SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: TONIC BOUTIQUE
Tumblr media
When I hear someone say "I got it at Tonic", I can't help but get the warm and fuzzies.  TONIC to me is like an old friend I've know since high school. The boutique reminds me just how fun it is to be a girl. Dresses, skirts, heels.. come on, it's pretty awesome! And, that's exactly what Tonic is; a really awesome boutique for women.
Tumblr media
Many of you readers may feel the same way about this lovely woman, Roxanne Woodley.  To me and many others she is like a sister and good friend. We've known her, and seen her throughout the years, giving us guidance in our most formidable fashion years. Now here's the story behind the lovely boutique for women, written by Jessica Reimer.
Roxy – an obsessive thrifter – thought she’d try her hand at launching a business. Roxy was always tackling multiple home decor projects and wanted a platform to share the fruits of her creative labour. This lead to what became known as The Stuff Store, 300 square feet of all things vintage and beautiful. Given the space constraints, the “stuff” at the Stuff Store tended to be small – recovered footstools, farmhouse benches, collectible glass and vintage lamps, and handmade candles. There were also vintage dresses, coats, and the famous World of Trout bags from a fellow prairie entrepreneur.
Tumblr media
The Stuff Store soon developed a strong local following with other Broadway Avenue merchants showing an avid interest in the boutique.  The Stuff Store exposed the people of Saskatoon to independent brands like Luscious, The People Have Spoken, House of Spy, iClothing, World of Trout, Honey Punch, and Gravy Stain.
Tumblr media
As the store grew up so, too, did its customers. The women who had been loyal Stuff Store customers for over four years began requesting dressier clothes – outfits to wear on the job, out on the town, and to formal events like weddings. Because the store was already packed to capacity, the time was right for change. Roxy scored a prime piece of real estate right in Saskatoon’s downtown core and created Tonic – a shop for women (and the men who love them). The bright white shop was decorated with its infamous punchy, hot pink accents; and zeroed in immediately on dresses... and lots of them! With many of the classic “raver” brands – think Darling in This Dress – began introducing unique and distinctive dresses to their collections, Tonic’s stock and celebrity blossomed.
Tumblr media
Since that time, the store has expanded its family of brands to include international designers as well as various kitschy accessories and gift ware. Despite this expansion, though, Tonic’s commitment to showcasing local designs and interesting unique dresses has not changed. From cocktail to maxi, floral to solid, Tonic stocks up on keepsake dresses and it's Tonic’s goal is to keep your wardrobe interesting and on trend.
Since 2013, Tonic is also a proud retailer of local designer, Rebecca King. "the girls love Rebecca King, and that she is from here. We did a lovely pop up and her regulars came as well as people who wanted to meet her. It was great!" Roxanne Woodley
Tumblr media
From this Farminista is born..
Farminista – a craftily curated collection of vintage-inspired fashion and other home decor – gives nods to both The Stuff Store and to Tonic. Each dress is classically modern, with just the right amount of retro flair to suit any prairie girl or woman worldwide with an appetite for vintage loveliness. Farminista girls flood TONIC stores during holiday seasons – often wearing one of their (many) favourite Farminista pieces – to stock up on what’s hot and new. Tonic’s two locations and the Farminista website all showcase framed photos of Tonic staff modeling the latest staple Farminista pieces, often outdoors in a prairie landscape.
Tumblr media
Whether you’re in Saskatoon or Singapore, TONIC has stock available to everyone. By subscribing to the TONIC mailing list (HERE), you’ll be the first to know about in-store and online promotions, sales, and other incentives to say THANK YOU for helping spread our little piece of prairie sunshine all over the world!
We feel very proud to announce TONIC as a sponsor of Rebecca King for the 2nd year in a row! It is with TONIC's continued support we are able to continue the festival every year! THANK YOU!!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: LAURIE BROWN
Born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba Laurie developed her creative flare early. Shortly after graduating high school, she moved to Saskatoon and at the age of 19, found herself working at a Fabricland as Manager in Training. Laurie then moved to Toronto to enter the Fashion Arts program at Seneca College.
Pushing her limits, she created a collection for the 2010 Show with garments that had never been done before. Hand crafted and designed to move, the end result included motorized dresses that changed shape before your eyes. Laurie graduated with honors and Seneca's prestigious Student of the Year award. She now resides back in Saskatoon and has launched her own self-titled label. Continuing to tease technology into fashion, Laurie’s collections include ready-to-wear and unique show stopping pieces, and can be found at White Dhalia on 2nd Avenue.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: MOMENTUM Q&A
Tumblr media
Have YOU stopped into a MOMENTUM location lately? I'm telling you if you haven't, you're missing out. 'Fo reals'.
I recently sat down with Asif and he kindly answered all of my burning questions about MOMENTUM relating to how they got their start, what labels they carry, and more!  MOMENTUM is also the proud sponsor of the SFDF Industry Mixer on Friday, May 30th, which we'll chat about a little later.
Tumblr media
Can you give us a history lesson on MOMENTUM?
We opened our first location on 8th St in 2000 to cater to the growing needs of the youth in Saskatoon. We have changed our product mix over the years to ensure we are on top of trends and categories we feel strongly about. We opened a second door on Attridge in 2006 to cater to the growing areas of the city. At the time, our focus was different - but we matured our selection at both stores over the last few years, and are currently working our mix to be similar at both doors.
Tumblr media
What can we expect when we walk into MOMENTUM?
The retail experience should be fun and intriguing. We are a specialty, independent, locally owned store - with the Saskatoon climate, culture and people in mind. We offer a wide selection of men’s street wear, women’s fashion, rare sneakers, casual and fashion shoes and boots, outerwear, bags, sunglasses, watches and other accessories. Great pieces that can be put together with your existing wardrobe - or if you’re starting fresh - we can help you find what you need.
You can expect us to dress you from the feet up. From a fresh pair of Nikes to British leather boots. A fun top for the summer, or a winter jacket to keep you fashionable, yet warm. We really want to be accessible, so try to keep things affordable, but do offer a number of price points.
Tumblr media
What brands can we expect to see and love?
We stock product we wear, styles we like, and are relevant in the global marketplace. We stock some of the rarest sneakers in Canada, from Nike, Jordan, Reebok and Adidas. We also stock J Shoes, Blundstone, Red Wing, Timberland and other amazing shoes. Denim brands range from Levis to J Brand to Hudson. We offer hand cut leather goods, made in Vancouver by Ken Diamond. Dresses from Gentle Fawn and Obey. Streetwear for the guys from Alife, Raised by Wolves and other boutique brands mixed in with household names (toms, sanuk, etc). Classic eyewear from Ray Ban, Oakley and Retro Superfuture. Pair it with some Vitaly Jewelry and a watch and you’re set for any adventure.
Tumblr media
WHO is the MOMENTUM customer?
Our customer is youthful, at any age. Well put together guys and girls, no matter their style. MOMENTUM customers know we stock their favourite brand, but also know we curate a selection of new labels, so they can find their next favourite brand. So, if you’re dressing up a little for a night out with the girls, pushing a vintage Americana look, or wanting cuffed pants, a button down and some Chuck Taylor’s - Momentum can suit your needs.
Tumblr media
SFDF is really excited about the Mixer your planning THIS Friday featuring the works of Fashion Illustrator Rachael Meckling, can you tell us a little about what you're planning?
We’ve been supporting some of the best events in Saskatoon since 2000. We love music, local fashion, local business, and keep things interesting in Saskatoon - so it’s a good fit for us. It’s a chance for like minded people to meet up in a new setting - and have some fun. Gaff is on the decks, the room is interesting, and we’d like to meet some new people.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: Midtown Plaza
Tumblr media
Coming from a family of all girls, sorry Dad! It was considered a ritual, hobby, stress reliever and maybe even a slight problem to spend a whole day at Midtown Plaza once..maybe even twice a week. Being a small town girl with big city tastes I've always adored the mall and enjoyed what it has to offer.
Tumblr media
Watching the mall evolve over the years has been really exciting, I'm still grinning over the addition of Sephora!! But that's not all Midtown Plaza has to offer these days. Midtown Plaza goes above and beyond their glamorous billboard campaigns (created by Createbyfaith) and works at ground level connecting with the retailers and shoppers.
Tumblr media
For example IN FASHION, takes place next Thursday May 29th. This also happens to be the kick off event for the Saskatoon Fashion & Design Festival. Let's take a peek at what went on last year.
Tumblr media
Oooh.. swag! Who doesn't enjoy a little swag bag? Especially the swag bags from retailers at Midtown Plaza. Rumour has it, this year's bags contain items from Bench, Sephora, Boathouse, Angles and many more!
And just when you think it couldn't get any better, Extreme Pita & Subway will be providing every ticket holder (tickets are $5, buy them here) with lunch!
Tumblr media
IN FASHION contains two segments, the styling workshop and the hair and makeup tutorial.  Yours truly will be presenting on this years summer trends, and Tammy from Angles Salon will be explaining and demonstrating how to take your look from day to night!
Tumblr media
Tickets are $5 and available HERE! All ticket proceeds are being donated towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Additionally, we have selected 2 cancer survivors for a complete MAKEOVER!! The reveal will be presented at the end of the workshops.
Well, if that doesn't get you to come, maybe one of our hosts will?
Tumblr media
Make sure you get your tickets fast as seating is limited, and you do want that swag bag! Tickets available for purchase HERE!
MAY 29 | IN FASHION | MIDTOWN PLAZA | 12:15PM | 5:15PM |
Discover the 2014 festival schedule and get tickets here.
Also, a big shout out and thanks to Createbyfaith for the IN FASHION visuals

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: CHEL salonspa
Tumblr media
It's amazing how time flies... I remember being a young girl and visiting Kim and Dianne at their very first salon in the early 90s. It stuck with me then how service and perfection were of utmost priority. It's no surprise that over the years their salon and their reputation has became nothing less than stellar.
And so their story begins... Kimball & Dianne Regier started the salonspa on March 1st, 1990. They started with just themselves and one esthetician. It wasn't long until word spread of the great work at what was then called 'Chelsea's Hair Design and Body Rejuvenation', and they soon outgrew the salon and moved to a new 12 chair salon on 8th Street in 1993. Again, buzz was picking up on the salon and in 2000 the team had to make yet another move to house the growing demand for a larger spa and to address the need of more stylists. It was at this point, they became known as CHEL salonspa (much, much easier for for the sake of URL purposes).
Tumblr media
I recently asked Kim how it is he and the staff stay inspired? He simply states, "I think that with creative people, having a team is paramount. We inspire one another, we also look to fashion, architecture, magazines, hair shows, and training across North America for inspiration."
Tumblr media
As mentioned earlier, having the CHEL experience is like no other. It's evident as soon as you walk in the salon, you're welcome. Kim comments, 'We've always been very proud to be known for having an atmosphere where all are welcome and made to feel that they belong... that they matter, as they do. Our team is a wonderful mix of professional, funky, fun, hard working people that have a vast technical and creative skill pool; one that each of us draws from and contributes to on a daily basis.'
Tumblr media
This is the second year CHEL salonspa will be the hair and makeup team for the RUNWAY event at Mercedes Benz (Saturday May 31st) and POSE at River Landing (Sunday June 1st). Last year their work blew our minds, and I can only expect it will happen again this year. Here are some pictures of their amazing work from the 2013 festival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right? Mind blown!
If you've never checked out CHEL salonspa, I ask you... why not? They are one of only a few AVEDA concept salons in the province, they offer a variety of services from hair, spa, makeup, photography, and most importantly... passion. You will undoubtably not regret your decision!
You can book an appointment at (306)477-6200. They are located at 3110 8th Street E #8A in Saskatoon.
Find Chel on Facebook, or at  www.chelsalonspa.com
