sometimes you say or do bad things while you’re in an awful mental place. sometimes you say things that are rude or uncalled for or manipulative. and i’m not going to hold that against you. mental illness is hard, and no one is perfect. but once you’re through that episode, you need to take steps to make amends. you need to apologize.

“i couldn’t help it, i was having a bad episode” is a justification, not an apology.

“i’m so fucking sorry, i fucked up, i don’t deserve to live, i should stop talking to anyone ever, i should die” is a second breakdown and a guilt trip. it is not an apology.

when you apologize, the focus should be on the person you hurt. “i’m sorry. i did something that was hurtful to you. even if i was having a rough time, you didn’t deserve to hear that,” is a better apology. if it was a small thing, you can leave it at that.

if you caused significant distress to the other person, this is a good time to talk about how you can minimize damage in the future. and again, even if it is tempting to say you should self-isolate and/or die, that is not a helpful suggestion. it will result in the person you’re talking to trying to talk you out of doing that, which makes your guilt the focus of the conversation instead of their hurt.

you deserve friendship, and you deserve support. but a supportive friend is not an emotional punching bag, and mental illness does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions. what you say during a mental breakdown doesn’t define you. how you deal with the aftermath though, says a lot.

it starts with skrael—well. tinkering. he's almost through an entire cryoengineering program, how hard can a homebrew fog machine be?

after nari kicks them out of her garage—"i am NOT losing my deposit over a little FREON CONTAM, ASSHOLES (LOVING)"—bellroc changes tack. he knows bells's heard him, humming tone-deaf little bars over breakfast; he does it unthinking, but he knows they know he can't carry a tune in a bucket. vocals are, thankfully, out of the question.

so when they ask if he'd like to write for them, instead—he doesn't really know what to say.

he's not offended. it's not—that isn't it. it's not because they write their lyrics in some fuckoff ancient language (they've explained) no one living is even really that sure of how to pronounce. it's that gorgoneion was their thing. just them. a piece of them he'd first glimpsed without their knowledge, an overstep he still somehow faintly regrets, even despite their forgiveness. and now for them to offer it to him, like this? freely, knowingly, after all the stupid bullshit of the past year-odd knowing each other?

the last time he felt so much like an idiot teenager in love, he was one. and that? is really the scariest part about this.

anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful
