The biggest indicator that life isn’t fair is remembering that all Japanese snow monkeys have to do is sit in hot springs and chill out. They don’t have essays. They don’t have politicians.

Fondly remembering the time that a cat owner casually entered their calico Maine Coon in a cat fancier's competition and the judges lost their minds because the cat was 1) male and 2) able to bear children

I wanted to make a note on these tags - and please bear with me, because I absolutely do not mean to be rude and these are valid concerns, but I need to stress the importance of this. ALWAYS have your cat in a hard-sided carrier when they are in the car. No exceptions. I don't care if you're going to the vet, if your cat is harness trained for the seat belt, if they hate the carrier or if you like to carry them in the car. I do not care what your reason is. Put your cat in a hard carrier. Yes, with a hard stop they do get jostled. You can reduce that by putting the carrier on the floor of the car instead of the seat, but even then, they only get pushed into the side of the crate. Which, if sized correctly, is less than 6 inches. It's unlikely that 6 inches of space will cause serious injury if the car stops suddenly.
But if you get into a car accident with your cat in the car, any other option will cause injury. Lets go down the list.
Loose in the car - don't. Just. Do not. A cat loose in the car will get under the seats, can get under the pedals, and if you get into an accident, can easily run through a bent door and get lost. Or worse, will be thrown from the car or around the car. Your cat will very likely get seriously injured, or die.
Being held in arms - You will be scratched, bitten and you will likely let go of your kitty if an accident happens. And then you have the issue of a loose cat in a damaged car, when everyone is already stressed and freaking out, which is literally a hell scenario. See above point.
Seat belt/Harness - Better, but still not good. For dogs, sure, this works to a degree. But for cats? No. Your cat will still feel the entire impact of the accident, and has no protection from thrown glass, metal, objects or people. And then you end up with the issue of the point above too - you have to figure out how to unclip a panicking cat without getting mauled.
Any kind of box that isn't an actual pet carrier - Better, I guess??? Not really?? Especially if it's cardboard. Just don't. Invest in a carrier. I'm really tired of people bringing their cats to the vet in laundry baskets.
Soft-sided carrier - Good. Okay. Now we're getting somewhere. Soft sided carriers often have little clips or extra loops that you can pull a seat belt through. They're breathable and are easier to get cats into, but the issue is that they're soft sided. They give some protection, but anything that causes a big impact will still collapse the side of the carrier and hit the cat. Not ideal with you're dealing with things like crunched doors and airbags. Also many cats learn how to open the zippers, so. Y'know. Not great.
Hard-sided pet carrier - THE CORRECT AND SHOULD BE THE ONLY OPTION. Get an actual cat carrier that is big enough for your cat to comfortably lay down and turn around in, but no bigger. Any bigger and there's more space to be thrown around, and any smaller and it's uncomfortable. If you get into an accident, yes, your cat will be tossed around but at least it's INSIDE the carrier. They're very unlikely to get hit with sharp objects, they have a much better chance of surviving an impact, and the best part is your cat can't get out! You get into an accident, you reach back and grab the carrier, and you get the hell out of the car.
I understand wanting to give your cat the most comfort, and that hard sided carriers seem cold and rough on the body, but your cat is the SAFEST in one. Take the discomfort, don't sacrifice safety, and just put your cat in a hard carrier.
Thank you for reading, I wish you all the best, and I hope this didn't come off as too aggressive!
Side note: put your cat in a carrier to bring them to the vet. please. there are other animals in the clinic and i am not responsible if your cat gets out of your arms.
