watched a podcast with roberta today where she talks about her coming out process and the whole figuring out she was a lesbian and it was so intense. I kept thinking about how she’s mentioned that on aloto they all contributed to the creation and backstories of the characters, and kelly has also talked about all her suggestions and the 40 page doc for Jess and how some things are so similar to herself and so on.
So it got me thinking about Lupe’s backstory AGAIN. More specifically if Roberta also drew some connection to herself with the character. The religious latine background is there in full, and it must have been Something to play it. but there’s also the late-bloomeness of it that Roberta talks about in the podcast, how much she tried to overcompensate in some things even though she wasn’t fully conscious of “oh, I’m gay”. And I can see that with Lupe so much, in how she is clearly uncomfortable with the dresses and charm school and the whole femininity performance, while at the same time showing a kind of resignation towards it, like she’d done it before and had learned how to do it in an almost adequate way, a passable way.
Bottom line is I’m still so fucking hung up on Lupe’s baggage and how little we got to see of it while also having a lot of information thrown at us. And Roberta is so fucking elusive and private even in settings where she’s there to talk about those things.

i dont think jess and greta as roomates has been fully explored yet. i could so see greta as being a little tomboy as a child but becoming much more femme presenting when she realises it will protect her. so my hc would be something about jess and greta being roommates and greta letting herself be a little less femme/a little more her bc jess makes her feel so comfortable in herself
This is so cute sorry it got buried in my inbox - yeah they’re buds! @talaricula has really really well done butch/fem solidarity in her fic ‘some of us had to fight (for even being looked at right)’ - I highly recommend it.

wishes for ALOTO season 2: Jess' past is revealed to be absolutely fucking unhinged. Did prison time. Worked for a senator. Had a wife for a while (no explanation on what happened to the wife). Lived under several false identities. Nursed a dying man back to health. Found a cool rock at the side of the road. Then they heard about this baseball thing and figured "yeah sure, beats prison anyway".

theory 1: baseball curses are real bc look what happened to the cubs and the red sox
theory 2: baseball curses are fake bc no one has ever cursed the yankees
theory 3 (synthesis): no one has successfully cursed the yankees bc they employ a cadre of dark wizards

harrow is such a fun book because for any given incident, it might be:
something that's actually happening, visible to everyone (e.g. heralds attacking)
something that harrow is hallucinating (e.g. the sounds of doors slamming)
something that harrow can detect due to her lyctorhood (e.g. the sounds of heartbeats)
one of the souls possessing harrow (e.g. The Body telling Harrow to lie about her age)
a different soul possessing harrow (e.g. Wake stabbing Cytherea's body)
yet another soul that's kind of possessing harrow (e.g. Gideon describing the trident knife)
one of the other 200+ souls inside harrow (e.g. the dead children in the river?? maybe??)
somebody else doing a similar soul-shuffle (e.g. """ortus""" telling harrow to use blood wards instead of bone)
DIY brain surgery affecting what harrow can perceive (e.g. 'Ortus the first')
a bubble universe in the river (e.g. the retelling of Canaan House)
hallucinations in the bubble universe in the river (e.g. the sister's facepaint on the Body)
active gaslighting (e.g. ianthe claiming she can't see Cytherea's body)
the laws of the bubble universe behaving differently to laws on earth (e.g. harrow's necromancy not working on the Sleeper)
the effects of herald presence (e.g. harrow hallucinating bugs crawling on her skin when the heralds begin to attack)
the experience of being in the River (e.g. the water filling the ship)
ancient bitches being intentionally vague for the #drama of it all (e.g. everything mercymorn and augustine say to each other)
whatever the hell the coffee shop AU was

When Greta in the beginning of ep 8 says “this is not about us - i didn’t give up California or Jo”
and it seems like she’s going to say “for you”
but she can’t make herself say it - she cuts off and visibly struggles as she changes it to “I didn’t go through all that to just give up without a fight”

Thinking about how Carson just wanted to take Greta on a date but they had to pretend they were friends having a meal together and when they went out for pizza they probably got separate checks so it wouldn’t look suspicious. And Carson, being the one who asked, would insist on paying so she either had to give Greta money to pay for hers before they went out or paid her back when they got back to the house.
I could see Carson just thinking that it was so simple going out with Charlie that she took going on a date for granted and feeling guilty because she just wants to take her girlfriend out for a nice dinner but she can’t because one slip could risk literally everything.
And now I’m crying.

It’s Uncle Bertie actually he’s trans though I don’t think they’d had the same vocabulary for it in the 40s. They do use he/him and uncle for Bert tho
omg yeah i made that post when he was first introduced and i just finished the rest of the show! i do think it’s super interesting how queer dynamics are explored in the show, and i know in the 30’s/40’s america the lines between gender and sexuality got super blurred (i mean, if you’re going to be seen as “deviant” for any non-cishet behavior, what’s the pressure to specify exactly which boxes you check?) i know a lot of lesbians felt more comfortable wearing men’s clothes (just like today) regardless of their gender identity (which we see max exploring! she loves her suit, but she wears it ‘her way’ and doesn’t feel herself drawn to any particular butch/femme descriptor). in reality there’s a lot of labels we have today (that mean a lot and are very important to people) that probably wouldn’t have mattered much to people back then as much as the ability to be respected for who they were and to live their lives.
i think the show leaves it kind of ambiguous whether bert is a trans man, nonbinary, genderfluid, butch, a he-him lesbian, or any other combination of things (his wife refers to him as a 'stud’ which comes with a lot of specifically queer black history i don’t have the authority to speak on), but i do see that the people closest to him use he/him pronouns and i was planning on making a follow up to that post anyways! uncle bert you live your funky lil life the way you like i love you
