What is NEMA 6P Enclosure?

NEMA 6P is the NEMA enclosure standard which defines one type of environmental protection for electrical equipment. NEMA 6P Enclosure is characterized by having a hinged door placed on the front panel, with the NEMA 6P ring type gasket placed between the door and body of the enclosure to provide environmental sealing. NEMA 6Ps are suitable for indoor use, but not outdoor or damp locations. NEMA 6P enclosures are often used in installations that do not require side- or rear-panel access.

The NEMA Type number can be obtained from ANSI/NEMA standard WD 1. Nema Enclosure Ratings (NER) describe how well an enclosure protects against water, dust and other things like electromagnetic interference (EMI). NEMA enclosure's NER rating is NEMA 6P, NEMA 4X, NEMA 3R as well as Nema N2.

G = NEMA G1 is a limited protection from contact with the enclosed equipment only, NEMA G2 provides limited protection against entry of water, oil & dirt as well as air to the enclosure interior where used in ambient temperature above 50°C NEMA standard also has Nema N1 Nema Enclosure Ratings (NER) which is not recommended for use since it does not provide any protection for enclosed equipment. A NEMA 1 enclosure does not provide any environmental sealing.

S = Protection from solid foreign objects greater than 50mm in diameter

U = NEMA Type 12 enclosures are also designed to contain flammable.
