i'm doing this thing where i'm tired of writing on tumblr when there are constant changes to the site that make it stressful to do so. so i will be writing on discord indefinitely. replies are cleaner there and i can be more consistent and have all of my muses in one place which is NICE.

"but it's good right? you like it?" she asks; she liked it so far. there wasn't anything noticeably annoying about the movie they'd started. all in all...corey was less bothered by movies that some people might deem annoying or something to be hated. she tended to just be content in watching whatever was on without becoming obsessed with loving it or hating it. "shows make a better choice i think. more time to explore things." she thought so. often if she did find herself disappointed in a movie it was due to her wanting more of it than the time allotted could offer. "i mean...you liked it enough to think a show would be a good idea?" she's curious, and placing her eyes back on the paused screen as she sits with the waters and sets them to the coffee table. the smell of the wings being hot again has her stomach growling eagerly; hunger reignited. she reached to snag a wing and took a bite, much too hot but far too good to let her care about the burning. she'd handled boiling stews straight down the hatch enough times that this was painful but good. so so good.

Two plates balanced in her palms Kayla maneuvered through the kitchen easily enough, bare feet padding against the cool linoleum flooring. Carefully folding her down at an awkward angle, she sat on the ground without asking for assistance or dropping anything. "There's five of them and rumors of a series in the works." she hummed a chuckle, "There are four books from Bella's perspective, a little side novella from a character we meet in the third movie, and the author rewrote the first book from Edward's perspective." she info dumped, choosing to busy her mouth by taking a bite of a wing, air hissing in between her parting teeth, nerve endings warning her that the bite was entirely too hot.

she wished blockbuster was still a thing; even being a chain that attempted to knock out mom and pop video stores, now it was such a thing of the past that she found herself nostalgically missing the 'chain'. she supposed she should have foreseen that video rentals were a dying breed; the flashy and bright redbox at the neighborhood walmart on the edge of town was something that repulsed her. edge of town, edge of what quin considered town...was really just the edge of everything deemed 'old' and the beginning point of all the 'new' developments of the last fifteen years. part of her hoped the 'new' would spread far enough out that it would just detach from her 'old' and leave her alone. speaking of 'old'. "i don't know...what's new?" she muses, trying to wrack her brain for new trailers she'd seen. she slowed as they approached the family video just to look through the collected of posters that littered the window panes. "did you watch barbie?"

the coffee creamer was tossed into the fridge the moment she walked through the kitchen door. the craving was gone, so was the morning for the most part. caffeine was no longer the 'whim' on her mind. she glanced at the clock on the old microwave and realized...she wasn't going to have to look at it again for a long while. she was meeting up with dani later, and there was enough time between now and then to forget that clocks were even a thing; no need to be riding it with glances every few minutes to ensure it didn't get away from her. her boots scuffed against the dull linoleum. once a bright cream and minty sage checkered...long-since unpolished. she supposed the place was cute for a grandmother but it was just 'home' to her. it was furniture she could have collected at thrift store but instead it wasn't so exciting; simply handed down, sometimes sanded and refinished and then used again until it was worn and in need of more help. she was rather fond of the old matching stove and fridge, however, in the same minty green that matched the floors and had once matched the cabinets, until she had decided it was too much green and had sanded them down to their original knotty pine.
sunlight streamed through faded lace in the kitchen window and she set off back outside, porch steps creaking a few ungodly sounds until she came into purchase with the dirt at the bottom. thus chores began, a rusty bucket with kibble, a soggy hose she dragged through mud and crisp green grass to fill a trough, a sneezing fit that might have set a record for herself while particles of hay flitted through the air around her. just about the time she felt like her throat might close up she was done and her cheeks were flushed. her property dog lay watchful at the end of the driveway, the little cow with his horse besties were talking shit through the fence at the neighbors livestock, and she was getting hungry enough to go make a sandwich. "shit..." maybe now she should check the time. quinn darted back for the kitchen porch.

“oh shit, retro.” she grins a closed the door of her truck behind her and brought the engine to a roaring life. there were a lot of candies like that, that she forgot even existed. the reminder brought a nostalgic warmth to spread through her, a pink that she even felt on her cheeks. “i haven’t seen those in awhile…but i bet we can find ‘em.” she couldn’t say for sure though; but she was willing to bet somewhere in town would have them, if not the theater. before she pulled away she leaned on the frame of her open window. “there’s a dusty old party city…like a block that way. they have a lot of random candy.” she flashed a smile and then put the truck in gear and started out of the lot and on top the road in the direction of home. suddenly the coffee creamer in the passenger seat seemed futile because the craving for coffee was gone with the morning.

Dani couldn’t remember the last time she’d been to a Party City, there was a vague memory of the store sometime in her teen years, something along the lines of her cousin needing a wig for a halloween costume. It seemed that the store wasn’t as popular as it was when she was younger, especially around Halloween. Dani hadn’t gotten to do much Halloweening in in her teen years, she’d been allowed to dress up and go trick or treating when she was still small but the year she turned eight her parents had become more devout in their Catholicism and the holiday had been deleted from their calendar. She’d always loved the fall, the chill in the air, the rain, and the changing of colors, the excuse to layer and bundle up. She remembered that first year, being the only kid in her class to not wear a costume to school, she was still given a small bag of candy by her teacher but her parents picked her up early and she wasn’t allowed to attend the fall festival her school put on every year. She wasn’t sure why she hadn’t dressed up since then, there was no one or anything stopping her from doing so since she left. Maybe this year she’d actually do something, even if just for herself, she was a long ways away from the fall but it was still something to ponder. Quinn seemed interesting, a lot warmer than most were to her especially given the circumstances. She wasn’t going to pretend to know the least about the other woman but there was this gravity about her that seemed to pull at Dani, made her want to linger in her orbit. She knew she’d have to stay on the edges of it all, for her own good but she couldn’t help her curiosity, her need to observe.
The walk to the party store was quite, but still scenic though if she was being honest she wasn’t sure there was anything you could do in a town like this that wouldn’t be scenic. The nostalgia of the town paired with the backdrop of the mountains made her feel like she was in one of those coming of age movies about some high school girl living in some little town with dreams of the big city. Pushing the door open, Dani understood that Quinn had been very accurate when she’d called the place dusty. The store seemed somehow sterile even with all the colors plastered on the walls, the checkered floor that had obviously once been black and white was a shade of light and dark grey, the display balloons stapled to the walls had lost their shine beneath a thick layer of dust, the aisle seemed to have the bare minimum of items, only one employee leaning over the counter boredly, thick flames and a scraggly mustache. “Welcome to party city, let me know if you need anything.” the man spoke in a monotonous voice, obviously ready to go home. She smiled awkwardly, her eyes quickly finding the candy Quinn had mentioned, and grabbing a small basket to fill with random handfuls, her fingers feeling grimy and gritty from the dust that seemed create a thin film over the wrappers, trying her best to pick from the bottom of the bowls to avoid as much dust as possible. He wrung her up quickly, and silently and she was out the door as quickly as possible, the deep urge to wash her hands crawling across her skin.

her head perked up a little; taking an interest in the idea of spending the day along the lake or one of the many streams that ran through west elizabeth. "that sounds nice, actually." she murmurs, quick feather-light brush of her lips to kayla's shoulder once more and luna shifted herself upright a bit, releasing kayla and allowing her to be free from how luna had been holding her and kissing on her. she liked the idea of an early start most days, never one to sleep in late. "should we leave camp set up here then? maybe just take a little with us, enough for the day?" they could return here at nightfall. it wasn't common for campsites to be robbed because most took their valuables when they left for the daylight hours. and there was always puppernickle and chorizo to keep watch. they'd been known to chase off bears and packs of wolves.

her eyes moved to exposed skin on kayla’s arm, a patch just below her shoulder where shadows were surfacing in the shapes of the branches somewhere above the canvas sheltering them. she liked the area surrounding the lake; she liked a lot of areas they’d traveled through, and of all of those…the lake did seem to be more quiet. in truth she could see them in so many places, and maybe that was why they had yet to settle anywhere just yet. there was still a tangle of eagerness to explore, in her stomach. “north of donner falls…it’s nice too.” she liked the color of the water there, the bright blue against the red rock, and still the backdrop of dense evergreens and snowy peaks. luna hummed contently, “we should go to the lake today.” she brushed her lips lightly over kayla’s shoulder. “we could fish.”
.
Tumblr media
“We could fish.” Kayla hummed in agreement, her smile widening and eyes filling with amusement and affection, she wouldn’t mind a quick swim either, the weather had been on the warmer side, her days usually ending with her shirt clinging to the small of her back, a hankerchief dabbing at the back of her neck and her upper lips, a cool dip and some hot fish sounded perfect. “We could spend the night up there.” she suggested, imagining the moonlight streaming down across the lake, the orange of their small fire lighting up the earth and casting shadows.

voice is not as confident as she would like it. but it is what lincoln told her to say. she is pretty certain she got it right. or at least enough for them to understand. hopefully. she is going to have to trust these people are as kind as he promised. she can’t say she’ll blame them if they turn her away. she’s an outsider. it’s one thing to welcome your own, another to take in some girl who fell from the sky and can barely speak your language. octavia swallows as her eyes focus on the woman before her. luna. it has to be her, she matches the pictures in lincoln’s journal.   “  lincoln, ”  she pauses, trying to remember words he taught her. she should have paid more attention.  “  em…please tell me you understand english.  ”

brown eyes squinted; she’s distrusting even on the best and brightest of days...
someone has sent this girl; someone has directed her tongue as to what to say. it could be any small handful of connections she maintains with other clans, but she’s quick of mind and she’s up to date on most gossip that trickles her way; rumors.
there may be a few she knows within land-dwelling clans, but one who’s been said to be, as this girl very quickly adds in, communicating with english speakers. sky...people. “i find it more interesting.” luna answers clearly, though...her accent thickly curls around the edges in a way this girl’s does not. “linkon sent you, then...?” her question is hardly one. she trusted linkon with every inch of her life and every breath...so it’s almost an accusation the way trust and distrust clash in her eyes now.

she wasn't sure if a there was a diner around that would have what dani was craving, but she wasn't above searching down the street or above making requests to a kitchen staff just to come up with the closest they could manage. it wasn't a big request. "that's the thing with diners, they should be full menu all hours of the day, or night." she mutters. 'should' was maybe the operative word, but she felt that it was a basic prerequisite for a diner establishment. "we'll find something." she felt sure enough, whether it was determination or just her own mental moodiness at the moment...sari couldn't say. did it really matter the difference if it yielded the desired results? as they neared the street she started searching the windows beside restaurant doors for the menus they often plastered up on display.

she just wanted to go back to the time before she’d made dani so uncomfortable; she could say she was sorry over and over again but...had she even done that in the right way? and would doing so now just shine a blinding light on something they wanted to just let go? would it make it even more uncomfortable. in the moment she really just hoped physically moving forward would allow them to emotionally and mentally, or whatever, move forward. as she got out of the van the cold damp air cleared her head, and when she stretched her body a bit...she was grateful to find that she hadn’t slept as poorly as she had feared. what little bit of soreness she’d acquired from sleeping in the passenger seat of the van had been chased away by the few hours she’d gotten stretched out on the warm rug on the floor nearer to the space heater. she felt fairly good. her hands jammed down into her pockets and she set her eyes on the nearest street corner. cars passed there, the streets sloppy from rain, a few people walking down the sidewalk in light jackets. she got her bearings fairly quickly as she approached; there were a few cafes on this street, some thrift shops, a few fancier boutiques further down; they’d be able to find a place to eat, especially at this hour. nothing looked busy. she scuffed her boots coming to a stop and turned back towards the van, seeing dani emerging...sari quickened her pace. “i don’t know about you...but i could go for some kind of breakfast slop of hashbrowns and eggs...” she eyed dani lightly as she reached her. “anything sound good?”
Tumblr media
Hands buried in her pockets in an attempt to warm her chilled fingertips, Dani was usually a huge fan of mornings like this but today all she wanted was some goddamn sunglasses and a handful of Excedrin "I know it's not breakfast but I'm totally craving a sloppy joe, and like elementary school mashed potatoes." Sari's use of the word sloppy to describe the breakfast she wanted having sparked the thought in her mind, the idea of soft bread and warm ooey gooey sauced burger meat sounded like heaven coating her raw and sore throat, paired with some hot sauce it might even help the sinuses she could feel beginning to ache and stuff her nose.

“really? wh…” she was going to press and ask ‘why’ even after kayla mentioned the roof but instead she cut herself off and glanced up at the ceiling with distrust blatant in her eyes. “i was going to check the yard for a century 21 sign…” she found it had…charm; albeit of the rusty musty variety. “it’s probably fine.” she says with more conviction. “i can climb up there, you can explore more. i know a lot about roofs.” she gave a small shrug, maybe seeming a little desperate to stay out longer and explore more.

She took advantage of the time it would take the other woman to reach her to start at clearing an area for them to build their temporary shelter, putting material she thought could be useful in a small pile by where she hoped they would build their fire for the night. Thinking over what other female contestants she knew of that had a build similar to her, she was one of four female contestants that season, one woman was built very solidly and was tall, at least six foot two she was pretty sure was named Anna, making Kayla feel tiny in comparison, then a blonde that was just a bit thinner than Kayla, a bit shorter named Brooke that absolutely rubbed her the wrong way, but the woman below seemed to be the dark-haired woman below she was like ninety nine percent sure was named Corey, one of the only people Kayla couldn’t really get a good read on.
She wouldn’t say that she was sizing people up during training and prep for the season but she was also definitely sizing people up, it would be a tactical mistake not to. She watched how comfortable people felt handling certain materials, people’s willingness to listen to the instructors and local guides when they were being taught about local flora and fauna, when regulations were being discussed basic first aid being taught. She measured their confidence, noted the contestants that seemed to be arrogant, smug and over confident in their abilities which in her experience meant they would be the most likely to make stupid mistakes, the one’s to slip and accidentally cut themselves on their hatchets and knives, the ones’ who would think themselves immune to cholera and dysentery. She had noticed a bit of over confidence that seemed to emanate from Corey often making little comments under her breath about the people around her and very obviously judgmental of the others in the room, she was cocky but not in a way that she seemed to think she was above learning, which was enough for Kayla to think she could have definitely been paired with worse, like the big burly full bellied man that had made a stupid comment about how she probably had no idea how to process an animal.
She could hear the footsteps growing closer and closer as she started scoping out what trees she’d like to start working on cutting down to build a tripod for their tarp. She couldn’t help the amused smile that tugged at her lips, not sure if the brunette realized how loud a voice could be in the silence of the woods or if she had meant to be heard. There was a weird part of her that was kind of nervous about formally meeting her partner and was just now really realizing that she would have to deal with this person constantly for what she was thinking would be at least two months, she didn’t even see her roommate that often. She didn’t think she had spent that kind of time with anyone since she was probably a toddler and needed adult supervision.
Tumblr media
she thought it could have been a lot worse, but that would have been an insult to her partner, because corey remembered the other contestants vividly. she had spent a lot of time breaking down their choices and methods, whether right or in her opinion wrong, even their names. she’d always had a habit of storing names away in her head after she’d scoured through the files in her head that had memorized names, origins and meanings when she was a child. it really was pointless but it was just something she’d found interesting when she was little, and it had stayed with her as a way of entertaining herself or distracting herself when her mind didn’t feel stimulated, or when her body wasn’t allowed to be stimulated. sit still, corey. she could too...but nothing in her head was ever still. so she circled back now as she met kayla’s eyes, now that her boots reached level, and higher, ground. it could have been a lot worse but....that was an insult. in reality, she didn’t think it could get any better. corey released the heavy trunk of equipment she’d had to pull up and one of the duffle bags from her shoulder. with that weight gone she barely noticed her backpack still on her back.
kayla with a ‘k’; crown of laurels. in hebrew it was akin to god-like, and though corey didn’t hold to any religion in any facet, she still acknowledged that many names stemmed from faiths through history and branched outward from there. her mind took kayla’s name and turned it over, from laurels to the way she knew laurel crowns were often depicted in horse-shoe shapes, and she liked horses.
in this moment there was requirement that she keep her body idle, so her thoughts as quickly turned over to tasks at hand. kayla was clearing the area and separating debris, dry twigs and bracken were scarce, but not nonexistent. there were dry bits of rough bark underneath larger pieces of branch so she started to help by pulling those bigger pieces underneath coverings of trees. “d’you bring a tarp too?” she asked, pausing to let her backpack slump off of her shoulder to the moss at her feet. “i can use mine so we have a place to keep wood dry...” that would be absolutely as pressing as having shelter, but there was more than just that one option available to them. combining the tarps could equal the same effect, a shelter large enough to house them and allow them to dry wood. as much as corey could stay inside her head and hold conversations with herself, she knew communicating was going to be vital. “what do you feel good at?” she starts. “like...shelters or foraging...” sharing their strengths could help them figure out what they should both be putting energy into. “m’not the best builder but i can snare and track.” she admits. even then...she’d have to learn this area too and there would no doubt be a curve for that. she still knew that all tasks would likely be better with both of their help, but she thought it better to at least know where one of them might not be as helpful so the other could balance that with more skill.

“Ready to go?” Kayla asked, peeking her head out into the hallway, reaching blindly behind her door for a worn leather purse she was using more and more rarely. “I think I’m more and more up to the challenge of ordering one of everything on the menu.” she laughed, “That being said the more I think about it the more I think that they would absolutely hate us.” her smile tugging further, she was absolutely not willing to be banned from somewhere that she ate so regularly. “Are you ready Juneau?” she tried not baby talk the pup but her voice instinctively raised in pitch.
Tumblr media
.
“m’not opposed to menu surfing for hours.” she wasn’t going to complain about trying everything, and she didn’t feel rushed to be anywhere else when it was time spent with kayla. corey wouldn’t be in town forever but she was here now, and she was with the reason for her being here. corey checked the back pocket of her jeans once more to insure her debit card was there and then she had juneau secured with her leash enough to step outside the door with her. even though the pup didn’t know where they were going...she was just excited to be going, period, and with kayla talking to her..her fluffy tail swished and her paws became a bit more springy in step as they made their way outside. “you should come visit me sometime...after i leave...i mean.” because kayla couldn’t very well visit her when corey was here visiting kayla. well, she could but corey wouldn’t be there yet. she shook away the ramble from her mind and let her eyes adjust to the sky and their surroundings, neon lights were starting to come to life and it looked like the colors in the sky were trying to mimic those hues but falling short; the encroaching black would eventually win.
