A bad night's sleep, a sports injury, poor posture and spending too many hours slouched in an office chair can all lead to neck pain and neck stiffness.
While neck pain can be the result of poor sleeping positions, it rarely starts overnight and is usually something that increases over time. In most cases, neck pain is caused by poor posture, overuse, motions that put repetitive stress on the neck and injury.

Pain Management Strategies for Chronic Pain
According to the government-supported Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) Health, there are multiple treatment methods for chronic pain. Such treatment methods aim to manage pain so that a patient’s emotional and physical wellbeing is restored, and overall quality of life is maintained or improved.
In this blog, we’ll cover these chronic pain management strategies as detailed by ACI Health’s Pain Management Network.
Biomedical Chronic Pain Management Strategies
Biomedical pain management strategies include methods such as surgery, nervous blocks and medication. Procedures such as spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulators and intrathecal drug delivery systems are considered more invasive biomedical pain management strategies.
Other common biomedical chronic pain management strategies include:
Anti-inflammatory analgesics
Paracetamol
Antidepressants
Anticonvulsants
Opioids
It is worth noting that evidence of medical interventions in chronic pain is overall weak, and there may be a time limited role in selected cases of chronic pains. Most biomedical pain management strategies are recommended by western health practitioners, and should only be considered with the advice of a health professional.
Psychological Chronic Pain Management Strategies
Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) help patients address patterns of thinking and behaviour, with a focus on their relationship with pain. Psychological pain management strategies are mainly concerned with goal planning and development, as well as helping patients develop a more cohesive understanding of pain.
Psychological pain management treatments may also encourage lifestyle changes to improve sleep patterns. This may result in the development of pain and other stressor coping skills such as relaxation activities.
If you are looking to address your chronic pain, it is important to understand the chronic pain management strategies available to you, and to seek the advice of qualified medical professionals. In addition to the treatment methods listed above, there are also many other alternatives such as physical therapy and chiropractic care (offered in areas such as chiropractor Gladesville).

What are Orthotics?
Custom-made orthotics are made with 3D scanning technology, as well as with the diagnosis of a qualified chiropractor. A chiropractor may diagnose your feet or body with issues and create a pair of orthotics for your diagnosis. Learn more about orthotics by contacting your local chiropractor!
When it comes to relieving back and ankle pain, a possible solution is orthotics. Despite being so commonly used, not many individuals understand the benefits of orthotics, and what the difference is between regular store-bought ones and custom-made ones. In this blog, we’ll help you learn more about orthotics and how they may help you!
Orthotics are special shoe inserts designed to help individuals with foot conditions, as well as other musculoskeletal pains such as back pain and leg pain. They may help with maximising comfort and body performance levels, reduce the risk of further injuries in the feet as well as assist with foot deformities.
Orthotics are most commonly used to help treat or relieve symptoms of:
Feet, ankle, knee, leg and back pain (treating joints and those that are affected further up the ligaments and muscle chain)
Flat feet (in which patients’ feet do not have a natural curve)
Arthritis (help with correcting foot posture and positioning to minimise the stress placed on the joints of the feet, or other parts of the body)
Diabetic feet (individuals which may have diabetes may also experience the increased formation of ulcers, sores and other deformities. Orthotics may help to prevent this)
If you are considering purchasing orthotics, it may be worth investing in custom-made ones, over those you can purchase from the local pharmacy. Reason-being, store-bought ones may not be designed to help treat your health concerns, whereas custom-made ones will be made only for your treatment.

Natural Treatment and Prevention Methods to Back Pain
One of the most common misconceptions about back pain is that it can only be treated through the intake of prescribed drugs. In light of the opioid epidemic which has plagued the world since the late 20th century, scientific research has supported the emergence of chiropractic spinal manipulation is an alternative natural treatment method for back pain.
Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a non-drug back pain treatment and uses physical therapy to help patients overcome their back complications, along with more passive forms of recovery such as bed rest.
Qualified chiropractors perform spinal manipulation treatments and can have different areas of clinical interest, from chiropractic care, to acupuncture, and to Chinese medicine. Chiropractic spinal manipulation combines physical exercise with professional medical care. Read more about chiropractic here.
When it comes to lower back pain problems, the US’ Agency for Health Care Research and Quality recommends conservative chiropractic care as a drugless form of initial professional treatment. Evidence from the Annals of Internal Medicine also considers chiropractic spinal manipulation to be helpful in treating acute and chronic low back pain.
The American Chiropractic Association also recommends patients suffering from low back pain to try spinal manipulation treatments for a substantial period of time first (such as chiropractic care, physiotherapy and acupuncture) before considering more advanced treatments such as surgery.
Research from both there chiropractic spinal manipulation perspective and western medicine point of view (as per the ACA) has indicated that back pain can be prevented by performing the following
Maintaining a healthy weight through a suitable diet
Remaining physically active (as recommended by a chiropractor)
Stretching before doing physically strenuous activities
Sleeping on mattresses with medium firmness (to minimise the curve in your spine)
Not smoking
Booking with a chiropractor for a physical check up regularly
Having proper posture
As back pain becomes more common, it is essential for patients to have some understanding of its potential treatment methods and preventative measures. Find out more about back pain here.
