Web Page Ranking - 5 Steps To Improve On Page SEO
Web page ranking, or where your site is found in the search results of search engines like Google, is the key to free traffic. Think about it, most people find web pages by searching for them, right? I bet that is how you found this page. So, if you want to improve your web page ranking and generate free traffic, the first thing you should take care of is your on page search engine optimization. And before I go further, let me define a couple of terms for you.
Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) - The process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO is generally broken down into two parts - on page SEO and off page SEO.
Tumblr media
On Page SEO - Creating your site with the goal of making it search engine friendly. These are factors that are completely within your control.
Off Page SEO - Factors such as incoming links (or backlinks), page rank, anchor text of the incoming links that are not on your site, and therefore somewhat outside of your control. Basically, the search engines look at how many other sites are linking to your page when they are determining your web page ranking. Generally, the more sites linking to your page, the more popular the search engines think that your page is.
As you might have guessed, on page search engine optimization is much easier to do than off page. Unfortunately it is also a much smaller piece of the puzzle, as the search engines consider backlinks more important than onpage factors. However, if you want to have a good web page ranking, you need to pay attention to the on page factors first as it will make a big difference in how long it takes for your page to show up on the search engines and for which keywords you rank for.
5 Steps To On Page Search Engine Optimization Success
Before I can start with the first step, it must be mentioned that you MUST research your keywords BEFORE you even think of starting a website. Once you have your keyword in mind, then you can start with the five steps below.
Step 1 - Register a Domain
The first step in setting up any website is registering a domain, so this is pretty obvious. But, if you want to have a much easier time getting the web page ranking that you want, make sure that your keyword is in your domain name. Actually, your keyword should be the the first part of your domain, followed by one other word. In my experience, action words work best as the additional word in the domain, but you can use any word such as site, store, or online. For example, if your keyword was dog training, your domain should be something like www-dot-dogtrainingsite-dot-com. This seems like a trivial thing, but as you do your keyword research, notice how many times the high ranking sites for a keyword have the keyword within the domain. Trust me, this will make your life much easier.
Step 2 - Write a 500 Word Article
If you have been doing any article marketing, you will know that articles should be keyword rich. This means that the keyword density should be 1%-4%. Just make sure that it reads naturally because this article is going to be the main post on your web page. In my experience, 500-550 words seems to have the best results. If you are using WordPress, simply add this article as a post.
Step 3 - Latent Semantic Index (LSI) Keywords
LSI keywords, or synonyms as the rest of the world knows them, are an important part of your web page ranking. It is not natural for a keyword to show up many times within an article if none of its synonyms are there as well. So, as a part of your keyword research, make sure to note the words that Google sees as related keywords. The Google wonder wheel is a great tool to use for this. As you are writing your article, make sure to add several LSI keywords within the article to make sure that it reads naturally and that the search engines will like what they see.
Step 4 - Use Your Keyword In Your Headline
If you are familiar with html, you know what an
tag is (for those not familiar with html, h1 stands for headline 1 and the search engines look at words within these tags as being the most important on the page). If you want to get a good web page ranking in the search engines, make sure that you have your keyword within the h1 tags. If you are not familiar with html, WordPress makes this easy for you. Just make sure that you have your keyword in the title of your post. The title is put in tags by default so you won't have to learn any html. One more note about the headlines. Make sure that you make int interesting! Simply putting the keyword in the article will get the search engines to pay attention, but that won't do any good if visitors are bored. They will simply leave your site and all of your SEO efforts and your great web page ranking will be for naught. I find that telling people the benefits or solving their problems work best. Something like "Your Keyword Here Will Save You A Small Fortune." Simple and eye catching, it gets your visitor to read on.
Step 5 - Use Your Keyword In Your Title Tag
For best results, you want to match your title tag to your domain name. So if your domain name is dogtrainingreview.com, your title should start with Dog Training Review. The search engines seem to like that the best in my experience. You can enter up to three keywords in the title tag, just make sure to put a "|" in between each (the vertical bar is called a pipe). So your title should be something like this - Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Keyword 3.
I personally like to use 2 keywords in my titles, but that is just my preference. Three is fine, but any more than that and it seems to show up as unnatural to the search engines, which is what you do not want. WordPress makes changing the title tag very easy. In your admin panel, click on settings on the left sidebar. In the general settings there is a place to put in your site title. Type your keyword rich title here, hit the save changes button, and it will change the title of your web page.
You can check to see that it worked by visiting your home page (refresh if you are already there) and looking at the bar at the very top of your browser. This is where your title will show up. One final note about the title tag and WordPress. Some plugins such as the all-in-one SEO pack will override the title that you enter on the general settings page. If you have an SEO plugin installed, you will probably change your title on the settings page for the plugin.
Now, will doing all of this ensure that you have a great web page ranking? Well... no. But it is the first step, and a very important step because it greatly decreases the amount of work that you have to do from here. And I don't know about you, but I am definitely a fan of better results for less work.

10 Off Page SEO Factors For High Google Rankings
Everyone has the same goal with their website or blog, and that's to gain better Google rankings. The problem is, not everyone knows how to go about getting this done, and even the people who think they know, often don't. There is a great deal of conflicting information out there and blackhat strategies that could end up creating more issues for your site than anything else.
What the majority of people are familiar with already to some extent or another is on page SEO. Specifically, most people are familiar with the concept of using keywords in order to help boost their Google rankings. However, the other side of the coin is all about the SEO work that you do OFF site. This is collectively referred to as off page SEO, and in today's world of online marketing it's safe to say it's even more powerful than any on page SEO methods.
Below are 10 of the most important factors when it comes to off-page SEO and increasing your Google rankings. By following this advice and incorporating these strategies into your own SEO strategy, you will be giving yourself the best opportunity to soar up the search engine rankings.
Tumblr media
1. Backlinks - The long story short is that the more backlinks (one way links to your site) tha you have leading to your website the better your website will be able to rank. This is one of the most important elements of improving your Google rankings with off page SEO.
2. Backlink Quality - While the more backlinks you have for your website the better, the quality of these backlinks plays a vital role. Not all links are created equally, and ones that have more inherent value will provide a larger boost to your Google rankings. High quality one way back links in particular, especially from related sites, or better yet, high page rank sites, are key to your search engine rankings. The more the better.
3. Backlink Diversity - In addition to the quantity and quality of backlinks you have leading to your website, the diversity of backlinks you have also plays a role. It will help your rankings much more to have links coming in from numerous sources including blogs, directories, forums, articles, related websites and more than to just have links coming in from one individual class or network.
4. Backlink Anchor Text - Having a backlink is great, but having a backlink that includes highly targeted anchor text is even better. The anchor text used in a link leading to one of your web pages will help associate that page with the included term. This mans that it's a great way to improve your Google rankings for your targeted keywords and key phrases.
5. Website History and Age: The longer your website has been around and the older your domain is, the more credible and reputable you will be viewed. You can't do much about this problem if your site is new, but you can consider purchasing older, existing domains as long as they are in good standing with the major search engines.
6. Social Networking - The growth of social networking has been extremely link, and it's a great way to improve your off-page SEO. You can build a large and diverse amount of backlinks to your site but you will also be able to reach out and connect with more prospects and potential customers and clients. Your participation will help lead to an increased web presence and stronger results across the board.
7. Visitor Behavior: The way that visitors behave when they see your website can actually affect your Google rankings. Bounce rate is a measure of how many one page visits to your website that there are. The lower your bounce rate, the more valued, related and worthwhile your website is viewed as being. Therefore you have to strive to minimize your bounces and provide meaningful, useful content with an intuitive and engaging design.
8. Traffic Sources: The sources of your traffic can also end up affecting your Google rankings. There are "good" and "bad" sources of traffic on the Internet, and if you participate in linking schemes or traffic buying you can actually end up being penalized to some degrees. You want your traffic to come from credible referral sites that are related to your own website, natural searching and any legitimate PPC campaigns you may be running.
9. Traffic History - You need to think about website development as a gradual process. That means that you should be gradually and continually adding more pages and content, while gradually and continually adding more links and so on. A sudden, large boost can signal some sketchy behavior, and can end up costing you some position in the Google rankings. Therefore take your time and build slowly, naturally and continually.
10. Web Directory Inclusion: There was a time when web directories were some of the most powerful tools for high Google rankings that your website could use. That time has passed, however the most valued directories can still provide a great deal of help. Focus on being included into a few of the select best web directories instead of trying for mass-inclusion with thousands of directories with no value whatsoever.
If you follow all of the above, or even a fraction, and you implement them, you will be on your way to improved Google rankings through the use of off-page SEO. While these off the page tactics were once questioned, today they are viewed as equals to on-page SEO. In fact, many experts and specialists now agree that SEO has evolved to the point where off-page SEO is even more important for Google rankings than on-page strategies, and I think it will continue to trend that way.
I recommend that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the best practices of off-page SEO. Build up a diverse collection of high quality links, provide content that people find relevant, gradually build your website and do everything you can off of your website to help increase your Google and search engine rankings.

On Page SEO - 10 Critical Factors You Can Apply Immediately
How can you get your site to rank for a number of specific keywords in the search engine? There are generally 2 parts in SEO, on page SEO and off page optimization. On page SEO focuses on the content on your site, including the relevancy of your content, the format and structure of your content. Off Page optimization simply about the numbers and quality of backlinks with specific anchor text to your site. Each backlink represents a vote to your site. Here I just focus on on page SEO since this is the first thing you need to do before you start your off page optimization as it will greatly help you to gain an advantage in the SEO battle field.
Tumblr media
On Page SEO
There are hundreds if not thousands of algorithm that Google uses to determine the ranking of your site. Also, Google almost improves and updates its algorithm everyday. This makes it almost impossible to crack the Google algorithm black box. However, there are some critical factors for the on page optimization based on the industry practice and my personal experience, that will help your site to get ranked on the top of search engine result pages.
1. Domain Name
This is considered as a very important on page factor. Your site will be ranked easily if you have your keyword in your domain name. Ideally, you would want an exact match keyword in your domain. For example, if the keyword you would like to rank for is "dog training", you would want your domain to be DogTraining.com. What happen if the domain name is not available? You can try to register.net or.org. If the domain is still not available, consider adding a suffix to it, such as DogTrainingTips.com. Can you add a prefix in front (such as MyDogTraining.com)? Based on my experience, it is better to add suffix (i.e. have your keyword appear first) to have the on page optimization leverage.
2. Keyword in URL
Let's say you have an article or a post about dog training product review. You would want the keyword appear in the URL, such as:
DogTrainingTips.com/Dog-Training-Product-Review
You might notice that some of the page just display an ugly URL such as DogTrainingTips.com/p=561?. Comparing these 2 URL, which one do you think Google will like? Of course the first one as it is more meaningful to have the keyword in the URL than a random number. Remember that Google rank the website based on the relevancy of your content. So, you would want your content to be easily identified by Google.
If you are using WordPress as your blogging platform, you can easily put our keyword in your URL by changing the permalink structure. Just go to your WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks. Under Common Settings, check "Custom Structure" and put in /%postname%/.
This will make your post name as your URL instead of the?123 ugly link. So, make sure that you put in your keyword such as"Dog-Training-Product-Review" (in this example) as your blog post title.
3. Keyword in the Title, Description and Keyword Meta Tag
The keyword should be placed in the title, description and keyword meta tag.
You should have your keyword placed in those 3 meta tags field and have a compelling title & description in order to attract more click through from the search results. Do not simply stuff lots of keyword into those meta tag field just simply for the SEO purpose as this is considered as keywords spam.
You can use a free WordPress plugin - "All-In-One-SEO Pack" to help you easily set this up without touching the html code. Once you activate the plugin, you can add in the meta title, description and keywords under Posts > Add New
Ideally, the keyword should be placed at the beginning of the Title. If your keyword is "dog training tips", put in "Dog Training Tips - 8 Ways To Train Your Dog" in your title rather than "8 Dog Training Tips To Help You To Train Your Dog".
4. Keyword in HEADING Tags
In HTML, heading tags are used to organize the site's content and structure. There are h1, h2...all the way to h6.
Heading is a great way to be used to organize your content so that it is easy to navigate by the readers. Spend some time to use different headings in your content with your keyword at the beginning of your Heading.
5. Keyword Density
Ideally, you should have a keyword density of 2% to 5%. For example if your blog post is 500 words in total, there should be around 10 to 25 keywords in your blog post. Again, do not simply add keywords into your post so that you achieve the keyword density. Eventually, your post must be read by human, not just for search engine bots.
6. Keyword in the First and Last Sentence
The keyword position does play a role so try to put your keyword in the first and last sentence of your blog post or article.
7. Bold, Italicize and Underline your Keyword
Basically, the rationale behind is to let Google know that the bold, italicized and underlined keyword is the one that you pay attention in your blog post. Hence Google should also target these keyword.
8. Image Should Contain Keyword
How does Google recognize the images you put on your site? They can't read image so they will rely on the description of the image.
The first description is the file name of the image and the 2nd description is the ALT tag. Based on the description, Google will then know the image is related to the keyword you specified.
9. Internal Linking of Your Blog Post
Apart from external backlinks, internal linking does play an important role in on page SEO. This can be achieved by
At the bottom of each blog post, include links to related articles within the particular keyword theme.
Linking some keywords within the blog post body to your other relevant blog posts.
There is a free WordPress plugin that can assist to put in relevant post at the end of each blog post. You can just download "Yet Another Related Posts Plugin" and start playing around with it.
10. Add NoFollow Tags to Unimportant Links
We have complete control over our website's outbound link. So, do not point a link to a link farm or junk site as this will definitely affect the page ranking badly. Also, Any link point to "About Us" & "Contact Us" page should be no follow as well. This will help to conserve internal link juice. All you do is to add a NoFollow Tag.
Above mentioned are 10 critical factors to effective on page SEO and you can easily apply to your site immediately. However, do bear in mind that the purpose of your content on your site ultimately is read by human. So make sure it is naturally readable while pleasing the search engine.
Now you are familiar with these 10 critical factors for on page SEO, you can go and implement to your website and I am sure you will see ranking improvement to your site.
If you're sick and tired of getting the same old boring advice to help you rank in Google, but yet you have no idea what to do, where to start, etc...then you found the right person. I'll show you how to dominate Google with my powerful SEO strategies. This will be an enjoyable and fun process, gear towards massive action taking.

Well, go to Google Search then type your keyword and the resources. After that, you can click on each result to help you identify the broken link at the resource page. If this happens to be relevant to the niche you have, then create some content around it on your blog or site and then ask the owners of the broken website to replace their content with your new link which leads to your content.
An excellent place to achieve this is by trying link building at the Wikipedia platform. Browse the page that is related to your gap and then presses the enter button. After that, press “CTRL and F” and then type the word “Dead Link” followed by the Enter button. This will direct you to all the dead links if there are any.
Come up with similar content for your website or the blog and then you can start a process of editing the Wikipedia page to ensure your link is replaced. Isn’t this amazing opportunity to get a back link right from the authority site?

Some websites concentrate on sharing images. Such sites include Instagram and Pinterest to improve the visibility of your search engine as well as traffic to your site. The contents here are only restricted to web search, but of late, you can also search an image by copying it and pasting at the search window.
16.Crate an autopilot content:
Finally, it is said that content is no doubt the king. It is good for you to come up with a great content that can generate backlinks as well as social shares on the autopilot. There are some content formats that you can use, and thousands of visitors will find their way into your website. They include:

For this reason, entrepreneurs and managers constantly keep coming up with promising and productive strategies that can help fuel up business growth, development, prosperity and well-being and make your organization No.1 in the market. Among the multiple business development strategies employed by large and small businesses these days, SEO marketing stands out as the most promising one that can surely yield great results for your business in future.
Tumblr media
SEO, in its long form, refers to Search Engine Optimization or simply web marketing. Marketing, unlike traditional times where it was limited to door to door sales or distributing pamphlets and leaflets, now has gone global and has a vast scope to it. The advancement of technology has now given a new dimension to marketing where businesses, organizations and companies tend to market and promote their brands, products and services online on leading websites over the internet. Preferably, search engines with high usage by people all over the world such as Google and Bing are used widely for business marketing advertising and promotion and also for SEO. Apart from these, a large number of other relevant websites and even social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc are also used for marketing online on a large scale.
Search Engine Optimization has now become one of the most important and relevant strategies for businesses in the modern world to implement for gradual growth and development. One of the major reasons for its rising scope and popularity among businesses is that SEO is highly cost effective unlike many other strategies of marketing and promotion. SEO includes a large amount of activities that collectively work to improve the page rank of your website and also help your website, blogs or landing pages appear on the top position on Google. For this reason, a set of keywords that are relevant for a business are predefined and researched upon and are targeted effectively to help your website rank for them. SEO simply means that when customers or clients enter the specific keywords on Google to search for companies offering their desired products or services online, your website can rank of the top which means you get a large number of clicks and visits to your web pages.
Another major importance of engaging into the strategy of SEO or web marketing is that the scope of the internet and online business has increased widely over the last few years and is here to stay for long. The online medium not only offers your ultimate convenience and ease at shopping or marketing but also facilitates growth and development at the international and global levels. Moreover, you also get instant feedback from your customers and clients.S4G2 Marketing Agency Will be Best Choice If You Looking For SEO Services in India Cities Mentioned Below:

7 Basic SEO Mistakes That Will Get You Google SLAPPED (and How You Can Avoid Them)
Since Google updated their search algorithm, some of the most successful businesses have found their websites slapped from the from the front page of Google down as far as page 7 or 8. This has affected all kinds of business, from fashion retailers to manufacturers. If you use Google regularly then you will know that if your page is relegated below page 3 then it might as well not exist, which is why it is essential that you make sure that your site is not making one of the cardinal sins of SEO.
Make sure you avoid these easy to make mistakes, and it will go a long way to helping you avoid the notorious Google Slap.
Over Optimisation
The most recent Google update has meant that over optimised sites have been given rank penalties. When the Google spiders (software that crawls the web analysing your website) find a page that seems too directed towards certain keywords then they will penalise you for it.
Tumblr media
The best way to avoid the optimisation penalty is simply to write your website content naturally, and not drop your keywords into every sentence. Using synonyms has also proven effective in beating the penalty, so redrafting your content to make sure that your keyword density is not above about 3% (you can check this in WordPress with most SEO plugins or search Google for keyword density checker) and having a few sentences that are more reader friendly than spider friendly will now give you the edge over competitors who have spent thousands optimising every last bit of content for search engines.
Link Sharing
Prior to the latest update, link sharing (posting links to someone else's website and having them do the same for you) to boost the number of links coming in to your site (a key signal that Google uses to identify popular sites) got you little more than a slap on the wrist from the web giant. Now Google is actively penalizing heavy use of link sharing schemes in an attempt to stamp out the unfair advantages that companies get from so called 'link farms' (sites that exist purely to provide links to other sites).
Avoiding the link sharing penalty is easy, simply don't do it. If you do decide to share links with sites, do it sparingly and only with high quality sites (sites with a high page rank). Instead, concentrate on gaining one way links to your site (where you get a link in without giving a link back). You can do this by posting articles to directories with links back to your site, and posting in RELEVANT, highly ranked forums and blogs. Google will not award you anything if you are an industrial metalwork manufacturer that posts comments in 300 blogs on dog walking, but you will get credit if you post on forums regarding construction.
Low quality Site Links
Similar to link sharing schemes, having inbound links from 30,000 sites will now get you penalised, especially if those sites are low quality 'junk' sites, such as link farms and autoblogs. Instead 30-300 links from sites with a high page rank will help you much more reliably rocket to the top of Google searches.
Avoid using automatic linking software, especially if you have not built a solid foundation of high quality links from authority sites. Once you have established with Google that you have links coming to you from sites with a high page rank then you can go to the lower quality sites and build your huge inbound link network, but make sure that you always get quality links first.
Poor Linking
Some businesses have reported that having too many optimised links into their web pages have caused them to drop in rankings. If you run a car dealership and every one of your inbound hyperlinks is attached to the words 'buy your next car here' the Google will treat this as suspicious and drop you in the rankings. Businesses have found success using synonym links ('discounts on Ford's at this dealer') and even junk links 'click here' as texts improves their rankings in Google.
Use this technique with caution as creating too many junk links will lower your relevancy in Google's eyes, but if you just cannot seem to get to page one, then you may want to consider building a few of these links on relevant sites.
No new content
Stale sites have always been penalised by Google, however many businesses create a great website but do not update the content at all from day 1. Websites that do not regularly update their content not only puts people off coming back, it is also penalised by Google for not maintaining the site or providing up to date material.
Keeping your website up to date is easier than it seems. Having a blog on your site that you regularly post to will help show Google that you are taking good care of your site, and optimising your pages to get the best response from your prospects should mean that you are updating your pages regularly anyway. For blog posts, a quick, high quality 300 word article every couple of weeks will usually be the minimum that is required. You can do this yourself or hire someone to write articles for you, usually for less than $40 per article.
No Social Signals
The latest Google update has placed huge emphasis on social signals to demonstrate a website's popularity and relevance. If no one is talking about your website, then Google takes that information as a guide to say that your site is not as valuable as a site that does have coverage on social networks.
To get more links from social media sites make sure that you have the ability to share, tweet and bookmark your blog posts and pages as this will create a valuable social network backlink to your page, and also will expose your site to the network of contacts that your visitors have, potentially bringing you more clients. Having a social media profile and/or business page is becoming less of an optional extra and more of a necessity for any business, and will allow you to actively generate social media traffic and links to your site.
No Activity
The biggest change that Google has made to assess the value of your web pages is the level of visitor activity on each page. This includes the number of unique visitors to your page, the number of comments, likes and shares of your content and the length of time visitors spend on each of your pages.
To improve activity on your site, you should give your visitors as many ways to engage with you as possible, allow comments on your blog (but monitor for spam comments), and encourage your visitors to share your content. Longer, high quality blog posts and videos are also a very good way to increase the length of time people spend on your website. The impact of having online contact forms is less clear, but they certainly do not harm your Google ranking, so if your business offers a quote service, then adding a contact form for visitors to fill in may also improve your page activity in Google's eyes.
Using the trade secrets above will help you beat the Google update system by giving them exactly what they want, and allowing them to place you higher in rankings for your chosen keywords giving you more exposure, more prospects, and more clients, allowing your business to get the most from your website day after day.

Outsourcing SEO Services
When a company undertakes a search engine optimization program, whether it is performed in-house or outsourced to an SEO service, most of the attention (and rightly so) is focused on the company website. This is the one aspect where there is a feeling of control--once a website is released into the wild, the company will have to see how its site fares against all the other websites out there, whether the other sites are using ethical SEO tactics or not.
Tumblr media
Apart from changes made to the company website, the assumption is often that the company and, if it is using one, its SEO service, has zero control over what appears in search engine results. However, this is not usually the case. Often, you or your SEO service can have a direct effect on search engine results by monitoring your competitors and reporting them to the major search engines when the SEO techniques used on their site fall outside what is popularly referred to as ethical SEO. (Please note that while I believe that the word "ethical" is tossed around too often, "ethical SEO" has become the standard phrase to describe white hat techniques, and so it is the phrase I use throughout the article.)
Primary Competitors
To start with, let's define competitors. Almost every company has at least a handful of other companies that it considers to be primary competitors--the ones that sell the same products and services, that are of similar size, and so on. It is important that the SEO efforts (or lack thereof) of these competitors, whether they are using ethical SEO techniques or not, be monitored on a routine basis. If they have not hired an SEO service of their own, or if they have not started doing SEO in-house at all, you will have peace of mind knowing that the use of this channel, for the moment, is yours. If your competitors begin an SEO campaign, with or without an outside SEO service, you can learn much about their sales and marketing tactics by evaluating the keyphrases that they target. And you can also investigate whether they are using ethical SEO practices in their campaign.
Your Online Competitors
It's important to keep in mind that it is unlikely that searchers are going to decide only between you and the primary competitors you have listed. They are going to consider any company that matches their particular needs and that shows up for their search term. This is why your criteria for a competitor online should broaden to encompass any company that offers products or services like yours that outranks you for any of your targeted keyphrases. If your in-house staff or your SEO service not only continually monitors your search engine positions but also analyzes the companies that appear above you in search results, you can often identify forward-looking competitors of which you were previously unaware--your primary competitors of tomorrow.
Violations
This brings us to the key issue of ethical SEO. Search engine optimization is still a very new concept to most companies. Even the most respected companies can make mistakes in this arena, either by choosing the wrong SEO service, or by trying to avoid hiring an SEO service altogether by bringing it in house with well-intentioned but unqualified people. For example, BMW's German site was recently removed temporarily from the Google index for using doorway pages--something that is not considered an ethical SEO practice. It stands to reason that your competitors are also not immune to violations.
Bad Firms
There are very notable examples of otherwise smart and established companies hiring an SEO service that put them in a worse situation than before they pursued SEO--by getting their site removed from major search engines for violating the engine's terms of service, for example. Not long ago, there was a well-publicized example where most of the clients of a Las Vegas SEO service were penalized. Almost all of the clients claimed that they were not informed that the firm was not practicing ethical SEO and that they were therefore at risk.
SEO firms are generally divided into two camps--those called "White Hats" (those that use ethical SEO practices and will never knowingly violate a search engine's terms of service) and those called "Black Hats" (those that do not use ethical SEO practices and that will attempt to unravel the latest algorithms and exploit any loopholes to achieve rankings at any cost). Neither approach is invalid--it is not against the law to violate the terms of service of a search engine. Moreover, black hat techniques can be quite effective. However, the tactics are risky, and anyone hiring an SEO service that wears a black hat and does not use ethical SEO practices should definitely be apprised of this risk up front.
Internal Resources
Firms are often tempted to avoid hiring an SEO service by performing SEO in-house, and the project almost always falls onto an already overburdened IT department. The problem with approaching SEO from a strictly technical mindset is that the strategies employed, such as the keyphrases targeted, will not necessarily be in line with the goals of the marketing and sales departments. In addition, an IT resource will usually approach SEO from a purely technical standpoint, without being aware of ethical SEO practices, and this can lead to trouble. Penalization is a very real possibility, and it is hard to get back onto an index once your site has been removed.
Monitoring
A thorough SEO service will monitor not only the handful of competitors that you deem crucial but also the sites that appear higher than you for any of your chosen search phrases. This may be somewhat controversial, especially to any SEO service or webmaster that uses tactics forbidden by the search engines' terms of service. However, many white hat SEO service firms consider it an obligation to their clients to routinely monitor the sites of any competitor found on the engines to be sure it is using ethical SEO techniques.
There is a reason that every major search engine has a form to report sites who do not use ethical SEO tactics and who violate the terms of service so that these sites can be subsequently penalized or removed. Spam filters cannot catch all violations without also removing a large number of good sites. Search engines rely on their users to help them to keep their indexes clean and free of sites not using ethical SEO tactics. There are many techniques to spam an engine--far too many to list. However, a good SEO service not only knows what all of these techniques are but knows how to identify them when it sees them so they can be reported to the engine accurately.
The End Result
Business is business, and your interests often run directly counter to that of your competitors. When you report a website that is not using ethical SEO, it is very likely that it will be removed. This means there is one less company that you need to worry about in the online arena, at least for the time being. If the site in question outranked yours, you also get the added benefit of seeing your rankings improve as the violating pages are removed--provided, of course, that you are using ethical SEO techniques and steering clear of violations yourself, or you may be reported by a competitor of yours or its SEO service!
The engine also benefits from users reporting violations. Engines do not like people trying to trick their indexes, since there might then be pages showing up for particular search terms that are not actually relevant to those terms. Clearly, search engines understand this benefit--if the engines thought they could weed out all the spam themselves, they would not provide a reporting system. Supporting such a system, after all, is not free. Real people employed by the engine have to visit the offending pages to confirm that they are not using ethical SEO tactics.
In the notable example cited earlier of the firm that got most of its clients penalized, the owner of the SEO service in question was quoted as saying, "Google can kiss my ass. This is the Wild Wild West." He may be right--maybe it is the Wild Wild West. But there are a whole bunch of new sheriffs in town--and they are wearing white hats.
