i haven't seen anyone talk about this so here is my stone cold abbott elementary hot take: GREGORY KNOWS. i know, i know, this is the slow burn of all time. I KNOW they both decided to "move on" after the kiss. but have you seen his face when he looks at janine?? that is a man in love, yes, but after "Teacher's Conference", this is now the face of a man who KNOWS he is in love.
every time Tyler James Williams looks at Quinta Brunson LIKE THAT, my fucking heart stops. give this man a fucking emmy already. the writers have been giving us a slow burn that (imo) hinges on both gregory and janine moving from friends to idiots to lovers, but gregory is already there. I am convinced.
okay okay hear me out bc in this essay I will contend that gregory is calling his father and going ring shopping on the weekend between E16 and E17.
I didn't think gregory knew he was in love with janine until this last episode (2.16 "Teacher Conference") but I stg, they set it up so that he realizes it BEFORE the kiss heard round the fandom.

first, the fucking notebook. TJW is really killing it this season, good lord. look at gregory's face when he's talking to amber and she tells him to put the notebook away:

it just fully takes the wind out of his sails. where before, he was so excited to share his plans for their weekend, you can see how all the enthusiasm has gone out of him and he's shutting down.
now LOOK at him when janine hands him her little notebook:

the realization of what she's just given him dawning on him. the TINIEST LITTLE SMILE when he puts it together, understands what this means. this is the face of a man putting the lego flower puzzle pieces together, finally. he is LOOKING AT HIS PERSON. the shoe is about to drop.
before they even kiss in the living classroom, and we've seen the drinking and the photobooth and the banter, the writers build on the notebook thing and give us A Moment. janine is enchanted by the classroom, just being her absolutely adorable self (in addition to being a writing genius, Quinta Brunson is so effortlessly charming in this role).
the camera pushes in on gregory watching her:

the LOOK in his EYES as he realizes it's JANINE. it's ALWAYS BEEN JANINE. yeah, he is "seeing it" and "it" is HOW MUCH HE LOVES HER.
then, as he's processing how gardening and educating go together for him, gregory looks at janine standing there Like That (Ms. Brunson in that blue sweater dress I am terminally gay) and smiling at him Like That—

he's LITERALLY considering his past, present, future and you see it on his face as he shifts through 16 different emotions. he is LOOKING AT JANINE going "oh, right, who I thought I was going to be and what I thought I wanted when I was young has shifted and part of the reason is the person standing right in front of me."
the writers were giving it to us RIGHT THERE. gregory fucking KNOWS that is his WIFE and I will absolutely die on this hill. my theory is that for the end of S2/majority of S3, Janine will be the hold out. she's still dating Maurice. she told the camera crew it was a "whoopsie" and gregory corroborated once he heard what she was going with, not before:

gregory is a patient man. he is devoted. he showed up at abbott even after losing out on the principal job to ava, and decided to stay just in case things turned around. his interactions with janine have been building to this for a year and a half. his feelings for her, at first a little crush, have fully crystallized into respect, admiration and adoration—in the context of his realization this episode that his relationships with other women haven't worked out for a reason. janine is the reason and THE ONE. she just needs to catch up to him, and he is more than willing to wait.
*hitting you with a stick* no benoit blanc movies should not interact. they should not lead up to something. you need to detox from the marvel/sherlock bbc poisoning. they should be completely independent movies (maybe w some cameos/little references for fun) and go on for as long as there are stories rian johnson wants to tell in this universe. i do not want an overarching plot i do not want a team up i dont want a benoit-focused prequel i want some good old fashioned episodic murder mysteries that have nothing to do with each other!!!!!!!!!!! also rian johnson has literally said he's not gonna do a prequel and he wants the movies to all stand on their own
After watching him play Benoit Blanc I think we all know that folks need to give Daniel Craig more roles he can have fun with, and by that I mean I need him to be the only human in a Muppets movie
Knives out and Glass Onion work bc it brings the role of mystery solving detective out of brooding tortured genius and back to its rightful place as Friendly Weirdo In a Little Outfit
