EDIT: Just so there's no confusion, the first option is meant to be in reference to individuals bonding over *shared* trauma. Wish I could update the phrasing to something like "bonding over trauma" now since there is apparently a medical term of the same name that refers to abusive relationships, but polls are locked once posted...

I had a very interesting discussion about theater and film the other day. My parents and I were talking about Little Shop of Horrors and, specifically, about the ending of the musical versus the ending of the (1986) movie. In the musical, the story ends with the main characters getting eaten by the plant and everybody dying. The movie was originally going to end the same way, but audience reactions were so negative that they were forced to shoot a happy ending where the plant is destroyed and the main characters survive. Frank Oz, who directed the movie, later said something I think is very interesting:
I learned a lesson: in a stage play, you kill the leads and they come out for a bow — in a movie, they don’t come out for a bow, they’re dead. They’re gone and so the audience lost the people they loved, as opposed to the theater audience where they knew the two people who played Audrey and Seymour were still alive. They loved those people, and they hated us for it.
That’s a real gem of a thought in and of itself, a really interesting consequence of the fact that theater is alive in a way that film isn’t. A stage play always ends with a tangible reminder that it’s all just fiction, just a performance, and this serves to gently return the audience to the real world. Movies don’t have that, which really changes the way you’re affected by the story’s conclusion. Neat!
But here’s what’s really cool: I asked my dad (who is a dramaturge) what he had to say about it, and he pointed out that there is actually an equivalent technique in film: the blooper reel. When a movie plays bloopers while the credits are rolling, it’s accomplishing the exact same thing: it reminds you that the characters are actually just played by actors, who are alive and well and probably having a lot of fun, even if the fictional characters suffered. How cool is that!?
Now I’m really fascinated by the possibility of using bloopers to lessen the impact of a tragic ending in a tragicomedy…

I see your "Laios is trans" but that dude is THE most apathetically agender person on the planet. Laios does not have time for gender. Laios does not even HAVE a gender identity, he removed it to make room for more Monster Facts.

If you (like me) want 3rd party candidates to be an actual viable option in USA elections so you no longer have to vote for Democrats OR Republicans as your first and only choice, then what we need is Ranked Choice Voting. In order for that to happen, we as voters have to do two things:
Vote Democrat this fall, because Republicans fucking hate Ranked Choice Voting, and in several Republican-run states they have outlawed it. So if you want it, you have to keep Democrats in power in your state.
Lobby for and then vote for Ranked-choice voting in your state! Many American states have already adopted Ranked Choice voting and several more are set to do so in 2024. The ball is literally already rolling on this, we just need YOU to help it along.

#not to be a hater but this is genuinely useful advice and the number of people in the comments who are like#‘I just say i hate talking about myself’#or worse#‘I just say [disturbing and scary thing] and shut that right down’#it’s not a bad thing to be uncomfortable talking about yourself or to not know what to say when asked these questions#it’s not even a bad thing to feel like the questions are trite and annoying and shallow#but most of the time a question like that is coming from a well-meaning place#and punishing people for showing interest in you is NOT the way to stay civil and friendly#especially bc most of the time these things are asked in school or work settings. it’s actually a good thing to be friendly to those people#(and just in general it’s a good thing to be friendly to people around you even if you’ll never see them again)#like if you’re a huge introvert who feels like u don’t know the rules of social interaction or what to say to other people??#this is the advice. literally right here. you don’t even have to be creative about it#there is something in your life that is notable enough to carry you through the discomfort#‘I like plants’ ‘i paint with watercolors’ ‘I like to binge watch tv shows’#‘I subscribe to a mail loot crate box but it’s for my dog instead of for me’#even if you never leave the house! ‘im a homebody’ is right there and easy to say#and if you really DO want the conversation to end there without follow up. a lot of those are sufficiently boring that people won’t ask more#the list is to prepare you for the uncomfortable situation so you can get through the uncomfortable situation without looking like a jerk

This is part of my ongoing Discworld jacket embroidery project. Of course Great A'Tuin has to be on there. And of course it has to be the biggest one of them all.
I'm going to put the finished product in my masterpost, but I'm so proud of the thing that I have to put it in an extra post beforehand. Enjoy!

in one of my agriculture classes we had a guy come in who was like "now we all know that roundup causes cancer, but if I sell someone roundup, I can sell them 6,000 gallons of roundup whereas another guy who is just in it for the money can sell them 9,000 gallons, so there is a lot of opportunity to make a difference"
paraphrasing, but "now we all know that roundup causes cancer" is pretty much verbatim
