Their Promise
Book I || Book II || Book V
It’s good to know that, whether Seto and Kisara are 15 and 16 in the USA, 17 and 19 in Japan, or a thing of aged fantasy in Ancient Egypt, they never really change.
And by that I mean it’s good to know that, whether I’m drawing in 2017 for SetoKisa Week or in 2012 as a rogue agent, I still keep to some level of consistency.

November 8th. Day 9. “Sexting.”
Fun fact: Duelist Kingdom and Battle City take place during 1996 & 1997 respectively. Sexting wasn’t really a thing yet.
Their Promise. Meta.
Enjoy my nsfw cop out. And with that, I have completed the nine day 2016 SetoKisa Week prompts, exactly one year later, on the same days, in 2017. As coy as this drawing is, it’s also very true. I’ve constructed two meta lists because of Their Promise:
The first is a list outlining the ages of Pegasus, Kaiba and Kisara throughout their early years.
The second and more topical list delineates when exactly the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series took place in our timeline.
And believe me, it is my absolute pleasure to be able to make Kisara a fan of the new box office smash, Dragonheart, starring Sean Connery, coming to theaters near you this summer 1996.

November 3st. Day 4. “ Medieval Times.”
The glow faded. Christian – Seto – made to leave Stonehenge. She was not here now. There was nothing left for him now.
As he rounded the corner, Jack Cade’s – Bakura’s – silhouette loomed before him, arms crossed. “Pegasus lifted Heishin’s fallen crown and crowned Yugi himself. Your absence was noted fairly quickly. Yugi was quick to ask, ‘Now all that is left of the enemy is that despicable Seto! Lord Crawford, do you know where he might be?‘” Pegasus suggested… here.” Bakura surveyed their surroundings and the ancient druid stones set about them.
His gaze settled on one stone in particular. Bakura’s eyes seemed to spark with recognition. “I wonder… what drew you here… with the army so close behind you, baying for your blood. What was your oath and promise.”
Their Promise. Sneak Peek into the “Duelist of the Roses Arc.”
I am so excited, both for the Duelist of the Roses Arc and for Bakura’s involvement with Kisara’s story. I’m going to start playing with it in Book II and the Forbidden Memories/ Battle City storylines.

November 4th. Day 5. “Photos and Memories.”
“When he looked at her, Kisara knew for certain. His scowl was just as hollow as her smile. Inside, they were both screaming in pain.” The untold story of Kisara, from Atlantis, to Ancient Egypt, to Medieval England, to its final conclusion in Modern Japan. And beyond.
Their Promise. Overview.
From left to right (background):
Critias’s sword and the altar from the Mausoleum of White, Kisara’s ancestral birthright.
The stone tablet that records the bond between High Priest Seto and the Lady of the White Dragon in 1201 BC, during the New Kingdom era of Ancient Egypt.
A tapestry (based on the Unicorn Tapestry Collection of Cluny, Paris and The Cloisters, NYC,) showcasing the quest of C. Seto Rosenkreuz of York to find the mythical dragon and his lady love.
From left to right (foreground):
In Seto Kaiba’s left hand: a copy of the Domino Times, with a photograph of his encounter with Kisara Pegasus, daughter of Maximillion Pegasus, CEO of Industrial Illusions.
In Seto Kaiba’s right hand: the Duel Monster’s cards Kaibaman and Maiden with Eyes of Blue.

November 5th. Day 6. “Forgiveness.”
Pegasus smiled. “Oh, you foolish, naïve boy. Did you really think I was the one hurting her?” He chuckled. “Did I rip the card in half, laboring under some twisted notion that I was punishing it for betraying me by acting in the hand of another duelist?  Did I then infect the Blue-Eyes from some secret base in my mansion, hiding like a coward?” Pegasus leered. Kaiba swallowed. “Did I allow a mammoth to force through her torn side, which had already been ripped in half so viciously that she could hardly stand without a cane!?” Kaiba looked at Kisara with fresh eyes. He stared at her shaking form. Dread at what Pegasus was telling him muddled all other thoughts. His mind begged him to reject what he was hearing as nonsense – there was no way the girl was connected to the card – but his eyes confirmed the truth. The creator of Duel Monsters rattled on. “You must have hated her very much for not taking care of you, for not keeping her promise to you, as you imagined you were owed. What a way to have your bitter revenge.”
“I didn’t know,” Kaiba croaked. He gripped at the arena, eyes riveted to her. “I swear I did not know.” My god. What have I done?
Their Promise. Chapter 11. “The Abyss.”
@thewittyphantom and I recently talked about how, especially in the early manga and anime, Seto Kaiba treats the Blue-Eyes White Dragon horribly and callously. I saw this as an opportunity to explore Kaiba’s predisposition to take loyalty and love for granted, whether it be in regard to Mokuba in the actual Yu-Gi-Oh! plot, or in this case… in regard to Kisara in Their Promise.
character development is your friend, seto.

November 6th. Day 7. “Person A tries to intimidate person B but fails miserably.”
The last time he had seen her had been in the dungeons of Duelist Kingdom. They stood before eachother silently, in the arena of Battle City. She was smiling, the wind from the blimp toying with her silver hair. Her eyes were sparkling with unsaid laughter.
Without intention, Seto chanced a glance down to her exposed collarbone and to the whisper of a blemish that, one year ago, he had showered with unsaid kisses.
He bristled, and straightened out to his full and imposing height of six feet. Her pale mouth widened in her smile.
Their Promise. Sneak Peek into the “Battle City Arc.”
One year after the events of Chapter 12. “Promises Mouthed,” as drawn by @zelka94.

November 7th. Day 8. “AU where Kisara lives.”
“WAIT!” The exile’s wail pierced through the muddle in Seto’s mind, even as he walked away. “It’s really the divine punishment! The White Dragon’s divine punishment!”
The guards’ threats blurred behind Seto. “How dare you!” “Open your mouth again and we’ll cut off your tongue!” “Throw him in the desert!” Seto continued forward without turning back.
Years later, when Seto sat on the throne in his old age, the kingdom at peace, and his sons and daughters grown, he had to wonder if there had not been some truth in the curse that exile had laid on him all those years ago. If that White Dragon had not indeed been brought into his life as a punishment. A light brighter even than the Pharaoh – than Ra. The light he would never be able to touch, but which had touched him so entirely that he would feel her scorch on his lips for the rest of his life – no, for the rest of Time.
Divine Punishment.
Their Promise. Chapter 4. “Remembered Too Late.”
I suppose this drawing could also have worked for the Day 1 prompt, “Ghost.” Yes, I am all too aware that I used this exact quote for a SetoKisa Week prompt from a previous year. However, “The Land of What Might Have Been,” is a pretty similar notion to “AU where Kisara lives,” and one with which I never get tired of toying. Pharaoh Seto in his old age is a concept that I will absolutely explore further, but alas that is something that is only going to really happen in Book V of my story, and I’m just getting started on Book II.
I really like how this drawing came out, mainly because I unintentionally paralleled their faces from when they were younger, yet in a later life, in yesterday’s Day 7 prompt.

November 1st. Day 3. “After the War.”
And so they set about rebuilding the joint kingdom of Upper and Lower Egypt, greatest Empire the world had ever known. United, they pulled it from its greatest fall. In years to come Seto, who took on the name Seti II, thought on the pride with which Ramesses the Great and Seti I would have looked down on his works. He thought on his predecessor… nameless… forever barred from the joyous world of the Fields of Reeds. He too would have been proud, were he not sealed to eternal darkness.
The Pharaoh and his queen both mourned their dead. Sometimes, when peace was finally achieved, she would vanish for days on end. Seto never asked where she went. He did not need to.
After all, he did the same.
Their Promise. Sneak Peek into the “Millennium World Arc.”
Pharaoh Seto in his old age is something I plan on exploring in depth.
This is now two days of different outfits for Egyptian Seto that do not include his Millennium World look! Day 2 was Forbidden Memories and now Day 3 is his Pharaoh outfit from the manga. I really love his Pharaonic crown.

November 1st. Day 2. “AU where the Priest more successfully / ruthlessly exploits Kisara’s Ka.”
Kisara walked towards him. Seto started cackling hysterically, “What is it, girl? Do you have a death wish?” Kisara smiled at him, not slowing down, not looking away.
A death wish? Oh, you have no idea. …But not like this. Her smile set him off. With a twitch that resembled a flinch, Seto drew the blade from his Millennium Rod and slammed her against a hieroglyph-covered wall, knife to throat. Bakura snarled. He would never, ever forgive Seto for this.
Kisara did not look away. She stared Seto in the eye. “You’re not going to do it,” she whispered. “I do not know you, Priest Seto. But I know that face. That face once swore its sword to me. I would trust that face until my final hour. This is not my final hour. I know it. You know it.” She presses forward, against the blade, and took a step towards Seto.
“You are not Heishin’s puppet. You promised me. And I promised you. So stop fooling around and wake up!”
Their Promise. Sneak Peek into the “Forbidden Memories Arc.”
I know that @zelka94 has played with Kisara and ForbiddenMemories!Seto. Well, now you know what to look forward to in Book II of Their Promise. It’ll be this in the past and Battle City in the present! and yes, those are some heavy references to Critias in that excerpt.

October 31st. Day 1. “Ghost [person A] in love with living person [person B] and interferes with their life.”
He brushed off one of his manservants. “Don’t fuss,” he snapped. The servant backed away, leaving Seto – Christian – alone in front of the mirror. He was to be knighted in a matter of hours. The silver-plated armored face of the dragon, its head resting on his shoulder, suited him well. The blue diamond set in as the eye of the beast sparkled in the candlelight of the castle. He had expected the armor to hang heavy upon him. Rather, it felt as though it were already becoming a part of his skin. He felt protected, as he had never felt before in his eighteen years of life. This dragon was his protection.
He smiled to himself. If what his patron had told him had even a whisper of truth to it, he would find the dragon one day. She was his quest. The only lady he would ever acknowledge. His oath. His promise.
Their Promise. Chapter 14. “A Rose by Any Other Name.”
I missed @setokisaweek last year. However, as the event is not to be hosted this year, I’ve decided to make up for my sins by using for 2016 Prompts for 2017 instead. Right day. Off by a year. Happy Halloween, everyone!
