kira is an asshole whos trying to delude himself and the world too
Agree!!
Lmfao this made me laugh anon, thank you. I mean, yeah, you nailed it. I do think Light is an asshole, I do think he was seriously trying to delude himself into thinking he was engaging in some kinda lofty vigilantism, and he was absolutely trying to become some sort of leader of a new world.
You know, I think sometimes Light is painted as a victim who :( was trying to :( justify his guilt :(
Light was definitely a kid who got swept into some serious stuff BUT (and this is quite a BUT) I think that mindset absolutely absolves Light of responsibility over his actions. Light sees the death note, he’s drawn to it, he writes in it, and he keeps writing in it. A lot. For years.
Ryuk tells Light, you don’t wanna use it? Give it away. But he doesnt. Ohba goes to lengths to make sure we know Light has autonomy in his actions.
And why? Well, two things. Light likes power. Light likes telling raye penber and naomi before they’re deaths that his Kira, he relishes in their fear. He enjoys making sure L knows he was Kira, that he was the winner.
Which brings me to my next point: Light’s ego drives a lot of this. Even early on, when he sees people are talking about him on the internet, he’s stoked. When he says he’s gonna be a god of the new world, that he’s the only one who can do this, Light is buying into his own exceptionalism. Light has had a picture perfect life as this smart, good looking, popular kid with a comfortable upbringing and a nice family and it absolutely helps fuel his own beliefs that, yes, I am chosen.
So basically, yes, Light is a multidimensional character who absolutely feels guilt at times and I would say is not “evil”—I think Death Note goes to lengths to prove that evil and good are incomplete concepts. BUT Light is also a serial killer with an inflated ego who makes the choice to kill and that choice is his and his alone. Or, as you much more astutely put it, anon, an asshole.

L and crying
Lnever cries in front of anyone, not even Watari, but he is weirdlygood with other people when they cry. He gets unusually quiet andserious, and he subtly orders Watari to make the room morecomfortable and private for the person in distress. He doesn’t evertouch the crying person or even directly face them, but he talks tothem soothingly and in a kindly way until they feel better and calmdown. L’s not often known for being terribly sympathetic, butWatari’s noted that something about genuine sorrow in others alwaysseems to touch L’s heart.

L and guilt
I am of the opinion that L wasn’t just testing Aizawa’s loyalty and being callous for no reason during that scene where he upsets him enough to make him leave the task force. L saw how fired up Aizawa got previously about avenging Ukita’s death and was afraid that Aizawa would end up losing his own life, too (remember how L was trembling when he tried to convince Aizawa not to rush out there and also get himself killed by Misa). Aizawa was the only team member aside from Soichiro with a family depending on him, and a very young one at that. I suspect L intentionally drove Aizawa away from the task force in order to protect Aizawa’s life, for the sake of his young family. I think L always felt personally responsible when people died under his command, and I think him saying that he likes people like Aizawa was sincere: it was sort of his quiet apology for the whole thing, even though he knew he had to hurt Aizawa and make himself look like a bad guy for the plan to work.

“In the spring of 1940, when the Nazis overran France from the north, much of its Jewish population tried to escape the country towards the south. In order to cross the border, they needed visas to Spain and Portugal, and together with a  flood of other refugees, tens of thousands of Jews besieged the Portuguese consulate in Bordeaux in a desperate attempt to get that life-saving piece of paper. The Portuguese government forbade its consuls in France to issue visas without prior approval from the Foreign Ministry, but the consul in Bordeaux, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, decided to disregard the order, throwing to the wind a thirty-year diplomatic career. As Nazi tanks were closing in on Bordeaux, Sousa Mendes and his team worked around the clock for ten days and nights, barely stopping to sleep, just issuing visas and stamping pieces of paper. Sousa Mendes issued thousands of visas before collapsing from exhaustion.
The Portuguese government—which had little desire to accept any of these refugees—sent agents to escort the disobedient consul back home, and fired him from the foreign office. Yet officials who cared little for the plight of human beings nevertheless had a deep reverence for documents, and the visas Sousa Mendes issued against orders were respected by French, Spanish and Portuguese bureaucrats alike, spiriting up to 30,000 people out of the Nazi death trap. Sousa Mendes, armed with little more than a rubber stamp, was responsible for the largest rescue operation by a single individual during the Holocaust.”

Asoiaf characters ~ SANSA [x]
“And she says nothing of Arya, nothing, not so much as a word. Damn her! What’s wrong with the girl?”
Bran felt all cold inside. “She lost her wolf”, he said, weakly, remembering the day when four of his father’s guardsmen had returned from the south with Lady’s bones.
