On a Thursday afternoon in January, Robert Julian-Borchak Williams was in his office at an automotive supply company when he got a call from the Detroit Police Department telling him to come to the station to be arrested. He thought at first that it was a prank.

An hour later, when he pulled into his driveway in a quiet subdivision in Farmington Hills, Mich., a police car pulled up behind, blocking him in. Two officers got out and handcuffed Mr. Williams on his front lawn, in front of his wife and two young daughters, who were distraught. The police wouldn’t say why he was being arrested, only showing him a piece of paper with his photo and the words “felony warrant” and “larceny.”

His wife, Melissa, asked where he was being taken. “Google it,” she recalls an officer replying.

The police drove Mr. Williams to a detention center. He had his mug shot, fingerprints and DNA taken, and was held overnight. Around noon on Friday, two detectives took him to an interrogation room and placed three pieces of paper on the table, face down.

“When’s the last time you went to a Shinola store?” one of the detectives asked, in Mr. Williams’s recollection. Shinola is an upscale boutique that sells watches, bicycles and leather goods in the trendy Midtown neighborhood of Detroit. Mr. Williams said he and his wife had checked it out when the store first opened in 2014.

The detective turned over the first piece of paper. It was a still image from a surveillance video, showing a heavyset man, dressed in black and wearing a red St. Louis Cardinals cap, standing in front of a watch display. Five timepieces, worth $3,800, were shoplifted.

“Is this you?” asked the detective.

The second piece of paper was a close-up. The photo was blurry, but it was clearly not Mr. Williams. He picked up the image and held it next to his face.

“No, this is not me,” Mr. Williams said. “You think all Black men look alike?”

Mr. Williams knew that he had not committed the crime in question. What he could not have known, as he sat in the interrogation room, is that his case may be the first known account of an American being wrongfully arrested based on a flawed match from a facial recognition algorithm, according to experts on technology and the law.

-Bakugou gets confused by Iida’s weird hand motions.

- he often wonders what birds sound like because he’s read so much about the way they sing.

-He knows how to sing twinkle twinkle little star. He often sings it with out thinking while doing something he enjoys like cooking. Kirishima is the one who hears him the most…only because he sneaks up behind him.

-He makes sure he always has at least 2 pockets on his clothes so he doesnt have to talk to anyone.

-Deku likes leaving little notes about what the teachers are talking about all around Bakugou’s desk.

-Bakugou teaching people swear words instead of what they want to learn.

Why Bakugou doesn’t like people walking in front of him

Bakugou is hard of hearing due to his quirk, so when people are in front of him, he can’t tell if they’re talking. Their voices are projected forward, so if they’re behind him, he’s a little more likely to hear them. But he still prefers being able to see people’s lips so he knows exactly when to focus on their voice.

i just woke up but i saw a bunch of deaf!bakugou headcanons and none of them had anything about bakugou and hagakure in particular so i’m just gonna:

-hagakure is bakugou’s worst nightmare

-he can’t??  see her goddamn face??  and her voice is a pitch that he can barely hear on the best of days WITH his hearing aids, he’s fucked basically

-when the rest of the class is learning sign language hagakure is there too, and when she wears her gloves it’s fine (sort of… you kind of have to assume where her face is and what expression she’s making but she makes do).  she starts wearing her gloves around the classroom to help him out

-but when she’s full stealth?  WHOOO no

-there is zero communication between them

-she has, in desperation, licked her fingers and stuck them in the dirt so that the dirt would stick to them and she could sign to him

-afterward when they learned what happened the whole class laughed hysterically 

-now bakugou’s hero costume has a little bag of chalk on his shoulder–if she needs to she can reach in, powder up, sign to him, and clap the chalk off again

-it’s not the best system but the chalk is also flame retardant so he can use it to put out any small fires his quirk causes

-once they can actually talk, the two of them find that they actually have a lot to talk about

-mostly because they don’t agree on A N Y T H I N G

-like, literally nothing

-they have differing opinions about fucking t-shirts okay like nothing

-their favorite activity when they wind up hanging out is arguing

-some of the class doesn’t get why they’d hang out just to argue but they both find the experience very satisfying
