Summer Hill Seven
Actor - Attorney - Author
My philosophy of acting and thus life has transcended anything that resembles philosophy. It is now about what I do and not merely what I think. I experience happiness with a smile. I experience thought with a word. I experience life with action.
As a child, Summer Hill Seven studied and taught from the Bible and Quran. He became a 5%er and later a youth Imam with the American Muslim Mission. At Richard Stockton College he served as the first African-American student body president and first two-term president. At Princeton University and the New York University School of Law he emerged as a national student leader in the same year that President Obama became the editor of the Harvard Law Review. After leading a protest & take over of the dean’s office at the NYU School of Law and establishing the Nelson Mandela Scholarship for the National Black Law Students Association, Seven transcended the paradigms provided by the American political system in pursuit of a more powerful vehicle to provoke social change. He found acting. He found theater. Poemedy found him.

On Acting By Summer Hill Seven We have mostly agreed that film acting is very different from stage acting. We spend most of our time telling students of acting how they must learn different skills, methods and exercises not only for different arenas also for different genres of writings. We do not do it in vain. We do it with good intentions. Like a parent seeking to protect a child, we caution our students about 'hot stoves' or looking 'both ways' before they cross the street. The result, often is another voice with a long list of 'don'ts' repeatedly running in the actor's mind during the playing. Some of us, first as actors, later as teachers, out of a need to survive, have focused on what is common to every type of acting in every time and place. Some have focused on breathing (Linklater), or alignment (Alexander), or emotional recall (Method), etc., as the common trait in all great acting. I call my method Poemedy. It too is inspired by a desire to actively pursue what is common to all acting. Poemedy is, at once, old and new. It does not replace, rather it seeks to advance the conversation. Poemedy does not seek to reiterate existing approaches, rather reinvigorate the conversation about approaching the sacred art of conjuring eternal human conditions. The approach can be simply stated as the relentless pursuit of that which is, at once, poetic and laugh inducing, in the script. This approach is as applicable and effective in Shakespeare on stage as it is in a web series script. In fact, we assert that film stardom is at the crossroad of poetic speaking and comedic timing. We welcome an opportunity to continue this conversation in person. After all, a new approach to discussing acting is only useful when applied to actual acting work. #acting www.poemedy.com
Professional actors work with private coaches that give them a competitive advantage because they understand the actor’s instrument and aspirations. Do you have a coach? If not, what are you waiting for?
Mary Oliver reads a poem from Dog Songs from Penguin Press on Vimeo.
Renowned poet Mary Oliver reads "Little Dog's Rhapsody in the Night" from her collection of new and favorite poems, Dog Songs, celebrating the dogs that have enriched her world.
Beloved by her readers, special to the poet's own heart, Mary Oliver's dog poems offer a special window into her world. Dog Songs collects some of the most cherished poems together with new works, offering a portrait of Oliver's relationship to the companions that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. Illustrated with images of the dogs themselves, the subjects come to colorful life here.
These are poems of love and laughter, heartbreak and grief. In these pages we visit with old friends, including Oliver's well-loved Percy, and others. Throughout, the many dogs of Oliver's life emerge as fellow travelers, but also as guides, spirits capable of opening our eyes to the lessons of the moment and the joys of nature and connection.
Dog Songs is a testament to the power and depth of the human-animal exchange, from an observer of extraordinary vision.
Poemedy@MiamiDadeCollege - Summer Hill Seven, Faculty/Guest Artist (c) 2009 from Summer Hill Seven on Vimeo.
In 2009, while we were serving as an adjunct faculty member and Guest Artist at Miami Dade College, we presented an array of artistic projects including a dance we choreographed with several students whom we have lost contact with and do not have their names to credit and yet our appreciation for their work continues to grow. We utilized music from Bryonn Bain, Harvard Professor of Hip-Hop and performing artist, as well as Dr. John Sims, Professor of Mathematics and leading proponent of The Math Art Project, which led to the first presentation of SQUIRCULAR (a poemedy with 360 lines and each line having 7 syllables) at the Bowery Poetry Cafe in New York City.
