Calls for Justice for Aurora’s Violinist Elijah McClain Grow

Elijah McClain was a kind and gentle 23 year old who worked as a massage therapist in Aurora, CO. On his lunch breaks from work, Elijah would go to the animal shelters and play violin for the animals because he thought that they were lonely in their cages and thought that the music would calm them. 

In August 2019, Elijah went to the gas station to buy some iced tea for himself and his cousins. Because he suffered from anemia he would often wear a ski/ runner mask over his face to stay warm. On his way home, the Aurora Police department were called to reports of a “suspicious man.” 

(Warning: for violent description) Elijah was apprehended by a group of three cops, despite committing NO crime and being unarmed. A struggle occurred, and he was held in a very dangerous carotid hold around his neck while he cried for help, cried out that he couldn’t breathe, cried out that he was nonviolent and couldn’t even kill a fly, and was repeatedly throwing up. Elijah weighed a mere 140 pounds. You can hear on the audio footage, an officer instructing another to move their body camera out of view.

While 3 Aurora Police Dept officers violently restrained him they called Aurora Fire Dept, who injected him with ketamine (a powerful drug used to tranquilize horses or in surgeries by a trained anesthesiologist and illegal to be administered by anyone else) even though he was already cuffed and calm.

He went into cardiac arrest , slipped into a coma, and his family was advised to take him off life support 6 days later.

The cops were transferred to another department but never received charges.

Episode 22′ is Asuka’s most tragic episode, one in which she bears witness to her most tragic reality. The Elevator Scene shows this up, front, and center.

The Elevator Scene in Eva’s 22′nd episode ties into Asuka’s personal conundrum. The writing’s on the wall for Asuka on her situation, she comes to the revelation that she’s playing second fiddle to the other pilots as well as Misato and Gendo.

An afterthought.

Asuka realizes herself that her front is rapidly deteriorating and ultimately shallow. It’s not getting her the validation she so desires. Asuka’s losses force her into a quandary: either reach out, even though it means allowing herself to become openly vulnerable. If she does this, it means facing her own traumas again. Two, front as usual, even if selfsame front is breaking apart by the seams. 

Asuka silently steams over these choices…

…until Rei opens up with this:

Rei fully understands that Asuka is in a low spot, a vulnerable spot and Asuka hates it. Rei offers to help due to this realization and the more Asuka snaps back at the offerings, the more Asuka realizes her false personality is a thin veil. 

She realizes the cat’s out of the bag with her true personality and moves from one bad coping mechanism to another.

Arael, just like Rei offers her help, because both of them realize Asuka is at a low point. Asuka here is nude, a glimpse into the fact that she’s at her most vulnerable. Asuka rejects Arael!Asuka and Arael!Asuka dissolves into cotton, just like a doll. 

This subtly parallels to her snapping back at Rei, calling her a unthinking puppet by stating she’ll live on her own. 

But she’s projecting…lying….

Episode 22′ is a look into Asuka’s new, agonizing quandary, one which sees her being vulnerable and revisiting past trauma or assume more bad coping, because she realizes she’s an afterthought in others’s lives.

melody is such a great character. it is so refreshing to see a woman in anime who isn’t skinny/busty/conventionally attractive. furthermore, she isn’t treated as a comic relief character- her appearance is never mocked or used as a punchline. melody has the respect of all of her peers and she deserves it- she’s a hell of a nen user and is one of the kindest and most compassionate characters in the entire series.
