❝ Fool. ❞ Byakuya's judgement was calm, yet harsh. Since his wisdom had been so arrogantly disregarded, perhaps some stricter words were in order. ❝ It is not for you to protect the balance of the worlds. That is the job of the Shinigami, and we do not require your help. Leave these powers you seek behind. I will not ask you again. ❞ AS IF he was "asking" in the first place. Byakuya did not ever make suggestions. He always ordered. He always spoke the truth. As if he would taint his pride with lies.
He was not a stranger to MORTALS seeking powers that they were not meant to have. He had his doubts of whether or not it was justified that so much now rested on Kurosaki Ichigo's young shoulders. He too had had the best of intentions when he looked for power, and now... It was a burden that only death would make him part from.
This was why humans should not look for power.
They were not meant to possess it. Not like Byakuya, who was born with great powers. Born to be one of the strongest of all. Striving for a fate that was not meant for you... Could bring nothing but misery.
@scnkei asked; "You reach for powers that are not meant for mortals."
Tumblr media
As a matter of practice, he had always been the sort to press up against boundaries, pushing the limits of what was known to make discoveries anew. Overstepping when necessary, where arrogance had once been his armour, insulating him first from the viperous climate of corporate sabotage, followed later by his very own ventures, time as well as his own follies had seen such protection bend and break. As useful as glass against the tumult that surged into his life, sweeping away all that he had cherished.
Set up with a fresh remit and vastly changed circumstances, armed with experience, his drive to learn has become a force that's been quartered and bound, kept in line by an unflinching will and a need to maintain dimensional parity. Having made the transition from discovery to prevention, with lessons learnt, he barely flinches at the accusation levelled at him, words that take firm aim at the scorched paths his need for new knowledge had led him down.
"Someone had to do it. I can't stand by and let everything fall apart."
Still bearing the open, festering wounds of his catastrophic failures, he proves to be an inattentive student. Rather than heed the other's warning, he deafens himself to their words to remain steadfast in his unflinching ways. With the multi-verse in danger, he needed to mend what had become ripped and torn open, connecting worlds that should've remained separated. Never once stopping to consider if such actions truly helped at all. Or if the forces he utilised came with consequences of their own.
Too much was at stake.
"Never again."

The morning light was faint. Cold, from the clouds that blocked the sunrise. As if set on a timer, Byakuya's eyelashes fluttered. He always woke up at the exact same time every day. The very first thing he felt was warmth. He should be used to it by now, but somehow it was still a surprise for him to find that he was sharing his bed with someone. Renji's body was warm. His reiatsu was warm. He was still asleep. It was easy to tell from the steady rise and fall of his chest. Renji was laying on his back, sprawled out comfortably. He was taking up enough space so that Byakuya had been sleeping with his head against the other's shoulder. No wonder his face felt so warm.
Renji looked peaceful when he slept. When he was awake, he'd often wear a subtle frown between his brows, whether it was to squint against the sun, or from focusing on his work. When he slept... Well, that was a different story. Even the angle of his forehead tattoos appeared softer. Byakuya shifted his gaze, realizing he'd been staring at his face. He looked down instead, unable to help himself. To Renji's neck. More tattoos with sharp angles. Byakuya had kissed his neck only a few hours ago, but as usual - there were no marks left behind. Byakuya was always gentle in his affection towards him. Even if, sometimes, an impulse to imprint a mark on him grabbed him. Renji was HIS.
Speaking of marks. Renji had only pulled the covers about half-way up his chest ( as always, he ran hot even when he slept ), so his chest was more or less exposed. The tattoos here were quite intricate. Byakuya was tempted to follow them with his fingertips. He loved the symmetry. The angle. How they ended at the centre of his chest, dividing his torso so perfectly. He wanted to touch the inked skin.
A mark suddenly appeared. Like the first star on the evening sky. Then another. And another. Until ALL Byakuya could see were tiny, tiny scars. They covered Renji's entire torso. Of course, Byakuya knew they were there. He'd always known, but somehow he could never see them unless his eye suddenly caught one. There were so many of them. Carefully, Byakuya reached out. He brushed his fingers over a few centimetres of Renji's chest, counting how many scars this small touch would reach. One, two, three, four, five...
They'd talked about this. Renji HAD forgiven him. But truly - Byakuya could never forgive himself. It was almost as if he wished he too would wear a scar from their battle. He wondered how he would've felt about having marks from Zabimaru's teeth across his chest. That would never happen. Not because Renji's fangs would not reach him, but because Renji would never do that to him. He was too gentle.
Byakuya leaned over, his lips touching Renji's jaw.
❝ Renji, wake up. ❞ He could've let him sleep a little longer, but selfishly, he wanted him awake. Wanted to be softly touched by him so that he could forget about the guilt the sight of the scars had brought forth. Wanted to be loved. / @monkifuraibo .

He is not really sure what to do about it.. This knowledge. He also is not sure if Byakuya realizes what day it is. A year. They're been together for a year. Obviously they've been together for longer than that as captain and lieutenant, but.. It has been a year since Byakuya accepted his feelings. Maybe Byakuya does not even realize; he probably hadn't noted the date back then. But Renji had.
So now he just.. Doesn't know what to do with this giddy energy thrumming through him all day. It is just a regular office day, after all. And he hasn't bought a gift, because it seemed silly, especially if Byakuya hadn't realized what today was. But he had planned to stay over today, and, after the working day is done, and they start a by-now familiar ritual of post-work relaxation, Renji insists they take a walk in the gardens. It is still a bit chilly out this time of year, but spring's coming is evident. The garden is alive, and beautiful. Renji did bring a thermos of tea and two cups. He wanted to at least note the memorable passing of time. Just a few months ago they were broken up, and he never would have thought this possible. But now..
They stop, and as per usual, their gaze is drawn to the sky and the moon. A waxing crescent today.. Golden eyes shift over to Byakuya's face, illuminated by the pale light, and the warm lanterns hung up around the garden. He pours them both a cup of hot tea and smiles as he hands Byakuya one. "Happy anniversary."
The moon above them, like a silver hook. Golden light from the lanterns spread across the pathway through the garden, was a contrast. Like him and Renji, maybe. There was a chill in the air, causing flowers to close up and not let their perfume out at night. When Renji had suggested a walk through the gardens, Byakuya had gladly joined him. It was an activity that Byakuya very much enjoyed, and he usually walked alone. Naturally, it was better if he could walk together with Renji. Everything was better with him, Byakuya had come to learn. The small things. The bigger things. And, perhaps, especially - the everyday things.
They stopped at their usual spot, where the view of the sky was best. Though, tonight they couldn't see the stars as easily, the lanterns competing with that faint light. Byakuya looked away from the sky. Away from the moon, to look at Renji instead. He was beautiful, of course. Byakuya preferred to see him in sunlight. To see the sharp contrast of his tattoos, and the gold in his eyes. The crimson vibrancy of his hair. Renji's gaze too shifted, meeting his for a moment. Byakuya wondered if Renji preferred to see him in moonlight. It would be quite fitting.
Renji poured a cup of tea. Byakuya held out his hand to accept it. He didn't think he'd ever had tea at night, in the garden. The cup was warm to his cold fingertips. He'd rather hold Renji's hand than the cup, but oh well.
When Renji spoke, Byakuya did, for a moment, not understand what he meant. Which anniversary was he speaking of? Then, he understood. He had not known the specific date, but apparently - it was today. One year since their feelings aligned. One year since Renji more or less forced his way into his life. Their relationship was built upon frustration on Renji's side, and confusion on his. Not anymore though. Byakuya could hardly believe it had only been one year. How could his entire world change so rapidly? It would've been frightening, had it not been for the fact that he trusted Renji completely. Wherever the other would lead him, surely, it would be safe.
He didn't know how to portray softness, but he hoped Renji could see it in him. At least a little.
❝ I was unaware of the specific date. ❞ But now, he would never forget it. ❝ Next year, let us make arrangements. ❞ For a form of celebration. Or at least a marking of the day.

txchikaze:
— He never was very good at mincing his words, or truly garnering the effects they had on people. But Byakuya’s face was usually illegible to begin with, so Kensei did not blame his own shortcomings for this. Now, though, he could tell he’d hit a nerve. That had not been his intention { as so often }, but he supposed he was clumsy when it came to such topics. “I did not mean to offend you.” He precedes his reply with that. Though he figures it will help very little. Whenever he’s put his foot in his mouth he’s not been able to fully recover from it. Then again, he usually dug his heels in rather than admit his mistake. Christ.. Shuuhei had really changed him, hadn’t he?
Kuchiki Byakuya said something that struck a chord with Kensei. ‘Even were I to take a wife, there is no guarantee that I would have children.’ Wasn’t it terribly unfair of their families to ask them to give up certain love for the possibility of an heir? And following that.. Byakuya was right.. There are others carrying their noble blood in their veins. When Kensei had been exiled, another had been lined up to sit the clanshead position in his stead { though his grandfather had resumed the duty when he’d disappeared, and had planned to do so until death }. Some cousin from a smaller Muguruma branch would follow him. Children of uncles.. There were some. It didn’t have to be him. Perhaps he’d given them enough.
Kuchiki Byakuya had gone another route, Kensei supposed. He had decided that he could rule with his fukutaichou by his side. Perhaps he could. But Kensei’s family would never accept it. So then, there was a choice to be had. Either he stuck with his family; those who had raised him and taught him everything he knew; or he chose Shuuhei, who made him happy..
Tumblr media
After a long time of internal turmoil and external silence, he finally turns towards the Kuchiki again. He nods solemnly when the noble lays out his plans so clearly. At least he knows what he wants. “Your standing by him like that is admirable.” Kensei admits. “I hope it turns out as you say.” It may seem as though he has made a complete one-eighty from his prior stance, but really.. He’d been on Kuchiki and Abarai’s side all along, hasn’t he? He just.. Needs to figure out how to be brave enough to give up the comfort of the well-known. His routine.. Perhaps if he, for once, learned to lean on his adopted family…
Byakuya spoke to Muguruma with clarity and certainty. CONFIDENCE, they called it. Byakuya did everything with confidence. Even when he felt uncertain, he would step forward with the certainty that what he was doing was the correct thing. Even in this instance, when he truly... Did not know if he was doing the RIGHT THING. Being with Renji was... Selfish. He knew that. Perhaps that was why he so desperately wanted to believe that things would turn out well. That Renji would bring his family honour.
Surprisingly enough, Muguruma did a 180. Byakuya had expected more questions, more accusations from the older captain. But instead he was receiving... Well wishes? He was calling his loyalty to Renji admirable. Byakuya did not think that was the right word, for in reality, it was nothing but selfish. He was choosing his own happiness in front of that of his family. What was admirable about that? It was strange for Muguruma to change his opinion so drastically. Byakuya wondered if, perhaps, the other was just trying to appease him. Though, judging from the silence prior, it really seemed like he’d put some thought into this. Had Byakuya’s words made THAT big of an impact?
❝ How quickly you change your mind. ❞ He said, not caring if it sounded disrespectful.

Momo says, gritting her teeth. "I am sorry. I was out of line commenting on your dignity, and it will not happen again." She holds up a platter of hard cookies. "May I offer you some chocolate chip cookies as an olive branch?"
Tumblr media
He could tell the apology was not genuine, but that was not the point of this exercise. Byakuya COULD NOT STAND insubordination. Especially when it came from someone who had not earned the right to speak freely and openly to him. Everything about him demanded respect. From his title as Captain of the Rokubantai, to his noble blood. A Fukutaichou such as Hinamori should know her place. He respected her for how she had stood up for Renji. Loyalty to your friends was not something Byakuya dismissed as worthless. However, it would not mean she could get a free pass on how she spoke to him.
❝ Apology accepted. ❞ That would be the end of their disagreement, and they would speak no more of it. He had no wish to punish her further, but if she stepped on his pride - he would do it. He would have no choice. ❝ I am not fond of sweets, so I will decline. But I am certain Abarai-Fukutaichou would appreciate them. People say he has a sweet tooth. ❞ He spoke calmly. He didn't wish to give her more reason to be rude towards him ( it would only make things worse for her ), so he was trying to shift the situation into something that would benefit them both. If she kept being disagreeable? She would find herself in a jail cell for insubordination.

Byakuya couldn't understand him. This had become painfully obvious to Renji, and the more he thought about it, the more he realized it was trying to explain the colour blue to a blind man. But regardless of the class issue affecting their differing opinions on the matter at hand, Byakuya had been treating him mostly as his lieutenant while they argued, rather than his boyfriend. Renji hated that. It was fine when they were at work, or even when they were off, but happened to appear in public together. But here, in the privacy of one of their own homes? He loathed being spoken to like he was just another subordinate.
"Gladly!" He shot back, when Byakuya bid him to leave, and he did not dawdle. He slid the door shut with such force on his way out that it slammed harshly, and bounced back open, rather than staying shut.
There was relief when Renji left (even though he SLAMMED the door shut). Byakuya quietly went over and closed the door properly. Carefully, because he was upset and if he let his emotions get the better of him, he too might end up abusing the door. It slid closed, and he was alone in his bedroom. He let out a small breath, feeling strangely tired. It was the disappointment, he supposed. He didn't want to think about it. He'd rather move on, instead of dwelling. He went back to the ritual of changing his clothes and combing his hair before bed.
It was hard not to think while he brushed the comb through the silky strands. What should he do about this? The disrespect Renji had showed him... It went past insubordination. He had not just disappointed him as his Fukutaichou, but - as his lover as well. It was the latter that was the worst feeling for Byakuya. He didn't want to bring the subject up again. That would only lead to another argument the next time they saw each other. Which would be tomorrow. But - could he just let this go? Let it pass, just like that? What else could he do?
This was his own fault, he decided. HE was the one who had so blindly fallen in love with Renji, and given up everything for him, without even knowing his true colours. He felt foolish. He was a fool. When was he going to learn? There was nothing he could do about the reality of things, so he would simply move on. The light that shone on Renji had been shifted. He'd see him differently now. Still, he had chosen him, and - he was never going back on his word.

"Personal gain..?" He turned away from the window at Byakuya's words. While they were not.. Surprising, coming from his captain, they still stunned him for a good few beats of his suddenly pounding heart. Something flared in his chest, and flickered equally in his amber eyes.
His voice was uncharacteristically cool when he spoke next. "Ya think I fought my way up from th'rotten streets'f th'Rukongai, steppin' over death an' decay on th'way here, 'cause I believed it was my duty?" He couldn't help but scoff at how ridiculous a thought that was. Surely even Byakuya could not believe he was that perfect? This was the first time Renji realized his captain { and equally his lover } may have an idealized view of him in his mind. "I came here to be safe. I came ta be happy." Safety was the primary concern back then, of course. But he's always chased happiness, too. "I did not come here ta be judged fer thinkin' strong, hardworkin' people shouldn't go ta hell, by someone who hasn't had to worry about where his next meal came from even a day in his life!" He isn't speaking just of himself. Rukia, Shuuhei, Rangiku, and Hinamori.. They all were facing the same fate, weren't they?
Byakuya's disappointment would have cut him deeply any other time, but he was too angry, and felt too righteous to really process the words. They did not apply to him, somehow. "I am not greedy for wantin' my life ta be enjoyable, an' fer thinkin' I deserve better than eternal fuckin' damnation."
He'd made him angry. There had been a time when Renji would not have addressed him in this manner. Byakuya still was not used to the other taking such liberties. Renji was misunderstanding him too. Byakuya didn't think that Renji had worked his way up the ladder because of a sense of duty. However, the other HAD questioned "what is the point of life", as if their duties as Shinigami was somehow invalid simply because they'd be sent to Hell upon their death. It didn't really matter whether or not Renji misunderstood him or not. There was NO excusing the way he spoke to him. The way he disregarded his opinion, simply because Byakuya was born a noble. It was the first time Renji had done this. It --- Hurt. Byakuya rarely experienced this emotion, but he recognized it straight away, because of how strong it was.
❝ Leave. ❞ There was no reason to continue this conversation. Byakuya didn't want to argue further with him and have him say more things that would not only hurt him, but lessen his opinion of Renji. He had sacrificed everything for this man, who now so selfishly stood here proclaiming that all of it meant NOTHING because they would, in thousands of years, end up in Hell to keep all the worlds safe.
❝ I do not wish to speak with you anymore, or spend the night with you. ❞ He spoke in the cold tone he'd use for everyone. It came automatically when he was suppressing his emotions to this extent.

"We already are the ones givin' our lives on the battlefield." Renji counters. At least, he imagines that is what will inevitably become their demise. The chances are far higher of that happening, than his dying of old age, or falling of a goddamn stepladder and breaking his neck, or something similarly bizarre and accidental. They risk their lives nearly every day, and for what? To end up in hell? A place of eternal suffering? Exactly how was that a fair balance?
He gets up from the futon and starts pacing back and forth along the length of the room. "Fine, yes, duty, but how is any of that worth it if it lands you in hell? What the hell is life s'posed ta be then? Suffer now and suffer after death? Why? Then what's the use of life if it's just.. Suffering?" He understands now why this is not common knowledge. Many would lay down their swords if they knew. Rather to be a farmer, or salesman of some kind for the chance of another cycle, instead of risking a permanent end in eternal damnation. Renji certainly is rethinking his ambitions due to this one, very important, fact. Then again.. It is already too late for him. Hell is his certain end. Though, he certainly could try to stretch his last life a little longer by.. Quitting his job. See the world, maybe, rather than just hollows and offices. He's stopped pacing and stares, pensively, out through the window, across the Kuchiki gardens.
Byakuya would disagree. It was RARE for a captain-class Shinigami to lose his life. It was not that uncommon for unseated Shinigami to die fighting Hollow. And they would get a new "cycle" of their soul, so what was the problem? He watched as Renji got up, and began pacing. He truly couldn't understand why Renji was so upset about this issue. It was just yet another subject where they differed. Byakuya would do his duty and sacrifice everything for the sake of his pride. Renji... Was strangely obsessed with an "eternal life". It was almost.. Unsettling. Like he was seeing a part of him he hadn't seen before. He always thought of him as selfless, but - maybe he was not.
He turned his gaze away from Renji, finding his pacing off-putting. Just like his words. He had tried being understanding. Tried being patient with him. There was only so much Byakuya could tolerate.
❝ I was unaware you did your duty for personal gain. Going to hell is a SMALL PRICE to pay in order to keep the balance of the world. Your words are selfish, greedy and childish. I'm disappointed in you, Renji. ❞ Perhaps he was being harsh, but he just wanted him to stop. Stop ruining his character like this. This was not how his Fukutaichou OR his lover was supposed to act. These were not words that should fall from Renji's mouth. Byakuya wasn't even looking at him. He didn't want to.
