The Mage is not about suffering, Doom is

I’ve seen this stated many times, that ‘the Mage suffers because of their aspect’ with Sollux used as an example. However, this is simply incorrect.

While it’s true that having the ability to understand things in a way no-one else does, and lacking the ability to explain what you know (the first power of the Mage: Understand Aspect) can have a decent amount of feels to it, that pales in comparison to someone whose only power is literally just Destroying things, like the Prince or Bard, or having having your ability to interact with a basic part of yourself disabled Page style. But that doesn’t mean any of these classes are inherently about suffering, that would be silly.

'But,’ You retort, 'Sollux’s Life(lives?) sucked! He clearly understood suffering!’ This is exactly my point. Weren’t you listening? Mages Understand their Aspect. Thus, if Sollux understands suffering, it’s not because that’s inherent to the Mage, it’s because

Doom is Suffering

Doom is the essence of Tragedy, the aspect of Heavy, Serious Tone, and so Suffering lands right in the center of what doom is all about.
