him and his family were poor people who didn’t have anything to live for. He didn’t want Isabella to experience this type of gruesome behavior, so he decided to become motivated.
Sergio had to go through a lot of things when he got here. He couldn’t get a job because he wasn’t a registered immigrant, so they struggled for a year. It was until he was offered a position under the table as a construction work in Yonkers, New York. He said that was one of the best times of his life, because he got to provide for his family and that wasn’t something he was able to do in the past. He worked with the construction organization for 6 years, but he was tired of it, he felt like he was being underpaid. He also didn’t come to the states for construction he wanted to work on crime scenes because he’s always been fascinated with it.
Sergio stated that there were a lot of push and pulls when coming to the United States. He let me know that in the beginning it was very to get Isabella in school because she didn’t have any documentation. They didn’t have an address and to get placed inside a school you had to have an address. Once he got the job in construction the first thing that he did was get a home to make his family feel safe. He also got into some bad trouble with the police because he wasn’t familiar with the laws in New York. Dominican Republic and United States laws are so different from each other, one wrong move and you’ll be put in a cell. They had to overcome these things as life went on and about six years ago, both Sergio and Isabella got declared as US citizens. Sergio told me that he is very proud of what he has become and look forward to Isabella setting a great example like he did for the next generations in their family.

Group 14 Fall 22 Playlist
Shaniah
I chose Married Next Year by Rod Wave because because we had the chapter about marriage and it made me look at marriage differently and now it’s ultimately something I want in the near future & in the song he talks about settling down and getting married next year.
Tyona
The song the heart part 5 . This song defines culture because it rips off the truth about society. It brings things to life that people sweep under the rug. We spend too much time on what the world give us to engage our minds as far as the lastest news on social media or the entitlement feelings we have on irrelevant topics. Kendrick shows us the declining of our culture
Tayrn
i chose "dear mama" by Tupac because he dedicated this song to his mother basically saying how much he appreciates her for everything she has done for him and taught him, it relates to chapter 9 which is Kinship, family, marriage. He defines his relationship with his mom which is family and how they treat other.
Sam
sam chose “c7osure (you like)” by Lil Nas X because it relates to chapters 8 “Sexuality”. In the song Lil Nas X comes out to the world about his sexuality. I think this also relates to me because i’m also gay and the song hit home for me. He defines sexuality all throughout the song by letting the world know that it’s not about what you like, it’s about how you should be treated well whether what you identify as.
Our Group Choice
Our group song relates to chapter 10 social inequality & chapter 5 race and racism. “They don’t care about us” by micheal Jackson , where he was singing about inequality, racism (especially towards black people), police brutality and other human rights abuses all in one song.

Field Work #6: How does the news media cover social class and inequality?
Everyone is different when it comes to managing money. There are people who are really good with money, and there’s just people who shouldn’t have control of their bank account at all. I’m someone that shouldn’t have any control. I don’t think someone could live off two dollars. I’m sure there are some people who think differently but I don’t think you can. A bag of chips and a bottled water is $1.50 alone, plus tax. I spend at least 30 dollars a day on just lyfts, and that doesn’t include me wanting to buy food from McDonalds, Chick Fil A, and Popeyes. I can’t manage two dollars for two days. Its completely impossible.

Max weber argues that social class is the power, property, prestige if you have one. If you have one of these it is easier to obtain the others. He also thinks that division of labor and tasks everyone must play a part to get the job done. My article consists of artists having marketing teams to build their fanbase. All artists that are signed by a record label has a marketing team; it’s almost required. Marketing teams help you get your name in the media no matter the circumstances, to build your fanbase and support system. This has been going on since we can remember, but it has become a bigger thing as social media became bigger over the years. The article shows Lil Nas X and other artists like Lil Yachty speaking about artists having marketing teams and how they all play a part. I think this goes into this social class because it shows how everyone must play a part to get the job done. Once you have in this case, power, it’s easier to obtain the others.

Pierre Bourdieu argues that value, norms, knowledge, and beliefs that are valued in a society depends on your social class. He says your cultural capital plays a role in your power and status within society.  My article consists of ten incredible powers that the queen of England had before she passed away two months ago. The article lets us know things that the queen could do that actual citizens that lived in the UK couldn’t do. She could drive without a license, travel without a passport, and she’s the only person that could declare war on another country. This ties into the social class of beliefs and norms. This is a cultural thing in some countries that other countries and cultures might not agree with. These are social norms in the UK that people in the United States might side eye.

Karl Max determined that there were two different types of social classes. The bourgeoise and the proletariat. The bourgeoise were the owners of production in society, while proletariat were the workers. They were the poor that would do anything to pay the bills on the first. Even though this was over 100 years ago, things like this still happens throughout the world. They make people work in fields, warehouses, and factories just to pay them 10.00 dollars an hour while they’re making nearly 10,000 dollars a week. This ties into minimum wage while your superior is making 30x more than you. They lower the cost of things like production and increasing sale prices just to put extra money in their wallet. My article above shows how people are surviving by getting minimum wage in jobs that are making thousands of dollars. Some are even making less than minimum wage, but they’re still coming in everyday because they're determined to make ends meet.

Field Work #5: How Are We Related To One Another?
Tumblr media
Growing up you’ll always be around one side of the family more than another if your parents are separated and they’re co-parenting. During this time I was around my moms side of the family than my dads. Since I was around my moms side of the family more, I know more about them and how they are all connected. My mom and her three siblings all have different fathers and the same mom. My mom is the third oldest, while my uncle Man, is the oldest of everyone. Although my mom have siblings, my dad was very unfortunate to not have any. Even though he was spoiled because he was the only child, he didn’t have a connection in the house with someone his age. My moms dad died when she was about seven so I don’t know anything about him, and my dads father, Sam, is a mystery. I’ve only seen him one time in my life time. I don’t think he wants to meet his grandchildren and i’m fine with that.
My Mom and Dad met when they were teenagers. They had me on October 25th, 2004 when my mom was 19 and my dad was 20. They were madly in love. 15 Months they had my brother, Tye’shawn, on February 22nd, 2006. Me and brother were the only kids until my sister, londin, came along in 2010. Londin was born September 14th. My mom and Dad were together for 11 years when they eventually split.
My mom’s siblings have a total of four kids. Amina, Jay’ceon, Alexis, and King. Alexis is the oldest out of all my grandmothers children, but she doesn’t come around the family at all, because her mom didn’t let her when she was younger, so she doesn’t know a lot about us. Then there’s me the second oldest. My cousin, King, is the youngest at four years old. My grandmother has a total of eight grandchildren. My Little brother wasn’t included on the family tree because we don’t have the same father.
My Great Grandmother Had a big family. She had two sons and 5 daughters. My grandmother is the oldest, and my aunt Joyce is the youngest. My grandmother was born, July 21st, 1960. How insane is it that my Great Grandmother’s birthday is July 22nd. Even though they’re both cancers they act so different. My Great Grandmothers children birth goes, My grandmother, Aunt Vickey, Aunt Teresa, Uncle Tyrone, Aunt Angie, Uncle Marvin, and then Aunt Joyce. My grandmother wanted a big family and she got it!
My moms side has a lot of things they inherited from our ancestors, whether it’s traditions, body forms, cooking recipes, and even features. All in all I have more characteristics of my moms side than my dads.

Field Work #4
Growing up I would always question my ethnicity and where I was from. I was always told that I was African American and from the United States by adults. Even though they would tell me these things, I would always get picked on by kids my age, because I was too dark. I would get called names like “African Booty Scratcher”, And “Kunta Kinte”. No one would defend me because when I was younger it was praised for people to pick on dark-skinned people for the color of their skin. So, when these things would happen to me, I would always think my mom was lying about me being African American, and me being from the United States. My dad is even darker than me, so I would always think he was from Africa, just a person that lost his accent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always thought about where dad’s side of the family was from because we are all dark-skinned. There are rarely any lighter skinned people on my dad’s side of the spectrum. I’m not sure where my dad’s side of the family of the family is from aside from the ones that were brought from Africa Decades ago, but I know for sure that most of them were African American. Before my grandmother passed, I would ask her questions like “why are we so dark” and “why do people make fun of the color of my skin”. She would tell me that those people will soon learn that no matter the color of my skin, we’re all still Black. Ever since she told me this, I’ve embraced my complexion and didn’t care what anyone had to say. Even though Black people are all around the world and have been for decades, we have cultural norms that almost all of us abide by. Things like Rhythm, Seasoning, and even beatings are apart our culture. We may have been taken to America unwillingly, but we also brought our culture with us, and we embrace it as much as we can.

Field Work #3
Race and racism are a big thing everywhere. It is shown through movies, music, and even kid toys. Race can be seen as a good and bad thing, while I personally think racism can’t. Racism is the act of discriminating against someone because the color of their skin and I don’t support it. On the other hand, race shows the characteristics of a specific group and their culture and history. Race shows how people view other races and how they interpret their culture.
Tumblr media
There are so many key concepts that deal with race and racism, but one key concept I want to touch on is white supremacy. White supremacy is the belief that white people are superior to all races. It typically means they “dominate” other races in societies eye. White Supremacy is more towards the racism side of things. No one should think they’re better than any other race, because we all are human. A lot of people in the white community believe in white supremacy because society let them get away with it for so many years. White supremacy happens in things like career jobs. My example down below shows a white man being considered for a job before a black person because of the color of his skin.
Tumblr media
Another key component that deals with race or racism would be miscegenation. Miscegenation is the interbreeding of people considered to be of different racial types. I think miscegenation deals with more of racism. Racism is shown as this was used to ban different races from getting engaged and married. So, if an African American and Dominican tried to tie the night and get married, they would automatically be denied because they aren’t from the same decent and don’t have the same culture. I personally don’t agree with miscegenation. I think people should be able to marry who they want without someone having a say in it. My example below shows someone being denied marriage in clip where they were happy.
Tumblr media
Further on, another key component would be, Jim Crow. Jim Crow enforced racial segregation between blacks and whites. This law made it to where whites and blacks couldn’t use the same items. There were schools made for whites that black people were forbidden to attend. Black people had to sit in the back of the bus, while white people occupied the front. If a white person didn’t have anywhere to sit on the bus, you were forced to stand while they take your place on the bus. This topic ties into racism. Although Jim Crow laws aren’t around anymore people still feel that black people shouldn’t be able to get the same treatment as white people which ties into white supremacy. My example gives a brief look at how Jim Crow law segregated a lot of things.
Tumblr media
Another key component would be micro aggression. Micro aggression is a statement or action that was used toward a specific group of people in an ethic minority. An example of this would be when a white person used the word “nigger” to degrade black people. Usually when they use the hard R it is used to make us feel less of ourselves. The word nigger was used to degrade slaves in the 1800s. You didn’t name, you were spoken to as “nigger” or “boy”. This is a form of racism that I 100% don’t agree with. My example down below shows a white person degrading a black person by calling them out of their name.
Tumblr media
My last key component is phenotype. Phenotype is the genetics that shows the characteristics in an organism. This usually deals with things like characteristics that you develop from your parents. I think this topic ties in the topic of race. It shows your characteristics and how you got your skin color, which deals with things like race. The example below gives a more in depth investigate phenotype and how it shows things like race.

Fieldwork #2: Wants & Needs
Tumblr media
We recently discussed the topic of consumer culture in class, and I automatically knew I was one of many partakers when it came to the distinct topic. Growing up I was very spoiled, and that came with plenty of materialistic things from shoes, clothes, and plenty of consoles. Moreover, since this has always been a consistent thing to me it’s embedded in my mind that name brands are always the way to go. Name brand things aren’t really a need, but it nice to have. My Table is filled with things that I want more than need, and that’s a problem. As I wrote all my items down on my list, I realized that I’m wasting major money. Most stuff on the list I use or wear once and never come back to it. An example of this would be me complaining that I need new clothes for every event that I go to knowing that I have a plethora of unworn items in my closet. I have many staple pieces in my inventory so it’s hard to find everyday items in my closet. I have a very bad spending habit, and 100% shows in my table.
I have more wants than needs on this list. All my electronics are a need, especially my iPhone and HP Laptop. My phone is most definitely a need, as that is how I function in everyday life. I listen to music, watch calming videos with my phone and without it I don’t think I’d be able to function. My laptop is also a need because I do all my schoolwork on it. Without my laptop my work wouldn’t get done since almost everything in my classes is mostly electronic. Not having a laptop for school could cause my grades to decrease drastically. Another need on my list that people might look at sideways is hangers. I feel like hangers are a need because how would you hang your clothes up? If you can’t hang your clothes up, there would be absolutely no point to have a closet.

Fieldwork #1: The Iphone.
Tumblr media
The item I have chosen to present in my first fieldwork is the iPhone. An iPhone is a cellular device that you’re able to use for multiple purposes. I use my apple product every day without a thought to think twice, because it’s a part of my daily routine. A new apple product comes out at least once a year, and their favorite month to release and debut them are during September. Every September my mom and I are usually updating our phones to the newest version. The first iPhone was released in June of 2007, progressing into 2009, they were available to purchase at all major markets, that catered to electronics. The first iPhone was on the market for $600 dollars and contained only 4GB. Consumers these days wouldn’t pay for that, as newer iPhone models are able to hold approximately 1TB of storage. Back in 2007, no one paid attention to the first iPhone because of the price, and they thought it was a rip off. Sounds like every opinion these days about the newer iPhones.
Tumblr media
The first iPhone was manufactured in Shenzhen Factory of the Taiwanese company Hon Hai, which was also known as Foxconn. This company and particular factory dealt with the making of electronics, but they’re most know for the making of the iPhone. The founder of this company, Terry Gou, recently retired in 2019. Foxconn eventually named Young Liu the new chairman of this multi-billion-dollar company. Young Liu was swarmed in later that year, and it was at full effect July 1st, 2019. This company came about in 1974, as their first establishment was introduced in 1978. Even though Foxconn was known for their elections, the company made a plethora of masks during Covid. By doing this they wanted to stop the spread of corona virus in China. The company also bought vaccines for the citizens around them, as there was a big shortage during this time.
Tumblr media
My apple product has a big impact on my life. I’m not sure what life would be like without my iPhone or my iPad. I use my phone almost every second of the day, so if it was taken from me forever, I’m not sure I’d be able to function. My electronic is how I keep up with the daily news that’s happening in the world as it delivers the news at a fast rate. Something tragic could be happening in China and I could know about it in the span of minutes. I really appreciate that this product was made, because although I be on it most of the time keeping up with latest tea, it also helps me keep in contact with family and friends that I don’t get to see every day. The iPhone has a place where you can store photos forever, as in the early 2000s you would see a picture one day, and it’ll be gone the next day. You can listen to music on the go with your phone, instead of using an iPod or using vinyls and CDs.  All in all, my apple product of my life. It brings chaos, as well as peace and comfort.
Tumblr media
Steve Jobs was the mastermind behind the iPhone. He helped design it, as well as come up with the features for the phone. As he helped design it, he also it at the Macworld convention. When he did this, it received immediate attention from the internet, and blogs that were waiting to catch a groundbreaking story, that would change the way of life forever. Now days the newer iPhones are designed and developed in California, where the headquarters are located. Steve was a perfectionist. If he thought there was one mistake wrong with the phone, he and the designing team would all start over. This process would take weeks, even months. People from the design team spoke out, and said that no other chairman, and company worked as hard as Steve Jobs.
