Contributed by Donald Johnson Montenegro:
My wife Anna and I built this cabin ourselves in Southern Vermont, over the course of the summer, and with the help of Anna’s dad. She grew up on this land, in the Green Mountains, off the grid, and surrounded by books. We live in New York City, but this is where we always want to be. I grew up in Quito, Ecuador, high up in the Andes, so we’re both most at home in the mountains.
We slept in our cabin for the first time the day we finished it. Laying in a hammock on the porch of this building we had made ourselves, on our own small piece of the earth, looking up at blanket of stars and surrounded by the smells and sounds of the forest, I felt immeasurably gratified, grateful, and at peace.
