Conclusion
Owning a weighted blanket may soon become a necessity for all. This is because of our modern lifestyle that is fast-moving and stressful. All of us just want to get a goodnight’s rest at the end of the day. And weighted blankets are designed to give you precisely that!
Out of all the five mentioned weighted blankets I tried, I would choose the Burzio Sherpa Fleece weighted blanket as the winner. Weighted blankets are meant to make you feel calm and comfortable in bed. When I tried the Burzio Sherpa fleece for the first time, I couldn’t get out of bed the next morning.
The ultra-soft fleece feels exceptionally soft on the skin, and the even distribution of pressure makes it even more perfect. Also, I don’t have to worry about staining the blanket at all since it is stain-resistant. The blanket is warm enough to keep you happy during cold winter nights.
There are many types available in the market today, and ultimately it boils down to your personal preference. However, the Burzio Sherpa Fleece weighted blanket stood out as one of the best-weighted blankets in Australia in 2020!
Editorial
You had a tough day at work, and you don’t have anyone at home to comfort you or just hug you. Does that ring a bell? If yes, then I am recommending you to get a weighted blanket for yourself! I know what it’s like to feel stressed on an everyday basis. I realised that I started feeling a lot calmer after I began using weighted blankets.
And it is just not me saying it, but some studies do point to the benefits of using weighted blankets. Therefore, let me answer a few questions, a lot of people ask me, and you can decide if you should get one.
What are weighted blankets?
Weighted blankets are quilts that have high-density microbeads made of glass, plastic, or others sandwiched between two layers. The beads are sewn in pockets and evenly spread throughout the blanket.
Weighted blankets are generally smaller than the regular bedding and are meant for individual use. The idea is to cover the body and stimulate the feeling of hugging snugly.
When I first covered myself with my weight blanket, the overall pressure instantly calmed me down. These blankets give out a “deep touch pressure stimulation” that works to soothe your mind and make you feel relaxed.
Do weighted blankets work?
To be honest, there aren’t enough scientific studies to guarantee that these blankets work. However, many anecdotal pieces of evidence show that weighted blankets have helped people feel better.
A study in 2015 proved that weighted blankets were effective in improving sleep quality and alleviating anxiety disorders. It has also shown positive results in relaxing people who have ADHD ( Attention deficit hyperactive disorder), ASD ( Autism Spectrum Disorder), and other similar disorders.
Another study done on 31 people showed that using weighted blankets positively impacted sleep and dealt with insomnia. Few reports point that weighted blankets’ pressure puts your automatic nervous system to “rest” mode, which helps reduce stress.
What are the types of weighted blankets?
Weighted blankets differ according to their size, fabric used, and filler material. The few different types of weighted blankets are:
Based on fabric
Chenille weighted blankets
Chenille is an extraordinarily soft and fluffy material. Weighted blankets made of chenille are considered to be the softest in the world. They are ultra-soft and provide the utmost comfort while sleeping. It is the right choice for relieving stress and anxiety.
Cotton Magic weighted blankets
These are made of 100% cotton and gives excellent stability. The cotton magic fabric makes them breathable and won’t heat up. If you or your kids have sensory disorders, then this is a good pick.
Minky weighted blankets
Minky fabric is soft and silky, and the weighted blankets have shorter fibres than chenille blankets. They are super comfortable and are best for people with colder body temperature.
Fleece Magic weighted blankets
For those who need deep pressure day and night, fleece magic weighted blankets are the best. The fleece fabric is soft to touch and has high durability. It is an excellent pick for everyday use.
Waterproof weighted blankets
These weighted blankets are water-resistant, anti-microbial, and fire-resistant. They are breathable and do not allow heat and water vapour to escape the blanket.
Based on filler material
The different filler materials used in weighted blankets are:
Glass beads
Plastic beads
Sand beads
Polly pellets
Rice
How do I choose the right weighted blanket?
My experience in choosing a weighted blanket for myself was relatively easy. I was looking for one during peak summer in Aussie, so it was apparent for me to choose a weighted cotton blanket. However, it’s not always about the fabric; but there are other parameters to consider. Here are a few things you should look into:
Size
Your weighted blanket should cover you from your chin to the toes. It shouldn’t be so big that it falls off the bed. It is always recommendable to go for a size that is perfect for you- not more or not less.
Weight
An ideal weight is to choose a blanket that weighs 10% of your body weight. However, it depends on personal preference. I chose a blanket that weighed a little above 10% of the bodyweight rule since I preferred a slightly higher pressure.
Filler material
The filler material used will define the thickness and price of the blanket. There are many types available, so you can choose depending on how heavy you want it. Other factors may include the lumpiness of the blanket, noise level, environmental impact, and so on.
Fabric
The fabric will depend on how cold, hot, or soft you want your weighted blanket to be. Some even come with dual fabrics. One side may be made of cotton, while the other may be made of fleece or a warmer material.

Value Editorial:
Buying the best comforter is one of the essential investments that will significantly determine your sleeping experience. As such, you should give extra importance when looking for the best quilts unless you want to have a restless night. There are several things that you should consider before blindly choosing a comforter. Hence, to help you pick the right product, we will highlight some of the essential aspects of quilts in this session.
How to choose the best product
Experts say that we spend a third of our life sleeping on our bed. For that reason, you should choose the best duvet that is suitable for you. The following points are some essential things that you should consider when buying the best quilts in Australia.
Size and Casing:
One of the essential things to consider when buying the best quilt or doona comes with the size and casing. Here size refers to whether you want single, double, queen, or king. Whatever size you choose, it would be best if you opt for a quilt that is one size bigger than your bed. In this way, you and your partner will not compete for the coverage while sleeping.
When it comes to the casing, you will find two main designs: boxed style and channelled style. The former comes with square-box stitches, which means you will have a quilt with evenly distributed fillings. However, duvets with channelled design have stitches from top to bottom. As such, you can redistribute the fillings based on your requirements.
Filling:
The interior filling will have a significant influence on how it controls your body temperature. You should also note that certain fillings can cause allergies; as such, you need to choose carefully. The following are some common fillings that you will find in quilts:
Down and Feathers:
Quilts with down filling are ideal for those who want light and lofty feel when sleeping. This type of filling is a natural insulator and does not let you sweat. Usually, quilts with down filling come with a boxed design to keep the filling equally distributed. On the other hand, feather quilts are much heavier than down quilts. If you are suffering from any allergies, then you should consider a quilt with feather filling. Additionally, you can also find quilts with both down and feathers.
Wool:
Quilts with wool filling are an ideal choice, especially for the winter season. Additionally, they are significantly durable and regulate itself to your body temperature. However, they are not hypoallergenic. So if you have asthma or suffer from any skin sensitivity, you should ensure that the manufacturer has treated the issue.
Bamboo:
It is another kind of quilt filling, which is softer and lightweight than human-made fibres. Another essential aspect of bamboo fibres is that it is naturally resistant to dust mites, bacteria, and mould. Besides, it is hypoallergenic, which means it is a perfect option for allergy sufferers.
Cotton:
Quilts with cotton filling are considerably lightweight and absorbs moisture well. It can keep you cool when sleeping during the summer. It is not durable but also machine-friendly. Moreover, it suits well to people with allergies.
Synthetic:
These are human-made, and they are available in several types, such as microfibre and polyester. One good thing about synthetic quilts is that it is machine washable and dry faster.
Temperature:
One of the essential things to consider when choosing a quilt and doona is the temperature. Your quilt should be able to cool or warm you appropriately when sleeping at night. When deciding on this aspect, you should also think about your region’s climate.
Remember, body temperature can vary significantly from person to person, based on the stage of life, gender, and medical conditions. As such, you should consider all these aspects before blindly choosing a quilt.
Advantages of buying the right duvets, quilts, and doona
As discussed above, quilts come with different kinds of filling. Hence, the benefits will significantly vary from one type of filling to another. The following table presents the advantages of quilts based on its filling types.
Quilt Filling
Advantages
Down and Feathers
Natural fibre, durable, lightweight, and regulates temperature.
Wool
Natural fibre, fire-resistant, water-repellent, soft, and soil-resistant.
Bamboo
Natural fibre, eco-friendly, breathable, regulate temperature.
Cotton
Natural fibre absorbs moisture, durable, machine washable, and hypoallergenic.
Synthetic
Affordable, machine washable, hypoallergenic, soft, lofty, and light.
Essential tips for maintaining your quilt
Quilts are prone to germs and dust after an extended period of usage. As such, you need to clean it from time to time. With proper maintenance, you can enhance the durability of your quilt. The following are some essential tips for cleaning your quilt:
Airing Outdoors:
It is crucial to take your outdoors at least once a year.
You can place a bed sheet or towels on the dry ground.
Lay your quilt on the top.
You can cover your quilt with another piece of cloth to avoid debris falling on your quilt.
Use a Vacuum Cleaner:
It is another essential tip for keeping your quilt clean. Using a vacuum cleaner to clean your quilt will help to remove the dirt and dust. We recommend vacuuming your quilt at least once a week. Besides, this method of cleaning is not a challenging task.
Always inspect for loose threads:
It would help if you always looked for stretched seams or loose threads from time to time, especially before washing your quilt. Remember, it is always best to fix a problem when it is still minor.
Dry Cleaning:
Dry cleaning is one of the best ways to keep your quilt clean, mostly if you have not used your quilt for an extended period. However, you should not if you did not do it frequently. We recommend dry cleaning it once after two to three months.

Snoring or Sleep Apnea?
Have you ever seen someone gasp for air mid-sleep and then go back to sleep peacefully as if nothing happened? It is disturbing to look at and more annoying for someone who has to sleep next to them. But the irregular breathing and gasping sound followed by deep sleep are a common sleeping disorder called sleep apnea.
While sleep apnea is often confused with usual snoring problems, it is more complicated and harder to treat. Although not fatal on its own, sleep apnea can lead to life-threatening diseases and even death.
Besides disturbing others while sleeping, even the person suffering from sleep apnea often faces discomfort and irregular sleeping patterns. This condition can lead to fatigue, moodiness, and other underlying diseases of sleep deprivation.
Although sleep apnea is a common disorder, only a few people diagnosed are aware of this condition and seek treatment. There are three types of sleep apnea categorized according to their severity. While some cases are treatable, some are too risky to treat due to other medical conditions.
So if you or someone you know is suffering from sleep apnea, understanding the condition to mitigate the symptoms is essential. Read on to find out everything you need to know about sleep apnea and how you can help someone with the disorder.
So What is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which breathing briefly stops involuntarily during sleep. The pauses or shallow breathing can last a few seconds or even minutes and occurs more frequently than usual.
The word apnea comes from the Greek word “apnous” and “opnoia,” which means “breathless.” In modern times, it can also be called “apnoea,” which refers to a temporary cessation of breathing.
It is characterized by irregular breathing and a loud snoring pattern that ultimately causes “apnea” in which a person momentarily stops breathing. The inability to get a restful sleep can also lead to severe exhaustion and fatigue. In children, it can hamper cognitive abilities or cause hyperactivity.
Types of Sleep Apnea
Source: goodsomnia.com
Two factors can cause sleep apnea. One is due to obstruction of airways. The other reason is a neurological malfunction—both of these cause an imbalance in the blood’s carbon dioxide and oxygen levels. If sleep apnea is not taken care of soon, the condition can impact other underlying health conditions that can lead to severe complications.
Depending on the severity and frequency, an individual can have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), or a mixture of both.
1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Obstructive apnea is the most common form. According to studies, 1 to 6 percent of adults and two percent of children suffer from OSA. It is more common in males than females between the ages of 55 to 60.
OSA develops when there is a blockage of the airways. When we breathe, air goes from the nose through the nasopharynx into the laryngopharynx. Then it goes through the larynx and into the trachea. Somewhere along the path, there might be a blockage in the airflow, leading to breathlessness.
Allergies that cause swelling of the nasopharynx tissue may cause the blockage. It can also be due to swollen glands or tonsils because of an infection. Or, severe overbite, which pulls the jaws back, can also block the airway.
Obesity is also another cause. There can be too much weight in the neck’s soft tissue on overweight people, weighing down the air passage, especially when lying down.
Sleep apnea is most evident at night because hormones change at night, and it causes the muscles around the airways to loosen while sleeping. This means that the muscles are weaker in keeping the airways open, making it more likely to obstruct the airways.
2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
On the other hand, Central apnea is due to a problem in the central nervous system. It is less common than OSA and affects only 1% of the world population.
When a person has CSA, the brain stops the lungs from making an effort to breathe for 10 to 30 seconds. The apnea can last for several seconds even after waking up, disrupting the sleep cycle, and causing panic attacks.
Central Sleep apnea begins with an episode of hyperpnea, which happens when the brain causes the lungs to hyperventilate during sleep by increasing the respiratory rate. This rapid breathing causes a drop in blood carbon dioxide levels. When the carbon dioxide level falls below the standard level, the body slips into a state where it makes no effort to breathe and, therefore, taking no oxygen.
This pattern causes the carbon dioxide level to rise back to the average level. As the apnea persists, it keeps increasing to a point where it is called hypercapnia. The high carbon dioxide level triggers hyperpnoea again, and the cycle starts all over.
The respiratory system goes rapidly back and forth between two states: first, it makes no effort to breathe and then hyperventilates with no balance in between.
3. Mixed Apnea
When an individual displays symptoms of both CSA and OSA, the condition is diagnosed under mixed apnea. It is the most common type of sleep apnea.
According to a Mayo Clinic study, 15% of patients who have OSA also exhibit mixed apnea. Sometimes patients are treated with CPAP machines while others with PAP therapy.
Effects of Sleep Apnea
Source: snoremdcanada.ca
Sleep apnea’s direct effects are not always visible right away but slowly build over time when not treated. The results can be minor or severe, depending on other health factors. Some of the most common and apparent impacts of sleep apnea are as below:
Severe sleep deprivation
Sleep deprivation is, perhaps, one of the most common and evident effects of sleep apnea for the patient and others.
Sleep Apnea disrupts sleeping patterns because the individual wakes up often and at random hours. Usually, they are not even aware of what woke them up, except for the feeling of breathlessness. It can be a regular occurrence or on random nights.
Nocturia
Interrupted sleep for long days can cause nocturia, which is the excessive need to urinate at night due to stress-induced insomnia. The effects are also visible during the day because the inability to sleep peacefully leads to difficulty performing normal physical functions. The body gets exhausted and even the slight urge to urinate becomes uncontrollable.
Loud Snoring
Apnea episodes are usually accompanied by loud snoring, which can interrupt the sleep of others as well. The snoring can sometimes be so loud that it often keeps others sleeping in the next room awake. On other nights, it sounds like they are choking for a few seconds, and then it stops again.
Usually, the person with sleep apnea is unaware of the snoring and wakes up only when breathing becomes too difficult. These episodes can happen sometimes or every night but frequently each time.
Triggering other health problems
A drop in oxygen level during sleep apnea can also trigger other health problems. When there is a shortage of oxygen circulation, it can trigger angina chest pain and irritate heart cells that lead to an irregular heartbeat.
It can also trigger respiratory failure for people with ongoing respiratory problems. In severe cases, this can lead to a stroke or heart attack—even, other risks like heart failure, respiratory failure, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
Causes of Sleep Apnea
There are many underlying health conditions linked to sleep apnea. Some are genetics and hereditary, while others are due to lifestyle and physical features. The most common causes are:
Overweight
Excess fat due to obesity is one of the most common factors. Fats deposits around the neck obstruct breathing by weighing down the airways while lying down. It also prevents individuals from positioning the head correctly while sleeping and constrains the air passage.
Family History
If a family member has sleep apnea, you will likely develop the symptoms because sleep apnea can be hereditary. This factor is due to the genetic composition of physical features such as the jaw structure and obesity that cause sleep apnea.
Allergies
Pollen, dust, or other types of allergies irritate the nasal and airways causing them to swell. Once these parts swell and get inflamed, breathing becomes difficult and irregular. Nasal congestion due to allergies also dries out the mouth and obstructs the steady airflow further.
Small Breathing Airways
Some people are born with a smaller airway passage. Sometimes it’s genetics, and other times, it is due to natural physical features. Either way, when the airways are smaller than usual, breathing becomes difficult.
Enlarged Tonsils or tongue
Enlarged tonsils or tongue due to infections can hamper the way you breathe while sleeping or awake. But when enlarged, the tonsils relax on your throat while sleeping and block the free passage of air, requiring more effort to breathe.
Gastro reflux
Acid reflux due to gastrointestinal problems is another common cause. The liver, lungs, and airways work overtime to keep the reflux in control, requiring more oxygen and faster breathing. The acid reflux also affects the oesophagus, which is a vital organ to help you breathe properly.
Deviated Septum
When the nasal bone and cartilage that divides the two nostrils are slightly bent, it obstructs airflow into the lungs. This misalignment is one of the leading causes of snoring when one has sleep apnea. It makes the nose more sensitive and prone to allergies and sinus problems, leading to sleep apnea.
Misaligned jaw bone
When the upper jaw does not align with the lower jaw, sleeping with a closed mouth becomes uncomfortable. Because of this, people with narrow, small, or recessed jaws often have sleep apnea. Such jaw bone structures tend to create narrow airway paths and cause breathing irregularities while sleeping.
Large neck circumference (greater than 16 to 17 inches)
The ideal neck circumference for men is 17 inches and 16 inches in women. People with a thicker neck are more prone to OSA because it blocks the air passage when the airways relax during sleep. Larger neck circumference often means more fats around the throat and airways, causing the person to snore or wheeze while sleeping.
Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
While all the factors mentioned above are some indicators seen in most people, it is not guaranteed that these cause sleep apnea. They can indicate other sleeping disorders and regular snoring. The only way to be sure if it is sleep apnea is through a medical examination.
Other tell-tale signs of sleep apnea are:
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS)
Nighttime sleep is when the body regenerates and refuels itself during several hours of sleep. But interrupted sleep prevents the body from repairing and recharging, making the body crave sleep during the daytime.
People with sleep apnea think they are getting 8 hours of sleep, but in fact, they are only sleeping for a few minutes before being interrupted by their breathing. They often wonder why they are always sleepy during the day because they are unaware of the sleep disorder.
Impaired Alertness
Peaceful sleep refreshes your brain cells, and cognitive functions get sharper. However, people with sleep apnea often complain of impaired alertness. This condition is common both in children and adults. They are unable to concentrate and focus for long without feeling dazed. Their motor and cognitive capacities get slower, and their vision quickly gets blurred even under normal conditions.
Behavioural changes
People with sleep apnea often display behaviour change. It is usually an adverse reaction as they are bothered by unexpected mood swings throughout the day. They are easily irritated and often prefer being alone as they cannot explain their behaviour, which leads to the next symptom.
Fatigue and Depression
Being unable to understand the cause of behavioural change and constant fatigue often leads to voluntary isolation. It is common for people with depression to display some levels of sleep apnea. The correlation is evident because depression affects breathing and sleeping patterns, and sleep apnea worsens depression.
If these vital signs and symptoms are apparent, check the sleeping pattern. It could lead to diagnosing early signs of sleep apnea and could save lives.
Sleep Apnea Risk Groups
While sleep apnea can affect anyone, there are some people more vulnerable to the condition than others. Some of the vulnerable groups of people more likely to develop sleep apnea are:
Males
Studies show that out of the population diagnosed with sleep apnea, the majority of them are males. The reason is still under debate, but most people believe it is due to the difference in lifestyle and life choices. Sleep apnea is more prominent in males too, because they snore louder, and it gets easier to diagnose them.
Age over 65
People over sixty-five have weaker throat muscles and are more prone to other health issues causing sleep disorder. This problem arises because sleep apnea is a result of physical and neurological imbalances that weakens with age.
Heart and lung Disorder
People with heart and lung diseases have difficulty converting carbon dioxide, and oxygen like ordinary people do. Heartbeat rate and lung functions become slower and obstruct breathing, which leads to sleep apnea.
High Blood Pressure
A sudden drop in blood oxygen level and a sudden rise in carbon dioxide accompanies sleep apnea. This extreme high and lows cause hypertension or high blood pressure, which can sometimes lead to a stroke. So people with high blood pressures are at a very high risk of developing conditions related to sleeping disorders.
Is it Sleep Apnea or Just Snoring?
While many people confuse sleep apnea as loud snoring, it is, in fact, quite different. Note that even though snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, all snorers do not have a sleeping disorder.
The reason that people snore while sleeping is almost the same as sleep apnea. But sleep apnea is far more severe and disturbing.
While both snoring and sleep apnea can be equally disturbing for other sleepers, sleep apnea affects the individuals differently. Snoring is non-life threatening, whereas sleep apnea triggers many other health conditions that can even cause death in the long run.
If someone is snoring too frequently or at an alarming pace, it can indicate other physical conditions or sleep apnea. So snoring is not something we should overlook. If the snoring rates either cause discomfort and match the other symptoms of sleep apnea, act quickly. Call a doctor and have a sleep study to determine the cause as soon as possible.
Diagnosing Sleep apnea
Diagnosing sleep apnea requires a professional sleep study to identify sleep apnea episodes. To diagnose a sleeping pattern as sleep apnea, the person must display at least five apnea episodes while asleep- the more episodes, the more severe the sleep apnea.
Since people with the condition are usually unaware, family members are generally the first to notice it. The asleep study usually involves getting monitored overnight with a polysomnogram. It is a medical instrument that tracks brain movements, oxygen and carbon dioxide blood levels, vital signs, and outwards symptoms like snoring and movement.
Treating Sleep Apnea
Treating sleep apnea starts with eliminating depressant things like sleeping pills, alcohol, and other respiratory obstructing medications. Avoiding these things is essential because they can relax the throat muscles around the airways and make the airways more likely to weaken and collapse during sleep.
Though avoiding several things can lessen the symptoms, treating sleep apnea is more complicated. However, some of the effective measures for treating sleep apnea are:
Lifestyle changes
Since the effects of sleep apnea are sleeping disorder and respiratory obstruction, making positive lifestyle changes to eliminate these effects should be a priority. Eat a healthier diet and exercise, wash up before sleep to clear the nasal passage, and improve personal hygiene to prevent allergies. Taking these precautions can mitigate snoring and help you sleep better.
Losing weight
Obesity is also another cause of airway passage obstruction. The only way to prevent severe condition is by losing weight. Practising neck movement and strengthening neck muscles to get the excess weight off the neck.
Quit Smoking
Besides the many reasons to quit smoking, individuals with sleep apnea should consider leaving the cigarettes. It irritates the respiratory system and worsens many other health conditions.
Sleep on Side
Instead of lying on the back, sleeping on the side also helps because it allows better airflow into the lungs. Since the lungs are on our bodies’ backs, the sideway sleeping posture takes the bodyweight away.
CPAP device
For severe sleep apnea, people can use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. This CPAP machine forces the airways by supplying a steady stream of pressurized air. The air passes through a nasal prong or plastic face mask. When used correctly and continuously, it is beneficial. But many people eventually stop using it after some time because they find these masks annoying or difficult to wear, so the problem persists.
Some people with OSA can benefit from a custom made oral mouthpiece that helps improve airflow during sleep.
Surgery
Sometimes surgical procedures can treat OSA. For example, surgeons can remove excess adenoid tissue from the throat and widen it. The realignment of jaw bones is also an option that some people with severe apnea require. However, surgical procedures are complicated because anaesthesia and surgical swelling can worsen sleep apnea in the short term.
Conclusion
To sum up, sleep apnea is a minor health issue with grave consequences when untreated. Even though the symptoms and causes vary for each individual, the lifelong effects are the same. The main concern about both types of sleep apnea is the long pauses between breaths that interrupt the regular sleeping pattern.
Since individuals with sleep apnea conditions are usually unaware of their symptoms, it can go untreated for a long time. However, with the observation of family members and scientific instruments, diagnosing sleep apnea is possible.
Treatment of sleep apnea is both simple and complicated, so knowing the severity and the cause is vital for treating it. The trick is to diagnose it correctly as soon as possible.

Macoda Mattress Review
In our Macoda mattress review, we go over why it was recently awarded Australia’ s “Best Comfort” Mattress in a Box for 2019. Our mattress was old and we were both having lower back and hip pain. After spending days comparing mattresses we chose Macoda. We have not looked back and could not be happier in our choice. Over a two week period our pains slowly disappeared. Have recommended to family and friends. Thanks Chris
Table of Contents
What's the Macoda mattress made from?
The Macoda mattress has three different types of foam comfort layers natural latex, gel memory foam, and polyurethane support foam. Underneath the foam is the pocket springs base providing support and combined with the premium latex layer the bounce to the bed, one of the reasons it won the “best comfort” mattress of 2019.
Let’s go through the layers starting at the top.
Premium natural latex – The top layer is a natural latex that is highly responsive and gives the bounce to the mattress. Natural latex also helps you sleep more naturally cool and prevents the sinking feeling of most foam mattresses. The premium latex is hypoallergenic meaning it ‘s free from nasty chemicals (Oeko-Tex tested) and resistant to dust mites and mould.
Gel-infused memory foam – The middle layer memory foam layer has advanced cooling gel-infused into it. This gel reacts to your body temperature and draws heat away, but that’s not all. Because Australians design it with the climate in mind, it also has a breathable structure for increased airflow. The memory foam is less responsive than the latex layer only contouring when pressure is applied, and this layer can be swapped around for a firmer feel.
Polyurethane support foam – The support foam is firm and helps cradle the spine by conforming to your body shape, distributing your weight evenly. The high-quality polyurethane foam grants support, durability, and prevents the mattress from sagging after years of use.
5-Zone Pocket springs – The foundation of the bed is the 5-zone support coils that are wrapped individually. These springs work independently from each other, with different levels of support for your body and relieving pressure points. The added benefit of having a hybrid design is the edges of the bed don’t get that sag, and you won’t roll off your bed in the night.
Bamboo Cover – The cover encasing all these materials is made out of bamboo fabric. The bamboo wicks moisture away and keeps you dry and comfortable. Bamboo is soft, breathable and hypoallergenic meanings it’s excellent against allergies and lets air through the bed. The cover is also washable and looks great on the Macoda mattress.
Macoda Thickness and Weight
We found in our Macoda review that the mattress is denser than an all-foam bed and some other spring mattress brands. We would recommend having two people move the mattress into position before unpacking. Because of the extra layers of support, it sits higher than other brands (29cm) making getting out of bed in the morning much more manageable.

Our Macoda mattress is great. It's well designed, and seems to be made from high quality materials. The customisable firmness options are very convenient, and results in a plush, comfortable feel, which is also supportive thanks to the pocket spring base layer. The matress was a huge improvement on our previous one, and I definitely feel less stiff when I wake up in the morning. We did notice some black marks on the underside of the top cover when we first received the matress, however when informed Macoda they happily sent us a replacement cover for free.

Is the Macoda mattress right for you?
After going through hundreds of customer reviews and complying our Macoda mattress review, we have concluded that the bed is excellent for most people especially side sleepers. However, if you tend to sleep on your back and prefer a very firm mattress, then this mattress might not be right for you. Luckily there is free delivery and a 100 night trial so if you decide it doesn’t match your sleeping position and want a firmer mattress you can return it for free.
The Macoda mattress has interchangeable foams so you can have a medium feel (5/10) or a medium-firm feel (6.5). With the advanced foam system, it’s designed for summer nights to keep you fresh. The premium natural latex in combination with the pocket springs gives the mattress a responsive bounce and pressure relief that most people love.
There’s minimal partner disturbance because of the ability of the three foam layers to absorb the movement and then the individually 5-zone pocket springs. This means less tossing and turning for a better nights sleep or if your bed buddy decides to get up in the night.
Is the Macoda mattress good for back pain? From looking at the Macoda mattress reviews, a lot of people have found back, hip, and shoulder relief from changing to this mattress. You can see why from the materials used and the comfort of the bed.
Overall, we love the Macoda mattress it is affordable and built for comfort. Even though it’s a lesser-known brand we think it will be a lot bigger in the coming years. So make sure you get the deal while it lasts. Wake up on the right side of the bed in the morning and get a Macoda mattress.

Best Eva Alternative in 2020
Maybe you like Eva design but don’t trust the company after the $1 bait and switch scandal and want an Eva alternative. The mattress is a hybrid mattress gel memory foam, latex, density foam, and pocket springs. This makes the mattress a hybrid which some people prefer, and some people don’t.
Whatever the reason, we have gathered a comprehensive list of mattresses to suit every Australian looking for a great night’s sleep. Australians highly recommend all of the alternatives to Eva in this collection.
Best Alternative : Macoda

Macoda Review
Macoda is a hybrid mattress of high quality, and comfort is also a close match to Eva in terms of pricing and comfort. The mattress was designed by two Australians who had comfort, quality and Aussie summer nights in mind. The Macoda keeps you cool with the natural pinhole latex, gel-infused memory foam, and the individually encased pocket springs.
The Macoda also is customisable, meaning you can change two foam inserts around for a different firmness level. If you’re a fussy sleeper it’s excellent, you can pick between a soft, medium and firm comfort feel,  and it only takes a couple of minutes.
The Macoda is a four-layer mattress in total. Three of the layers are foam, and then the base contains pocket springs which are encased in a plush bamboo cover that is as comfortable as it looks. The foam layers are latex, gel-infused memory foam, and high-density support foam.

Noa Review
The Noa luxe is an upgrade alternative if you’re looking for a mattress that is unique and top of the range then this is the choice for you. The Luxe is the top of the range mattress in the Noa collection. Some of the extra features are the addition of bamboo charcoal latex which is an eco-friendly material that is fragrance-free, allergen-free, and non-toxic.
The porous structure makes the layer absorb excess moisture and repels odors. I haven’t seen another mattress have bamboo charcoal latex material before and it’s a great luxury to have in your mattress. The Noa Luxe includes a micro-coils layer that used to be included in the Eva design but was removed. The micro coils expand and contract in response to the pressure of your body, making the Noa Luxe extremely comfortable.
The mattress is slightly more expensive than the Eva, but with this mattress, you do get what you pay for.

Emma Review
Emma is a top-rated mattress in Europe with 30 + awards and over 400,000 people sleeping on them. They have recently arrived in Australia, and we now understand why they have so many awards. Emma is great to sleep on; it’s slightly firmer compared to most memory foams, which is why a lot of people love the Emma.
Emma has three layers of foam in total, a breathable eco-friendly hyperfoam, supportive polyether foam, and pressure-relieving point-elastic foam (mattress marketing jargon). Basically, high-quality memory foams designed for pressure relief as you might beagle to tell from the visible 7 zone design on their website. The mattress is comfortable, and if you’re looking for a memory foam mattress instead of a hybrid mattress, then I recommend this option.

The Hugo is another memory foam alternative that is Australian made. With the Hugo, you get premium pressure relief and comfort without feeling ‘too-firm’ because of the combination of the four foam layers that is great for all body types and sleeping positions.
Being Australian made Hugo also has excellent customer service and offers same-day delivery to Melbourne metro areas and everywhere else in Aus is still fast and free.
The Hugo mattress still has increased airflow and bounce because of the foams used in the design. Starting at the top and working our way down, the latex top layer is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial to reduce bacteria. Next, you have memory foam that matches your body’s natural contours, then a premium transition layer (that most mattresses skip over), and a high-density foam foundation that adds support and longevity.

Still, you will find the Noa Luxe to have some premium extras, one of them being the addition of bamboo charcoal latex. The material is eco-friendly, fragrance-free, allergen-free, and non-toxic.
Also, the permeable structure absorbs excess moisture and repels odors. The Noa Luxe is a hybrid mattress, so instead of a foam base, you have pocket springs, which is different from the Ecosa. From all the mattresses we have reviewed there’s not many that include micro-coils and this latest innovation expands and contracts in response to the pressure of your body, making the Noa Luxe extremely comfortable.

The different opinions give a soft, medium and firm comfort level depending on the set, and it only takes a couple of minutes. Great for fussy sleepers.
The Macoda contains 3 layers of foam and pocket springs all encased in a plush bamboo cover that is as comfortable as it looks. The layers of foam are latex, memory foam, high-density support foam.

Emma Review
Emma is a top-rated mattress in Europe with 30 + awards and over 400,000 people sleeping on them. They have recently arrived in Australia, and we now understand why they have so many awards. Emma is great to sleep on; it’s slightly firmer compared to most memory foams, which is why most people prefer them.
The Emma has 3 layers of foam, a breathable eco-friendly hyperfoam, supportive polyether foam, and pressure-relieving point-elastic foam (excuse the mattress marketing jargon). All joking aside the mattress is very comfortable, and if you’re looking for a memory foam mattress, it’s an excellent Sleeping Duck alternative.

Hugo Review
The Hugo is another memory foam alternative that is Australian made. With the Hugo, you get premium pressure relief and comfort without feeling ‘too-firm’ because of the combination of the 4 foam layers that is great for all body types and sleeping positions.

Noa Review
The Noa luxe is the top of the mattress in the Noa collection. It has a lot of the same features that have made the Noa so great. However, the Noa Luxe has a few great extras, one of them being the addition of bamboo charcoal latex which is an eco-friendly material that is fragrance-free, allergen-free, and non-toxic.
Additionally, the porous structure makes the layer absorb excess moisture and repels odors. The Noa Luxe is a hybrid mattress like the Sleeping Duck, but instead of just having a pocket spring base, the Noa Luxe also has micro-coils. This latest innovation expands and contracts in response to the pressure of your body, making the Noa Luxe extremely comfortable.
We have this choice as an upgrade alternative even though the price is lower because of the incredible quality and comfort.

Zinus Review
The Zinus ICoil is our budget choice; in fact you can get three queen-sized mattress for the same price as one Sleeping Duck mattress. However, price isn’t always the best indicator to go off when choosing a mattress.
Most of the time, you will find the foams on cheap mattresses to be treated or contain nasty chemicals. Which you will be breathing in every night, for years. However, the Zinus ICoil is Certi-PUR US certified, so you don’t have to worry about that.
You can find the Zinus ICoil on Amazon.com.au, it also includes a 10-year warranty and is also a hybrid mattress. But, don’t expect the same level of comfort as the other mattresses on the list.

Final Verdict
After a popular request, we collected these beds because Aussies wanted an alternative to the Sleeping Duck. We have mattresses that are of similar build quality (if not better) and also included some options in the all-foam category.
Everyone is different, and we have tried to include choices to make everyone happy. The beds on this list have positive feedback from other Australians on ProductReview.com.au and Choice, as well as other places around the web as we qualified them.
Below is our top pick and runner up.
Best Alternative : Macoda
The best alternative to the Sleeping Duck is the Macoda mattress. It has a similar price, well you save a bit of money. But in terms of the quality, it’s hard to differentiate between them. I think Macoda is a lot more comfortable, and you can customise the layers to get a different level of firmness, but you can’t change half and half like the Sleeping Duck. However, in my experience, it’s more hassle than it’s worth.
The Macoda layers are latex, memory foam, high-density support foam, and pocket springs. All encased in that incredibly comfortable cover that does feel as comfortable as it looks. Overall, if you’re looking for a mattress that is similar but without the price tag, then the Macoda is an excellent choice. Use the code SLEEPBETTER for $100 off.
Runner Ups
Upgrade Alternative : Noa Luxe
One of the highest quality beds in the mattress in a box industry. The Noa luxe is made up of 3 layers of foam and 2 layers of springs. The foams layers are gel-infused memory foam, bamboo charcoal latex, and adaptive transition foam.
These go in combination with the micro coils and pocket springs. Making the Noa Luxe a very premium designed mattress, and I believe the only one that offers bamboo charcoal latex and micro coils in Australia.
And the kicker is that you can pick it up at a lower price with the current $300 off deal.
Foam Alternative : Emma
Looking for a Different mattress to the Sleeping Duck because you don’t like springs? Then Emma is an excellent choice, it’s one of the most popular beds in Europe winning over 30 awards and boasting some impressive stats.
So it’s safe to say Emma gives a lot of people a great night’s sleep. As a bonus, the mattress is very competitively priced and delivered for free in Australia.

Koala Alternative in 2020
Koala is the most popular mattress in Australia, they took Aus by storm with the wine test video that has nearly 5 million views now. However, just because it went viral on social media doesn’t always mean it’s the best mattress for you.
In this post we at Koala alternatives, some of the reasons people want a different option to the Koala is because the popularity means higher costs and memory foam gets hot, especially on those summer Australian nights.
That’s why our top pick is a hybrid mattress which is cooler than an all foam mattress.
Best Alternative : Noa

Noa uses the combination of foam and springs to give a great balance of comfort. You get all the pressure relieving benefits of memory foam with the added gentle push back from the pocket springs.
Plus the gel-infused memory foam and the addition of springs allows better airflow keeping the mattress from retaining heat and keeping you warm. Overall, we love the Noa bed and it’s currently available in Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK, and Australia.

We always loved the comfort level of the Macoda and recently they have taken it to the next level. Macoda now includes two foam inserts that can be flipped to adjust between a soft, medium and firm comfort setting in a couple of minutes.

Final Verdict
Everyone is different, that’s why we have a range of mattresses to fit everyone looking for a koala alternative. The mattress in a box market is a very competitive and confusing space with all the mattress marketing jargon being thrown around, we try and simplify it.
All of the comparisons mentioned are high quality mattresses available in Australia. We have done extensie single reviews on each of the mattresses and looked at thousands of real customer reviews to get an unbiased third party opinion on top of our reviews. Below you will find our top pick and the two runner ups and our reason why to pick them.
Best Alternative : Noa
We have picked the Noa as our best alternative because of the increased airflow, the quality, certified foams, happy customers, and many other areas. The mattress is made up of 4 layers in total, starting from the top going down. Open-cell latex, gel-infused memory foam, adaptive transition foam, and then the durable foundation of pocket springs.
The mattress has recently been redesigned to be even more comfortable and has recently expanded to the UK because of the continued support of happy customers in Australia and Canada. Plus it’s very competitively priced, you’ll find it cheaper than most all-foam mattresses which is incredible. They currently have a deal to save $300 on the bed. So make sure you check out the current price while the deal is on.
Runner Ups
Closest match : Emma
This mattress is very similar to the Koala as previously mentioned, so if you’re looking for a bed that’s close to the Koala then Emma would be an excellent choice for you. It’s the closest in terms of the foams used, and popularity. The pricing is very similar also however the Emma mattress does seem to be lighter on the wallet at the minute.
Australian made : Hugo
Hugo doesn’t seem to get mentioned too much in the mattress in a box market. However, this mattress is very comfortable, has 4 layers of foam instead of the Koala’s 2, it has a latex top layer that’s a nice change from memory foam. We would recommend Hugo if you’re looking for a high quality Australian made alternative.

Zinus iCoil Pocket Spring Review
Before we dive into the review details, I’d like to emphasise some of the significant points about why I love this mattress. Apart from the dazzling white and grey exteriors, the following are the reasons why this product has my attention:
It’s got a medium to firm support, and I’d rate it 6 on a scale of 1-10
It’s made from high-quality foam that’s Certi-PUR US certified
It’s available in multiple sizes (I’ve reviewed the Queen size, naturally!)
It provides the right mix of comfort and support
The product comes with a massive 10-year warranty
It’s suitable for multiple sleeper types
It’s an affordable mattress
All the above points have made me a fan of this stellar product, and I’m sure you’ll love it once you get to know its many benefits. Well then, without further ado, let’s get to the thick of things.

Whats the Zinus like to sleep on?
When it comes to mattresses, the proof of the pudding is in the sleeping, and I must admit that the Zinus iCoil does provide an excellent sleeping experience. As I already mentioned above, the mattress has a medium to firm feel and is best suited for side and back sleepers.
The mattress provides stable edge support; this is due to the edges of the bed, which have been tightly knit to provide adequate firmness. Plus, the surrounding tempered steel coils also contribute to enhancing the edge support.
The high-density foam used in the mattress provides ample support and just the right amount of sinkage. This means that even though you’ll get the cuddly feeling of comfort, you don’t have to worry about sinking in too deep.
I was also impressed with the minimal motion transfer of the product. My husband tends to move around in his sleep, and with other mattresses, my sleep was continually disturbed. But the Zinus iCoil ensures that his movements don’t affect my sleep cycle.
Another problem that I usually face when it comes to mattresses is that of temperature control. I tend to sleep a bit hot, and regular beds just have me waking up all sweaty in the middle of the night.
Thankfully, this mattress takes care of that problem as well. The high-density top quilting, together with the layer of comfort foam, ensures adequate air-flow and guarantees stable sleeping temperatures.
Overall, considering the sinkage, edge support, and comfortable firmness, I think this mattress is right in the Goldilocks zone when it comes to comfort. Plus, there’s no problem of being disturbed by your partner’s sleepy-time movements, which is a blessing.
What the bed made from?
Now that I’ve got you all up to speed with how the mattress sleeps, let’s take a look under the hood and see what it’s made of. The product comprises four individual layers, all of which contribute to enhancing the comfort factor and providing adequate support.
In the following sections, I’ll break down the layers of the mattress, so that you can get a good idea of the functioning of each.
Top Quilting Layer
This is the topmost layer of the mattress and is made from 3.18cm High-Density Foam. The topmost layer provides adequate temperature control, together with the right balance of comfort and softness.
Comfort Foam Layer
Below the quilting layer is the Comfort Foam layer, which is responsible for the cool and comfortable sleep that this mattress provides. At a thickness of 5.08cm, this layer ensures proper temperature control and provides the right level of sinkage.
High-Density Foam Layer
Below the Comfort Foam is a layer of 1.27cm High-Density Foam, which contributes to the support factor. This is meant to act as a transition layer between the upper quilting and foam layers, and the Pocket Spring base, which gives this mattress its world-class support.
Pocket Spring Layer
Now, this is the layer that I really want to talk about. The 19.05cm Pocket Spring layer of this mattress is made from individual springs enclosed in their own fabric pockets. As each of these springs is independent of each other, they react only to the pressure applied to specific areas.
This results in more significant personalised support, and the minimal motion transfer that I mentioned earlier. Along with that, this mattress provides consistent firmness throughout, which ensures top-notch sleeping experience across the entire surface.
The combination of the above four layers works to provide complete body support and the perfect combination of medium to high firmness. Plus, they help to hold my body weight amply, leading to a comfortable and well-supported sleep.
Another point that I’d like to mention is the pressure relief that this mattress provides. Contrary to open coil spring systems, which lead to the building up of pressure points, it offers greater body support, thus preventing pressure points from developing.
How much does the Zinus weigh?
When buying mattresses, one of the most important aspects that I like to pay attention to is the thickness of the mattress. Too thin, and you’re unlikely to be comfortable; too thick, and you might just have to put in extra effort just to get on the bed.
Another aspect that I also consider when choosing mattresses is weight. The weight of the bed determines how easily you can move it from one room to another, which is an essential factor if you ask me.
Thankfully, the Zinus iCoil mattress comes in multiple sizes and weights, which means you can choose any one according to your needs. The following is a detailed breakup of the dimensions of each variant:
Single: 190 x 91 x 30cm, weighing 22.7kg
Double: 190 x 137 x 30cm, weighing 33.4kg
Queen: 203 x 152 x 30cm, weighing 37.8kg
King: 203 x 183 x 30cm, weighing 47.5kg
As you can well understand, the dimensions of this mattress are adequate to fit any bed, and the Queen size is just optimal for my home in terms of size and weight. In fact, most of my friends in Melbourne are using it with unmatched satisfaction, which is how I got to know of it in the first place.
How much does this bed cost?
With so many advanced features and benefits, you might think that these mattresses are rather costly. Well, you’ll be surprised to learn that all Zinus iCoil products are very affordable, as you can see from the price breakdown below:
Single: $239
Double: $315
Queen: $359
King: $420
Prices can change and may be different to the table listed above.
The above prices are exclusive of the delivery charge, which is added to the cost. Even then, I think the price is rather reasonable. This is a good thing, considering that a hefty bill is likely to lead to sleepless nights.

Bonus features
Apart from the many excellent and advantageous features that we’ve been talking about, the Zinus iCoil also comes with quite a few bonuses. In this section, I’m going to introduce you to these.
First, I’d like to mention the massive 10-year warranty that the product comes with. While no one expects a single mattress to last a lifetime, a decade is a rather long period, and the warranty is a testament to the quality of the product.
Naturally, it came as no surprise when I learned that the foam it uses is CertiPUR-US certified. This ensures that every unit is guaranteed to provide the best of durability and performance.
I also like how the product comes with a 100-night trial period. Just try it out for size and comfort, and if you don’t like it, you can always opt for a refund. Though I’m sure, you won’t want to let go of this one once you get some sleep on it.
Finally, I must mention the smart packing in which the mattress is delivered, compressed, and rolled. This makes it easy to unpack and roll out on any bed of your choice. On that note, I’d like to talk a bit about the Zinus Suzanne Metal And Pinewood Bed, which goes great with this product.
Zinus Suzanne Double Metal And Pine Wood Platform Bed
This platform bed matches impeccably with the Zinus iCoil mattress I’ve been talking about. Available in multiple sizes, this bed frame fits the iCoil just right, and delivers an unmatched sleeping experience.
find the bed frame on Amazon
Why Do I Recommend It?
Very few people realise this, but the longevity of a mattress depends upon the bed frame to a large extent. The Zinus Suzanne’s sturdy steel frame with wooden slats provides the right support, which helps extend the life of the mattress.
I love how the bed frame is easy to assemble and can be fixed up in no time. What’s more, foam-padded tape has been added to the steel frame to ensure noise-free use. Plus, non-slip tapes on the slats prevent the mattress from moving out of place.
The bed is available in single, double, queen and king sizes, which means it’s suitable for all mattress dimensions. Add to that the industrial styling, consisting of black metal frame together with solid pine wood finish, and you’ve got a bed that’s durable, attractive and comfortable, all at the same time.
Just pair it with a Zinus iCoil and get ready for sound sleep.
Is This The Right Mattress For You?
I’m sure that by now, you’ve already fallen in love with this mattress, and must be ready to get one. Still, before I take your leave, I’d like to go over its salient features, so that you can make sure whether this is the right one.
When it comes to softness, the Zinus iCoil has a medium to firm feel, which I rate at 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. This makes the mattress well suited for most sleeper types, even combination sleepers.
If you’re suffering from back problems, such as stiffness and spinal pain, then this product can help you out there as well. The superb pressure relief that this product offers ensures that no pressure points are developed in your pain-sensitive areas.
However, in case you’re looking for a super-soft bed, then I suggest you let this one go by. It’s soft, but not enough to offer an overwhelming sink-in experience. But if you’re a fan of adequate support and comfort, then this is the one for you.
Final Verdict
So, now to answer the final question: should you get one? I say certainly; go for it if you love a restful night’s sleep to perk up your days. Also, it’s perfect for couples as well, due to the minimal motion transfer that it offers.
No matter where you live in Australia, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the excellent sleep that this mattress will provide. After all, at the end of a tiring day, everybody needs to get some rest. And the Zinus iCoil helps you do just that.
That’s all for now, mates; catch you later!

Best Mattress For Kids
Are you tired of searching for the best mattress for kids? Believe me; you’re not alone in this predicament.
Like thousands of other parents, I’ve had to go through the trouble of selecting mattresses for my pair of mischief-makers. Needless to say, the task has been easier said than done with so many options available in the market.
However, my expeditions have given me enough experience in this department. And today, to help all those parents who are in the same boat, I’ve decided to share my knowledge on the subject.
G’ day, I’m Isabella, and today I’m here to share my recommendations for the best mattress for kids. Along with that, I’m also going to give you a look at some of the additional accessories that you might need.
Let’s get going, then!
Best Overall: The Noa Mattress
Check the current price on Noahome.com
Hybrid mattresses have always been my favourite way to sleep, and naturally, I wanted the same for my kids as well. That’s why, when I stumbled upon the Noah mattress, I was eager to give it a try.
And I’m glad to say, it didn’t disappoint! Blending natural latex, cooling memory foam and supportive pocket springs, this hybrid delivers a wonderfully comfortable experience for kids (as well as adults). Plus, it’s incredibly affordable, which is another reason to get it.
I tried out the mattress for some nights before handing it over to my kids, and here’s what I found out about it.
How Was My Experience?
Why is choosing kids’ mattresses tough? Because the kids are going to be pretty tough on the mattress itself! The mattress becomes a plaything for them, and at the same time, they want it to be comfortable as well.
Thankfully, the Noa mattress checks all the right boxes, and then some. Offering a combination of world-class comfort and profound pressure relief, this is a product that’s meant to keep the sleeper cool and comfortable.
As it’s extremely soft and breathable, the Noa mattress allows for ample air circulation. This aids in lowering the sleeper’s body temperature, thus providing cooler, more relaxed sleep. Long story short, it will certainly help the kids sleep peacefully after a long day of study and play.
It’s also provided with a natural Tencel cover that ensures protection from bacteria and allergens. This, I think, is a highly beneficial property as it protects the little ones from any harmful microorganisms.
As I already mentioned once, kids can be tough on mattresses with their playfulness. However, the Noa helps to minimise wrinkles and body impressions, allowing the mattress to retain its original shape for a long time.
The mattress firmness is towards the higher end of the spectrum, and as a result, it provides decent pressure relief, with just a hint of plush comfort. Plus, it’s suitable for all types of sleepers, which makes it one of the few mattresses which have this quality.
I also like the fact that it’s OEKO-TEX and REACH certified; this means the mattress makers don’t compromise on the quality of the product. What’s more, the mattress materials are low on VOCs, so you can be sure it’s safe and non-toxic for the kids.
Overall, I must say this is one of the most affordable options that I’ve encountered in my expedition across the mattress world.
What Could’ve Been Better?
Despite having these superb qualities, I don’t like the fact that this mattress has a heavy design. The weight of the product is more than I anticipated, which makes it tough to move from one room to the other.
Pros: Firm, multi-layer support Unmatched value for money Made from eco-friendly materials 100-night trial period
Cons: Rather heavy design

Best for Toddlers: Baby Cot Inner Spring Mattress
Find on Adairs.com – $149.99
While the first mattress that I had for you is suited for children and adults alike, this one has been made specifically for kids. Affordable and made from eco-friendly materials, this is undoubtedly one of the better mattresses on the market.
How Was My Experience?
Since this one is a cot size mattress, the cost is a lot less than regular-size mattresses. This one is made from breathable materials that help to control the sleep temperature.
In layman terms, this means that your kids will not have to sleep hot anymore. Plus, the side ventilation provides increased airflow, thus reducing its heat and moisture retention.
I’d also like to mention how I really love the anti-allergenic properties of this mattress. I’ve had to face problems with mattress allergies in the past, and don’t want my kids to face the same situation. Thankfully, with this mattress, I don’t have to worry about allergies anymore.
I like a bit of colour when it comes to kids’ rooms, but sadly, this mattress is only available in white. However, the cotton and polyester construction of the unit has me hooked, and I’m sure not going to let this one pass by due to a colour issue.
In addition to all this, the company provides a 60/90 days return window. This means in case you decide to go for another product, you can return this for a full refund. Of course, it must be unused, and the original packaging needs to be retained. In case it is defective, however, you can request for a complete refund that’s exempt from the above criteria.
All said and done, this is one of the better kids mattresses that I got my hands on recently. Suitable for most cot sizes, I certainly recommend this for giving your little ones a good night’s rest that is full of sweet dreams.
What Could’ve Been Better?
My only problem with this mattress is that it’s not waterproof. Kids tend to wet beds due to several reasons, and then cleaning becomes tough. But I do have a solution for that as well. Just read on till the very end to find out.
Pros: Available in multiple sizes Affordable Waterproof and allergen-free Extremely comfortable
Cons: Not water-proof

Also Great: Ecosa Mattress
Check the current price on Ecosa.com
Up next, I’ve got the Ecosa Mattress, and this one offers you a lot of options when it comes to kids’ rooms. The mattress has adjustable firmness that can be changed according to preference. In addition, it’s also waterproof, comes in multiple sizes, and is Certi-PUR US certified.
Just like the Noa model, this one too is well suited for kids as well as adults. I tried it out myself and loved it. Thankfully, so did my kids, and with good reason, as you’re about to find out.
How Was My Experience?
Ecosa mattresses are well known for their versatility, and this one follows the same tradition. The mattress is compatible with slatted beds as well as box springs, and can even work with adjustable bed frames.
I’ve also used it on the floor, and let me tell you the comfort is truly wonderful! I like how the cover is waterproof and contains microfilaments that can protect the mattress from harmful bacteria and dust mites. Which essentially means you don’t have to worry about respiratory problems for the kids.
The five-layer construction with pincore holes allows unmatched breathability and lets the kids sleep cool at night. What’s more, the G7-Gel memory foam layer uses gel particles to provide temperature stabilisation.
Mattresses can often be the source of back problems for children, but its ergonomic support foam takes care of that. Your kids will get maximum back support, allowing them to relax into a deep sleep and wake up feeling ready for the new day.
Also, I tested the mattress out for motion transfer and found it to be minimal. The Eco-Tex Memory Foam also gives it a durable yet bouncy structure. Combined, all this makes for a wonderfully reliable product that takes the cake, in my opinion.
Finally, I’d like to mention that the product comes with a massive 15-year warranty, which is more than enough. Plus, you get free same-day delivery in metros, and in case you don’t like it, just return it within the first 100 nights for a full refund.
What Could’ve Been Better?
The only thing I didn’t like about this product is that it isn’t suitable for stomach sleepers. As one of my kids sleeps on her belly, I had to look for a different option for her. But that’s only applicable for me, and I’m sure not all kids like to sleep on their stomach!
Pros: Extremely low motion transfer Conforms well to most sleeper types Waterproof and dust-mite resistant Affordable product
Cons: Not suitable for stomach sleepers

Few Additional Accessories
As promised, I’ve also included a few additionals that you might just need along with a mattress for the kiddos. Take a look at these items and see if any appeal to you.
Adairs Kids Bamboo Waterproof Mattress Protector
As promised, here’s the solution to the Adairs mattress waterproofing problem. This mattress protector from the same brand is available in multiple sizes and provides an affordable option to make your kid’s mattress waterproof.
Plus, it’s a breathable unit, so there’s no need to worry about any temperature increase. Apart from protection against spillages, it’s anti-allergenic and protects your kids from dust mites, thus giving them a safe surface to sleep on.
Marvel Comics Single Bed Quilt Cover Set
My kids are Marvel freaks, and that’s why I got this quilt set for them, but I’m sure any child will love this colourful accessory with comic book heroes. Multi-coloured and of high quality, the set includes a quilt cover and a pillowcase.
I like the soft yet durable fabric it’s made of, as it suits the kids’ delicate skin. Also, it is machine washable and doesn’t need much maintenance. And yes, it’s not too hard on the pocket, so you don’t have to worry about that.
Adairs Kids Cot Pillow
This pillow is just perfect for little kids’ cots and can be the ideal companion for an Adairs baby mattress. As it’s made from low allergy polyester fibres, there’s no question of your kid developing allergies from this product.
Apart from the above, I also like the soft texture of the cover fabric and the comfortable give of the pillow. Overall, this is one of the better kids’ pillows I’ve had my hands on in a long time.
Adairs Baby Dotty Jersey Fitted Sheet
Available for bassinets as well as cots, Dotty Jersey Fitted Sheets from Adairs comes in pairs and is a very affordable buy. The sheets feature a subtly muted grey spot design, which works well in a nursery.
Plus, the sheets are incredibly soft (you’d have to touch them to get the real feel), and I’m sure kids will love it! Machine as well as hand washable, the sheets are easy to clean and maintain, so they last for a long time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Must Be Kept In Mind While Buying Kids’ Mattresses?
Buying a mattress for kids is no child’s play. You’ll have to consider factors such as durability, waterproofing, thickness, firmness, and back support. Also important is the size, which must fit the bed. Above all, the child should be comfortable sleeping on the mattress.
Can I Use A Hybrid Mattress In My Kids’ Room?
Without a doubt! A hybrid mattress is perfectly suitable for children.
How Frequently Should Kids’ Mattresses Be Washed?
This, of course, depends on the level to which the mattress gathers dirt and dust. I suggest a wash after every three to four months, just to ensure better hygiene.
Conclusion
And there you have it, people! My recommendations for the best mattresses that you can get for children. I hope you liked the options and can take a pick from among the ones I’ve suggested.
That apart, I have one more piece of wisdom to share with you: take it from a mum who knows what’s what!
At the end of the day, all that matters is that your kids catch their needed shuteye. For that, don’t compromise on the mattress for the sake of price. After all, our kids do deserve the best that we can offer them.
That’s all for now. Catch you later!

What to consider when choosing a mattress protector?
If you’re not yet familiar with the in’s and out’s of choosing a good mattress protector, here are some factors that you should look for when selecting one:
Protection
You would want your mattress protector to provide the following benefits:
Prevent liquid stains and damage. A quality mattress protector should be able to block fluids that can be a leading cause of mould and mildew in your mattress.
Block the built-up of dust mites, bed bugs, bacterial, and allergens. Through a protector, dust mites, bed bugs and other allergens can be prevented from infesting your home. Did you know that our mattresses serve as their breeding ground? But through the box spring cover of protectors, it stops the infiltration of these microscopic enemies.
A mattress protector should also require little cleaning and maintenance. Usually, it can just be cleaned through hand washing, making use of a washing machine, or low heat dry cleaning.
Aide in balancing body temperature. A mattress protector should be able to serve its purpose of providing you comfort through regulation of heat during the varying seasons.
Warranty – An ideal warranty should be at least five (5) to 10 years. Thus, you have to check with the manufacturer the warranty they provide with their mattress protectors
 Types of Mattress Protector
There are three (3) popular types of mattress protector:
Encasement – Also known as ‘zippered’, this type of mattress protector can cover your mattress fully.
Fitted – A well-purchased mattress protector, it can fit in your bed by just tucking it in under your bed.
Elastic Strap – You can lay this type of mattress protector on top of your mattress and wrap the straps on its four (4) corners.
 Materials of the Mattress Protector
Usually, a good mattress protector may be made from the following materials:
Cotton – This material is naturally hypoallergenic because of its organic composition, thus the perfect type of material for sensitive skins.
Polyester – This material has durable fabric that comes in various styles and textures. It is easy to wash and at the same time, considerably low-cost compared to other materials.
Vinyl – It is practical to fight against bed bugs and dust mites. It’s also suitable for the cold season as it can make the bed at night cool and breezy. Moreover, compared to other materials, it is relatively easy to clean and maintain.
Polyurethane – A super thin and flexible material that’s a functional component to waterproof a mattress protector. It has microscopic pores that allow air to pass through without trapping in moist, liquid, or dust.
Bamboo – Bamboo-made mattress protector can protect your mattress from odour and also hypoallergenic. It has a comforting fabric, making you feel at ease, cosy and relaxed in your sleep.
Plush Velour – This material is made of knitted fabric that is somehow similar to velvet. Usually made from cotton or synthetic material, plush velour is stretchable and gives a velvet, sensual, soft feeling.
Cooling Covers – This material has a cooling temperature advantage. Compared to other materials, it can easily make bed cool all night, and this should be ideal during the summer season.
 Care for Mattress Protector
Aside from considering the quality of a protector, you should also find the size you’ll be getting and the care it needs. Most often, we keep buying the wrong size of a protector (and even bed sheet more than we admit it), thus before purchasing one, always measure the dimension of your mattress.
Also, it’s best to choose a mattress protector that can be cleaned through hand washing, washing machine, or dry cleaning. However, thoroughly follow the instructions, or it can damage the functionality of the mattress protector.
Is mattress protection worth your Money?
You might say to yourself, “What’s the use of mattress protection if I can just have my mattress deep cleaned?” It may seem like something you’ll consider as a want, but having mattress protection can provide you with several advantages.
Ideal for people with sensitive skin and respiratory conditions
You may not know it, but our mattress plays a huge factor in our health, especially for those that have skin and respiratory illness. With the use of a mattress protector, it provides you and your loved ones an added protection that can trigger irritations and worsen of an existing disease. Maybe all this time, you’ve been pinpointing other things that might have caused your skin asthma, but it was all just because of an unprotected mattress.
 Protects the environment
Some mattresses cannot be recycled and may take at least 500 years to be broken down. And by breaking it down, it means burning it which adds to the tremendous amount of air pollution the world is currently facing. Thus, unprotected mattresses are prone to be disposed of earlier than expected compared to those that have mattress protectors.
 Protects the mattress
Aside from the common dilemma of eliminating foul odours or preventing the growth of stains, mattress protectors can also help in preventing the following from harming our family:
Bacteria such as e.coli
Dead skin cells
Fleas
Fungi
Airborne pollutants
Pet hair and faecal matter
Food crumbs
 Helps to have Quality Sleep
It isn’t just about getting a goodnight sleep – it’s about getting a sufficient amount of sleep. Because sleeping has several benefits, one being the healing and repairing your heart and blood vessels and at the same time prevent the risk of having heart and kidney disease, blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Also, having an adequate sleep improves your mood and can help you in performing better at your daily tasks.
Choosing the best mattress protector all boils down to thorough decision making as this is where the comfort and safety of your sleep heavily rely on.

What to consider
When looking for bed frames, you have to consider different factors – quality, style, and budget.
The Quality
The good thing is that all of the cited Australia’s best bed frames are high-quality. They created the products with the standard designs and durability to make sure they will last long as you use it.
When it comes to quality, you need to scrutinize the woods used for the bed frames. Some manufacturers use ordinary woods. But with the bed frames, we have reviewed, you’ll notice that they are mostly made with timber, acacia, and other high-quality woods. It will reassure you that it will last for several years, and you will never regret it.
The style
The items we have reviewed comes with two different types – the bed frame made with woods and the bed frame made with metal. If you prefer the wood design to give a more natural ambience to your bedroom, wood styles are the perfect choice for you.
On the other hand, if you want a more sophisticated and modern look, metal bed frames could be ideal for your option.
Another thing to consider about bed frame design is your personality. Are you a minimalist who wants to improve your home’s interior? We recommend Sunrise Bed, Timber Bed Base, and Milano Décor Luxury Gas Lift King Bed Frame.
The Sunrise Bed is all white, making your bed looks clean and fresh. On the other hand, the Timber Bed Base has small storage for pillows, but not enough for more substantial materials.
Lastly, the Milano Décor has secret storage inside the bed frame, where you can keep the blanket, pillows, and even your clothes. So, if one of these bed frames fit your personality, don’t forget to choose one.
The budget
Of course, budget is a crucial thing when looking for bed frames. If you have enough budget, you might want to go for wood bed frames since they come with better designs and colours.
However, if you want the cheaper option, we highly recommend the Zinus Suzanne Queen Metal and Pine Wood Platform Bed Frame with Headboard, Zinus Black Modern Metal Steel Platform Queen Size, and Zinus Suzanne Industrial 15cm Queen Low Bed Base.
These products are affordable, but we are reassuring you that it comes with high-quality materials. Most of them are budget-friendly for its quality.

How To Clean A Mattress
Most Australian’s dread cleaning their beddings. It does sound like a job that involves a lot of time and effort. While it’s recommended to wash your bedding at least once a week, the mattress and the pillows should be cleaned at least twice every year.
That sounds like something we can all manage to do – setting aside a minimum of two days spread throughout the year, for cleaning our mattress.
Not to scare you but an average mattress can contain tens of thousands of dust mites (gross, I’m going to save you from the images), so if you don’t clean your mattress as often as recommended, your bed can become the dirtiest and germ-packed item in your house.
To note: beds that are memory foam and latex are more naturally resistant to dust mites.
This is because your mattress is exposed regularly to a lot of dead skin flakes, drool, sweat, hair and skin oil, faecal matter (especially if you tend to sleep naked), and other nasty bodily fluids.
Your mattress plays an essential role in maintaining both your mental and physical health. So it is vital to give your bed some attention once in a while and clean it properly.
In this article, I am going to show you how to remove stains from a mattress. The methods I will be sharing here do not involve strong and expensive chemicals. It is important to remember that this is a space where you have and will spend a considerable chunk of your life, and so the last thing you need is irritating fragrances or harsh chemicals that could be a health hazard.
Let start with some of the most common mattress stains:
How to clean urine from mattress
Before you start, make sure you do a small spot test on an inconspicuous area of your mattress and see the reaction of the mixture on the bed before soaking your bed.
The supplies you will need:
Bicarbonate of soda
Hydrogen peroxide
Dishwashing soap solution
Vinegar
Lavender essential oil, though optional
Spray bottle (empty)
To prepare the cleaning solution, mix about 220ml of hydrogen peroxide with 3 tbsp of bicarb soda and a half tbsp of washing up liquid. Place the mixture into the spray bottle and, if you like, add a few drops of lavender oil.
The reason I included the lander oil is that it will neutralize the smell of the mixture, and help whoever uses the mattress, sleep better.
Shake the mixture gently so that the ingredients can combine adequately, but not excessively; otherwise, the solution will create bubbles.
Step #1: Soak your mattress with vinegar
The vinegar will help you get started. It doesn’t matter if the stain has just happened or it is already dry.
But if the urine stain is still wet, soak up the moisture with dry cotton or paper towels, otherwise, douse the entire area and even beyond, with white vinegar.
Step #2: Apply your solution
Spray your solution over the urine-stained area until it soaks, then leaves it for at least five minutes. But if the stain is set in, you can allow the mattress to soak in the solution for about 20 minutes.
Step #3: Reapply the solution if needed
If the stain persists, reapply the solution until it comes off. However, avoid rubbing or wiping with towels since this will only make the stain spread to other areas of the mattress.
How to remove blood stains from mattress
Despite how messy it may look, cleaning blood stain from your mattress is very simple. In fact, you don’t need any chemical or complicated solutions – all you need is cold water.
Blood usually dissolves in cold water; therefore, soak the area with the stain and dab it with a cloth also soaked in cold water.
Note: It is essential to keep in mind that using hot water on the bloodstain will only set it in.
Alternatively, you can also use bicarb soda for this exercise. Absorb the mixture of bicarb soda in a cloth and apply it onto the stain and then leave for 30 minutes. Use a towel to dab the stain dry.
Another home-based method is using a meat tenderizer. This product works so great due to its ability to break down proteins to marinade, and since blood also has protein, which is what causes the stain, meat tenderizer can help get rid of the bloodstains on your mattress.
Just smear the paste onto the area with the stain and let it cover for at least an hour. Dab the stain with a dry towel to remove the moisture.
How to remove a coffee stain from the mattress
Breakfast in bed is quite a treat until you spill your coffee on your mattress. No matter how quickly you strip off the beddings, you are likely to have a coffee stain on your mattress.
Luckily, you can remove the stain easily using any stain remover spray, which comes ready-to-use.
However, you will need:
Fan
Water
Clean cloth
Paper towel
  Follow these steps:
Use absorbent paper towels to soak up the coffee moisture
Spray the area using spray remover
Leave it for 15 minutes
Use a wet sponge to scrub the stained area
If the stain persists, apply the stain remover again
Use the fan to dry the blemished area
How to clean a mattress with bicarb soda
If you want to remove general filth from your mattress, you can use ordinary baking powder. This kitchen product is known for being able to clean just about everything in the house, including cleaning your mattress.
What you need:
500gram bicarbonate of soda
Vacuum cleaner
Essential oil
  Steps to follow:
First, rotate or flip the mattress, since this is recommended in order to extend the lifespan of the bed as well as preventing sagging.
Add up to 20 drops of essential oil of your choice into the box containing bicarbonate of soda and close it then shake it vigorously. Essential oils are nature’s antibacterial, be it ylang-ylang, chamomile, lavender, or sandalwood.
Sprinkle the mixture over your mattress then use a lot of bicarbonate of soda (most people recommend the entire box), and rub it into the bed for deep cleaning. Let the combination work for at least an hour.
The final step is to vacuum the mattress to remove all the bicarb soda.
Remove stains from mattress with vinegar
You can also clean stains from your mattress using white vinegar. All you have to do is fill an empty spray bottle with white vinegar.
Spray a light coat of pure vinegar all over the bed and allow it to dry
For urine, coffee, and bloodstains, spray a heavy coat of pure vinegar until the area with the stain is saturated.
Sprinkle bicarb soda over the mattress and allow it to settle overnight
Vacuum your mattress to get rid of the bicarb soda.

Australian Made Mattresses
We get it. You want a mattress that is Australian made, and there’s plenty of benefits what come with it like the greater transparency on the construction and materials, higher quality materials, Australian chemical checks. Also, it helps provide more jobs to Australians.
There are various Australian made mattresses on the market but sometimes it can be deceiving to find them with companies saying designed in Australia, appearing to be Australian made but looking at the small print it says made in China.
Choosing a mattress can sometimes be a challenging experience, especially when you’re trying to filter the noise. So, we made this guide to cut through the marketing jargon and quickly find a bed in a box that’s Australian made.
How we made our choices
We went through the Australian bed market and found all the mattress in a box brands. Then we looked through all the marketing material and history and made a list of the Australian made mattress, we then placed them into separate categories to which they excel at to make you choice easier.
When we review the mattress brands we always look at real customer reviews, independent reviews, manufacture details, and drill down into the facts, price, trial period, features, materials, sleep quality, and much more.
Right, let’s jump into the top picks.
Koala mattress (Most Popular)
You can’t get more Australian then the Koala mattress, the bed was originally created by two Bryon bay locals Mitch and Danny and they still make the bed in Aus.
Koala is also a partner of WWF, helping the ongoing habitat loss for koalas and preventing the extinction of the green turtles. So every time you buy a Koala mattress you are also helping the Australian wildlife.
Moving on to the bed itself, the Koala is a dual foam layer bed with a specially designed ‘Kloudcell’ foam top, which is made to be very breathable and embracing. Then the bottom layer that’s firmer to add support and durability to the bed. Overall, this gives the bed a medium firmness bed that many Australians love.

How To Recycle Your Old Mattress In Australia
When buying a new mattress or mattress in a box, it may cross your mind what are you going to do with your old bed? Because mattresses can last more than 10 years. But just like any other goods, the time will come when you need to dispose of your mattress.
In the state of Victoria, every year more than 300,000 mattresses are disposed to landfills, that’s a massive 5,700 mattresses every week. And because beds are usually made mostly of recyclable materials, it’s an enormous waste and environmental abuse.
Why you need to recycle your mattress
There are many reasons why you should recycle your mattress, but the most important one is to preserve the environment. With many serious environmental issues affecting the planet, it is high time we take steps to ensure that we don’t overwhelm Mother Nature with unnecessary waste.
Mattresses also contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, flame retardants, and phthalates, which can filter from the beds and pollute water and soil.
Recycling has been one of the most effective methods of curtailing landfill wastes. One of the things that take up a lot of space in landfills is mattresses. Generally, an average mattress can take up to 40 cubic feet of space, so you can imagine how much space 300,000 mattresses take up, and that is without including couches, foldout sofa beds, and recliners.
Luckily, around 80% of most mattress materials can be reused, meaning you can now recycle your old mattress.
How to recycle your old mattress
1. Find Recycling Program
In Australia, many local councils provide mattress recycling services. So if you have an old mattress or want to dispose of your mattress simply give them a call and ask if they can pick the mattress for recycling.
Soft Landing is a social program that also provides mattress recycling services, particularly in Australia Capital Territory, New South Wales, Western Australia, and Victoria.
SUEZ is also another social enterprise that offers the same services but focuses on Sydney and New South Wales areas.
2. Check the warranty of your mattress
Most mattress brands offer a buyback or complimentary collection and dispose of the program, which enables mattress manufacturers to collect a disposal fee in addition to the cost of brand new mattresses as well as box springs.
This money is then used for recycling of the old mattresses and construction of more mattress recycling centres.
So when you buy a new mattress, as your retailer if they collect and dispose of your old one.
3. Recycle your old mattress yourself
If your local council or mattress retailer does not offer recycling services, you can do it yourself. First, assess the condition of the mattress and see if it still has life in it.
Most mattresses can live more than 10 years, so if yours is under ten and still in good condition, you can consider reselling it in a thrift store or online listing sites like eBay, Facebook, or Gumtree.
However, to increase your chance of a sale, you will have to ensure your mattress is still in good buyable condition.
4. Donate it
If you are bothered by making money from an old mattress, you can donate it to goodwill, homeless shelter, Habitat for Humanity, or a local charity.
Habitat for Humanity can recycle old mattresses, and the proceeds go to individuals who need them most, such as vulnerable families and homeless people. Since the organisation builds new homes daily, they can take mattresses that are still in good condition.
Remember to clean and disinfect your mattress before donating it to a charity. Some organisations reserve the right to turn down a donation of mattresses that are in bad condition.
Sydney based Generous and The Grateful offer old mattress collection as long as it is in good condition, and then they donate it to families in need.
The Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group, a Victorian State Government Statutory Body coordinates and facilitates the delivery of waste management and resources recovery in Melbourne metropolitan. The body usually refurbishes old mattresses, manually dismantle and mechanically separate the parts, or mix shred to obtain steel.
5. Dismantle it yourself
You will be surprised to learn what your old mattress can make after dismantling it. The components from your old bed can give you a variety of home DIY projects.
Traditional spring mattresses contain typically around 11 kg of steel, mostly in springs. When melted, these springs can be used to make a wide range of products. Nevertheless, if you don’t have a melting furnace, there are ingenious ways you can repurpose mattress springs, including:
Spring vase: Add a rustic look to your home by turning your mattress spring into a vintage spring vase. You will also need a test tube to hold the plant, and if you like, paint the spring with the colour of your choice.
Spring wreath: You can also make a wreath out of the mattress springs to decorate your front door or living room with. The good thing about this wreath is that it is highly customisable.
Plant holder: Put those mattress springs into good use by turning them into plant holders. However, due to the size of the spring, you shouldn’t put huge planters in them. Just push the pot down the spring so that it balances and you are done!
Candle holder: With a combination of a small jelly jar, you can create some amazing candle holders with bed springs. These candleholders can be perfect for outdoor events during summer or even weddings! Just put a jelly jar inside the mattress spring and you are good to go. It is also easy to make these, as all you need is five minutes.
Photo display: Have some old family photos in the basement? How about creating a photo holder for them using old mattress springs? You will probably need several springs for this project, but in the end, definitely worth it. Just attach the springs to a board and place your pictures in between the springs and you are done. This is a great way to display your old black and white family photos.
Garden trellis: Instead of dismantling your entire mattress, you can use it to make a garden trellis. This is a very easy project, just stand the entire mattress spring in your garden and allow the vine plants to climb on it. The best part is that you can still remove springs you feel you can use for another DIY project.
Bird’s nests: Add some neat and charming décor to your backyard by creating bird’s nests out of old mattress springs. The rustic vintage look will go with any outdoor or indoor decoration.
Recipe holder: Almost every kitchen has one or two cookbooks, so why not hold them using your mattress spring? If you love cooking or baking, you will find this to be a great gift idea for a friend. Sand the springs if they have rust, and attach a holder at the end to hold the recipes securely.
Wine charms: Do you love wine? (Like there is anyone who doesn’t!). Your old mattress springs can also be used to make a wine charm holder. Just push the spring down over the wine bottler and attach your charm on the end.
Spring pin cushion: This is a pretty simple idea and will take about five minutes to make it. But you will need to do a little sewing with this idea as well as use a little paint.
Edgy food holder: You can do this in numerous ways, start with an old box spring or remove however many springs you want, then just insert your wrapped chips. Make sure you sand down the springs like mentioned in the recipe holder.
If you don’t feel like decorating your home with old mattress springs, you can collect them and sell them to a scrapyard and metal recyclers.
Mattresses also contain a combination of natural fibres such as wool, silk, and cotton, and non-natural fibres such as rayon and polyester. These materials can be recycled and be used to make different products from insulation to padding.
Polyurethane foam found in mattresses can also be shredded and reused around the house mainly for padding, for example in car seat cushions, and pillows. Latex foam and memory foam can also be repurposed the same way.
During the dismantling of your mattress, you will also find some woods in there. Besides its obvious use (firewood), you can also shred the wood and used it in your garden as mulch.
Other components such as screws, nails, and other metal parts can be reused in several projects in your house, while the braiding and buttons can be used for your sewing projects and different designs in your home.
How to tell if it’s time to get a new mattress?
There is an easy way to know if you need a new mattress. Just think about the number of years you have owned it,, and you will get a hint. The average mattress lasts up to 10 years, though some can last for only 7 years. So if it has been more than 10 years since you bought your current mattress, it is probably time to buy a new one.
Other than the number of years you have owned the mattress, some signs can help you know if it is time to upgrade your bed, including:
Sagging: The most obvious sign that you need a new mattress is if your current one has or starts to sag. Sagging is usually a sign that the coils in your mattress have weakened or the memory foam has worn out.
Noise: If your mattress begins to produce squeaking sound or screeching metal sounds, it is a sign that you should replace it. This usually is common in beds with coils, and sometimes it may not need replacing; just tighten the bolts in the box spring or mattress.
Smell: The mattress may start to smell after using it for sometimes as a buildup of mold, mildew, or fungi. This can occur sooner if you live in humid areas.
Pain: Another sign that you need to replace your current mattress is if you wake up with severe pains in your back, shoulder, hips, neck, or any part of your body. This is usually a sign that your mattress is no longer able to offer the support required for your weight.
 Final Thoughts
There you go, now you know how to recycle your old mattress as well as the reasons why you shouldn’t send it to the landfill. When you buy a new mattress, make sure you check out our mattress reviews first. Most brands have a buyback program or free collect and dispose of the program, which means the manufacture will take your old mattress when you buy a new one, and recycle it. This is perhaps the best way to recycle your old mattress, but you can also donate it to charity or dismantle it for a home DIY project
