Anyone who has moved to Berlin in recent decades has played a part in the development of this city. For some, it conveyed an atmosphere of departure (or even "dependency") in an alternative and avant-garde sense; for others, it was merely a projection surface for profane economic interests pushed by global market events. There was never a vision for all. Politicians were merely trying to pick the pearls out of many alternative ideas. For example, the nightlife and the precarious life of artists were included in the marketing of Berlin. This blind vision is now reflected in a place of action. An unrenovated former industrially used hall and other rooms formerly used as offices, which were made available to the artists' community "Treptow-Ateliers" together with their cheaply rented temporary studios as a temporary playground by an investor. The community itself opened the space for third-party projects. The rawness of the historic site, the desire and spontaneity of the alternative users inevitably lead back to the aura of Berlin in the 1980s and 1990s. And of course Berlin still works like that. But the atmosphere is deceptive, the awakening already sits in the neck, like a drug that slowly loses its effect. Because it all ends, and without romanticism. The artists soon have to go back to their nomadic way. Only that they are not nomadic, but originally displaced from their cherished place of work. Their journey is already unique, because they stick together in solidarity in their seemingly hopeless situation. What could become, what could be? Why is it a blind vision?

Der Mythos ist hin

„der mythos ist hin“ ist ein Zitat aus einem Film über den Prenzlauer Berg in der Umbruchszeit 1990. Der Film flaniert mit seinen Protagonist:innen, ohne zu kommentieren. Und so wollen auch wir in diesem Jahr mit den unterschiedlichen Akteur:innen„Begegnungen zwischen dem 1. Mai und dem 1. Juli“ geschehen lassen, die den Begriff des Mythos befragen, feiern, geschehen lassen oder beschädigen. Welchen Mythos eigentlich? Den des Prenzlauer Berges? Von Pankow? Der Stadt Berlin? Der Künstlerin / dem Künstler als Person oder Vorkommnis? Wo ist euer Arkadien? Die politischen Ereignisse der letzten Wochen haben weitere Fragen nach Mythen und gebrochenen Mythen aufgeworfen, die wir hier ebenfalls kommentieren können.

Die Ausstellung in der Galerie Pankow ist die diesjährige Festivalausstellung und entsteht in Kooperation mit der Galerie Pankow. Es werden ca. 80 Positionen auf und aus Papier versammelt, die dem Thema auf der Spur sind.

artspring berlin wurde 2017 gegründet vor dem Hintergrund der drohenden Verdrängung der Bildenden Künstler:innen aus dem Stadtbezirk, da Arbeits- und Ausstellungsmöglichkeiten zunehmend der Immobilienspekulation zum Opfer fielen und auch nach wie vor fallen. Somit spielt das Thema des Mythos immer mit: Hat der Mythos des Prenzlauer Berges / von Pankow sich selbst beschädigt? Können sich Künstler:innen auf ihrem Mythos ausruhen? Sind Mythen Gerüchte, sind es Überlieferungen, sind es Interpretationen? Ist mein Mythos auch dein Mythos?

Positionen aus dem Stadtbezirk

Das Verwalterhaus auf dem St. Nicolai- und St. Marienfriedhof ist ein Kleinod, wie es das eigentlich nicht mehr gibt in Berlin und in Pankow. Das Haus mit der eindrücklichen Adresse Prenzlauer Allee 1 ist ebenso zentral gelegen wie morbide verwunschen. Für drei Wochen füllen wir es mit ortsbezogenen Installationen von Kunstschaffenden des  Stadtbezirks Pankow.

Das kleine Haus auf dem Friedhof ist ein Ort wie ein Zwischenreich – zwischen dem Leben, das hier stattgefunden hat, dem, welches hinter dem Zaun tobt und der Vergänglichkeit, die sich wie ein Garten um das Gebäude schmiegt. Die Ausstellung legt einen Lebensfaden durch das Gebäude, der zu einem gemalten Portal führt. 13 Positionen zeigen Stationen, Fragen und auch Ungeheuerlichkeiten des Lebens.

The caretaker's house on the St. Nicolai and St. Marien cemetery is a gem the likes of which no longer exist in Berlin and Pankow. The house with the impressive address Prenzlauer Allee 1 is as centrally located as it is morbidly enchanted. For three weeks, we will fill it with site-specific installations by artists from the district of Pankow.

The small house in the cemetery is a place like an in-between realm - between the life that has taken place here, that which rages behind the fence and the transience that nestles around the building like a garden. The exhibition lays a thread of life through the building that leads to a painted portal. 13 positions show stations, questions and also monstrosities of life.

The show’s ethos is best encapsulated in Vincent VanGogh’s words: “I often think that the night is more alive and more richly coloured thanthe day.” The works included in this exhibition are conceived with the dark hours in mind,sometimes even created during that time. Be it through nightly creatures, theexploration of dreams and the unconscious, or the economic power hidden withinthese hours, these 13 artists will come together in conversation with each other, bothaesthetically and thematically. The exhibition is supported by Ecosia, a Berlin-based search engine that plants treeswith their profits.
